Charlotte Ranks Among Top Cities In America For Postal Worker Dog Attacks

0

dog-attacks-in-charlotteThe US Postal Service recently released its annual count of postal employees who have been attacked by dogs last year. USPS noted that there were a total of 6,755 attacks in 2017 – 200 more than 2016.

Charlotte came in at 18th in the country for mail-man/dog attacks last year, according to rankings, just behind Phoenix, and just ahead of Memphis on the list.

There were a total of 33 attacks last year in Charlotte, 18 of which required medical attention.

The US postal service releases the dog-attack numbers as part of Dog Bite Prevention Week, along with some advice on how people can keep their dogs from biting letter carriers.

Some of the top tips included;

  • If a letter carrier delivers mail to the front door, put the dog in a different room. Dogs have burst through screen doors and plate-glass windows to attack visitors.
  • Some dogs might perceive a letter carrier handing mail directly to a family member as a threat, so the postal service advises not taking mail from letter carriers in the presence of the family pet.
  • On USPS.com, people can indicate whether they have dogs at their address. This helps fill-in letter carriers who don’t know all the neighborhood hounds.

The statement by the Postal Service also noted that it places the safety of its employees as a top priority – if a letter carrier feels threatened by a dog, or if a dog is loose or unleashed, they will not hesitate to ask the homeowners to pick up mail at a post office until they can prove the pet has been restrained. In light of the continued increase in attacks, many mail carriers have even started carrying protective dog spray.

Charlotte Teacher Starts New Academy In Response To Ever-Increasing CMS Testing

0

A new reading academy in South Charlotte is changing the way young students learn how to read in the face of ever-increasing public school testing.

Lisa Palladino started Ballantyne Reading Academy after feeling like she was spending more time testing and assessing students than helping them improve as a public school teacher.

When I returned to teaching after time home with my own children, I discovered how much had changed in the classroom. Teachers no longer had the autonomy to respond to their students’ needs and were spending the majority of their time assessing, not teaching. In Kindergarten, dramatic play had been replaced with weekly DIBELS,” Lisa told me. “Learning to read should be a joyful experience. Young children especially are such eager learners and I knew I could nurture that enthusiasm to create life-long readers and learners.”

Since starting the academy, her custom-tailored programs have even won her several awards as a top tutoring academy in the region.

She initially started the academy focusing only on pre-school aged students, but quickly expanded her services and her staff as word of her success spread.

“Parents who originally sought us out for their preschooler continue to send their now third, fourth and fifth graders to us as their children want to continue learning with us. My original idea to provide joyful learning opportunities for our youngest learners has grown as the children have grown,” Lisa commented.

According to their website, Ballantyne Reading Academy‘s primary services now include;

Preschool and Kindergarten readiness skills of:
•Print awareness and letter formation
•Vocabulary
•Phonological awareness
•Narrative (story telling and re-telling)

Specialized training for those over 5 years old:
•Enrichment for gifted students and advanced learners
•Academic remediation and support
•Writing strategies
•Fluency and comprehension
•Math instruction
•Diagnostic services for literacy-related disabilities

Panthers Take Down Coyboys 16-8 In Season Opener

0

The Dallas Cowboys just lost to the now undefeated Carolina Panthers yesterday evening at the Bank of America Stadium with a final score of 16-8.

The Panthers dominated most of the 1st half, but then started to come unraveled with about 8:51 left in the 2nd quarter.

The defense stepped up and held the Cowboys to just 8 points for the remainder of the game.

Watch the full Panthers Vs Cowboys recap video here.

This was the first game that QB Cam Newton was being guided by the team’s new Offensive Coordinator, Norv Turner.

“It’s still early. I felt extremely comfortable with what he was doing,” Newton commented. “I understood the game plan going into it and it’s still kind of give and take.”

The Panthers will now take on the Atlanta Falcons on the road this coming Sunday afternoon.

NC Officials Urging Residents To Prepare For Possible Cat 4 Hurricane Florence

0

As Hurricane Florence continues to move closer to the Carolina coast, officials are now warning residents to prepare for the worst.

