York County Arts Council Announces Thousands in Grant Awards
The Arts Council of York County is pleased to announce the allocation of Small Grant awards for the second quarter of the 2020 – 2021 fiscal year. Small Grants are available to individual artists, non-profit organizations, teachers and schools throughout York County. These grants are designed to support specific arts activities that promote the individual artist’s professional development or career advancement and/or to support a wide variety of quality arts projects and programs that promote excellence in arts disciplines and make such disciplines accessible for general community-wide audiences.
Organizations and individual artists residing in York County, SC may request up to $1,000 per grant and may receive up to two grants each calendar year. The Arts Council awarded Small Grants to five artists and organizations for the 2nd Quarter of the 2020 – 2021 fiscal year. Recipients include:
ChristmasVille Rock Hill | $1,000
Window Displays and Themed Alleys
ChristmasVille Rock Hill is an annual festival which combines holiday celebration, recognition of local artist Vernon Grant’s iconic art, and promotion of Old Town Rock Hill’s merchants, restaurants, and historic architecture. Normally a four-day event held during the first week of December, the 2020 festival is transitioning to become a partially virtual festival that takes place from November 25 and runs through the end of December.
Cheerful downtown window displays featuring Vernon Grant’s Santas and Gnomes, and scenes of Christmas are created by designers and businesses in many of the establishments lining East Main Street are a mainstay of ChristmasVille in Rock Hill, SC. The 2020 Festival is expanding the concept of the festive windows to include up to six alleys throughout Old Town Rock Hill. The alley project will pair decorators with artists to design and decorate the spaces, creating a walking tour and winter wonderland for visitors to the area. Concerts at the Courtroom has brought live performances, including local, regional and international acts ranging from performance art to acoustic folk rock to aggressive metal to the Gettys Art Center in Old Town Rock Hill, SC since 2012. Known regionally for creating and sustaining an edgy and innovative music and performing arts scene that supports local performers as well as touring acts, Concerts at the Courtroom seeks to provide a platform for local musicians and entertainment professionals to showcase their work in a time when live performances have been suspended. Soprano Ukuleles
Fort Mill Middle School’s Chorus program serves 150 – 200 students in grades 6 – 8 each year. Currently, the curriculum for this course includes units of study in music theory, music history, the science of music – how music connects to other art forms, and performance – vocal and instrumental. For the 2020 – 2021 school year, the program is adding the study of ukuleles to its curriculum. Adding ukuleles to the classroom provides an additional resource, allowing students to broaden their musical experience and study. Ukuleles are an affordable instrument. Students who connect with the instrument could extend their studies beyond the classroom by purchasing their own for private instruction. Airing Out the “Dirty” Laundry
Winthrop University Galleries has partnered with the Women’s Art Initiative and the Arts Council of York County to engage and participate in Airing Out the “Dirty” Laundry, an ongoing community art movement. The movement responds to the silencing of women, creating opportunities for all women to share experiences through visual storytelling. Artist, activist, community arts organizer, and founder Andrea Downs will install a small selection of the more than 400 pieces that are part of a growing collection of women’s stories. Artwork created during Laundry Day Workshops is collected and joined together on clotheslines and will be featured in the lobby at the DiGiorgio Campus Center at Winthrop University, and in the Perimeter Gallery at the Center for the Arts. The installation will include information about how the public can get involved in this movement. Winter Reading Program
York County Library is hosting their third Winter Reading Program this December. The 2020 program will be like no other! Patrons will be able to pick up all materials through curbside pickups at York County Library locations, and all programming will be offered virtually by staff and paid professional artists. Following in the footsteps of their highly successful Summer Reading Program, the Winter Reading Program will include virtual story times featuring the stars of ChristmasVille’s productions and other professional storytellers. The YCL will also offer a Christmas virtual performance by Porkchop Productions during the annual ChristmasVille Elves in the Shelves (virtual) event. President Donald Trump issued a drilling ban for Florida and has recently extended it to North Carolina. The state has been included in a 10-year ban offshore drilling ban, which was originally extended by the president from Florida. This was announced by Thom Tillis, a US senator, on Monday in a press release. Environmentalists who had long criticized Trump for not including North Carolina in his July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2032, executive order to restrict offshore drilling welcomed the news with excitement. 

