Three Ways North Carolina Residents Can Stay Entertained Through the Winter Months

0

As a North Carolina resident, it can be hard to drag yourself through the winter months. The wet weather makes outdoor areas tough to visit, the dreary days can feel draining and it can be hard to stay motivated with your fitness. Yet the winter offers several incredible opportunities to try something different and recharge.

If you are dreading the upcoming holiday season, then we can help. Below are three ways North Carolina residents can try something new to get themselves through the winter months.

Get Online

The online world doesn’t have to be a faceless, endless vacuum of social media and clickbait articles. You can have some extremely rewarding entertainment experiences if you choose the right place and know where to look. In some instances, it may not even cost you a lot of money to do so.

One way many people are now entertaining themselves on the internet is by playing slot games for real cash. With a wide range available, many incorporate favorite franchises and themes. If you utilize bonus offers like the ones found at the link, you can even play for a limited time using the house’s funds. Games go from easy ones to let beginners start, right up to more complex versions with high jackpot bonuses.

With streaming technology, you can also interact and do most of the social things you love from the comfort of your home. You may start a book club on Zoom or create a weekly Facetime event where you have a discussion group about certain topics.

Start a Side Hustle

A little extra money is always useful. Though many people talk about opening side hustles to earn extra income, the reality is that all take time and effort. For most people, this is a time they do not have in their daily lives.

Over the winter months, as you begin to go out less, this time may start to appear, and you can begin to get your side hustle ready for the summer months. You may start designing clothing or build a website and create content. If you plan, you will not find yourself rushing around in busy periods where quality may suffer as a result.

However, if you do get started straight away then this can be one of the best times to earn extra cash. As the holiday season approaches, more opportunities arrive. People need to buy gifts, will fork out for added entertainment and even craft fairs and events take place in preparation.

Educate Yourself

This time is also great for working on self-improvement. Luckily, you do not have to pay thousands in tuition fees for education. There are numerous resources on the internet that allow you to better yourself in different ways.

YouTube is a great source of information on everything from learning languages to musical instruments. However, if you want something more focused then sites like Udemy and Coursera often have sales where you can get exceptional educational courses for very little.

With just one or two of these suggestions, you should be able to make the most of the winter months. When the summer comes, you will be ready and prepared.

Governor Cooper Warns of Hurricane Ian-Related Scams

0

NC Governor Roy Cooper is urging all residents to be cautions against potential insurance and internet scams related to Hurricane Ian relief.

“This is a timely reminder that cybercriminals are out there waiting to take advantage of people in crisis and those who want to help them,” Governor Cooper said this week in a press release.

Posing as official representatives of disaster aid organizations or charities, scammers frequently use social engineering techniques, like phishing emails, texts, and phone calls, to solicit personal and financial information and to gain access to devices and networks that can often hold sensitive data.

Smithsonian Coming To Charlotte With ‘Men of Change’ Exhibit

0

The Smithsonian is partnering with the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture and Levine Museum of the New South to bring the dynamic exhibition Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. to the Charlotte community, October 8, 2022 – March 12, 2023.

The exhibition presents the narrative of a nation through the profiles of significant African American men who are icons in the country’s historical and cultural landscape. Created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), Men of Change is made possible through the support of Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford.

“In the spirit of our mission and legacy, bringing Men of Change to Charlotte is a great gift and honor,” said David R. Taylor, president and CEO, Harvey B. Gantt Center.  “We are excited to collaborate with Levine Museum of the New South to showcase the stories of these iconic men who have contributed greatly to the good of our society, and to celebrate the local Men of Change in our community.”

“The Gantt and Levine Museum strive to ignite dialogue and engagement that connects the community through history, art, culture, and celebration.” Said Kathryn Hill, President and CEO, Levine Museum of the New South. “Collaboration is one of the Museum’s founding values and we hope this partnership around Men of Change inspires the community to visit both museums to hear the voices and share the stories of these extraordinary men.”

A diverse group of artists, advisors, academics, curators, and museum professionals determined the men chosen as Men of Change. The exhibition highlights revolutionary men—including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, W.E.B. DuBois, and Kendrick Lamar—whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country through politics, sports, science, entertainment, business, and religion. Each biography is paired with original artwork by a noted artist that illustrates the subject’s unique contribution. The exhibition weaves a collective tapestry of what it is to be an African American man, past and present, and the legacy that only strengthens across generations.

