This one office in York County is continuing to try to reach hundreds of families who have never claimed what is now a treasure trove of cash and Jewelry. The York County Coroner’s Office now has unclaimed property dating all the way back to the 1980s.

Many people have still never been contacted due to name changes and moves over the years. When original owners are found it can truly be rewarding for everybody.

Concord Man Was Just Arrested For Failing To Return A VHS Tape He Rented 14 Years Ago

You may want to check your old junk boxes to see if you have any old Blockbuster tapes laying around. James Meyers Jr., a single dad from Concord was just arrested for failing to return a movie that he rented in 2002.

James was driving his 10-year-old daughter to school on Tuesday morning when police pulled him over for a broken brake light.

failure to return vhsHe politely gave the police his driver’s license – when they returned, they said there was a warrant out for his arrest for not returning a VHS rental, “Freddy Got Fingered,” from 2002.

Police then let him drive his daughter to school if he promised to return to the police station to be arrested. He did return, was processed at the Concord Police Department on a charge of “failure to return hired property”, then transferred to Cabarrus County Jail, where he was released on a written promise.

James Meyers is now scheduled to appear in court next month.

Starting Today, NC Police Will Be Ticketing Anyone Going More Than 1 MPH Over Speed Limit

The NCDOT has just launched their annual “Obey The Sign or Pay The Fine Campaign”. From March 24th through April 3rd, police will be pulling over and ticketing anyone driving above the posted speed limit – even if it’s only 1 mph over the limit.

Many people believe that if the speed limit is 65, you won’t get pulled over for doing 1 to 9 MPH over the limit – a so called “buffer zone”. Police are hoping that this campaign will help to change that mindset.

North Carolina is the following Maryland’s lead in trying to debunk the “buffer zone” myth.

If the campaign is successful, it’s likely other states could announce similar safety campaigns.

Meth Lab Discovered in Concord Mills Store

concord-mills-drug bustThe North Carolina Bureau of Investigation finished a multi-year operation which uncovered 12 meth labs around the Concord region, including one in a Concord Mills Store.

The investigation started on Oct. 2, 2013 as a join effort between the NCBI and local sheriff offices. They discovered a local group that was distributing large amounts of meth throughout our region and began several undercover operations to find out where the meth was being made, or imported from.

Based upon the witness testimonies, agent accounts, and seizures, investigators now estimate that they distributed meth with a street value of over $4 million.

At the end of the collaborative, multi-year investigation, state and local agents ended up finding meth lab operations (with large stockpiles of Pseudoephedrine and Acetone) in the RCC Western Store in Concord Mills, 3 vehicles, and inside homes at; 320 Goodman Drive in Salisbury, 340 Goodman Drive in Salisbury, 165 Scaleybrook Drive in Salisbury, 1070 Matika Drive in Salisbury, 1535 Ribelin Road in Salisbury, 1018 Church Street in Faith, 155 Beth Drive in China Grove, 4385 Highway 200 in Stanfield.

26 people have now been arrested for being involved with the production or distribution of meth. 22 defendants were located in North Carolina, and 4 were located in Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina and Indiana. The out-of-state arrests were made with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, Homeland Security Investigations and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Lake Norman Teen Qualified For The U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships

lake norman synchronized swimmingNot only is the Lake Norman region home to some of the best curling in America – it’s also dominating the synchronized swimming world. In 2010, the Huntersville Family Fitness and Aquatics Center hosted the U.S. Nationals for synchronized swimming, and now, one of the event’s spectators has now climbed to the national stage.

Olivia Schafer (14), will now be competing in the 2016 U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Championships in Mesa, Arizona from April 5th to the 9th of this year. The Pine Lake Prep student qualified for three events – 13-15 solo, 13-15 duet and 13-15 team – a truly impressive feat considering how hard it is to qualify for even 1.

