US Open Fat Bike Championship Coming To North Carolina

This coming weekend, the US Open Fat Bike Championship will be descending on Wrightsville Beach during an exciting weekend of pedal-pounding action.

“Fat bike beach racing in the one-mile oval format is an exciting sport for both athletes and spectators,” said Shawn Spencer, race chairman. “The number of entries, the fitness level of the athletes, and the crowd size on the beach has improved every year. In 2017, racers from seven states participated.”

The 4th annual US Open Fat Bike Beach Championship will be held March 16-18, 2018, in Wrightsville Beach, with activities and races based at host hotel Blockade Runner Beach Resort. There is no admission charge for spectators.

“Fat bike racing, especially in the elite division, requires incredible conditioning and stamina,” said Spencer. “We’re seeing CrossFit and triathletes use fat bikes as an alternative method to stay in shape. Pedaling for miles on a fat bike in soft sand at the beach is exuberantly painful.”

Charlotte Checkers Goalie Just Became The 13th In History To Score A Goal (Video)

Yesterday evening during Charlotte Checkers last game against the Hartford Wolfpack, we witnessed history in the making.

Late in the third period, with the Checkers up by 5-2, the Wolfpack decided to pull their goalie to put one extra offensive player on the ice, less than a minute later, Checkers goalie Alex Nedeljkovic became the 13th goalie in league history to score a goal.

“I was ecstatic. When I saw it was going in I jumped and I was throwing my hands in the air. I was like a little kid again,” Nedeljkovic commented.

Charlotte would go on to win last night’s game with a score of 7-3.

Nedeljkovic was a second-round draft pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014 and has spent most of his professional career playing for the AHL’s Checkers. This season he has appeared in 42 games for the Checkers and had a .903 save percentage heading into last night’s game.

The Checkers are now ranked 4th in their devision with 35 wins, 24 losses, and 14 more games to play in the season.

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery Is Building A Massive New Facility In Cornelius

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Charlotte’s biggest craft beer maker, is moving forward with their massive new facility next to Lake Norman. They’ve now confirmed a construction start time of early 2019, with a grand opening expected by the end of the year.

The brewery’s new 51,000 square-foot facility will be located at 20401 Zion Ave., in Cornelius, NC, the location of the old MacLean Curtis facility, which moved up to Mooresville last year.

Their second Lake Norman area location will feature a full restaurant, biergarten, and a 17-barrel brewery.

Total cost projections of the new facility are around $10 million, with $3 million already spent on purchasing the 24-acre site.

Charlotte Might See The Last Snowfall Of The Season This Weekend

It looks like the Charlotte region might be getting some snow this weekend.

The National Weather Service is showing at least a 22% chance of snowfall in Charlotte Saturday night into Sunday morning;

Charlotte meteorologist Brad Panovich gives a more in-depth look at the cold air system that will be building this weekend, and when and where snow will likely fall Sunday and Monday.

“The track of the storm is still key. Depending on the track that’ll be key to how much snow we could actually end up getting or if we get any snow at all,” Panovich commented. “The highest probability is obviously in the mountains with 60 to 70% chance of seeing one inch of snow.”

Be sure to have some de-icing salt handy for Sunday night – especially if the sidewalks and roads are wet when the sunset, as it will stay below 32 degrees through the night.

According to the Weather Channel, this weekend’s snowfall will likely be the last of the season, as tempuratures are expected to slowly warm up over the next 10 days and will likely stay there through the end of March and into April;

This week Discovery Place was announced as Charlotte’s top museum and attraction for 2017 in the annual North Carolina Museums and Historic Attractions Survey.

Seeing 715,453 visitors in 2017, Discovery Place ranked as the #1 Museum and Attraction for Charlotte, #5 most popular in North Carolina, and the only Charlotte institution to make the Top 20 list in the state.

“We are honored to be continuously recognized as a top attraction in North Carolina and Charlotte, and serve as a trusted education resource in our communities,” said Discovery Place president and CEO, Catherine Wilson Horne. “I am confident that we will continue to build on these accomplishments as we strive to meet the needs of our growing communities all across the region.”

