Lake Norman Real Estate Firm Giving Back Through Local Charity Golf Tournament

lake-realty-golf-tournamentA Lake Norman real estate firm is the title sponsor for the second annual golf tournament to help fight cystic fibrosis.

It all started within the mind of a courageous and remarkable young woman named Jessica Link. Her life was not the life of a typical baby, toddler, preteen, teenager and young adult. Right from the beginning of her life, she had to fight the debilitating genetic disease, cystic fibrosis.

But, what is cystic fibrosis?  Many of us hear the words, cystic fibrosis but do not truly understand what it does to a person. In simple terms, cystic fibrosis is a genetic progressive disease that affects around 30,000 people. It causes persistent lung infections and over time it limits their ability to breath. This defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in not only the lungs but also the pancreas and other organs.  However, every person has different degrees and severity of symptoms.

In 2011, Jessica was inspired by a married couple who both had cystic fibrosis. When the wife died, she saw that there was a  lack of financial or emotional support there for the husband. She also started noticing an increasing need for a better quality of life for adults with cystic fibrosis. It was then that The Spiritus Project was born. She chose the word “spiritus” because to her it symbolized both the painful reality of breathing everyday but also encompassed her unbending hopefulness that she saw life through.  The Spiritus Project helps families and patients with the financial and emotional stress they encounter when battling this life altering disease. The Spiritus Project had the opportunity to help one cystic fibrosis who had this to say about the organization,

“This organization is SO wonderful! In addition to providing very thoughtful, comforting gifts to adult patients… they provide much-needed assistance for expenses that often fall through the cracks when a patient is facing unexpected hardships, insurance issues…”

In 2016, the Spiritus Project along with sponsors launched the first Lake Realty Spirited Masters Tournament. There were more than 100 golfers, 50 volunteers, a $10,000 Putting Contest and much more. The success of the 2016 event spurred the plans to make this an annual fundraiser.

NC School System Asking For Sponsors to Ensure Students Don’t Go Hungry This Summer

north-carolina-hungry-studentsLast year, nearly 1 million North Carolina public school students were eligible to receive free or reduced priced meals through the National School Lunch Program. Out of that million, however, less than 120,000 actually received meals, due to a lack of sponsored sites that give out the meals during the summer.

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) School Nutrition Services Section Chief Lynn Harvey said, “Summer break should be an enjoyable time for students. Unfortunately, that may not be the case for many students because they may be hungry and unaware that there are summer programs that could provide them with nutritious, appealing meals.”

NCDPI Summer Nutrition Program Manager Cynthia Ervin said the large percentage of students who may need summer meal options is one reason why it is critical for the department to partner with organizations across the state to expand the number of summer meal sites.

One of the department’s most important summer collaborations to help meet this need is the Summer Nutrition Program, which provides appealing meals to students in their communities. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and Seamless Summer Option were established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to ensure economically disadvantaged children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is out.

Additionally, the USDA has identified 46 counties in North Carolina as high priority or “Strike Force” counties (look under Program Promotion, Outreach and Events to access list). The Strike Force campaign is intended to leverage local partnerships in high poverty and rural areas to ensure children have equal access to summer nutrition programs. In 2016, North Carolina had 168 sponsoring agencies and 3,227 summer nutrition sites where children could receive nutritious meals at no cost. Harvey said that although this is a good start, the need for summer nutrition sponsoring agencies and sites is at an all-time high.

In addition to public school districts, the SFSP allows qualifying public and private non-profit organizations to participate as a sponsor and receive federal reimbursement as long as the meals are served to eligible children 18 years of age or younger at an approved site. A site may be an open site; closed, enrolled site; or camp. The meals served at all sites must be provided at no charge to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

To learn how your organization may become involved, please visit the Summer Food Service Program website or contact NCDPI Summer School Nutrition Program Manager Cynthia Ervin or 919.807.3505.

Brexit continues to bring uncertainty to North Carolina shores

brexit-article-charlotte-storiesSince the day Britain announced their intentions to leave the European Union, the UK and its trading countries continue to remain uncertain about the economic impact of this major political development.

While the rest of the United States remains calm of what the media dubbed ‘Brexit,’ the UK’s long-time trading partner North Carolina is unsure of how this vote could affect the state’s financial industry as well as the long-term effects of it on companies that export goods.

In a 2016 white paper compiled by Bond Dickinson, it reported that NC-based exporting companies supported 164, 023 jobs in 2014. The same data explained that the state exported $30 billion worth of transportation equipment, chemicals, machinery, textiles, and electronics in 2015. Although the state is not among the UK’s top five export markets, its decision to leave the EU is expected to post a negative impact to their flourishing export sector.

“The dollar is reaching historic levels against the pound and against the euro,” said Jeffrey Hay, a managing partner at Womble Carlyle in Charlotte, in an interview with McClatchy DC Bureau “which is going to make – if you look at the real impact on North Carolina companies – it’s going to make our ability to export goods to Europe really difficult.”

“So the impact from the economic point of view, of Brexit, in the short term, I think, is just going to be that the dollar is going to be so strong that it’s going to hurt our export market significantly, and that’s not just U.K.-focused,” he said. “That’s going to be across the board because the dollar is such a safe currency.”

The prolonged uncertainty is predicted to impact investments:

  • Stocks of banks and some of the Fortune 500 companies fell sharply
  • Banks will be challenged to grow profits due to prolonged low interest rates
  • Financial institutions facing revenue and expense challenges
  • Investors concerned about their holdings
  • Affect companies’ plans for expansions
  • Further threatens economic growth

Following the UK Parliament’s passing of the Brexit bill, Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May has announced her final decision to trigger Article 50 (the EU provision that allows countries to exit the organization) on March 29. Since the process will take two years to execute fully, the UK will be able to officially leave the European Union no later than April 2019.

The most evident effect is the fall of GBP post-Brexit, which several market observers foresee to further suffer losses as the UK triggers Article 50. Market analysts predict the GBP to experience more volatility during the two-year exit process.

“While the market took the news positively as it implied a higher probability of a ‘soft Brexit,’ it’s not yet over and in the long run the pound is likely to trade lower,” said Roger Hallam, chief investment officer for Currency Management at J.P. Morgan Asset Management in his interview with FXCM.

As the GBP’s value plummets, the exchange rate is expected to fluctuate, which will lead to global growth, slow downs and have a major setback on the US economy.

NC economic analysts recommend companies with supply contracts in the UK to identify their ‘risk areas’ to examine their options ahead of time and build business contingency plans before the Brexit negotiation phase.

“They need to look at their supply contracts, for example, to understand what risks those contracts create for their business and what changes they need to be thinking about, you know, to deal with things,” Hay said. “Import tariffs might be applicable to their supply arrangements.”

To relive any apprehensions brought about by Brexit, British International Trade Secretary Liam Fox announced that the UK will open three new trade offices in the US, including in Raleigh. These US cities were chosen due to “their economic productivity and well-established research and development institutions.”

However, the LGBT community is still unhappy with the possible changes brought about by the conservative rule of the BTI, which further affect the uncertain partnership of NC and the UK’s business sectors.
