via Facebook

Apparo, a Charlotte nonprofit aimed at helping other local nonprofit organizations leverage technology, is now accepting submissions for two technology awards: the TechExec Community Impact Award and the Mission Possible: The Economic Opportunity Award.

The TechExec Community Impact Award celebrates Charlotte technology leaders with a proven track record of donating their time, talents, and financial support to nonprofits in need. Apparo honors the award winner at their fall Community Impact Breakfast, awarding them $5,000 of pro bono support to gift to a nonprofit of their choice. 2019’s TechExec Award winner was Courtney Ramey, Market Executive Director at Jabian Consulting. For more information about the TechExec award, please visit https://www.apparo.org/impact/techexec-community-impact-award/.

“The TechExec Award is an opportunity for Apparo to celebrate a technology professional who is using their expertise and influence for good,” Kim Lanphear, Apparo’s Chief Executive Officer, says. “Although IT professionals are usually behind the scenes, this award puts them in the spotlight and acknowledges them for their efforts.”

Apparo’s Mission Possible: The Economic Opportunity Award, in partnership with Accenture, focuses on helping local nonprofits who want to use technology to increase economic mobility in Charlotte. One lucky nonprofit will be awarded $10,000 in cash and receive an additional $50,000 in free consulting.

After an initial survey and consulting session, Apparo’s pro bono consultants work with nonprofits to brainstorm how technology can solve their biggest challenges. They then assist the nonprofits in building a proposal for a tech-based solution that can maximize the organization’s work. The Ada Jenkins Center, a community center located in Davidson, was the 2019 Mission Possible Award winner. Nonprofits can visit https://www.apparo.org/nonprofits/mission-possible/ to complete the survey and learn more about the award process.

“As we continue to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, being able to leverage technology has become more important to nonprofit organizations than ever before,” Lanphear explains. “The impact of this award can be seen throughout our community, in the ways previous winners are coming out stronger than ever through the crisis.”

Apparo is accepting nominations for the TechExec Community Impact Award until Tuesday, August 11. Eligible nonprofits interested in participating in the Mission Possible Award must complete a survey and schedule an initial consulting session by Friday, October 9.

Second North Carolina County Approves Reparations For Black Citizens

0

A second North Carolina county has just passed a new resolution to provide reparations for black residents.

Yesterday, Buncombe County officials passed RESOLUTION NO. 20-08-03, which focuses on county efforts to prioritize and eliminate racial equity, including education gaps as well as disparities in the health care and justice systems.

The county now joins Asheville in passing a similar reparations resolution.

Last month, the Asheville City Council voted unanimously 7-0 to pass the “RESOLUTION SUPPORTING COMMUNITY REPARATIONS FOR BLACK ASHEVILLE“, which apologizes for the city’s historic role in slavery and discrimination and orders the establishment of a process and commission for “repairing the damage caused by public and private systemic Racism”.

According to the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, ‘reparations’ are “a process of repairing, healing and restoring a people injured because of their group identity and in violation of their fundamental human rights by governments, corporations, institutions and families”.

In an interview with Ashville Today, Racial Justice Coalition of Ashville’s Community Liaison Rob Thomas (who led the push for the new resolution) noted;

“Black people are deeply impoverished and over policed here, and the lack of economic mobility can be traced back to this city’s negligence and intentional disposal of black wealth. It seems that the most responsible move at this point is to reallocate a lot of the $30 million dollars and directly re-invest it into black neighborhoods. We do not want programs, we aren’t looking for white saviorism; we want land, property, businesses. We want economic mobility and a way to produce generational wealth.”

What do you think about the new reparations measures?

Cannabis Oil for Dogs: Everything You Need to Know

0

Cannabis oil has become one of the latest things to sweep the world in the last decade or so. People have begun using it for all sorts of purposes, from treating specific conditions to helping to improve their general wellbeing.

However, one thing that many people are only now getting to grips with is using CBD oil for dogs and its several benefits for dogs. The idea of giving your favorite furry friend CBD oil likely seems pretty confusing for most people – after all, couldn’t it be dangerous?

Here is a brief guide on everything you need to know about giving cannabis oil to your dog.

Is CBD Oil for Dogs Safe?

The first question that every single pet owner should be asking is whether or not giving CBD oil to their pets is safe. While you can find in-depth information on sites like WayofLeaf, the brief answer is that yes, CBD oil is safe for dogs.

CBD oil works through its interactions with the endocannabinoid system, which is a system not only found in humans. It is actually found in all mammals, including your dog. This means that CBD oil works just as effectively for your dog as it does for you. There is thus no real risk when giving CBD oil to your four-legged friend.

