Kentucky Fried Chicken®, known for bringing authentic regional flavors to kitchen tables nationwide, will begin testing its newest product, KFC Chicken and Waffles, in North Carolina. From June 18-July 29, 2018, participating KFC locations will delight consumers in Charlotte and Asheville, NC with the ultimate Southern staple. The limited time offering includes a mouthwatering pairing of traditional Belgium liege-style waffles alongside KFC’s famous Extra Crispy fried chicken for a sweet, crispy delightful indulgence.

KFC’s Chicken and Waffles include authentic Belgium liege-style waffles made with pearl sugar imported directly from Belgium. Each waffle is made to order and topped with KFC’s famous Extra Crispy fried chicken, double breaded and open fried to create its signature, extra crispy crunch. The southern favorite comes with a side of syrup to harmonize this sweet and savory pairing.

Chicken and Waffles are a growing food trend. In fact, according to a recent AskSuzy (CrowdTap) Survey, more than half of Millennials have had Chicken and Waffles in the past six months. KFC, always in search for new ways to celebrate Southern-inspired flavor combinations, recognizes that Chicken and Waffles creates a unique opportunity to make this authentic regional dish accessible to the masses.

“We know that chicken and waffles has a cult following across the country, especially in the south, but not everyone has it available close by,” said Mike Wesley, KFC U.S. Senior Marketing Director. “We are always looking to add new menu items and Chicken and Waffles is perfect for our next test market product. We’re excited to hear what North Carolinian taste buds have to say.”

Following the release of KFC’s Southern-inspired flavors Nashville Hot, Georgia Gold Honey Mustard BBQ and Smoky Mountain BBQ, KFC’s Chicken and Waffles limited time offering comes in a variety of options, including a $5 (tax extra) 2-piece basket, which comes with a choice of drum and thigh or two Extra Crispy tenders. Customers can also add a side to any meal for an additional $1 (tax extra).

With original flavors such as spicy, smoky, crispy Nashville Hot, Smoky Mountain BBQ and Georgia Gold honey mustard BBQ, KFC continues to bring Southern-inspired regional flavors to restaurants and homes across the country.

Erin Brockovich Speaks Out Against Unusually High Number of Lake Norman Cancer Cases

Famous consumer advocate Erin Brockovich just spoke out against an unusually high number of cancer cases around Lake Norman.

Last night, she shared some details from a recent NCPolicyWatch.org report, which states that two zip codes in Iredell County have been seeing 1.7 times the normal rates of thyroid cancer between 2012 and 2016.

Erin writes, “Genetics and/or environmental exposure can increase a person’s risk for thyroid cancer. Exposure to radiation, flame retardants and perfluorinated compounds, such as GenX and PFOAs, can also enhance the risk,” in her post, which as now been shared over 750 times;

The NC Policy Watch article is based on a recent Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) report, which confirmed the unusually high number of cases.

“To evaluate the occurrence of cancer in the concerned ZIP Codes, Standardized Incidence Ratios (SIRs) were calculated to compare the number of observed cancer cases to what would be expected in the two ZIP Codes, based on the cancer rates in North Carolina. The SIRs were calculated as the number of observed cases divided by the number of expected cases for the 22-year period (1995-2016) and for the five-year period (2012-2016)…Based on the SIR analyses, the number of observed thyroid cancer cases in Iredell County and the two ZIP Codes were statistically significantly greater than expected,” the DHHS report noted.

The DHHS found roughly twice the number of cancer cases as should be expected from the two zip codes;

North Carolina’s Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch will now review the data and determine the next steps to be taken.

The grocery wars are continuing to heat up, not only here in Charlotte, but also on a national level as discount stores like Aldi and Lidl go head-to-head against premium grocers like Publix and Harris Teeter.

Market Force Information recently took a poll of over 12,000 shoppers across the country to discover which is now America’s favorite and Matthews-based Harris Teeter ranked among the top 10.

According to a representative from the company, they polled shoppers about “their grocery shopping habits including brand preference, customer experience, brand engagement and brand awareness.”

Wegman’s ranked #1 in the country with their “fresh produce, reasonable prices and massive stores”, and Publix came in a close second;

Charlotte Hosting ‘Dog Flu Vaccination Day’ To Stop The Spread Of Contagious ‘Dog Flu’

0

Today Merck Animal Health announced Dog Flu Vaccination Day, which will occur on Wednesday, June 20. Participating veterinary clinics in Charlotte will offer specials to pet parents who schedule dog flu vaccination appointments on this day.

Dog flu is a year-round, highly contagious respiratory illness that is commonly spread among social dogs. There are two strains of dog flu – H3N8 and H3N2 – which have infected dogs in nearly all 50 states. Cases continue to grow this year, with over 600 confirmed cases between January and May. Common symptoms of dog flu include high fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose and, in some cases, pneumonia – which can be life-threatening.

“Social dogs that frequently interact with other dogs at places like dog parks, doggie daycares, grooming facilities and boarding kennels are at an increased risk for dog flu,” said Dr. Jamie Laity, veterinarian at Animal Medical Hospital in Charlotte. “They should be vaccinated on an annual basis to be protected against both strains. Luckily the vaccine is easily given in two doses, two to four weeks apart, then boosted once a year.”

Pet parents should call their veterinarian to inquire about clinic specials for Dog Flu Vaccination Day and make an appointment for June 20. They can also learn more about dog flu, the signs and symptoms and where to find the vaccine in their neighborhood by visiting dogflu.com.

NC Becoming The First State In America To Pay State Workers $15 Minimum Wage

The North Carolina legislature just approved our largest budget in history. The new $23.9 billion budget will increase minimum wage pay of public employees to $15 per hour – we’re now the first state in America to do so.

Last week, Governor Cooper vetoed the budget because he said it didn’t do enough to improve public education or the environment, and it gave even more tax breaks to corporations and wealthy individuals.

The Republican-led North Carolina Senate, however, voted last week to override the veto by a vote of 34-13, and the House followed suit with a 73-44 vote to officially make the new $23.9 billion budget law.

North Carolina is now the first state ever to pay a $15 an hour ($31,200/year) minimum wage to state employees. This applies to all permanent employees in state agencies and universities, estimated to be at least 12 percent of the state’s workforce.

All state employees will also receive a pay raise of at least 2 percent and five days of bonus leave.

What do you think about the new budget?

That’s where Charlotteans can really make a small but measurable difference. As the Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes Charlotte, Tina Postel shares why the close of each school year is one of the most crucial for thousands of children across Mecklenburg County.

Charlotte Douglas Changes Flight Patterns And Which Neighborhoods Hear More Noise

0

As the Charlotte Douglas Airport continues to grow, and the number of flights continues to increase, changes are being made to standard flight patterns, affecting which neighborhoods around Charlotte hear the most airplane noise.

Reddit user Nexusheli, who works at the airport, just posted a before 2017 and after 2017 flight pattern chart, which shows where many of the changes are being made;

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also recently released a national transportation noise map that shows exactly how much noise people are exposed to from airports and highways around the country.

Here is what the traffic noise around Charlotte looks like:

air-noise-around-charlotte

According to the map, those under the yellow sections can experience noise reaching 60 decibels, which they say is equal to “conversational speech”, and those under the dark orange and red sections may experience sounds upwards of 80 decibels, which they say would be equal to a garbage disposal.

Charlotte’s main airport is now America’s fifth busiest airport based on takeoffs and landings, currently with over 700 daily flights.

Do you hear any airplane noise where you live? How loud do you think it is?
