June is National Safety Month. With the U.S. devastated by the coronavirus pandemic this year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2020’s Safest States in America.

In order to determine the most secure states, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 53 key metrics. The data set ranges from the state’s coronavirus support to assaults per capita and the unemployment rate.

South Carolina Ranked among the 10 least safe states in America, and North Carolina came in around the middle at #26.

Several hundred protesters and concerned citizens gathered in Freedom Park in protest of George Floyd’s death.

Hundreds more took to the streets of Uptown Charlotte to speak out against racial injustice.

After a trifecta of hardships, one of Charlotte’s most famous bbq restaurants has just announced it will be closing for good.

Like most restaurants, Queen City Q struggled significantly after being required to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When unrest in Uptown Charlotte began last week, it added even more pressure to the struggling business, and finally, when the RNC pulled the plug on their $200 million conference in Charlotte, the small bbq joint decided they had no other option but to close.

They made the sad announcement last Friday on their Facebook page:

In a comment under the post they added:

“This is the email we received this morning. Out of a sense that maybe BOA knew something we did not know and they are our landlord and asked us to secure our Patio Furniture we acted based upon information at hand. —

We would like to ask all Retailers to please be mindful of protest activities in and around the Uptown area today, May 29th at 1:00 pm at Trade & Tryon. Bank of America is requesting for all Retailers to secure any & all exterior furniture in your respective patio areas, please take precautionary measures today and for the remainder of this week. We do not have any definitive information as of this time, but are asking all Retailers to be mindful of your exterior furniture, the property and the personal safety of you & your staff. Details on what possible impact, timing and special instructions are forthcoming from Bank of America and JLL; anticipate updates on this topic as the day & week proceeds.

North Carolina Just Recorded Its Highest Single Day Increase in COVID-19 Cases

Just 2 weeks after Governor Cooper initiated ‘phase 2’ of our state’s reopening plan, we are now witnessing the highest level of case increases since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Between 6/3 and 6/4, our state recorded a total of 1,189 new cases, bringing our total case count to 31,966. We currently have 659 people in the hospital because of the disease and we’ve already witnessed 960 COVID-19 related deaths.

Another alarming trend in the pandemic is the disproportionate number of African Americans who are contracting the virus. Despite making up 22% of our state’s population, African Americans currently account for 30% of confirmed COVID-19 cases and 34% of COVID-19 deaths.

Yesterday Governor Cooper signed executive order 143 to address disparities in communities of color that are being increasingly affected by COVID-19.

According to a press release from the governor’s office, the new order will do the following:

  • Establishes the Andrea Harris Social, Economic, Environmental, and Health Equity Task Force to focus on economic stability, health disparities, and environmental justice in North Carolina;
  • Tasks the North Carolina Pandemic Recovery Office to ensure the equitable distribution of pandemic relief funds;
  • Directs the Historically Underutilized Business Office to provide small historically underutilized businesses with access to opportunities, tools, and resources that promote equitable economic recovery and procurement of State contracts;
  • Directs the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to ensure all communities have access to COVID-19 testing and related health care;
  • Tasks the Office of Public Engagement to increase awareness about COVID-19, COVID-19 relief services and resources, and provide education on eliminating disparities;
  • Directs the Division of Emergency Management to continue coordinating efforts to protect the food supply chain and support feeding operations at food banks and school systems;
  • Directs the North Carolina National Guard to provide planning and logistical support and personnel where feasible to support mass testing of food processing plant workers in impacted communities and migrant farm workers; and
  • Tasks the Department of Environmental Quality to create a common discourse on environmental justice and coordinate with state executive agencies on the integration of environmental justice considerations into current and future policies, programs, and procedures.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Hosting Drive-In Movie Nights This Weekend

The Charlotte region’s biggest outdoor venue, Charlotte Motor Speedway, is about to hold a series of drive-in movie nights in partnership with the Charlotte Rescue Mission.

Staff from the Rescue Mission and from Charlotte Motor Speedway will practice social distancing and other health and safety restrictions during the events to ensure everyone remains as safe and healthy as possible.

Light snacks, beverages, and restrooms will be available at the events.

There are currently 2 movie nights scheduled, with ‘Despicable Me’ playing on June 6th and ‘Soul Surfer’ playing on June 7th.

The cost is $100 per vehicle, with $70 being tax-deductible.

Mayor and City Council Members Join 6th Night of Protests in Charlotte

For the 6th straight night, hundreds of protesters marched through Uptown Charlotte to speak out against systemic racial injustice and continued police brutality after the murder of George Floyd.

The march began at the Government Center immediately following a question and answer session by the mayor and members of the city council.

The session was sparked by a troubling incident from Tuesday night when CMPD officers appeared to trap a group of peaceful protesters between two streets and launching tear gas into the crowd. The incident was filmed live by alt-newspaper Queen City Nerve, and has since led to a full-scale investigation by the SBI the incident and of CMPD’s tactics.

Last night, when the Q&A session ended, the crowd repeatedly chanted, “Walk with us”, and soon, the mayor and several members of the city council joined the march.

Things got really emotional when the protesters stopped at an intersection to kneel in remembrance of George Floyd.

Mayor Lyles joined them in kneeling as Councilman Bokhari began to cry.

The protest continued into the night, with things remaining peaceful until about 12:30am when some bottles were thrown at police and police returned fire with flash bangs.

The protest fizzled out at around 2am.

Queen Charlotte Statue Ranked Among The Ugliest In The World

The site oddee.com has published an official list of what they believe to be the ugliest public statues in the world, and one of Charlotte’s most iconic statues made the list – the airport’s Queen Charlotte.

The site places our awkwardly positioned queen among 12 other truly strange and even disturbing sculptures that are currently on display in public locations, including;

The waving man statue in Burkina Faso;

A contemplative sheep in Canberra, Australia;

and the ‘boy riding a turtle’ Fountain statue on Worcester Common;

Our Queen Charlotte statue was originally commissioned in the 80s for $250,000 by a group known as the ‘Queen’s Table’.

“There have often been many assumptions made about why the sculpture is shaped the way it is. Some believe it is bent like a willow branch, appearing to be held aloft by the wind. Kaskey simply says that he made her “leaning backward in the wind because it seemed appropriate for an airport…and the column sets her as a stationary weather vane.” The emblem of the fountain and base is a compass rose, suggesting Charlotte is a crossroads.  Queen Charlotte is positioned atop a column, which is also a water fountain and stands in the middle of a water-filled base.  The base includes markings indicating North, South East & West. The crown in her hand is counter-balanced with the backwards motion as a welcome sign to the pedestrian.'”

Queen Charlotte was officially dedicated to the airport on September 18, 1990.

Due to the ongoing construction, the statue was relocated in January, 2013, to a spot between the Daily decks, north of the terminal. She’ll remain there until the terminal expansion project is complete.