Erin Carey, who is the head of offshore programs in the North Carolina Sierra Club said that it is incredible news if the Senator persuaded the president, In the event that the facts confirm that Sen. On Monday morning in a video, Tillis said that he addressed Trump about extending the ban to North Carolina. And that he is satisfied to report that the President will do precisely that. He also stressed on how important tourism and the coastal communities are to the state and is grateful to Trump for the regulations. On Monday, the White House declined to make comments about this to The News and Observer. 

This may be a serious issue for North Carolina as the oil industry is one of the, if not the most profitable in the country. Many employers like to weigh their investment opportunities based on the economy of the state rather than the whole country. This loss of “prosperity” so to say is going to impact how many large companies will be willing to move to NC in the future. We’ve seen many cases of NC may be losing a financial company’s investment in the past, taking the majority of those localized jobs with it to another state. Earlier this month on a trip to, he disclosed the 10-year ban for Florida, Georgia Coasts, and South Carolina. North Carolina and Virginia authorities doubted if he made the decision of choosing these three states for biased reasons. 

The declaration by the senator was very timely and helpful, said Carey, given the fact that the Republican first-term congressperson is in a tight race for re-appointment, head-on with Democrat Cal Cunningham. 

Some Local Leaders Oppose Drilling

Many local leaders are opposed to the seaward drilling and seismic testing, including the Democratic Governor Roy Cooper. Over 44 districts in North Carolina are opposed to seismic testing, seaward drilling, or both, as reported by The News and Observer. A majority of coastal localities, some of whom have Republican congressmen, have restricted offshore drilling for quite a long time, to avoid the sight of oil drills or oil spills from harming the tourism industry which is one of the main businesses that the state depends on. North Carolina’s Economic Forecast: A Comeback in 2021

The new year could bring a resurgence for North Carolina’s economy, which took a historic hit this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to John Connaughton, director of the Barings/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast.

Economic Forecast_May 2020.jpg“While 2021 represents the first full year of the economic comeback from the COVID-19 recession, it is likely to take until early 2022 before GDP (Gross Domestic Product) reaches the 2019 quarter four high point,” said Connaughton, Barings Professor of Financial Economics at the Belk College of Business. “Unfortunately, the unemployment rate will take another six to nine months before it again approaches 4.0%.”

Connaughton – presenting his quarterly Barings/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast on Wednesday, Sept. 23 – said 13 of 15 economic sectors in North Carolina are forecast to experience output decreases in 2020.

Hospitality and Leisure Services will see the largest decline, a projected real decrease of 32.8%, followed by:

  • Other Services: 7.4% decrease
  • Educational and Health Services: 5.9% decrease
  • Wholesale Trade: 4.7% decrease

Looking ahead to 2021, Connaughton forecasts an output increase for all 15 of the state’s economic sectors. According to the report, these sectors will see the largest real increase in 2011:

  • Hospitality and Leisure Services: 11.5%
  • Other Services: 9.7%
  • Agriculture: 6.6%
  • Educational and Health Services: 5.9%

Gross State Product 
After decreasing 25.8% in the second quarter, the Gross State Product (GSP) is expected to rebound during the third quarter, Connaughton said. In the fourth quarter of 2020, GSP is expected to increase by an annualized real rate of 6.6%.

Looking ahead to 2021:

  • GSP is forecast to reach $595,833.0 million, a real (inflation adjusted) increase of 3.6% over the 2020 level.
  • The quarterly GSP is expected to increase each quarter of 2021, starting with a 5.9% annualized real rate increase in the first quarter.

Employment
Since April, the U.S. and North Carolina unemployment rates have fallen dramatically. The North Carolina rate, at 8.6% in July, is expected to decline through the rest of the year to 7.1% in December, Connaughton said.

