3 Swimmers From Charlotte Are Now Headed To The Olympics

Ryan Locht's going to RioThree members of Charlotte’s SwimMAC Carolina’s Team Elite have just qualified for a trip to the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Kathleen Baker, Katie Meili and Ryan Lochte have officially earned spots on the U.S. Olympic swim team and are about to compete against the best in the world.

Baker couldn’t stop smiling in a poolside interview with NBC shortly after making the squad by finishing second in the 100 backstroke final. “I am literally shocked,” she said. “I’m about to cry. This is so amazing and I am so happy to be an Olympian. This is awesome!”

Baker, 19, originally moved to Charlotte at age 14 so she could swim for SwimMAC. She was home-schooled so that she could better coordinate her intense swimming schedule with her academic schedule with her swimming. Baker, a top recruit last year, just returned to the Queen City from her freshman year at Cal-Berkeley to continue her training with SwimMAC.

Another emerging swimmer is Katie Meili, 25, from Colleyville, Texas – she graduated from Columbia in 2013 and moved to Charlotte to become one of America’s best in the breaststroke.

Ryan Lochte will be in fighting for his 12th Olympic medal this August during the 2020 Summer Olympic games.

According to Doug Williams with Mcall, “betting on Olympic sports will soon be available to bettors in more states than Nevada, thanks to a Supreme Court decision that opens the door for states to allow sports betting.”

Because of the new decision, betting in states across the nation during next year’s 2020 Summer Olympics should beat the record of placed bets.

UNC Charlotte and CPCC Announce New Innovative Co-Admission Program

UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College have announced a new co-admission program to facilitate degree completion and student success by creating a seamless pathway for individuals who want to start their degree at Central Piedmont and complete their degree at UNC Charlotte.

This innovative co-admission program, called 49erNext, allows both Central Piedmont and UNC Charlotte to engage in a fully integrated proactive advising model, ensuring students’ progress toward the timely completion of a baccalaureate degree. As participants in the 49erNext program, students are eligible to transfer into more than 75 undergraduate degree programs (130+ majors) at UNC Charlotte, as long as they earn an associate degree at Central Piedmont with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA.

“UNC Charlotte admits the most transfer students of all universities in the UNC System so this partnership with Central Piedmont will ensure that we are meeting students’ academic, financial aid, and career planning needs while making the transfer experience more seamless,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois. “Nearly 60% of students in the inaugural 49erNext class are from underrepresented populations, and this program is designed to produce a greater number of workforce-ready, qualified graduates at a significant cost savings to them.”

In addition to proactive advising, students enrolled in the program will also have access to:

  • a coordinated set of support services in critical areas like career planning and financial aid;
  • free student privileges on UNC Charlotte’s campus including admission to select Charlotte 49ers athletic events, library access, and admission to campus events;
  • discounted CATS all-access light rail and bus pass;
  • discounted access to UNC Charlotte recreational facilities.

For fall 2019, 111 students are enrolled in the 49erNext program. This past year, about 4,000 transfer students enrolled at UNC Charlotte—69 percent came from a North Carolina community college and 29 percent of those came from Central Piedmont Community College.

“Central Piedmont is excited about the 49erNext program because it offers students a direct pathway to a four-year degree as well as an avenue to greater economic mobility,” said Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, Central Piedmont president. “Institutions the size of Central Piedmont and UNC Charlotte sometimes can be challenging to navigate for students. Those students in the 49erNext program will have a clearly marked map leading from one institution to the next. This program will serve the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community well as we seek to produce more individuals with bachelor’s degrees to meet our growing workforce demands.”

Both institutions have agreed to make collective institutional decisions and implement policies and processes that commit to:

  • Put students first — enable students to earn a quality degree in a timely manner;
  • Foster success — ensure and expect all students to achieve their full potential;
  • Ensure equity — ensure that all students, regardless of gender, race, income or family educational history, have equal opportunity.

Building on the partnership with Central Piedmont, UNC Charlotte hopes to expand 49erNext to other North Carolina community colleges.

Students interested in learning more about the 49erNext program should visit cpcc.edu/49erNext or email 49erNext@cpcc.edu.

