Hurricane Matthew Now Expected To Reach Charlotte Region This Weekend

Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful Atlantic tropical storm in almost a decade, is now gearing up to deliver a potentially devastating blow to the Caribbean as it begins its northward journey up to eastern coast and into the continental united states.

It’s now expected to make landfall in the Carolina’s sometime later this week.

Evening forecast models projected the storm could hit the Carolinas as soon as late Friday or early Saturday, with winds of over 100 mph.

Governor Pat McCrory just declared a state of emergency in 66 counties, saying, “We want to be prepared.”

“While we do not yet know how Hurricane Matthew will impact North Carolina, we do know that we can expect some form of impacts on our state,” McCrory commented during a news conference.

The last storm to push hurricane-force winds into the Charlotte region was Fran in 1996.

Award-Winning App Design Company Tapity Moves Headquarters Into Historic Cornelius Building

downtown Cornelius nc tapityTapity, the developer of several nationally trending apps has just moved their headquarters into one of Cornelius’ must historic buildings.

According to founder Jeremy Olson, they now have six full-time employees and usually between three and five part-timers workers.

Here’s a brief peek into their new Cornelius headquarters (complete with ping-pong table and coffee bar);

 

The company was initially founded in 2009 while Jeremy was still a student at UNCC. He decided to launch the company instead of graduating.

Since launching, Tapity has developed “Hours”, about which Forbes magazine said “ the perfect iPhone time tracking app,” – after reaching to top of the iTunes charts, Hours was quickly sold for an undisclosed amount.

The company has also created “Grades”, an app which helps students set better targets for their grades (grossing $45,950 last year), and “Languages”, an offline language translation app (grossed $428,268 last year).

After their success with Grades, Languages, and Hours and finishing their new Cornelius ‘silicone valle-esque’ headquarters, they noted on their website that their direction as a company is much more clear. They now describe themselves as; an indie app company, a boutique app consultancy, and a teaching company (using their new App Making online course).

North Carolina Now Enforcing 20 New Laws Including Police Footage Release and Moped Registration

police-footage-releasedOver 20 laws have now been added or changed to the North Carolina books starting this week – one of the most significant being how the public can seek access to police video footage.

Another interesting law that has just been put on the books in the creation of a “blue alert” system that will alert  alerting the public when authorities need help finding a suspect who kills or seriously injures a police officer.

Also, bad news for moped owners, you now have to get your moped registered.

Fort Mill’s $67 Million Southern Bypass Is About To Open

fort mill southern bypassAfter decades in the making and over $67 Million spent (over twice of the initial budget), the Fort Mill Southern Bypass, is about to open its entire length.

The main bypass will connect U.S. 21 near Rock Hill all the way up to Tega Cay, without forcing cars to drive directly through downtown Fort Mill.

Here is the original 3D rendered video of the completed bypass;

York County voters approved a $7.1 million bypass project in 1997, two more $7.5 million phases in 2003, and a final $4.7 million connection phase in 2011 to connect the bypass with Spratt and Sutton roads.

The entire multi-phased project should have only cost about $26.8 million but will now cost over $67 million due to underestimates, project delays, and unforeseen issues with construction.

Charlotte’s top homicide detective (whose nickname on the streets is literally ‘homicide’) is about to star in a new reality show on Investigation Discovery that will highlight some of his most famous cases;

In his 34 years with the CMPD, he’s investigated over 800 homicides – 90% of which have now been solved. He’s earned him national commendations and national speaking requests for his unusually effective style and persona.

The new show “I Am Homicide” will debut at 10 p.m. on Tuesday night on the cable channel Investigation Discovery.

South Charlotte Mother’s Painting Goes Viral After Protests

14441211_10208594674558551_4250021111344180520_nSouth Charlotte artist and mother of 3, Donna Heil, just had her oil painting go viral after last week’s protests following the death of Keith Lamont Scott.

She posted an image of her painting to her Facebook page and it almost immediately started being shared.

After it reached 1,500 shares, she commented, “Spreading love from Charlotte NC to Australia, England & across the globe. I am so grateful for this opportunity to be a part in this healing mission.”

The inspiration for the painting came as she was traveling to the Elizabeth neighborhood, she stopped on the Randolph Road bridge over Independence and snapped an incredible picture of the sunset behind the skyline. Donna also happened to notice an image of the two hands, one black, one white, forming a heart appear after the protests began. She painted the hands forming a heart over the skyline with the sunset and she knew she had a winner….but she had no idea it would become this viral (it’s now received over 1,900 shares)…

Duke Energy Is Buying Piedmont Natural Gas for $4.9 Billion

duke buying piedmont gasDuke Energy is about close on their purchase of The Piedmont Natural Gas company for a total of $4.9 billion – both companies are currently headquartered in Charlotte.

According to a press release, Duke Energy now expects to close on its purchase of Piedmont Natural Gas this coming Monday after the NC Utilities Commission gives its approval.

The acquisition will expand what has already grown into America’s largest electric utility.

Duke Energy currently controls markets throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky, and now employs over 29,000 people. The deal will add about 1 million customers, and about 1,900 new employees to Duke’s roster.

After the buyout, Piedmont will retain its name, and will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duke Energy – maintaining its current presence and headquarters in southeast Charlotte.

The companies are currently partners on the $5 billion Atlantic Coast Pipeline. The buy-out would make Duke Energy a 50% owner of the pipeline, a 564-mile natural gas pipeline that will be the first to serve North Carolina. Duke currently owns 40% and Piedmont owns 10%.

Ox Blue is a time-lapse construction video company that installs cameras on some of the world’s most prominent projects. Several buildings in Uptown Charlotte have hired them to install cameras for their developments, including; 500 East Morehead, 300 South Tryon, 615 South College, and 640 N Church St.. A couple developments uptown decided not to install the tower cams (including the Mint Museum apartment tower).

Cabarrus County Schools Buying 108 Acres In Concord To Build $4.6 Million School

As Concord’s growth continues to outpace most of the regions, it’s starting to burst at the seams in terms of infrastructure and community resources.

Cabarrus County Schools are now one step closer to alleviating some of the stress – they were just approved to purchase a 108 acre piece of land in Concord for $4.6 million. They now plan on building a massive 2 story state-of-the-art high school for the ever-increasing population.

“Our No. 1 priority of our school system is a new high school in a centralized location within the county. That was back in December when we rolled that out, and we’ve been looking pretty diligently for land ever since. Had limited options, but we were fortunate enough to be able to come across this piece of property, which actually had been sold but then someone backed out on it, so it became available.” commented Tim Lowder, the executive director of operations for CCS.

The new school’s property sits on Weddington Road in between Cabarrus Country Club and George W. Liles Parkway and right across from the exit of Weddington Hills Elementary School.