In fact, CBD oil can be incredibly beneficial for your pooch, helping them to deal with all manner of different conditions.

So, what are these conditions? How could CBD oil help your dog?

What Kinds of Conditions Can CBD Oil Help to Treat in Your Dog?

Arthritis

While most people that don’t own dogs assume it is a literal walk in the park, caring for a dog will inevitably lead to some kind of health issue coming up. These health conditions include all kinds of things, with various complications to a dog’s living standard sometimes resulting in some difficult choices for the owner.

However, conditions like arthritis can be treated early with CBD oil. CBD oil is well-known for its effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory, making it incredibly easy to use as a treatment for arthritis. Various studies, such as this one by Hammell et al. for the European Journal of Pain, have confirmed that CBD oil can help treat arthritis thanks to its interaction with the CB2 receptors within the ECS.

Arthritis affects dogs, especially breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers, as they start to get older. So if your dog is struggling with getting out of bed in the morning, you might want to consider giving them CBD oil.

Pain

In the same way that arthritis affects all dogs if they reach an older age, pain is another thing that dogs have to suffer with. Whether stemming from arthritis or a different chronic condition, dogs suffering pain without recourse is a terrible thing, especially for the owners.

CBD oil is an effective pain reliever thanks to its interaction with the endocannabinoid system. It works with the CB1 receptor, diminishing pain and helping to relieve the pressure of having that constant pain.

This is especially significant for dogs because a dog cannot properly articulate that it is suffering pain, other than acting slightly dejected.

What Do You Need to Watch out for When Giving Your Dog CBD Oil?

CBD oil is completely safe for dogs and is incredibly beneficial as well, but that does not mean that there aren’t a few things you need to consider.

Dogs are mammals, exactly like us, but they have one key difference that makes dosage specifications a bit different – their weight. Dogs weigh a lot less than us, as well as having a higher rate of metabolism.

All this means that it takes a lot less CBD to have the same effect in their bodies as it does in ours. You want to make sure you don’t waste your CBD oil when you give it to them, as they only need a little bit.

You should also pay attention to the THC concentration of the CBD oil – if there is any. Many CBD oils, especially full-spectrum ones, will contain a very tiny amount of THC as an impurity. While it is harmless and legal for us to consume, there is a risk that your dog might not react well to it.

To be safe, make sure only to buy CBD isolate for your dog, so that every last drop of THC has been completely removed.

What Is CBD Isolate and What Is It Used for?

0

When shopping for CBD products, there are a few key terms that you are likely to come across, no matter which brands or types of CBD you choose. Two of these terms include full-spectrum CBD and CBD isolate, referring to CBD’s type within any given product.

Many people do not fully understand the precise differences between CBD Isolate and full-spectrum CBD, merely choosing the most appealing products. While both types of CBD are absolutely beautiful and will provide your body with a healthy dose of CBD, the two are actually very different. They will determine the effects that you experience.

So, what exactly is CBD isolate – and is it the right option for you?

What Is CBD Isolate?

CBD isolate refers to pure CBD that has undergone an intensive process to remove all other compounds. CBD is one of the many compounds found within both hemp and cannabis plants. Many brands opt to source their CBD from hemp plants as it provides much lower base levels of THC, making it easier to ensure products don’t have any unwanted psychoactive effects.

Both hemp and cannabis plants contain hundreds of different cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. In order to create CBD isolate, a number of intense filtration methods are used to remove all of the cannabinoids, other than CBD, along with all of the other compounds within the plant. The result is pure CBD.

CBD isolate is an excellent way to provide your body with pure CBD, giving you complete control over the cannabinoids that you put into your body and the effects felt. CBD isolate can also be used to create your own CBD items by combining your favorite terpenes with CBD slate powder.

How Does CBD Isolate Compare to Full-Spectrum CBD?

CBD isolate is just one of three different types of CBD. Full-spectrum CBD is the other most commonly found form of CBD, while broad-spectrum offers a mid-ground between the two.

Full-spectrum is considered the complete opposite of CBD isolate, with all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids found within hemp plants retained. Many people believe that full-spectrum CBD provides much more powerful effects as the different cannabinoids work together to trigger the entourage effect.

In sum, CBD isolate contains just the one cannabinoid, CBD, while full-spectrum CBD is packed with hundreds of different cannabinoids alongside CBD.

So, is CBD isolate better than the other options?