N.C. Joining Worldwide Effort to Bring Awareness to Cybersecurity

0

North Carolina is joining other states, government agencies, businesses and individuals in a worldwide effort to encourage the public to stay safe online by protecting their online data and privacy.

Gov. Roy Cooper has proclaimed October National Cybersecurity Awareness Month to bring awareness to the impact cybersecurity threats and breaches have on the public and the state.

“Every North Carolinian must be vigilant against cyberattacks, but to do so they must be equipped with the awareness and education to maintain quality cybersecurity practices,” Gov. Cooper said. “I have proclaimed October National Cybersecurity Awareness Month to promote best practices in cybersecurity that will keep our state safe from these attacks.”

“No one is immune from a cyberattack,” said Eric Boyette, state chief information officer and secretary of the N.C. Department of Information Technology. “While the state is proactive in helping keep state data secure, cybersecurity protection is the responsibility of all North Carolina residents. Education and awareness are the best ways to help avoid becoming a victim.”

This year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month theme – “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” – focuses on personal accountability and proactive behavior by “being cybersmart.” It’s three tenets are:

  • Own IT. Take proactive steps to ensure the information you’re sharing online and giving out is secure. Be familiar with and routinely check privacy settings. Avoid the use of free or open Wi-Fi networks, which cybercriminals often exploit.
  • Secure IT. Create strong, unique passwords. Turn on multi-factor authentication, when possible. Know how to use the security features of the devices you use every day. Learn how to spot and avoid email scams.
  • Protect IT. Understanding how to keep your information safe will help protect you from cybercrime. Practice good “cyber hygiene” habits at home and at work. Update to the latest security software, web browsers and operating systems.

Follow the N.C. Department of Information Technology on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn for tips and best practices throughout the month, or visit https://www.staysafeonline.org.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month comes as state and local governments across the country, including North Carolina, have recently fallen victim to cyberattacks. Many of these attacks generally occur as a result of users falling for email scams, which have become more sophisticated.

“Cybersecurity is a top priority in North Carolina, not just in October but all year long,” said State Chief Risk Officer Maria Thompson, who leads NC DIT’s efforts to educate users, protect privacy and combat cyberattacks.

“Our data is under constant attack, and although we have many controls in place to protect data, we rely heavily on end-users to play their part and practice good cybersecurity habits,” she said. “We need everyone to understand that we are all cyber warriors and play a crucial role in the prevention of cyberattacks.”

So where to start?

Thompson urges everyone to begin by following these basic tips and then seek out additional information online at https://www.staysafeonline.org and https://www.stopthinkconnect.org:

  • Be suspicious of unsolicited emails. Whether it’s a request for donations or just information about the people in your family or agency, cybercriminals can use details you provide in elaborate scams.
  • Don’t hesitate to follow up. Even if you know and trust the sender, contact them by phone or in person if an email seems out of the ordinary or is a request for money or sensitive information.
  • Think before you click. Links and attachments in suspicious emails could compromise your online security and that of your company. If there’s any doubt, check with the sender first.
  • Pay attention to website URLs. Malicious websites can look identical to trusted sites, but the URL might use a different spelling or domain (e.g., .com vs. .net).
  • Protect your personal information. Avoid sending sensitive, personal identifiable information (e.g., Social Security numbers) or passwords in email – regardless of the recipient – unless encryption is used.

Charlotte Just Witnessed Its Hottest Day of The Year And Hottest October Day In History

0

This week’s crazy high temperatures got even crazier yesterday when the high reached an astounding 99 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, yesterday’s high temperature broke a 65-year-old record from way back in 1954.

They released the following record event report yesterday afternoon at 4:42pm;

A RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 99 DEGREES WAS SET AT CHARLOTTE-
DOUGLAS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE OLD RECORD OF
92 SET IN 1986. IT ALSO BREAKS THE OCTOBER MONTHLY RECORD OF 98 SET
BACK IN 1954.

Yesterday also marked this 2019’s 78th day with a high of at least 90 degrees, giving this year the 5th most 90+ days in the history of Charlotte. The record was set in 1954, a year which saw a total of 88 days with 90+ degrees.

