NCDHHS Launches 2 New Tools To Help North Carolinians Know When/Where To Get Vaccinated

0

North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has just launched 2 new tools to help North Carolina residents find out if they are currently eligible to receive a vaccine and if so, where they can get one.

The new ‘Find My Vaccine Group‘ determines what group you are in according to your age, job, and overall health conditions, and allows people to sign up for an automatic notification for when the state opens up vaccinations to their specific group.

They also recently launched the ‘Find a Vaccine Location‘ tool, which allows North Carolinians to enter their ZIP code to find the closest vaccine location and sign up for a slot to get their shot.

“We want North Carolinians to be able to get answers to their questions – whether that is about the vaccines and how they work, when they are eligible to take their shot, or where their spot is to get a vaccine. They can call our hotline or go to YourSpotYourShot.nc.gov and get honest information,” said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D.

Currently, North Carolina is vaccinating groups 1 and 2. Until the vaccines become more available and more groups get vaccinated, the CDC is recommending that everyone continue wearing a mask, waiting at least six feet apart, and washing their hands often.

Charlotte Shoppers Join In On #BoycottPublix Trend

0

Publix is now in hot water after news got out that Julie Jenkins Fancelli, heiress to the $15.2 billion Publix chain, funded the biggest portion of Trump’s rally on January 6th that ended in the deadly attack on our US Capitol, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Soon after the news broke, #BoycottPublix began trending across Twitter.

Charlotte residents were quick to join the trend and publically declare that they will no longer shop at the chain.

Here are just a few of the tweets from Charlotte residents:

Publix was quick to issue a public statement attempting to distance itself from the actions of its owners, saying:

“Mrs. Fancelli is not an employee of Publix Super Markets, and is neither involved in our business operations, nor does she represent the company in any way. We cannot comment on Mrs. Fancelli’s actions.

The violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was a national tragedy. The deplorable actions that occurred that day do not represent the values, work or opinions of Publix Super Markets.”

but many in Charlotte still weren’t having it;

While Fancelli is not a direct employee of Publix, she is still significantly affected by their success or decline, as her family currently owns 20% of the company, which now has a market cap of $15.2 billion.

What do you think about the situation?

2.4 Magnitude Earthquake Just Struck North Carolina

0

Last night at 11:03pm, a 2.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Northern North Carolina about a mile south of Sparta.

The quake is being considered an aftershock from the largest North Carolina earthquake in over 100 years that continues to rattle the same region last August.

The USGS’s ‘Did You Feel It’ map showed that people reported feeling the quake as far away as Alabama and Pennsylvania:

Because August 9th’s quake was so large, it’s aftershocks will likely continue for some time, and could even trigger other quakes around our state.

According to the USGA, “Aftershocks can continue over a period of weeks, months, or years. In general, the larger the mainshock, the larger and more numerous the aftershocks, and the longer they will continue.”

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we saw a 4.4 magnitude quake hit Decatur, TN, and a couple of months ago, a 2.6 magnitude quake rocked a small town just north of Charlotte.

North Carolina’s Juniper Level Botanic Garden to Open 8 Weekends in 2021

0

Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a $7.5 million gift to North Carolina State University, will open eight weekends during 2021 for public viewing, plant purchases, and free advice from the experts. There is no admission fee.

“Two open garden weekends are scheduled each season,” said founder and benefactor Tony Avent. “Winter has turned out to be the most important because people can see how the garden is put together. They can see the bones of the garden.

“There are so many incredible plants in the garden in the winter, both for form, for texture, and in flower. Wonderful things from broadleaf evergreens, to conifers, to evergreen perennials. A garden doesn’t have to be a flat pallet of mulch in the wintertime. This is what your garden can look like.”

Winter visitation weekends are February 26-28 and March 5-7.

“With more people working and staying at home and trapped indoors, gardening boomed throughout 2020,” said Avent. “Gardening allows us to get outside and draw healing energy from the earth. Gardening is especially beneficial during tough times, not to mention the beauty and joy it brings.”

