Allstate Is About To Add 2,250 New Jobs In Charlotte

allstate-insurance-expansion-in-charlottOne of the largest job expansions in Charlotte’s history was recently announced by Governor Cooper.

Allstate Insurance Company will be adding 2,250 new jobs, and investing over $22 million to expand their facilities in the Queen City.

“Charlotte’s role as a leader in the financial services sector makes our state an excellent fit for Allstate,” said Governor Cooper. “North Carolina has so much to offer growing companies, including our celebrated universities and community colleges, highly skilled workforce, competitive business climate and outstanding quality of life.”

Allstate said that the abundant availability of a skilled and educated workforce in Charlotte is one of the key reasons for its decision to expand there.

“With this company and other CEOs across the world, when they’re talking about expanding here, the No. 1 thing they want to know about is workforce,” Cooper said. “Do you have the well-trained people? Do you have people with critical thinking skills who can perform the jobs we create?”

Another major reason for the expansion was the approval of a massive new ‘Jobs Development Incentive Grant’, which authorizes reimbursement of up to $17.8 million over 12 years for business development in our state.

Allstate hasn’t yet selected a location for their Charlotte expansion. They currently employ roughly 1,400 people at their main campus in University City’s Innovation Park. The average salary of the 2,250 new employees will be roughly $46,800 each, including a mix of claims specialists, actuaries, underwriters, support and personnel, and IT positions.

Allstate is headquartered in Northfield Township, Illinois and is currently the largest property insurance company in the country, providing coverage to over 16 million Americans.

Star Sightings Expected Around Charlotte This Week During The PGA Championship

This week’s PGA Championship at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club is already bringing out the stars.

…and we’re only in the practice round.

Yesterday afternoon, Justin Bieber made a surprise stop at Tuesday’s PGA Championship practice round.

He followed Bubba Watson around the course, receiving pointers on improving his own game along the way;

Ron Riviera also made an appearance on Monday, seen at the pro shop and at several of the holes.

It’s now anyone’s guess who else might show up this week at one of the world’s biggest golfing events.

It’s likely that two-time NBA Champion Steph Curry might stop by, given the fact that he’s from Davidson, and that he loves golf…and maybe he’ll bring along his good friend Justin Timberlake, or perhaps fellow sports legend and golfer Michael Jordan?

Dashboard Confessional, The All American Rejects, John Mayer, and J. Cole are all playing concerts in Charlotte over the coming week – maybe we’ll see a few of them on the course?

This Week’s PGA Championship Will Bring In An Estimated $100 Million To The Charlotte Region

pga-championship-in-charlotteToday is the first day of The 99th PGA Championship, hosted at Charlotte’s prestigious Quail Hollow country club in South Charlotte.

Practice rounds will be played Monday-Wednesday, and Championship Rounds will start on Thursday and conclude on Sunday afternoon.

Charlotte Chamber president and CEO Bob Morgan stated that the PGA Championship would promote Charlotte “to a worldwide audience accounting for an estimated $100 million economic impact. The level of exposure to golf fans internationally, disproportionately made up of business people and decision makers, is going to be ridiculously beneficial for Charlotte”

The economic impact for the Charlotte region would be generated primarily through tourism transportation, lodging, restaurants, and general spending.

The home rental site Airbnb.com alone has reported that they estimate total earnings of at $550,000 this week, stating that over 1,400 guests have already checked in to Queen City homes for the week.

Another booking site, HomeAway.com, said their bookings are up 94% from the same period a year ago, and are almost completely depleted of inventory (they’re now offering free listings to Charlotte residents for this week – homes are renting for $800/night and up in South Charlotte).

In addition to the fans who are traveling to Charlotte to watch the tournament, it will also be televised and streamed online to over 200 countries and over 570 million households, according to PGA of America.

This week’s tournament will be the most significant sporting event ever hosted in the Queen City, opening up the possibility of even bigger events in the future (if we do a good job).

If you’re interested in going, you can still pick up practice round tickets for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday starting at $5, championship round tickets for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting at $53, and weekly passes are starting at $419.

