NC County Bans Protests In Front of Confederate Monument – Federal Judge Steps In

The First Amendment rights of a number of North Carolinians have recently come into question when Alamance County put a ban on protesting near a public confederate monument.

This past week, a federal judge for the Middle District of North Carolina ruled against the ban and in favor of the protesters.

“We hope that Alamance County and the Sheriff’s Office will heed the court’s warning and immediately end their ban on allowing protest on the courthouse grounds,” said Elizabeth Haddix, managing attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. “Since our hearing in court last week, they are prohibiting any access to protestors during business hours during the workweek, and after 8:30 pm, and during ‘daylight hours’ on the weekend. They are permitting limited access to two sides of the sidewalk on the north side of the Courthouse, with no access to the public sidewalk beside the monument ever. That’s not close to good enough in our view.”

On July 25, the Alamance NAACP’s President Barrett Brown and three other peaceful protestors of the confederate monument in Graham were arrested while standing on the sidewalk beside the monument and refusing to leave.

“We are encouraged by the court’s ruling today,” said Tamara Kersey, one of the plaintiffs, which demonstrates that our First Amendment rights should not be suppressed.” Kersey lives in Graham, is an Alamance NAACP member and Pastor of Johnson Chapel AME, Mebane, N.C.

The court’s text order issued today states that “In the absence of immediate implementation of reasonable restrictions or other material change of circumstances, and subject to further briefing, the Court will likely grant the motion for a preliminary injunction, as a long-term prohibition on protests on courthouse grounds traditionally used as a public forum violates the First Amendment.”

Charlotte Region Rocked By 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake – The Largest In Over 100 Years

The Charlotte region was just rocked in what is now being confirmed as the largest earthquake in over 100 years.

According to the USGS, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake just struck at 8:07 AM, located 3 KM southeast of Sparta, NC, and about 80 miles north of Charlotte. The Quake had a depth of 9.2 KM and an epicenter of 36.479°N 81.098°W.

The USGS’s ‘Shake Map’, which pulls data from hundreds of seismographs throughout our region, shows that the earthquake was detected far away as Washington, DC. The quake rippled North Carolina’s fault line so hard, the Charlotte region experienced what felt like a direct magnitude 4 quake.

The USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It’ map shows that people have now reported feeling the quake as far away as Alabama and Pennsylvania:

According to the Ditrianum organization, there’s a possibility of an even larger quake today or tomorrow;

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we saw a 4.4 magnitude quake hit Decatur, TN, and a couple months ago, a 2.6 magnitude quake rocked a small town just north of Charlotte.

According to USGS.gov, “The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

There have now been a total of 11 earthquakes that have rocked the Sparta, NC area over the past 48 hours, ranging in magnitude from 1.7 to 5.1.

Many believe that it’s the position of North Carolina, within the ‘Bible Belt’ of the USA which bears the most influence on gambling laws. And of course, the religious faiths in the State do not go hand in hand with gambling, as people lean more towards a moral and conservative existence.

In the ’70s, discussions arose to permit horse racing and pari-mutuel betting. There were even mutterings of a state lottery which could be allowed to raise vital funds for local charities. These discussions did not go away, and it was pressed that the State allow a casino to be built on Tribal lands, just like other States were allowing to happen at the time. Further pressure was put on the Constitution with regards to the lottery, though it took until 2006 for this to finally be permitted.

There are penalties to be had if anyone is found breaking the current gambling laws:

In 2020, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety states: 

‘It is illegal for any person or organization to operate a game of chance or to play or bet on any game of chance that involves winning money, property, or anything of value. Violators shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. GS 14-292’

Land-based Casinos

The only casino in which people can legally gamble is Harrah’s, which is situated on Cherokee Native Indian lands. This achieved state approval to open in 1997 where a limited number of games could be played. And it wasn’t until 2012 that the casino was permitted to offer table games, with live dealer games still being illegal even now. 

This casino operates under very strict guidelines though, and cannot be considered as an all-out gambling experience like players could have in Las Vegas for example. 

In March 2020, despite huge opposition, the go-ahead was given for a second casino to be built. And this will be situated in Kings Mountain, Charlotte. The casino will be a huge operation, and it’s estimated that costs will head into $200 million, with a proposed 3,000 new jobs being created. 

The casino is owned and operated by the Catawba Indian Nation, with its location being close to tribal lands that have been occupied by the Catawba since ancient times.

Online Casinos

This is a bit of a grey area and just like in other States, many assume that the existing laws of gambling cover online casinos. There isn’t anything in the current laws that forbid internet-based games. And many people in the USA do currently gamble online at a huge range of international casinos. Despite recent spikes in COVID-19, new unemployment claims decreased week-over-week on July 27, and were still 83% below the peak during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help add some context to these statistics, WalletHub just released updated rankings for the States Whose Weekly Unemployment Claims Are Recovering the Quickest.

To identify which states’ workforces are experiencing the quickest recovery from COVID-19, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three metrics based on changes in unemployment claims.

South Carolina has recovered the 8th fastest over the past week. North Carolina was ranked #38 over the past week, and both states have fared considerably worse over the course of the pandemic.
