Bojangles’ Coliseum Invites Community to Share Memories For New Public Art Installation

0

As part of work related to the connector facility linking Bojangles’ Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium, the City of Charlotte, ASC, Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) and ODELL Architects will work to create a public art installation that pays homage to the legacy of the 63-year-old venues.

Artist Blane De St. Croix of BDSC Studio has been commissioned to create an impactful artwork that responds to the parameters of the site, the aesthetics of the architecture, and the history and character of Bojangles’ Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium. To inspire this artwork, the City of Charlotte and CRVA are asking residents to share their memories of the venue through a survey, which will inspire the content of the artwork.

“We hear from so many Charlotte residents reminiscing about the experiences they’ve had at these venues,” says CRVA CEO Tom Murray. “From cheering on the Checkers to experiencing their first concert to celebrating a graduation here, both venues have become an integral piece of Charlotte history.”

The public art installation comes as part of the City of Charlotte’s Public Art Ordinance, which specifies that the funds for public art are based on “an amount equal to one percent (1%) of the projected construction costs at the time the project is included in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan.” Artwork costs earmarked for this project are estimated to be $94,350 to cover all artist fees, design, engineering, testing, fabrication, permitting and installation as well as travel, public meeting presentations, administration, taxes and insurance relating to the project. ASC manages the public art programs for the City of Charlotte.

BDSC Studio is a Brooklyn-based artist studio led by De St. Croix in consultation with designers, architects, and other creative collaborators focused on the intersection of public space and the environment. The studio has extensive experience creating socially engaging public spaces, as well as artworks that explore landscapes and the underlying environmental issues embedded in them. In combining these two lines of investigations, the studio aims to make public art that brings an added awareness and appreciation to our natural and urban environments.

“BDSC Studio is excited about this dynamic project, as many of the greatest musicians, icons and athletes have performed on the stages at Ovens Auditorium and Bojangles’ Coliseum over the last 63 years,” says artist Blane De St. Croix. “It is revealing this history through the memories and experiences of Charlotte’s residents that the public artwork will capture.”

The survey will be available for residents to respond to until Friday, Nov. 16, 2018. Work on the piece will begin this fall and the unveiling of the artwork installation will take place when the Bojangles’ Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium connector facility is complete in January 2020.

The Panthers Are Going All Black For The First Time In 5 Years

The Carolina Panthers will be wearing their legendary black-on-black jerseys this coming Sunday against the Buccs.

This will also be the first time we will break out their all-black jerseys in a regular season game since way back in 2013 when we lost the Divisional Playoff game to the San Francisco 49ers.

Since 2013, we have been exclusively wearing all-white uniforms in the playoffs, and it’s been working. Out of whole playoff history, we’ve won a total of nine times while wearing all white. By comparison, every time we wore our black home uniform or some alteration of it in the playoffs, we lost (2008 vs. the Arizona Cardinals, 2013 vs. the 49ers, and Super Bowl 50 vs. the Broncos).

What do you think about the Panthers decision to wear all black this Sunday?

0

Matt Parrott, Head Groundskeeper at the Charlotte Knights was just awarded “Sports Turf Manager of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) and Minor League Baseball (MiLB).

This year’s honorees continuously demonstrate the hard work and passion needed to provide attractive and safe playing fields at all levels. Three of the four honorees are repeat winners showing their endless dedication to the sports turf management industry. Award recipients will receive this top honor at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings during the Awards Luncheon on Monday, December 10, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Award winners include:

  • Triple-A – Matt Parrott, Charlotte Knights (Charlotte, N.C.)
  • Double-A – Brock Phipps, Springfield Cardinals (Springfield, Mo.)
  • Single-A – Stephen Watson, Down East Wood Ducks (Kinston, N.C.)
  • Short Season or Rookie – Ray Sayre, Gulf Coast Phillies (Clearwater, Fla.)

“The outstanding submissions for this year’s MiLB Sports Turf Manager of the Year awards demonstrates the value that STMA members bring to their organizations,” says Kim Heck, CAE, CEO of STMA. “We are proud to honor the talent and passion of our Minor League Baseball sports turf managers.”

Matt Parrott from the Charlotte Knights (International League) repeats as the Triple-A ‘Sports Turf Manager of the Year’ award winner after receiving the honor in 2017. He also won the award in the Double-A class in 2011 as a member of the Bowie Baysox. Parrott’s other accolades include winning the ‘Eastern League Diamond Pro Sports Field Manager of the Year’ (2011, 2014, and 2015).

Brock Phipps wins the Double-A ‘Sports Turf Manager of the Year’ award for the sixth time as a member of the Springfield Cardinals (Texas League). He previously won the award in 2008 and from 2013 through 2016.

Stephen Watson from the Down East Wood Ducks (Carolina League) wins the Single-A ‘Sports Turf Manager of the Year’ award for the first time. His team worked tirelessly to provide a premier playing surface for the future stars of the Texas Rangers.

Ray Sayre wins this year’s Short Season/Rookie ‘Sports Turf Manager of the Year’ award as a member of the Gulf Coast Phillies (Gulf Coast League). This year’s award joins his previous recognition as the 2017 Double AA ‘Sports Turf Manager of the Year’ award with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Southern League).

Since 2000, STMA and MiLB have honored members who manage fields in Triple-A, Double-A, Single-A and Short Season or Rookie divisions. Winners are selected via a 13-member awards committee, compiled by STMA. Each nominee is independently scored on cultural practices, game day routine, resource utilization, staff management and the groundskeeper’s involvement and support of the sports turf industry.

10 Worst Charlotte Restaurant Health Scores in October

0

Even though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standards slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.

These are the top 10 worst currently standing inspection scores in Mecklenburg County (some restaurants scored lower in October but were reinspected with higher scores before November 1st):
