The old prison closed its doors about five years ago, operating from 1929 to 2011.

Tours of the new facility will cost $14 each, which will include the complete history of the prison, moonshine tasting, and a souvenir glass to take home.

Southern Grace President Leanne Powell stated that the company is now the first working distillery to operate inside a prison facility in the U.S.:

The new space will include about 13,300 square feet for manufacturing and close to 5,000 square feet for Southern Grace’s new barrel house, as well as roughly 1,500 square foot for a visitor center.

The owners have stated that they’ve already come across old prison “memorabilia” hidden by the former prisoners, such as razor blades and shivs made out of spoons, which they plan on displaying around the old historic prison facility.

Rock Hill Store Owners Plead Guilty To $5 Million In Food Stamp Fraud In Federal Court

0

According to federal court records, three Rock Hill convenience store owners are now facing steep prison time after pleading guilty in to over $5 million in food stamp fraud.

The court documents show that the 3 Rock Hill store owners defrauding the federal government of $5,850,733.

Li Fang Phu, Hoang Long Huu Nguyen, and Dianne Margaret Phu perpetrated the scheme at the former Gas on the Spot store on South Cherry Road, and at the Daily Express Mart on Wilson Street (also known as T & D Food Mart LLC), across the street from the Rock Hill Housing Authority, and two blocks from the Rock Hill Police Department.

Prosecutors claim that the men repeatedly accepted food stamps for cigarettes, beer, and gas (one charge shows the acceptance of $59 in food stamps for a bottle of beer and a pack of cigarettes).

Food stamps, technically called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, are a federal program that gives assistance to the poor for food purchases only. Food stamps by law are not allowed to be used for non-food items.

The three suspects allegedly used signs, signals and other subtle clues to alert customers that they accepted food stamps for unapproved items. Li Phu faces one felony count; Nguyen faces two counts, and Dianne Phu is charged with three felonies. The charges now carry up to five years in prison for each count, and they might have to forfeit any property or proceeds “derived from or traceable to” the alleged fraud – including their stores.

Sentencing is now expected to happen sometime in 2017, the case’s federal prosecutor Jim May remarked in a press release.

michael-jordan-wins-presidential-medal-of-freedomCharlotte’s most famous resident just accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom yesterday at the White House. Michael Jordan joined Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Bill Gates, Bruce Springsteen, and 16 others in receiving medals from the president.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is widely regarded as the highest civilian honor that our nation can bestow upon its citizens. The award is given to individuals “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

This video, just released by the NBA, shows Michael Jordan receiving the medal from President Obama:

According to The White House’s press release, “Michael Jordan is one of the greatest athletes of all time. Jordan played 15 seasons in the NBA for the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards; he is currently a principal owner and chairman of the Charlotte Hornets. During his career, he won six championships, five Most Valuable Player awards, and appeared in 14 All-Star games.”

Michael Jordan now lives in Charlotte – he’s the current owner of the Charlotte Hornets and multiple other businesses and iconic brands. He’s also continually giving back to charities and to his local Charlotte community, he even recently donated $2 million to help bridge race relations during the Charlotte riots.

Last year, primarily due to the increase in value of NBA franchises, Jordan became the first billionaire NBA player in history and the world’s second-richest African-American.

Growing Protests Outside NC Governor’s Mansion As Democrats Demand McCrory Concede Election

0

As it currently stands, Roy Cooper leads Pat McCrory by 6,311 votes, but the McCrory campaign is continuing with their demands for recounts in over 34 counties.

Protests are now growing outside of the NC Governors mansion, demanding that Pat McCrory concedes the governor race:

North Carolina Republicans and the McCrory campaign has has now filed 52 protests in 34 counties, alleging that many votes should be disqualified because the voters might be dead, in prison, or ineligible because of some other reason.

Democrats, meanwhile, continue to assert that the vote count is accurate – which now shows Cooper in the lead by over 6,311 votes.

“The county boards are doing a good job so far, and North Carolina is the envy of the country when it comes to the election administration, there is absolutely no evidence of systemic voter fraud.” Democrat attorney Allison Riggs, told board members.

Here is Raleigh’s ABC Chanel 11 with more details about the protests and voting count challenges:

Today’s board meeting ended with an agreement that the counting process must continue until all county voting figures are finalized.

The state board is now scheduled to meet again next Tuesday, November 29th.

Charlotte’s 1,400 Acre ‘River District’ Just Approved By City Council – Largest Development in Decades

0

Yesterday, our City Council voted unanimously to approve the Queen City’s biggest new development in over two decades.

Charlotte’s new ‘River District’ will be built on nearly 1,400 acres of undeveloped land between the Charlotte Douglas Airport and the Catawba River. Lincoln Harris and Crescent Communities will be the primary 2 developers.

river-district-charlotte2It will basically be a whole new town, requiring miles of new roads to handle an estimated 120,000 additional vehicle trips per day, new schools, a new police station and new sewage facilities for dealing with the millions of gallons of additional wastewater.

The plans currently includes single family home neighborhoods, several office towers, retail corridors, hotels, and waterfront parks.

It will be split up into 3 distinct ‘districts’; the gateway district, transitional district and the town center district.

Rock Hill's Riverwalk
Rock Hill’s Riverwalk

The gateway district will include several office buildings, totaling 500,000 square feet, at least 50,000 square feet of retail space, and several new hotels. 250 hotel rooms. The transitional district will have 300 multifamily units, 1 million square feet of office space, and 25,000 square feet of retail. The heart of the new community will be the town center district, which will extend up to the Catawba River – it will feature 1,250 multifamily units, 300 single-family units, 2 million square feet of office space, 300,000 square feet of retail and 500 new hotel rooms.

The development will be somewhere between Ballantyne (2,000 acres – heavy office with a golf resort) and Rock Hill’s new Riverwalk community (1,008 acres – mostly residential with water-front shops and parks).

With over 500,000 square feet of retail and over 8 million square feet of office space proposed, the development would actually be larger in density than the original Ballantyne development.

What do you think about Charlotte’s new development?

North Carolina’s 2016 Ski Season Has Just Started At Sugar Mountain

0

The 2016 skiing season in North Carolina is now officially underway.

Sugar Mountain Resort just opened today with artificial snow makers cranking out the white stuff as fast as they can. Appalachian Ski Mountain will open tomorrow, and Beech Mountain is now set to open on Friday:

This past weekend’s insanely sharp cold spell allowed the resorts start cranking out the artificial snow and set a solid base coat for the rest of the season.

Although most of North Carolina is still in a drought, the snow machines have had enough water in their reservoir ponds to keep the white stuff flowing.

The resort’s biggest fears now continue to be the growing wildfires across the region – whether rain or snow, everyone at this point is hoping for as much precipitation as possible.