Established in 1988 south of downtown Raleigh, the not-for-profit Juniper Level Botanic Garden has grown into a 28-acre conservation and inspiration garden whose mission is to discover, grow, study, propagate and share the world’s flora.

Participating in dozens of domestic and international plant expeditions since the mid-90s, Avent amassed one of the world’s most diverse plant collections. “Currently, we have just over 27,000 different kinds of plants,” explained Avent. “That makes our botanic garden one of the top five collections in the United States.

“We knew the climate was changing and wanted to preserve plants. Many of the plants we found on our trips are now extinct in the wild, and we’re the only place they exist. The more the climate changes, the more paramount it becomes to preserve these plants for human benefit.

“We have always had a close connection with North Carolina State University and JC Raulston Arboretum. The Arboretum’s mission and ours are identical. To collect, study, propagate and share plants. The Arboretum’s primary focus is woody plants, and Juniper Level’s focus is primarily on perennial plants.

“Raulston Arboretum currently has about 7,000 different plants. Between this collection and the 27,000 at Juniper Level, the result is one of the largest and top collections in the world of genetics.

“We set up an endowment through the university. When the endowment for the garden is fully funded, that will allow us to open full-time as a public garden and a sister to Raulston Arboretum,” added Avent.

Meanwhile, operational funding for Juniper Level Botanic Garden continues to be provided by plant sales, growing and shipping over 100,000 plants each year, and selling plants during the open garden weekends.

Fundraising efforts for Juniper Level Botanic Garden in conjunction with JC Raulston Arboretum, operate under the auspices of The Endowment Fund of North Carolina State University, a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax ID 56-6000756. Donors receive an official receipt for contributions to the fund.

5 Sectors That Bloomed In The Aftermath Of The COVID-19 Pandemic

0

Some industries were able to resist, whereas many industries gave into the circumstances and were permanently shut. Hospitality and aviation were the sectors affected the most, in my opinion, because of the imposed nationwide lockdown.

These particular sectors have adapted to the new normal and therefore are blooming, and they are not going anywhere any time soon. As you are reading this article, I am going to presume you want to know about the industries that survived COVID-19 and so that you can make a career by being a part of those sectors.

If so, read my blog to the end, as I will be letting you know about the sectors that benefited the most amid and after the pandemic.

5 Sectors That Bloomed In The Aftermath Of The COVID-19 Pandemic

These are some of the sectors that have survived the atrocities of COVID-19 and have come out as champions.

  • Freelance Blogging

Amid the pandemic, people were not allowed to step out of their homes except when it was absolutely necessary. Since people had to contain themselves in their homes and apartments, electronic devices became a major part of their lives. People having a certain set of skills and niches freelanced their content in return for their set rate.

  • Affiliate Marketing

Creating content is a very lucrative way to affiliate market products. The scope of affiliate marketers also grew. They marketed the products people used the most during the pandemic. As that time was very stressful, people watched anything and everything to relax. Furthermore, people had all day to themselves, sitting at home. So people kept looking for ways to pass the time.

  • Crypto trading

Crypto trading bloomed amid COVID-19, so much so that Bitcoins’ price hit its peak at a whopping 42,000 in January 2021. When Bitcoin first came under the media’s spotlight back in 2009, it was just a mere 0.0008 USD, and now as I am writing this tech article, the price has hit a staggering 34,373.10.

Not only is it one of the most desirable virtual currencies, but it also serves as one of the best investment options in 2021. When COVID-19 first hit, the government started taking several steps like imposing nationwide lockdowns, shutting down shops and business activities. All these made crypto investors nervous.

They panicked and started selling off their Bitcoins as many financial experts had predicted that Bitcoin would not survive the wrath of the pandemic. This led to a total market collapse, and Bitcoins fell to 3000USD. But there were some big players also called ‘whales’ in crypto lingo.

They already knew the true potential of cryptocurrencies and held on to their Bitcoins, and instead of selling off, they started buying more Bitcoins as the prices were already low. Soon other investors joined in. Visit https://cryptoengine.app to start investing.

