Charlotte’s Mark Harris Now First Candidate In America To Beat An Incumbent This Year

0

Pastor Mark Harris, formerly of First Baptist Church in Uptown Charlotte, has just defeated incumbent Robert Pittenger in yesterday’s NC District 9 primary by 48.5% to Pittenger’s 46.2% with at least 95% of the votes counted. Pittenger is now the first incumbent in America to lose this year, and North Carolina’s first ever member of Congress to lose a primary to a nonincumbent.

Harris ran his campaign with an extremely conservative bent, claiming to possess “the heart and soul of the Republican Party,” and regularly saying that Pittenger was part of the Washington “swamp.”

Yesterday Harris posted that several major reasons people should vote for him were that he received an “A” rating from the NRA, was endorsed by the North Carolina Values Coalition, GrassrootsNC, Mike Huckabee, Sue Myrick, and Dan Bishop;

Harris will now face Dan McCready (who just defeated Christian Cano in the Democratic primary) for North Carolina’s pivotal 9th district;

The 9th district, along with NC’s 13th district, make up two of the most competetive districts in our state, and could determine what party controls congress.

What do you think about Harris’s primary victory? Do you think he will beat McCready?

New Law Makes It Illegal To Own Wild Animals

0

illigal-to-own-wild-pets-in-south-carolinaA new South Carolina has just went into effect making it illegal to own wild exotic animals as pets.

The new law outlaws the ownership of “large wild cat, non-native bear, or great ape” in the state of South Carolina.

There are now only 4 states in America without such laws – Alabama, Nevada, North Carolina and Wisconsin — according to the Humane Society.

There are now estimated to be less than 100 wild animals being kept as pets that would be affected by this new law.

All exotic pets owned before Jan. 1, 2018 can be ‘grandfathered in’. If the owner pays a one-time $500 fee and $100 yearly fee for each pet, they can keep it until the animal dies.

What do you think about the new law?

Charlotte Ranks Among The Top 10 Cities in America For Beer Lovers

0

olde mecklenburg brewery top 10 in charlotteCharlotte was recently ranked by Fortune Magazine as one of the top ten cities in America for beer lovers. The Queen City now has dozens of local craft breweries, and it seems like a new one is opening every week.

The rankings were based on feedback from a nationwide poll of beer experts and connoisseurs – they asked people throughout the industry, “from brewers to hop farmers – to get their take on areas that are showing a lot of potential.”

A total of seven Southern cities ended up ranking among the top 10, including Asheville, Atlanta, Nashville and Athens, Ga.

Fortune’s section about Charlotte states:

“Asheville may get all the attention, but it would be foolish to overlook Charlotte if you’re hunting for the next great beer. While there are still just a small number of brewers, that’s changing – and they’re winning major awards, like NoDa’s Hop Drop ‘N Roll, which took home a gold medal from the World Beer Cup. Other breweries to try include Birdsong and Sycamore Brewing.”

Charlotte Emerges As Finalist in 2020 RNC Bid, and The Only Finalist City That Wants It

0

The City of Charlotte has just been named as the top finalist city to host the Republican National Convention in 2020.

N.C. GOP executive director Dallas Woodhouse, the leader of NC’s Republican Party, told sources that the RNC selection committee has decided that Charlotte, Las Vegas, and San Antonio are the finalist host cities.

The committee told him at the RNC’s recent the spring meeting in Miami that seven cities had been whittled down to these 3 strong contender cities.

Charlotte, however, seems to be the only one of the finalist cities that seems to have any interest in hosting the event.

The City of Charlotte officially submitted their bid to host the 2020 Republican National Convention earlier last month.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support and assistance of our many City of Charlotte partners, hotels, venues and others who helped to craft this thorough response on behalf of our region,” commented CRVA CEO Tom Murray.

The convention would be a huge economic boost for our city, considering that the Democratic National Convention that we hosted in 2012 had an estimated economic impact of over $163 million.

What are your thoughts on Charlotte hosting the RNC?

Train Derailment in York County Spilled Hazardous Materials and ‘Shook’ Homes

0

Yesterday afternoon, a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in York County.

The train was traveling from Linwood, NC to Columbia, SC with a full load of raw and hazardous manufacturing materials.

The 14-car freight train derailed Friday afternoon near Maple Street and Old Nation Road in York County, just feet from an Anne Springs Close Greenway trail.

Jenny Burkhart, who lives right near the derailment site, told reporters that the crash shook her entire house;

Hazmat and other emergency crews worked throughout the afternoon and evening to assess the spill and determine the best way to clean up the materials.

In a press release, York County Emergency Management Director Chuck Haynes noted that there’s no environmental concerns or public health risks from the material spilled and that the cleanup should be finished by the end of this weekend.

10 Worst Charlotte Restaurant Health Scores in April

0

Even though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standards slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.

These are the top 10 worst currently standing inspection scores in Mecklenburg County (some restaurants scored lower in April but were reinspected with higher scores before May 4th):

A Disturbance In The Force Near Caribbean Could Become 2018’s First Tropical Storm

0

Hurricane season typically runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, but violent storms do have the potential of developing at any time. A recent disturbance in the force of a Carribean cold front has now created the conditions for the possible formation of a tropical storm.

As of this morning, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has not yet highlighted this disturbance as an “Invest”—an area of interest capable of becoming a tropical cyclone, but meteorologist Jeff Masters with Weather Underground thinks there’s about a 10% chance that it could develop into a tropical storm.

He notes that a ‘named storm’ in the Atlantic before May 15th is extremely rare, historically, but we have had one every year for the past 3 years.

“It’s uncommon to get a tropical or subtropical depression in the Atlantic by May 15. According to the NOAA Historical Hurricane Tracks website, this has happened 11 times since satellites began monitoring the ocean in the 1970s, with 7 of these depressions going on to become named storms–about a 1-in-7-year event. However, we have had Atlantic named storms form by May 15 the past three years in a row–an event with a 0.3% chance of occurrence based on statistics from the past 48 years.” Those 3 storms were May 8, 2015: Tropical Storm Ana, January 12, 2016: Hurricane Alex, and April 20, 2017: Tropical Storm Arlene.

If this disturbance does turn into a tropical storm, the first name on the list of Atlantic storms for 2018 is Alberto.
