After Spending 17 Years Underground Billions of Cicadas Will Soon Swarm North Carolina

Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse, one of the largest broods of giant cicadas will soon emerge from the ground after a 17-year slumber.

According to Magicicada.org, the 17-year periodical cicada Brood IX will emerge in North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. It’s estimated that over 1 million creatures per acre will swarm our states beginning in late May and Early June (meaning Brood IX’s total numbers will likely reach several billion).

The flying insects spend most of their lives underground, in an immature “nymph” state, hibernating and slowly nibbling at plant roots with soil temperature and year synchronizing their transition to a ready-to-emerge mature cicada, ready to emerge, breed and lay eggs.

Once they hatch, they will flood the airwaves with a loud drone chirping sound that they use to find mates, after mating and laying their eggs, they will die withing a couple weeks.

Trump Threatens To Relocate Convention if Cooper Doesn’t Allow Full Attendance in Charlotte

President Trump has just released a series of tweets threatening Governor Cooper that if full attendance is not allowed at the Republican National Convention this coming August in Charlotte, he will relocate the massive event.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, it was estimated that the RNC would draw more than 50,000 people, gathering at 1,000+ scheduled events in hundreds of locations around our city.

Now, in the midst of the historic COVID-10 pandemic, leaders are questioning what changes might need to be made to keep attendees and our city safe, especially considering the North Carolina infections continue to spike (we saw our highest daily case count last Wednesday with 1,000 new cases, and again on Friday with an additional 1,600 new cases).

According to a recent New York Times article, RNC officials within the White House have been talking about possibly scaling back the 50,000 people who are expected to gather, possibly even limiting the attendance to delegates only.

This morning, Trump lashed out at the idea that his crowds might be reduced, tweeting a series of 4 tweets directed at North Carolina’s governor. He said RNC organizers “must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied. If not, we will be reluctantly forced to find…another Republican National Convention site.”

Last week, mayor Vi Lyles was interviewed by MSNBC’s Ali Velshi about the upcoming conference and if any changes will be made.

The mayor said:

“We have a contract with the RNC to host this convention, but we also have a commitment to our community that we will keep them safe and well, and that’s where we’re focused.

Our community thought that we’d be talking about protests and security and keeping people safe that way, and here we are fighting the unknown, COVID-19, and so we have to win that fight first.

We can’t go into this with just, ‘Well, we agreed to something in 2018 and we’re going to continue to do it,’ that is not the world today.”

With in-person learning threatened by COVID-19 and higher levels of education correlating with higher earnings, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2020’s Most & Least Educated Cities in America.

To determine where the most educated Americans are choosing to settle down, the site compared the 150 largest U.S. metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, across 11 key metrics. The data set ranges from the share of adults aged 25 and older with a bachelor’s degree or higher to the racial education gap to the quality of the public-school system.

2 cities in North Carolina book-ended the results, with Durham, NC ranking as the 4th most educated city in America, and Hickory, NC ranking as the 6th least educated city in America. Charlotte ranked among the top half, coming it at number 54 on the report:

NC Agriculture Officials Say 1.5 Million Chickens Will Be Euthanized Due To COVID-19 Spread

The COVID-19 pandemic is now wreaking havoc on one of the Carolina’s most iconic industries – chicken farming.

According to North Carolina Department of Agriculture officials, NC farmers have now being forced to euthanize over 1.5 million chickens.

Joe Reardon, NC’s Assistant Agriculture Commissioner reported to The News & Observer that at least 500,000 chickens have already been killed due to local outbreaks of COVID-19 at North Carolina poultry farms.

According to Readon, “Depopulation is the very last thing that any of these farmers would ever want to do, so it would be a last resort, but the continued lack of processing capacity over a long period of time with this ‘just in time’ process that we have on animal production, puts us in this very untenable situation.”

The ‘just in time’ process he mentioned is a standard practice across the US food chain, whereby farm produce and livestock is delivered on an extremely tight schedule between the farm, factory, packaging plant, distributor, and the retailer.

Over 2,000 workers in 26 processing plants throughout North Carolina have now tested positive for COVID-19. Some plants have now temporarily closed, but none have yet shut down.