Pros and Cons of CBD Isolate

Pros:

  • With CBD isolate, you know exactly what you are putting into your body, giving you much more control.
  • CBD isolate can be used to create your own CBD products, giving you the ability to get creative and try out different terpene and CBD combinations.
  • CBD isolate’s effects are slightly more predictable as no other cannabinoids are reacting with your body.

Cons:

  • CBD on its own cannot trigger the entourage effect, meaning that it may not work to its full potential.
  • In order to create CBD isolate, more intensive filtration methods are required, and products can, therefore, be more expensive.
  • CBD isolate lacks the natural herbal flavor that is often found in full-spectrum CBD because all the terpenes from the plant have been removed.

Where to Find CBD Isolate Products

An increasing number of brands are offering CBD isolate products in order to provide their customers with as much choice as possible. An excellent brand for quality CBD isolate is Provacan.

Provacan is known for using straightforward, all-natural formulas to create its products, resulting in a pure CBD experience without any added chemicals and flavorings that are often found with other brands.

When shopping with Provacan, there are two different concentrations of CBD isolate to choose from; their 1000mg and much more powerful 5000mg CBD pots. Provacan uses third-party lab testing to check the photochemical content of their CBD isolate products to ensure that they are 100% pure and free from THC.

Provacan’s CBD isolates are the perfect solution for anyone who wants CBD’s power without having to worry about the other compounds that they are unknowingly putting into their body.

Final Thoughts on CBD Isolate

Whether CBD isolate is the best CBD option remains an ongoing debate among serious CBD users, industry experts, and casual consumers. Which choice is the right one for you will depend on what you hope to gain from consuming CBD and how you prefer to do so.

CBD isolate best for those who like to mix their terpene and CBD blends, creating their very own unique items. Equally, CBD can be a handy tool for those who require a super-concentrated CBD dose every day to manage specific health concerns.

Governor Cooper Announces NC Will Remain In Phase 2 For 5 More Weeks

0

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has just announced that our state will remain in Phase 2 of the shutdown for at least another 5 weeks amid a continued COVID-19 Pandemic.

“Other states that lifted restrictions quickly have had to go backward as their hospital capacity ran dangerously low and their cases jumped higher. We will not make that mistake in North Carolina,” said Governor Cooper. “In keeping with our dimmer switch approach with schools opening, and in order to push for decreasing numbers which will keep people healthier and boost our economy, North Carolina will remain paused in Safer At Home Phase 2 for 5 weeks.”

You can watch the entire press briefing here:

Although cases and deaths have been on the decline in our state, hospitalizations have continued to climb.

Governor Cooper Set To Make Announcement on Phase 3 Reopening This Afternoon

0

NC Governor Roy Cooper is now set to make an announcement about whether we will remain in Phase 2 or if we will transition to Phase 3 this coming Friday.

A move to Phase 3 would allow for higher capacity of restaurants, houses of worship, and reopen gyms and bars across our state.

Last month, the governor extended Phase 2 through August 7th and added a new requirement that all NC residents wear face masks when in public.

The decision to extend Phase 2 was made amid rising COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Many are now expecting Cooper to announce a move to Phase 3 now that cases and deaths have been on the decline in our state (although hospitalizations have continued to climb).

Phase 3 specifically includes the following changes:

  • Lessen restrictions for vulnerable populations with encouragement to continue practicing physical distancing and minimizing exposure to settings where distancing isn’t possible
  • Allow increased capacity at restaurants, bars, other businesses, houses of worships, and entertainment venues
  • Further increase the number of people allowed at gatherings
  • Continue rigorous restrictions on nursing homes and other congregant care settings

Do you think we should move to Phase 3?

UNC Charlotte’s Niner University Elementary Readies to Open

0

As teachers across the region prepare for a different sort of school year, faculty and staff at Charlotte’s newest school are in the building at Niner University Elementary at Amay James (NUE), readying for its opening on Aug. 17.

Niner University Elementary.jpgStaffed and operated by UNC Charlotte, NUE is the sixth school across the state to emerge in response to the North Carolina General Assembly’s UNC Laboratory School Initiative, a program created to provide enhanced educational programming to students in low-performing schools.

The school’s curriculum and approach to education were developed through the collective work of dozens of UNC Charlotte faculty and staff from across campus. NUE will strive to create lifelong learners and responsible, caring citizens through an authentic and meaningful curriculum that includes a focus on early literacy. The school currently has 96 K-2 students enrolled, and is continuing to accept applications for limited spots. NUE will add an additional grade level each year through 2024.