“We hope that by experiencing Men of Change visitors will see a lesson for us all, regardless of gender, race or nationality,” said Myriam Springuel, director of SITES and Smithsonian Affiliations. “In these men we see an absolute ideal and a well of inspiration that encourages us to become our best selves.”

The Gantt and Levine Museum share this exhibition which revolves around seven themes.  The Gantt will display Storytellers, Fathering, and Imagining, Levine Museum will display Catalysts, Myth-Breakers, and Community, and both museums will display Loving.

“Ford and the Smithsonian have a shared commitment to honoring people and achievements that reflect America’s diverse culture,” said Mary Culler, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Ford Fund is proud to bring Men of Change to Charlotte to help showcase the legacies of African American men who have changed the world for the better.”

During the exhibition’s run, both museums will partner on community programming aligned with the exhibition and each museum will feature a special temporary exhibition that highlights local Charlotte “men of change” who have inspired and influenced positive change in their communities. The Men of Change exhibition will feature a talk-back section, encouraging visitors to nominate local men in Charlotte who they would like to acknowledge.

With a generous gift from Wells Fargo, the Charlotte community sponsor, free admission is made possible to both institutions while this exhibition is on view. ”We believe Wells Fargo has a tremendous opportunity to make a positive impact in the communities where we work, live and serve,” said Michelle Lee, head of Regional Branch Banking for Wells Fargo and a member of the Gantt board of directors. “Our support for this exhibit, as well as arts and culture overall in Charlotte, connects directly with our commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in ways that will result in sustainable progress and lasting impact.”

Men of Change opens Saturday, October 8 at both the Gantt and Levine Museum. For more information about the exhibition, visit menofchange.si.edu, ganttcenter.org, and museumofthenewsouth.org.

Serious About Sustainability? Here Are Six Things You Can Do

0

Many people are becoming more conscious of how their choices have a direct impact on the environment, their health, and the world as a whole. More and more people are taking strides toward becoming more sustainable in an effort to reduce their environmental footprint and make sure the world is healthy for generations to come. The average person usually knows about recycling or driving an electric car, but may be at a complete loss when it comes to other sustainability practices. Don’t worry because we have you covered with six things you can do if you’re serious about sustainability.

Recycle

Recycling is one of the easiest things you can do if you’re serious about sustainability. This has a positive impact on the environment by reducing the number of products or packing in landfills. Sometimes we forget what can and cannot be recycled so do your research or check out the Earth911 Recycling Directory to help you see what’s acceptable in your local community. If your neighborhood doesn’t pick up recycling, you can always find a drop-off location or request curbside service. Don’t forget that you can recycle items such as electronics, cellphones, and batteries at certain locations as well. Beyondsurplus is a company that commonly recycles electronics and offers its services throughout the United States.

Save Water

Reducing your water usage is probably one of the best things you can do if you’re serious about sustainability. You can install a low-flow showerhead, fix leaky faucets, shower for shorter durations, and only run the dishwasher on full loads. You can also reuse water after cooking to water your plants. Consider purchasing a reusable water bottle instead of buying a ton of individual water bottles. Plastic water bottles are incredibly harmful to the environment and local wildlife.

Avoid Food Waste

Avoiding food waste is a good habit you can learn if you’re serious about sustainability.  According to the EPA, 94% of the food we throw out ends up in a landfill, which contributes to global warming and climate change. This also amplifies the amount of methane, a greenhouse gas that is 21 times more potent than carbon monoxide. You can help this problem by saving leftovers, reducing portion sizes, planning meals in advance, and learning how to store food. You can take aging fruits and vegetables, and bake them into a pastry such as a cake, muffin, or pie. Taking small steps will help the planet stay healthy and green for decades to come.

Alternative Modes of Transportation

Consider switching to alternative modes of transportation if you’re serious about sustainability. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. You can significantly reduce your carbon footprint and greenhouse gasses by driving your car a lot less. If you have to get something not too far from your local neighborhood, think about riding a bike, using an electric scooter, or walking. Most cities offer a wide variety of mass transit options such as the bus or the train. If public transit isn’t your cup of tea, consider carpooling or vanpooling with friends. This shift can help save money on gas and help improve the air quality for everyone in your local area.

Vegan Makeup

Making the switch from traditional makeup to vegan makeup is worthwhile if you’re serious about sustainability. Traditional makeup is composed of synthetic and harmful ingredients that are toxic for the environment as well as your skin. Tons of makeup go to waste everyday and the plastic packaging tends to have a negative impact on local wildlife and the environment. Several vegan makeup brands are making an effort to make packaging that is biodegradable and sustainable. Ingredients in vegan makeup are derived from plants and minerals, so they’re good for the environment.