This way, not only did it stabilize the market but also made the price of Bitcoins break the roof, and since then, the Bitcoins have been making and breaking records.

  • Online Education

The COVID-19 paved the way for online education. Online education was in bits and pieces throughout the world. In western countries, online education was normalized, but online education was not deemed normal in Africa and other third world nations.

Since all schools, colleges and universities were shut down amid the pandemic. There was no other way but to make online education an extremely crucial part of the new normal. Online teaching and learning serve a ton of advantages; one of them is you can do these from the comfort of your homes and in your pajamas. The sector of online education is blooming and is here to stay.

  • Digital Visual Content (OTT Platforms)

There was a huge surge in the viewership of OTT platforms amid pandemic due to the lockdown. People literally watched anything new that came out during the pandemic. Good or bad, it did not matter. They just needed to kill time.

The OTT platforms like Netflix, DIsney+, and Amazon Prime Video made huge profits. Many movies that were supposed to be released in theaters had to be released on these platforms due to the pandemic.

People do not want to go to the theatres anymore; people want to watch movies from the comfort of their homes. The sector of digital content is blooming like anything.

Final Thoughts

There you have it, the top 5 sectors That Bloomed In The Aftermath Of The COVID-19 Pandemic. It’s about time we adapt ourselves to the normal and get on with our lives.

Which household pests to expect this spring

0

Spring is almost upon us, and we all know what that means – that’s right, it means that all the critters of nature are coming back out and heading straight for your home! Well, we don’t mean to be overly dramatic here, but three’s a good chance you’ll encounter some unwanted guests on your property this coming spring, and your best bet is to keep yourself well-informed. This will help you keep calm in case you do see a mouse in your kitchen, and it will also help you take preventive measures.

So which household pests are most common during the spring?

  1. Ants and termites

First up on our seasonal list, we have ants and termites, along with any other creepy-crawlies you can fathom. As the snows melt off, the ant colonies come back to life and begin going about, working, looking for food, or indeed, mates. And while it’s unlikely that the ants are there because they fancy you, they probably regard you as a great source of food. Unlike larger pests, ants are difficult to keep away, because they don’t require big sources of food. They may well be attracted to crumbs you didn’t even know you’d left, so you have to be vigilant.

Termites are in a similar position, only they’re not hitting you up in search of food, but rather of shelter. They say spring is the season for love, and termites seem to be all about that. So as soon as they find a mate, around mid-spring, they’re going to start looking for a new home. And you know what makes an excellent home for termites? That’s right, moist or damaged wood, so you’ll want to have someone inspect your property and fix any structural problems before they attract a family of termites, cause that will do way more damage.

  1. Opossums

Opossums are interesting creatures, really. The truth of the matter is, they’re around pretty much every season, but in the heavy snow, they’re less likely to head out (you know, just like humans). This means that as soon as the nights get warmer, opossums are ready to go on the prowl. And their number one venue? Your property.

So what can you do to prevent opossums from popping up? Keep your property clean. If you have fruit trees in your yard, you’ll want to make sure you pick up any fallen fruit before you retire for the night, otherwise it’s likely to attract opossums. Also, don’t leave pet food out and unattended.

  1. Squirrels

In this particular case, squirrels are quite similar to opossums. As soon as spring rolls around, they leave their cozy nooks and come out looking for food, and while squirrels themselves are harmless, they tend to attract bigger rollers. It’s quite possible to find a family of snakes visiting your yard – they heard you got squirrels! So as above, keep potential food sources to a minimum and learn some home remedies to get rid of squirrels here.

  1. Rodents

Well, squirrels are rodents, but here, we’re also talking about their cousins – mice and rats. These tend to flock to homes in the warmer months of late spring and are mainly looking for food at this point. But since mice and rats have been known to sneak into kitchens if they sense a ready source of food, we recommend extending the above precautions to the interior of your home, also.

Another good prevention method is to regularly check for cracks and potential entry points in your walls and window structures. See, rodents aren’t very high on the food chain, and they too know that other predators are coming back to life during the spring, so the temptation to hide inside your home is too great to resist.
