On December 3, 1768, Charlotte was officially incorporated. “Charlotte-Towne” was named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, and to celebrate its 250th birthday, the city will host a celebration on Dec. 3 at the Square on Trade and Tryon as part of #CLT250’s “Charlotte Takes the Cake” Day. Did you know that Keep Charlotte Beautiful awards up to $5,000 for community beautification projects each year? This competitive Beautification Grant is open to neighborhoods, businesses, nonprofits, schools, and individuals citywide. Projects should focus on litter prevention, waste reduction and recycling, beautification, and/or community greening. Letters of intent must be submitted to kcb@charlottenc.gov by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. Housing & Neighborhood Services is now seeking proposals from qualified organizations to provide high-quality, out of school time enrichment programs to students in low-income families. Our Youth Programs team is looking for volunteers to help with the Charlotte Career Discovery Day, where 2,000+ high school students have the chance to explore different career paths through hands-on activities! It’s starting to get colder outside, and many of our neighbors can’t afford to fix the housing conditions that are an immediate health or safety threat in their homes. The City operates a Safe Home Emergency Repair Program that provides grants to low-income homeowners who are either elderly, disabled or have a custodial child under the age of six living there and face an immediate threat due to a home system failure. Conditions could include a heating system failure, plumbing repairs, electrical repairs, roof repairs, urgent accessibility, and others.