Make Your Home Green

Going the extra mile and making your home greener is a good move if you’re serious about sustainability. Think about replacing your windows with energy-saving windows or investing in solar panels. You can use energy-saving light bulbs and/or a programmable thermostat to foster more efficient cooling and heating in your home. Look into buying energy-efficient appliances and consider switching over to a green power utility service. All of these efforts can make a big impact on your local community, reduce environmental pollution, reduce energy costs, and possibly inspire others to do the same.

Conclusion

The practice of living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is becoming more and more common these days. People care about their effect on the environment and are searching for ways to make a difference. Some of the ways you can become more sustainable are by recycling, reducing water usage, and avoiding food waste. Consider taking an alternative mode of transportation, using vegan makeup on a regular basis, and making your home green. Implementing these six sustainable steps can have a serious impact on your local community, your home, your environment, and potentially the world.

What You Need to Know About Folate vs. Folic Acid: How Do They Differ?

0

If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, folic acid is one nutrient you want to make sure you’re getting enough of. But what is the difference between folate and folic acid? And which form is better for you? Join us as we answer those questions and more. We’ll also discuss how much folate vs. folic acid you need during pregnancy, and share some other vitamins and nutrients important to mom and baby as well.

What Is Folate?

Folate is a water-soluble vitamin that belongs to the B-vitamin family. It is found naturally in many foods, including leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Folate is important for many bodily functions, including cell growth and DNA synthesis. It also plays a role in the formation of red blood cells and the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs).

What Is Folic Acid?

Folate is also added to some foods and supplements in the form of folic acid. Therefore, folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. It is not found naturally in food but is added to fortified foods and supplements. The body converts folic acid into folate before it can be used.

How Much Folate vs. Folic Acid Do You Need During Pregnancy?

The recommended daily amount (RDA) of folate for pregnant women is 600 micrograms (mcg). This RDA applies to both natural and synthetic forms of folate. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that all women who are capable of becoming pregnant should take a daily supplement that contains 400 mcg of folic acid. This is in addition to eating a diet that includes folate-rich foods.

Why Is Folic Acid Important During Pregnancy?

Folic acid is important during pregnancy because it helps prevent certain birth defects, including NTDs. These defects occur in the early weeks of pregnancy, often before a woman even knows she is pregnant. Folic acid helps prevent NTDs by reducing the risk of neural tube defects by 50 to 70%.

The benefits of folic acid in utero go beyond neural tube defect prevention. Folic acid has also been shown to improve pregnancy outcomes, including reducing the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight. Additionally, folic acid supplementation has been linked to a reduced risk of preeclampsia and placental abruption.

How Can You Make Sure You’re Getting Enough Folic Acid?

The best way to make sure you’re getting enough folate is to eat a diet that includes folate-rich foods and take a daily supplement that contains folic acid. Some foods, such as breakfast cereals, bread, and pasta, are fortified with folic acid. You can also find supplements that contain both folate and folic acid.

What is 5MTHF Folate?

5MTHR Folate is the natural form of folate found in food and supplements. It is also known as methyltetrahydrofolate or methyl-folate. This natural folate can be more easily absorbed by the body than a generalized folic acid supplement. Therefore, it is another choice for pregnant women and is available in both food and supplement forms.

What Foods Are Good Sources of Folate?

Folate is found naturally in many foods, including leafy green vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fortified foods. Here are some good examples of folate sources you can consume naturally:

  • Spinach: One cup of cooked spinach provides 262 mcg of folate or 87% of the RDA.
  • Black-eyed peas: One cup of cooked black-eyed peas provides 358 mcg of folate or 119% of the RDA.
  • Fortified breakfast cereal: One cup of fortified breakfast cereal provides 100-400 mcg of folic acid or 25-100% of the RDA.
  • Nuts and seeds: One ounce of nuts provides 50-100 mcg of folate or 17-33% of the RDA.

Wrapping Up: Other Important Vitamins During Pregnancy

Folic acid is just one of the many important vitamins and nutrients you need during pregnancy. Protein is also an essential nutrient during pregnancy that helps the body build and maintain muscle tissue. It is also necessary for the production of enzymes and hormones. Here are some others:

  1. Vitamin A is a nutrient that is important for vision, the immune system, and cell growth. It also helps maintain healthy skin and mucous membranes.
  2. Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerves and blood cells healthy. It also helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells.
  3. Vitamin C is a nutrient that helps the body absorb iron and maintain healthy skin, bones, and connective tissue.
  4. Vitamin D is a nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. It also helps maintain healthy bones and teeth.
  5. Vitamin E is a nutrient that helps keep the immune system strong. It also acts as an antioxidant, which means it helps protect cells from damage.