For the year, Connaughton expects the state will lose 219,600 net jobs, and 12 of the state’s 14 nonagricultural sectors of the economy are expected to experience employment decreases. The sectors with the largest expected employment decreases are:

  • Hospitality and leisure services: 16.8% decrease
  • Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities: 7.3% decrease
  • Retail Trade: 7.0% decrease

Looking ahead to 2021: 

  • North Carolina’s unemployment rate is expected to decline to 5.4% by December 2021, still higher than the pre-COVID rate of 3.6%.
  • Seasonally adjusted nonagricultural employment is expected to reach 4,610,800, an increase of 5.4% over December 2020.
  • The state is expected to add 236,500 net jobs for the year.
  • Thirteen of the state’s 14 nonagricultural sectors of the economy are expected to see employment increases, with Hospitality and Leisure Services (15.9%) and Information (16.0%) seeing the largest increases.

COVID-19 Recession 
The COVID-19 shutdown ended a North Carolina economic expansion that began in 2010.

Connaughton, who has served as forecast director since 1981, said the 2020 recession, caused by the mandated shutdown of many sectors of the economy, is markedly different from recent recessions.

“The COVID-19 recession resulted in a more severe downturn than what we experienced during the Great Recession in 2008,” he said. “In most recessions, the cause comes from an imbalance in one or more sectors of the economy.”

The 2020 Toyota Series Eastern Division will wrap up their season with a tournament next week in Huntersville, North Carolina, Oct. 1-3, with the Toyota Series at Lake Norman. Hosted by Visit Lake Norman, Charlotte & Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, the three-day tournament will feature the region’s best bass-fishing pros and co-anglers casting for a top prize of up to $65,000, plus a $35,000 bonus if the winner is a qualified Phoenix Boat owner.

“Everyone is going to catch a lot of fish and this is going to be a good tournament,” said Bass Pro Tour angler Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, who has five top-10 finishes – two wins – on Lake Norman in FLW competition. “I was looking at the long-range forecast, and it’s supposed to cool off considerably. Like down into the 40s at night. That’s going to get them moving and make the shallow bite turn on real good.

“That’s what makes Norman such a fun tournament lake, though, is guys can catch them on pretty much anything that they want to throw,” Thrift continued. “Shallow topwater is going to be strong – buzzbaits, walking baits – I’m going to have a Damiki Rambler tied on, and I’m sure that we’ll see lots of Whopper Ploppers – but plenty of guys will be catching them out deep with drop-shot rigs, as well. We’re going to have to run everything, and fish different stuff every day.”

When asked for a weight prediction, Thrift mentioned that the winning weight will be largely determined by the weather.

“I think if you can catch 12½ to 14 pounds a day, you’ll be right there at the end,” Thrift went on to say. “I think the winner will have something like 37 to 40 pounds. If you catch that and don’t win, you didn’t do anything wrong. You just got beat.”

Anglers will take off daily at 7 a.m. EDT from the Blythe Landing Park at 15901 N.C. Highway 73 in Huntersville. Weigh-ins will also be held at the park and will begin at 3 p.m. Attendance is limited to competing anglers and essential staff only. Fans are encouraged to follow the event online through the “FLW Live” weigh-in broadcasts and daily coverage at FLWFishing.com.

In regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event, scaling up for every 20 boats over 160 and scaling down for every boat below 160. According to the FBI’s latest US Crime Report, Myrtle Beach, SC is now officially the 3rd most dangerous city in the United States. To rank the most dangerous cities, we analyzed the data from cities with a population of 10,000 or more and evaluated the number of reported Violent Crimes (murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and forcible rape) and reported Property Crimes (burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and larceny-theft). According to the FBI’s data, these were the top 5 most dangerous cities last year:

  1. Emeryville, California
  2. Tukwila, Washington
  3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
  4. Lumberton, North Carolina
  5. Branson, Missouri

In addition to Myrtle Beach ranking third, Lumberton, North Carolina, just outside of Fayetteville was ranked just after Myrtle Beach on the list at #4 in the US.

North Myrtle Beach, SC, (considered a different city from Myrtle Beach) also came in the top 30 as the 23rd most dangerous city.