Republican Senator From NC Creates Bill To Block President Trump From Firing FBI Special Counsel

In a surprising display of pushback against President Trump, North Carolina Republican Senator Tom Tillis has just created a bill that would limit our President’s ability to fire anyone from the special counsel.

The bipartisan bill was drafted with Democratic Senator Chris Coons from Delaware and now has strong support from both parties in Congress. It’s now being called the ‘Special Counsel Integrity Act’, essentially allowing Mueller or any other special counsel member to challenge their hypothetical firing in court, including an automatic review by a three-judge panel.

Tillis made it clear the new measure goes beyond Trump and Mueller.

“This is about the Department of Justice,” the first-term senator said. “This is about my confidence in the attorney general and my confidence in a Department of Justice to move forward in an appropriate manor. … We don’t want to restrict the administration’s authority or the Department of Justice from removing a counsel. We just want to make sure to the American people they can be convinced it was done for the right reasons.”

CMPD Warning Residents About A New ‘911 Revenge’ Scam

Law enforcement is now telling people not to engage in telemarketers if you are upset.

A new scam is sweeping the country that’s being called ‘911 revenge’.

A recent case involved a telemarketer calling 911 to report robbers inside a home, wearing masks and carrying bats.

Within minutes, officers arrived at the home and discovered the homeowner wasn’t in any trouble at all.

After their investigation, police discovered that the victim had recently received several calls from a telemarketer who was selling iTunes cards, after more than one call, the homeowner became upset and started arguing.

The telemarketer then decided to get back at the homeowner by calling in a fake robbery at the home.

The CMPD have stated that it isn’t a widespread problem yet, but they are aware of it and they know of several local cases of the scam being attempted.

They say that the best advice for anyone who gets a cell phone call from an unknown number is to let it go to voicemail.

8 C-130 Hercules ‘Buzzed’ The Charlotte Skyline Yesterday Afternoon in Historic Flight

Eight massive C-130 Hercules transport planes buzzed the Charlotte skyline yesterday afternoon at roughly 1,000 feet in the sky (the Bank of America tower is 871 feet tall).

The historic flight was a celebration of the very last flight the 46-year-old C-130s will ever take.

Charlotte’s 145th Wing National Guard unit will be transitioning to C-17 Globemaster III planes on Oct. 1.

The 8 members of the 145th Wing flew their massive C-130s together over Uptown Charlotte and the North Carolina mountains before performing a supply drop in Stanly County.

The formation flew out to New London to conduct the drops, then returned back to their Charlotte base.

Charlotte Eagles Take Down Thunder Bay Chill 2-1 To Win The 2017 National Championship

Charlotte Eagles win national championship gameYesterday afternoon the Charlotte Eagles made history by winning their first ever PDL National Championship.

The Thunder Bay Chill scored the first goal at about 21 minutes into the first half, but about 5 minutes laters, the Eagles answered back and tied things up.

The two teams remained tied for the next 30 minutes before 20-year-old Ryan Williams buried the ball into the back of the Chill’s net just before the game ended at minute 61.

This is the second time the Charlotte Eagles have played in a championship game (the first was in 2009 as a member of the USL Pro League), and the first time since joining the PDL league.

The Premier Development League (PDL) is comprised of a total of 72 franchise teams in four conferences throughout the United States and Canada, including 19 clubs that are owned by or partnered with a professional MLS club.

Downtown Cornelius Was Evacuated Yesterday During Bomb Scare

downtown-cornelius-bomb-scareYesterday afternoon, 29-year-old John Patrick Rees walked into the Cornelius Police Station and stated that he had the materials to make a bomb inside his car.

Cornelius PD immediately detained Rees, began to close off and evacuate the area, and called in the FBI and CMPD bomb squad.

They also set up several detours to divert traffic away from any anticipated blast-zone;

According to Cornelius PD’s press release, “CMPD’s bomb squad deployed the bomb robot and there were some suspicious items and powders located in the subject’s vehicle that if combined could have become potentially explosive. CMPD took possession of those items and will destroy them at an undetermined time.”

Rees is now being interviewed by local and federal officials to determine if he will face any charges.
