As Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month approaches in April, Brave Step challenges the community to “Color It Blue.”

“Color It Blue is Brave Step’s signature campaign to encourage survivors, loved ones, allies and the community to embody advocacy and initiate new conversations about the pervasive issue of sexual violence,” said Dr. Lisa Littlejohn Hill, board president. “Each day, we see the life-altering mental, physical, social, financial and spiritual impact of sexual violence, and it is our responsibility to challenge the community to be brave and make a difference. Color It Blue is an easy way to take that first step.”

The reach and impact of sexual violence runs deep.

  • About 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys in the United States experience child sexual abuse.
  • Ninety-one percent of child sexual abuse perpetrators are individuals known by the child victim or their family members. 
  • Every 68 seconds someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. 
  • One hundred percent of us are impacted by sexual violence.

The report analyzed the following data for the 50 biggest metropolitan areas in America:

  • Standardized listing days per home, Jan. 2022 – Dec. 2022
  • 2-year change in total non-farm employment per 2-year residential building permit total
  • Projected change in owner households, 2022 – 2023

Zillow notes in their press release:

“Pushing Charlotte to the top of the list is its forecasted annual home price growth, and Cleveland’s second-place rank can be attributed to its high market velocity and job growth. While Pittsburgh is the only market in the top five with forecasted household declines, it makes up for the drop in owner-occupied homes with the fourth-highest ratio of jobs added per new home permitted.”

This year will be the 26th running of the Queen’s Cup in Mineral Springs, North Carolina, and once again it is set to be a yearly highlight for many people. The event continues to attract both keen horse racing fans and many people who enjoy the social aspect of the event.

As ever, the race day takes place on the last Saturday in April. As ever, a big crowd is expected to attend this year’s meeting. Here is everything you need to know.

Feature Race Is a Steeplechase

Steeplechase racing is not as common in the United States as it is in places like the UK and Ireland. The most famous steeplechase in the world is the Grand National. You may have seen Noble Yeats win that race in 2022. Like the Queen’s Cup, that contest takes place in April and last year’s winner is the horse racing odds +800 favorite to prevail again in 2023.

The most prestigious steeplechase in the world is the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Galopin Des Champs is the +150 favorite in the Cheltenham Festival betting to win that contest this year. He could be set to establish himself as the most exciting chaser in the world.

The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase, won in 2022 by French Light, is a novice chase that is run over the distance of two and 3/8 miles. It features horses with very little experience in jumping fences. The winner of this race tends to go on to compete in major national prizes later in the year.

Events On the Day

There are a total of five races on the Queen’s Cup race day schedule, but the afternoon is not just about the racing – there are lots of activities to get involved in. 

The hat contest is one of the competitions which has sat on the schedule since the first year of the event. You can register to enter between 10.00 am-11.30 am. The only rule is that your hat needs to be hand decorated. There are prizes for the best men’s and women’s hats.

Before you arrive on the course, you can take part in a tailgate. Just like you may have seen outside of the Bank of American Stadium before a Carolina Panthers NFL game, fans gather in the car park and enjoy food and drink together. Prizes are also given to the ‘Most Elegant’, ‘Most Creative’, and ‘Most Whimsical’ tailgate.

Dress Code

Although there is no official dress code, it is advised to wear comfortable shoes on the day and to check the weather beforehand. Hopefully, the sun will be shining for this year’s event.

Some racegoers like to bring a foldable chair with them which they can use on the lawn at the racecourse. There is some seating around the track, but bringing your own seats ensures you can move around across the afternoon.

Food and drink are sold at the racecourse, but you can bring your own if you want to have a picnic.

Duke Energy Opens New 12,000 Acre 207 Megawatt Wind Farm

Duke Energy Opens New 12,000 Acre 207 Megawatt Wind Farm

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions (DESS), a nonregulated commercial brand of Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK), today announced it has placed into commercial operation the 207-megawatt (MW) 12,000-acre Ledyard Windpower project in Kossuth County, Iowa.

“More than 10% of the nation’s wind power is in Iowa, and it’s exciting for our company to begin operating in that market,” said Chris Fallon, president of Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. “We also have a terrific customer in Verizon, and we’re pleased to help them advance their own renewable energy portfolio for their operations.”

Verizon Communications is supporting the project through a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 180 MW of power from the Ledyard project.

“Verizon’s support of renewable energy is a key enabler to achieving our goal of net-zero emissions in our operations by 2035,” said James Gowen, Verizon’s chief sustainability officer and senior vice president, global supply chain. “Through investments in clean energy solutions – like this agreement with Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions – Verizon is doing its part to green the U.S. energy grid.”

While Duke has not provided exact construction costs, the Charlotte Business Journal estimates that the entire project likely costs $630-640 million, based on US Energy Information Agency information.

This is DESS’s first project in the state, providing enough renewable capacity to power the equivalent of 75,000 U.S. homes. It consists of 46 Vestas V150 4.5-MW turbines.

Charlotte’s History Comes Alive with “Voices From The Past” Uptown Cemetery Event

Voices From The Past is returning in 2023 as a part of Charlotte SHOUT! Come take a “spirited stroll” through Charlotte’s historic cemeteries and interact with over 20 portrayers as they tell the stories of the men and women who helped make Charlotte what it is today.

The event will feature food trucks, live music from the Charlotte Folk Society, and complimentary golf cart rides from Carolina Golf Cars for our visitors that may have difficulty walking around the cemetery. The event will also feature the Charlotte Fire Department’s restored Neptune fire pump truck, circa 1860 and cars from the Queen City Model A Club.

This event is put on by the Historic Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery Inc. It is free and open to the public. It is both family-friendly and pet-friendly. Whether you are a native of Charlotte or new to the city, this is a fun event for all to learn more about our history while helping to preserve it.

WHEN: Saturday, April 1st  from 1 – 4 p.m.

America’s Largest Car Show Coming To Concord

MotorTrend Group, a Warner Bros. Discovery company, has announced the 2023 HOT ROD Power Tour in celebration of HOT ROD’s 75th anniversary. The HOT ROD Power Tour Driven By Continental Tire will be heading to Concord this coming June. As America’s largest traveling car show, more than 6,000 cars and trucks of all years, makes and models will be on display for tens of thousands of automotive enthusiasts. The tour will feature over 1,000 miles of driving, with high-octane events such as drag racing, autocross and live entertainment.

Founded in 1948, HOT ROD is the most recognized brand in the world of high-performance cars. This year will be a special year for the brand, with numerous events planned throughout the United States in honor of 75 years of elevating hot rod car culture. In honor of its 75th anniversary, HOT ROD is now offering free access to more than seven decades of its prized archival content, including a digital version of every HOT ROD issue published prior to 2022. The digital archive contains more than 900 magazines totaling more than 128,000 pages of content, taking readers from the early days of organized racing on the dry lake beds through the horsepower wars of the ‘60s to present day, with features on new cars, new engines, and new trends just as they were covered by the leading authority on high-performance vehicles at the time.