She grew up in a synchronized swimming family, with her mom competing at the collegiate level at Ohio State, and has had incredible support ever since she learned how to swim. She now plans on following in her mom’s footsteps at Ohio State, and hopes to one day make it to the Olympics.

google-fiber-coming-to-charlotteLast year, Google announced that they were about to start construction on their High-Speed Fiber network in the Queen City.

Their plan now includes 28 station to be built around the Queen City, with thousands of miles of cable running above and beneath the streets to connect each home with internet speeds 100 times faster than we have now, and for lower monthly payments.

Fiber cables will branch out from 12-foot by 27-foot fiber buildings that would serve about 20,000 homes each. Google will be connecting to houses that asked for it, but only in neighborhoods with high enough demand.

The fastest current broadband speeds offered in Charlotte have been about 10 to 20 megabits per second for years, until recently when TWC launched their 300 megabit service to compete with Google. Once Google Fiber is connected, it will deliver 1,000 megabits – or 1 gigabit – per second. This would allow for no-waiting downloads and uploads of movies or other big data files. Downloading 100 photos will take 3 seconds.

GoogleFiber MapThe Erichson Group did an analysis of the city and created this map that shows where the coverage areas will most likely initially be.

In order to determine who gets this awesome new coverage, Google first works with the city to figure out where the cables can be laid, how to minimize disruption levels, and where the highest demand exists for the service (how many given homes in each neighborhood will sign up).

Google has not given an exact date as to when customers will begin to receive the crazy fast internet, but they do have a page on their website dedicated to Fiber in Charlotte where people can sign up for e-mail updates.

This past weekend, at Comedian Steve Harvey’s Ford Neighborhood Awards in Atlanta, the shop won the award for best barbershop. The award ceremony is hosted by world famous comedian Steve Harvey and is designed to highlight some of the best organizations in service, business, philanthropy, and social and justice causes.

Platinum Cuts has been a Rock Hill institution for decades, it has a strong history of civic involvement and community service.

Over the past last three years, Platinum Cuts was one of the finalists for the best barbershop award, competing against shops in major cities across America. This year, our hometown shop finally came out on top after nationwide voting.

To say thank you for the incredible award, Platinum Cuts will be giving out free haircuts on August 17th.

North Carolina State Legislature Just Passed A Law Overturning Charlotte’s New Bathroom Bill

hb2 north carolinaRALEIGH, NC — The North Carolina General Assembly just held a historic special session to discuss, debate, and vote on whether or not Charlotte’s new bathroom bill and sexual expression clauses were in violation of the state’s constitution.

At about 6pm on Wednesday evening, HB2, or the “Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act,” passed both chambers by a majority vote of 83-24 and is now on its way to be signed by Governor Pat McCrory.

UPDATE: At 10:00pm EST, governor McCrory signed bill HB2 into law and released this statement explaining why he decided to sign it, then sent out this tweet;

The Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act specifically clarifies that all public bathrooms, locker rooms, and showers in the state are limited to only 1 sex at a time, and authorizes the Human Rights Commission to oversee the new protections. The new law also allows for transgender people who have transitioned to the opposite sex to freely use the bathroom of their new sex.

It also clarifies that the State is responsible for regulating employment relationships in order to simplify local laws and ordinances which are deemed harmful to commerce, labor, and trade in the state of North Carolina. It specifies that local governments can’t force local businesses to pay workers above the current state minimum wage, with some exceptions.

new south carolina refugee billAfter the horrendous terrorist attack in Brussels, SC lawmakers want to expedite the vote of a new bill that would require background checks of all refugees to be shared with law enforcement agencies.

The bill would also hold refugees’ host organizations liable for any crimes committed by settlers from “terrorist nations”.

Last month, the it was given priority status with a 32-4 vote (all four ‘nos’ were Democrats). Opponents the passing of the bill last week, but now, the ISIS terrorist attacks in Brussels are rushing the Senate’s final vote.

If passed, the bill would:

▪ Require refugees to provide their address, telephone number, work information and criminal record to the S.C. Department of Social Services within 30 days of arriving in the state.

▪ Require Social Services to share information about refugees with State Law Enforcement.
