Charlotte’s First Ultra-Luxury Apartment Community Is About To Open in Uptown

0

the-ascent-uptownWith the addition of Charlotte’s newest high-rise apartment community, Ascent Uptown, the Queen City takes one more step to becoming a truly world-class city.

The new mixed-use development will feature 300 apartment homes, over 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor rooftop amenity space on floors 32 and 33 and 4,000 square feet of retail located on the ground floor.

I recently had the privilege of visiting the progress on the Ascent Uptown, here’s a video I made, showing a taste of what new residents can expect:

“Ascent Uptown’s curving tower will provide residents with amazing 360 degree views of downtown,” said Todd Wigfield, Senior Managing Director of Development for Greystar.  “Within the design we have included a pedestrian friendly streetscape, an outdoor dining plaza and the building’s dramatic facade will further the reinvention of the Uptown skyline.”

The community will offer studio, one and two-bedroom apartment homes and penthouses ranging in size from 472 to 1,384 square feet of living space. Designer interior finishes will include quartz countertops, custom high-gloss cabinetry and wood style plank flooring.  Features will include chef-inspired kitchens with Bosch and GE appliances, Nest® Thermostats, Bluetooth® entry locks on every home, built-in USB ports, nine-foot ceilings, spa inspired bathrooms and oversized walk-in closets.  Floor-to-ceiling windows in every home will provide amazing unobstructed views of the Charlotte skyline and surrounding area.

The eco-friendly community is being built to meet LEED Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council.  Just as important as beauty and elegance is what lies within. Ascent Uptown isn’t just sleek and sexy; it will be modern and efficient. Our innovative water-powered heating and cooling system will be incredibly energy-efficient, resulting in an 80% total savings on electricity costs. Additionally, the ENERGY STAR® appliances and high-efficiency fixtures help limit water and energy waste.  Ascent Uptown will be both beautiful and smart.

Ascent Uptown will feature two floors of rooftop amenities including a state-of-the-art fitness center, cool-down lounge, entertainment kitchen, spaces for entertaining guests and conference rooms. Residents will enjoy a rooftop swimming pool with a spacious sundeck, cabanas, grilling stations and fire pit.

A two-level outdoor observation deck will provide unbroken views of Romare Bearden Park, the Charlotte Knights stadium and the Uptown skyline. The pet-friendly community will include extensive rooftop landscaping, a pet spa, bicycle storage and a controlled access parking garage with generous guest parking.

“Ascent Uptown is being developed in highly walkable location, situated in the burgeoning Third Ward neighborhood, fronting Charlotte’s new Romare Bearden Park,” said Ben Liebetrau, Senior Director of Development for Greystar. “The new community will provide convenient access to local transit, I-277, Bank of America Stadium, The Charlotte Convention Center and top employers in Uptown.”

Dozens Of Local Restaurants Participating In Charlotte’s First Wine & Tapas Week

0

charlotte-wine-and-tapas-weekCharlotte’s finest restaurants will come together to provide a tour of the world via wine and tapas April 21-30 for the first Charlotte Wine & Tapas Week. Each participating establishment will offer a pre-selected menu of perfectly paired wine and tapas – two glasses of wine with two tapas for either $30 or $35, depending on restaurant. The event will return in the fall.

“The relationship between wine and tapas is one of the best. And there is no better place to experience this relationship than in a restaurant with several light-hearted styles that – just like red and white wine – have many similarities and differences between them,” said Steve Caldwell, president of Elevate Lifestyle and co-founder of Charlotte Wine & Tapas Week.

Patrons will be able to tour their way through Italy’s wine one night, Spain’s flavorful food and bold wines another and then through Bordeaux’s wines the next.

A full list of restaurants, and corresponding menus, will be regularly updated and can be found on the event website. A sampling of restaurants already set to participate follows.

Bernardin’s Davidson Street Public House Deejai Thai Restaurant
Dogwood Southern Table & Bar Dressler’s at Metro Dressler’s at LKN
Enso Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar Essex Bar & Bistro Evoke Restaurant
Georges Brasserie Kid Cashew Malabar Spanish Cuisine

Poplar Street Café & Wine Bar Rai Lay Reid’s Fine Wine Restaurant

“Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or foodie geared up to try a new pairing, or a novice who wants to gain more wine knowledge, this event is a perfect occasion. With wine and tapas, it’s all about sharing, so grab your significant other, girlfriends, co-workers or family and enjoy an unforgettable experience locally with amazing company,” continued Caldwell.

Uber is the official transportation partner of the Charlotte Wine and Tapas Week, allowing first-time Uber users the chance for a $20 ride to a restaurant with the code “CLTWINETAPAS.” Diners who already use Uber may refer someone who hasn’t signed up yet and both individuals will receive their next ride free. Sign-up is available here: https://get.uber.com/new-signup/cltwinetapas

To kick off the excitement for the event, organizers launched the Wine and Tapas monthly e-magazine in December as a way for enthusiasts to explore the aroma of Charlotte’s wine, culinary and entertainment industries. There will be a print edition in the spring and fall of 2017 as well. Sign up on the website to receive updates.

Charlotte’s Animal Shelter Just Built A State-Of-The-Art Kitten Room – Now They Need Volunteers

CMPD Animal Care and Control has just built the cutest new addition to their shelter – a kitten room.

Last year, the organization found themselves becoming the surrogate mothers to hundreds of abandoned kittens, and that number is growing every month.