In 2017, Discovery Place was also honored by The Institute of Museum and Library Service as a finalist for the Medal of Honor. This is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries in recognition of their service for making a difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

Last year, Discovery Place celebrated the milestone of serving over 100,000 people across the region through its community access program, Welcome. Discovery Place Nature opened a new digital planetarium in the Museum’s original 1964 Charlotte A. Kelly Planetarium, offering both multimedia dome presentations and seasonal star shows. Discovery Place Science opened two new labs and exhibitions: the new biomedical lab Explore More Me and health science exhibition Being Me, and the new makerspace Thinker Space and Think It Up exhibition on the newly renovated Level 3.

The North Carolina Museums and Historic Attractions Survey is researched and issued by Carolina Publishing Associates of Matthews, NC. This is the 14th year of the survey.

Charlotte Now Ranked #3 in America For STEM Job Growth

According to a recent report by Forbes, STEM jobs (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) have been slowly shifting from the name-brand cities of New York, Chicago, and Houston, toward smaller, more affordable metros.

One of the primary leaders of this change is Charlotte, coming in as the 3rd highest STEM job growth in the country, just behind San Francisco (#2) and Orlando (#1) and just ahead of Grand Rapids (#4) and Salt Lake City (#5).

Charlotte is Asking For Feedback About Dockless Bike Sharing Program

The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have just launched a city-wide survey to ask resident’s about their new ‘dockless bike sharing’ program.

According to the city, “Dockless bike share is a new bike share model that allows users to rent a bike from virtually anywhere through a smartphone application, and park it when their ride ends. Dockless bike share companies are emerging in cities across the country, including the City of Charlotte. In response, the City of Charlotte has started a Bike Share Pilot Program to test the viability of dockless bike share in the Charlotte community.”

The program includes 4 separate dockless bike companies, ofo, Limebike, Mobike, and Spin. Since the program first launched this past November, Charlotte has seen over 10,000 people take over 40,000 trips on dockless bikes.

The city has asked us to help distribute their online survey to help determine if the dockless bike program will continue, and what changes should be made to it.

Charlotte’s Independence High School Advances To The State Championship

Head basketball coach at Independence High School, Preston Davis, has led his team to the state championships after a record 30 wins in his 9th season as head coach.

This incredible feat comes just 21 years after he was a player on the Independence High School team when they won the state championship game.

The Independence Patriots (30-1) now have 3 all-conference players and a better record than their upcoming rival, Wake Forest’s Heritage High School (25-4). The Patriots are ranked 3rd in the state and 41st in the nation, while Heritage Huskies are ranked 6th in the state and 126th in the nation.

The Patriots will take on Heritage at the University of North Carolina in the 4A championship game tomorrow (March 10th) starting at 7:30pm.

NC Officials Report 12 More Flu Deaths Last Week – Total Of 276 Deaths This Season

Today the North Carolina Health and Human Services Department confirmed that 12 more people have died from this season’s flu virus. The new numbers cover the time between Feb. 25 and March 3.

This is now one of the worst years for the flu outbreak in recent history, with a total of 276 deaths in North Carolina from flu-related symptoms since Oct. 1st, 2017.

To make matters even worse, those numbers only reflect deaths of people who tested positive for the flu and that were actually reported to the state. There are likely far more flu-related deaths across the state that were misdiagnosed or unreported.

The NCHHSD warns people who think they might have the flu to contact their doctor immediately to see if they need treatment with an antiviral drug such as Tamiflu or a more natural remedy such as Oscillococcinum.

“Early treatment with an antiviral drug can help prevent flu infections from becoming more serious. Treatment with a prescription antiviral drug is especially important for hospitalized patients, people with severe flu illness and people who are at high risk of serious flu complications based on their age or health.”

Other precautions people can take to protect against the spread of flu and other viruses include:

  • Staying home when sick until fever-free for at least 24 hours
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then discarding the tissue promptly
  • Washing hands frequently, preferably with soap and water