In the face of challenges posed by opening an elementary school in the midst of the uncertainties created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Principal Pamela Broome is responding with flexibility and optimism.

“Opening NUE has been a labor of love, years in the making. While we know we’ll need to be flexible during the coming year, we’re thrilled to welcome our students and families and begin our journey as part of this community,” Broome said.

“NUE is going to be a special place for everyone. We are approaching school differently,” added kindergarten teacher Jaalil Hart.

This fall, NUE will open to fully remote learning for students. All students will receive a remote learning toolkit that will include developmentally appropriate tools that align with the curriculum.

Interns from the UNC Charlotte school counseling program will provide telemental health services to support students throughout the year. NUE has hired a social worker and UNC Charlotte social work intern as well as a school guidance counselor to support students and families. Students eligible for nutrition services will receive meals delivered by bus through Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).

NUE will ultimately provide UNC Charlotte’s Cato College of Education the opportunity to train teachers, counselors and school leaders. Teacher preparation and development at NUE will be centered on embedded, multi-semester clinicals for teachers in training.

“Niner University Elementary stands as the latest example of the inextricable link between UNC Charlotte and the community we call home,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “The longstanding mutual exchange of knowledge, talent and energy is a source of pride and strength for the University. NUE also represents an important next step in a concerted effort by the Cato College of Education to deliver a unique teacher preparation program that produces graduates who are ready to thrive in the classroom on day one.”

Phillip Byers, chair of the UNC Board of Governors lab school subcommittee, was among a small group of visitors who joined Chancellor Gaber to greet NUE teachers and tour the school on Tuesday morning.

“This school fulfills a commitment to provide a real laboratory of teaching excellence, research and innovation so that every child receives a quality education. It took visionary legislative action, hard work and collaboration to get us to today and the results will show it was worth it,” he said.

With class starting in less than two weeks, for NUE teachers like Jaalil Hart, the current environment doesn’t diminish the excitement.

“I can’t wait. Seeing students for the first day is one of the best feelings ever for teachers!”

The UNC Charlotte Young Alumni Chapter is hosting a school supply drive to benefit Niner University Elementary and local Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools through August 15. High priority items needed include composition notebooks, dry erase markers, small whiteboard erasers, pencils, 8-pack crayons and uniforms. Items can be dropped off at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen or shipped to 8688 Johnson Alumni Way, Charlotte, NC 28262.

The advantages of using electronic document management systems

0

The efficiency of business operations depends on two main factors – streamlining the business processes and proper document management system. The latter plays an important role behind the scenes. The speed of operations depends on the right backend support of the staff and a suitable document management system that accelerates the document retrieval process by ensuring that the correct documents are available at the right time.

Having the proper Record Storage Systems provide secure and safe storage of documents, both physical and electronic, that always remains protected and accessible when someone needs it.  One of the advantages of implementing document management systems is that it stores the document offsite. That saves office space and facilitates document retention in a protected environment that leads to efficient document archival.

More and more organizations are adopting electronic document management systems that serve as a centralized repository of all documents. To know how they benefit from it, keep reading this article.

More flexibility in accessing documents

With advancements in technology, the workplace has changed considerably as it does not require any more for the entire staff to work from office only. Instead, many employees like the field staff and those who work from home stay away from the office most of the time but still need to access documents from remote locations. That is where the document management system that maintains records in digital format comes into play. Anyone who has the authorization can access documents round the clock from the digital document archive and maintain flexibility in working without affecting the efficiency, you can click here to learn more about this document signing service.

Safe file preservation and document security

Most electronic document management systems are cloud-based to facilitate easy access without fearing any downtime. It ensures complete protection to all files and other documents by protecting it from damage or loss due to accidental deletion, corruption, natural calamities, and computer crashes. All documents are highly secure and safe because there is no fear of any physical destruction or data loss due to the highly secured cloud environment that has a robust data backup system in place.

Document security is also remarkably high because the offsite digital storage is out of the reach of cyber rogues who target businesses to steal data. Since the cloud storage maintains strict data confidentiality, cyber attackers can’t know which businesses use which type of data storage system that prevents them from trying to access data unlawfully.

Cost-saving

Storing your data off-location ensures high data security without compromising the ease of document accessibility to authorized persons. Still, it does away with blocking ample office space for document storage and saves costs. Moreover, the easy availability of indexed documents maintained in a highly organized manner speeds up work that enhances efficiency and boosts productivity. It eliminates the manpower necessary to hunt for documents in physical locations and saves some more cost.

With no chances of document misplacement or getting lost, going paperless companies can save so much cost that they do not mind spending on document management systems.