You can get most of the vitamins you need during pregnancy from food. However, you may need to take a supplement if you have certain medical conditions or don’t eat enough nutrient-rich foods. Be sure to talk to your doctor about which vitamins you need and how much to take.

Do Blue Light Glasses Work? Discover the Basics

0

Blue light is a type of light that has a wavelength of around 450 to 480 nanometers. Blue light can be found in daylight as well as in artificial sources such as LEDs, CFLs, and fluorescent lights. Blue light glasses are not the same thing as sunglasses with blue lenses, which can protect your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light but not blue light.

The blue light glasses you see advertised are actually phototherapy glasses that have been specially designed to filter out certain wavelengths of light and not just any old pair of blue-tinted glasses. These products are designed to block the harmful effects of artificial blue light sources by filtering out the damaging rays. Let’s take a look at the basics of how blue light glasses work, and how they can help you.

What Are the Effects of Blue Light?

Blue light has several ways in which it’s not good for your eyes. We need natural blue light to keep our bodies functioning. Artificial blue light, such as from a mobile device, has been shown to have a negative effect on our sleep. It can affect our circadian rhythm and make us feel more awake when we should be winding down for the day. This can lead to poor sleep quality and even mood disorders like depression and anxiety.

In a more immediate sense, spending too much time looking at mobile devices, tablets, and computer screens can cause Computer Vision Syndrome. Computer Vision Syndrom is also known as Digital Eye Strain.

If you’ve ever rubbed your eyes after a long day working in front of a screen, you were probably feeling the effects of Digital Eye Strain; itchy, red, and dry eyes are one of the most common symptoms. Headaches, blurry vision, and neck pain are also to be expected with Digital Eye Strain. The long-term effects of frequent blue light exposure may be as severe as macular degeneration, cataracts, and eye cancer.

How Do Blue Light Glasses Work?

Blue light glasses work by filtering out certain wavelengths of light. They are designed to block the blue light that can damage your eyes from your computer, phone, and other artificial light sources. Blue light glasses are typically made of special materials like blue light filtering lenses or green-tinted lenses with blue light-blocking filters. If you have a prescription, you can also buy blue light glasses with prescription lenses.

Benefits of Blue Light Glasses

Blue light glasses are designed to protect your eyes from blue light and reduce glare and eye strain from light sources like computer screens, smartphones, and TVs. They can also reduce headaches and improve sleep when used before bedtime. This is especially important for people who do a lot of screen-based work, like programmers and graphics designers.

The blue light from computer screens can slowly damage your retina, leading to eye diseases like macular degeneration. Blue light glasses may help protect your sleep patterns too. Artificial blue light can delay your circadian rhythm and make it harder to fall asleep. Wearing blue light glasses before bed may help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and have a better quality of sleep.

What to Look For in Blue Light Glasses

You can buy blue light-blocking glasses in a variety of styles, such as reading glasses, sunglasses, or even safety goggles. If you decide to buy them online, make sure you’re buying a pair of blue light-blocking glasses and not just a pair of blue-tinted sunglasses. Blue light-blocking glasses are primarily designed for artificial light; our bodies need the natural blue light provided by the sun.

What Blue Light Glasses Do Not Do

Blue light glasses are not designed to improve your vision, nor are they safety glasses. They aren’t a substitute for regular eye care, nor will they cure existing eye problems. If you’re having eye problems beyond the usual Digital Eye Strain symptoms, you may want to make an appointment with your eye doctor.

Eye for an Eye

Blue light can have a negative effect on your eyes, sleep, and overall health. Blue light glasses can protect your eyes from blue light and help you avoid the negative health effects of blue light. They reduce glare and eye strain from light sources like computer screens, smartphones, and TVs. They can also reduce headaches and improve sleep when used before bedtime.

It’s important to not rely on blue light glasses to protect your eyes like safety glasses or expect them to improve your vision. They won’t cure existing eye problems. Make sure to keep up with regular eye care.

We hope this has shed some helpful light on the subject of blue light glasses. If you’re among the many millions who spend all day looking at a screen, blue light glasses may be right for you.