NC Governor Roy Cooper first issued a State of Emergency this past Friday, and again echoed his call for residents to prepare in yesterday’s NCDOT press release.

“Everyone in North Carolina needs to keep a close eye on Florence and take steps now to get ready for impacts later this week,” Gov. Cooper said. “State emergency management, transportation, health experts and others are making sure North Carolina is prepared for the storm, and I urge the public to review your emergency plans and gather your supplies now.”

The National Hurricane Center sent out the following alert this morning;

  1. There is an increasing risk of life-threatening impacts from Florence: storm surge at the coast, freshwater flooding from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event inland, and damaging hurricane-force winds. While it is too soon to determine the exact timing, location, and magnitude of these impacts, interests at the coast and inland from South Carolina into the mid-Atlantic region should closely monitor the progress of Florence, ensure they have their hurricane plan in place, and follow any advice given by local officials.
  2. Large swells affecting Bermuda and portions of the U.S. East Coast will continue this week. These swells will result in life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Charlotte’s meteorologist Tara Lane noted that the storm could approach the North Carolina coast as a Cat 4 storm Wednesday night into Thursday morning;

According to the National Hurricane Center, storm-force winds from Hurricane Florence could hit Charlotte as soon as early Thursday morning;

There still is a chance that the storm will swing to the north and avoid direct contact with North Carolina, or even possibly swing back out to sea, according to the latest GFS Ensemble Tracks;

Please take some time to review your safety plans, become familiar with local evacuation routes, and continue to monitor Hurrican Florence’s path on NHC.NOAA.Gov.

Everyone living near the coast sure also ensure their hurricane supply kit is stocked and ready to use in case of power loss or flash flooding.

Duke Energy recommends the following items (available via Amazon’s same-day Prime Now service if your local store has already been cleaned out);

UPDATE 9/13/2018 8:00am:

Hurricane Florence has just been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, but has also grown in overall size, increasing the reach of its damaging winds. It could still marginally strengthen before making landfall, but it will likely remain a Category 2 or weak Category 3.

Please help spread the word!

According to a new study by JD Power, Charlotte Water ranks 11th in the South for residential customer satisfaction.

The study, now in its third year, measured the overall satisfaction among residential customers of 88 water utilities in four geographic regions: Midwest, Northeast, South and West.

Overall satisfaction was measured by examining 33 attributes within six factors (listed in order of importance): delivery; price; conservation; billing and payment; communications; and customer service.

Charlotte Water’s score of 722 ranked just above the South’s average of 716;

To test the quality of water you’re receiving, home testing kits are now available to Charlotte residents.

If you’re not satisfied with your water quality, the best solution is to install a reverse osmosis filter on any faucet you get drinking water from.

Gastonia’s New Gander Mountain Is Giving Everyone A Free $10 Gift Card

0

The Charlotte area’s first re-branded Gander Outdoors (formerly Gander Mountain) store just announced a new promotion to attract more customers – a free $10 dollar gift certificate with no strings attached.

They announced the new promotion earlier this week on their Facebook page;

Here is their ‘no-strings-attached’ gift card that can either be downloaded and printed or shown directly to the cashier on your phone or tablet;

Last year, Gander Mountain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and one month later, Marcus Lemonis, the star of CNBC’s hit show ‘The Profit’, purchased the entire company and all of its assets and stores.

Marcus has since been relaunching the brand under the new name, ‘Gander Outdoors’, including 3 Charlotte area stores in Mooresville (236 Norman Station Blvd.), Gastonia (3704 E Franklin Blvd), and Monroe (3151 W Hwy 74).

According to their press release, the new stores will bring more than 170 jobs to the area.

“It was important to me to bring the Gander Outdoors back to the wonderful community of Charlotte because the employees were top notch and the store was a great performer serving the outdoor enthusiast community,” said Marcus Lemonis. “In addition to the Charlotte locations, we are currently pursuing other locations for reopening and expansion.”

Charlotte’s 10 Worst Restaurant Health Scores in August

0

Even though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standards slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.