The kittens who are too young to take care of themselves will be bottle fed by volunteers every few hours in the new nursery:

The new kitten room at Charlotte’s Animal Care and Control will be funded entirely by grant money to provide this critical care for the infant cats. The room will come fully stocked with incubators for prematurely born kittens, bottle warmers, cribs, and plenty of blankets.

Their biggest need now is volunteers – they need people who might be willing to donate a small amount of time to feed the little kittens on continuing shifts.

The new nursery is now planning on hosting an open house on April 18 at 1 p.m. at 8315 Byrum Drive. If you’d like to volunteer, you can message Trisha Lopez at tlopez@CMPD.org.

You can follow all of their updates on their Facebook page here.

North Carolina Staged Epic Comeback To Win Their 6th National Championship

0

A year after falling short on this stage, North Carolina outplayed Gonzaga to secure the school’s sixth national title.

The Tar Heels staged an incredible comeback after being down 35-32 at the half, and after making only 4-of-27 3-point shots.

They came out of the half-time locker room on fire, scoring the first eight points of the second half to give themselves a 40-35 lead.

Gonzaga shot just 27.6% percent in the second half, but played their hearts out even up to the last minute. In the end, UNC simply played harder, scoring the final 8 points of the game and securing their 6th national title with a final score of 71-65.

North Carolina coach Williams now joins an elite group of legendary coaches that includes John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp and Jim Calhoun with his third national title.

“In the end, when you’re watching your kids jump around on the court, there’s no better feeling for a coach,” Williams commented after the game.

In true Tar Heel fashion, downtown Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street was flooded just moments after the final buzzer;

What did you think of last night’s game?

10 Worst Charlotte Restaurant Health Scores in March

0

charlotte-health-inspection-scoresEven though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standard slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, sick workers preparing food, and improper food temperature (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.

These are the top 10 worst currently standing inspection scores in Mecklenburg County:

South Carolina Just Won Their First NCAA National Championship In History

0

The South Carolina Gamecocks have just made history last night, beating Mississippi State in a 67-55 victory in the NCAA Women’s National Championship game – it was the first ever  national title in South Carolina’s history.

The team’s star forward, A’ja Wilson, scored a total of 23 points to help secure the victory.

It was a truly special moment for coach Staley, as she has made the Final Four three times as a player in the past (at Virginia) but never won. She also led the South Carolina Gamecocks to the national semifinals two years ago before losing to Notre Dame.

It was the third loss for Mississippi State against the Gamecocks over this past season. They also lost a game in the regular season, and the SEC Tournament title game.

This was just the sixth time in NCAA Tournament history that 2 teams from the same conference played for the national championship (2 of the other times were also by SEC teams).

Charlotte’s Inaugural Brewers Charity Championship Officially Launched

Brad Shell, owner of The Unknown Brewing Company in Charlotte’s South End area, has announced the city’s first donation competition for the beer community called Brewers Charity Championship. The Unknown Brewing Company invites and encourages all breweries in the Charlotte area to join in the collaborative competition to see who can raise the most amount of money for charities throughout 2017.

“As a brewery, I know we’re all donating to charity as it is, so I wanted to create a little friendly competition to get everyone in Charlotte involved and excited about raising money for local nonprofits. Let’s see what we can do when we all come together,” said Brad Shell, owner of The Unknown Brewing Company. “It’s going to be fun! The brewery that raises the most amount of money for charity will receive a championship wrestling belt, while an employee from the brewery with the lowest points will have to stand on the corner of Trade and Tryon in a chicken suit with a charity jar. There is no ‘loser’ when donating to charity, just a ‘Charity Chicken’.”

Charlotte area breweries that raise money for or donate beer to any nonprofit from January 1 through December 31, 2017 can participate in Brewers Charity Championship. Every donation has a point value associated with it; the point system is as follows:

  • 1 point: for every $5 donated to a charity (includes the retail value of donated brewery merchandise)
  • 1 point: for each pint of beer donated to a charity
  • 40 points: for each torpedo or sixtel donated to a charity
  • 120 points: for each ½ barrel or keg donated to a charity
Competing breweries will track their donations to 501(c)3 nonprofits monthly and submit donation totals to The Unknown Brewing Company throughout the year. Keep up with The Unknown Brewing Company’s official Facebook page for updates on Brewers Charity Championship and check out Yelp Charlotte’s event page to see which breweries are hosting events to raise money for local nonprofits.

Charlotte Douglas Is Adding 3 New Exciting Direct Flight Locations This Summer

charlotte-douglas-airportThe biggest airline network in the world just announced 3 new direct-flight locations for the Charlotte Douglas Airport.

Charlotte is also about to become one of the only test markets for American Airline’s new basic economy fare for passengers who want a low-cost option.

North Carolina Advances To National Championship – Barely Beating Oregon 77-76

0

After one of the most dramatic national championship losses in college basketball history (77-74 loss to Villanova last year), North Carolina is about to get another chance at the title.

Last night, the Tarheels just barely eked out a 77-76 victory against Oregon in the NCAA semifinal game. This will now be their 11th national championship game in the school’s history.

UNC and Oregon traded the lead several times throughout last night game, and the Tarheels almost gave up their final lead after four missed free throw in the final 5.8 seconds of the game.

UNC’s Meeks and Jackson were the clear MVPs of the game, with a combined 47 points.

They’ll now be advancing to the championship game on Monday night (4/3) starting at 9:20pm at University of Phoenix Stadium (you can buy tickets for the game here – and a flight out to Phoenix here).