We’ll see another blisteringly hot day today and temperatures still in the 90s tomorrow, with a cool-down coming this weekend (if it hits 90 today and tomorrow, we will have 80 total days in 2019 with 90+ temperatures, putting 2019 in 4th place for the most 90+ days);

via Weather Underground

A Code Orange Air Alert has also been issued for our region today due to the high ozone, humidity, and temperature.

The alert notes that “Active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.”

Today’s high temperatures, along with the low air quality increases everyone’s chance of heat exhaustion and heat stroke – make sure to stay hydrated at all times.

If you’re planning on spending an extended amount of time outside today, make sure you wear breathable clothes and consider getting a small fan, personal air conditioner, or evaporative cooling towel.

Stay safe out there!

How Do Different Blends of CBD Gummies Work?

0

There are plenty of reasons to love CBD gummies. But what does it mean for you when a CBD gummy formula has additional ingredients mixed in?

CBD gummies are a very specially crafted way of dosing CBD; it’s not just like taking a batch of gummy bears and coating them in CBD oil. Rather, CBD gummies offer very specific benefits and specific CBD doses that may help with a variety of problems.

Charlotte’s Web offers three separate CBD gummy mixes, all of which it has formulated specifically to help with a certain area of your life. By using the right mix, you can tackle the problem that you’re actually having, which is perfect if you’re looking for a targeted approach. If you have your eye on any of the Charlotte’s Web CBD gummies, here’s exactly what you need to know.

Recovery

Charlotte’s Web has formulated its Recovery gummies to help with exercise-induced inflammation. By taking these gummies, you can more effectively recover from your workouts, which can be a great way to benefit more from the way in which you work out. On top of the workout benefits associated with CBD, these gummies can push you even further.

You’ll find CBD, ginger, and turmeric in these Recovery gummies. Turmeric is a traditional spice that people have used throughout history to support healthy joints; ginger is a similarly natural spice that has a pleasant taste and supports healthy inflammatory mechanisms. These are very useful for anyone looking to boost their workouts.

Calm

CBD’s calming properties are among its most well-known properties, and Charlotte’s Web’s Calm gummies play off that property even more. These gummies utilize the portability of CBD gummies to the max. Whenever you need to take a deep breath and look at the bigger picture for a few minutes, you can use these gummies in the moment.

These gummies offer CBD, L-theanine, and lemon balm. Some studies have shown L-theanine’s promising ability to encourage relaxation without drowsiness, as it might be one of the most active compounds in both green and black tea. Lemon balm provides a gentle lemon aroma that may also provide a calming effect once you take the gummy. By taking just a few of these, you may feel more in control of yourself, making it easier to take on the world.

Sleep

If you’re looking to enhance the way you sleep, you should turn to the Charlotte’s Web Sleep gummy. With this gummy, you can support restful sleep and regular sleeping cycles, both things that can significantly enhance your day-to-day life. Just take your gummies around half an hour before you head to bed.

The Charlotte’s Web Sleep gummy pairs CBD with melatonin, one of the most well-known supplements for aiding in sleep length and quality. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the brain, but if your brain has a difficult time producing it, you might benefit substantially from this Sleep gummy. Take it after you’ve already turned out the lights for best results.

How to Use CBD Gummies

Each set of CBD gummies may impact you differently, but using them is fairly similar. Because CBD gummies come pre-portioned, you don’t have to worry about dosing or other concerns that many people have regarding CBD. The convenience of CBD gummies works great here because you don’t have to worry about your dosing aside from changing how many you take, which is generally a fairly simple process.

There’s really one main difference between these gummies: the timing of when you should use them. Recovery gummies work great either before or after a workout, and it’s a good idea to take them fairly close to your exercise routine. It’s a good idea to use Calm gummies when you know you’re going to need them, although you can also take them right when you start to feel anxious. Lastly, try to take the Sleep gummies around half an hour before you want to go to sleep.

Conclusion

When it comes to CBD gummies, there are plenty of options, and Charlotte’s Web provides three: Recovery, Calm, and Sleep. They’re all formulated slightly differently and all use CBD as their main ingredient, making them similar in many ways. If you’ve ever been interested in trying CBD gummies, Charlotte’s Web probably has a formula that will work for you.
