Carolina Panthers Just Announced Plans To Part Ways With Cam Newton

Drama erupted across social media today when the Panthers announced plans to part ways with their longtime starting QB Cam Newton. The Panthers attempted to soften the announcement by saying they gave Cam “permission to seek trade”, but according to Newton, the decision to part ways was a seemingly one-sided surprise.

The organization made the announcement late this morning by sending out a press release and posting to their social media channels.

About an hour after the Panthers posted to Instagram about their decision, saying, “We have given Cam Newton permission to seek a trade“, Cam fired right back by commenting under the post, “please do not try and play me or manipulate the narrative and act like I wanted this; you forced me into this!!”

In the Panthers press release, they noted that “General manager Marty Hurney met with Newton and his representation to discuss the plan, signaling the end of a nine-year run in Carolina“.

“One of the distinct pleasures of my career was selecting Cam with the first pick in the 2011 draft,” Hurney said. “Every year difficult decisions are made and they are never easy. We have been working with Cam and his agent to find the best fit for him moving forward and he will always be a Carolina Panther in our hearts.”

Panthers owner David Tepper also weighed in on the decision to part ways with Newton, saying:

“Cam is one of the all-time greats in Panthers history. If you ask any of our fans for some of their most memorable moments, I’m willing to bet that most of them would include Cam – electrifying plays, giving away footballs after touchdowns, fun celebrations and big wins. His competitiveness and drive are rare. Off the field, you can’t measure Cam’s contributions. He has touched the lives of youth throughout the Carolinas and in Atlanta. He’s unique and I wish him all the best.”

A few hours after the announcement was made, insiders reported that the Panthers were finalizing a three-year deal with former Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, according to the Riot Report.

With states taking actions such as closing bars and restaurants or banning large gatherings to fight the spread of the coronavirus, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Most Aggressive States Against the Coronavirus.

To identify which states are taking the largest actions to combat coronavirus, the site compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 35 key metrics. The data set ranges from tested cases of COVID-19 per capita and state legislation on the pandemic to the uninsured population and share of the workforce in affected industries.

NC Governor Ordering All Bars and Restaurants To Close Their Dining Rooms Indefinitely

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has just ordered all bars and restaurants to close their dining rooms indefinitely starting tonight at 5pm. Restaurants will still be allowed to serve take-out and delivery customers.

The governor gave the announcement this morning.

According to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, there are now a total of 40 cases in North Carolina, with 7 cases in Mecklenburg County, 1 in Cabarrus County, and 1 in Iredell County;

According to the CDC, patients with confirmed CoVID-19 infection have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of:

  • fever
  • cough
  • shortness of breath

CDC believes at this time that symptoms of CoVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 after exposure. This is based on what has been seen previously as the incubation period of MERS viruses.

Series of 5 Earthquakes Rock The Carolinas and Tennessee Over The Past 24 Hours

A total of 5 earthquakes have just rattled our region over the past 24 hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The following quakes were measured in the following sequence:

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years, about a year ago, we saw a 2.9 magnitude quake hit Asheville and a 2.1 magnitude quake that struck Bryson City, NC.

The Carolinas have been known to experience the occasional damage-causing earthquakes.

According to USGS.gov, “The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Over the past few weeks, the world has experienced pandemonium the like of which has not been seen for many decades. The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in countries around the world has results in chaos, with many people succumbing to the infection and thousands losing their lives as a result of contracting Covid-19.

Naturally, the rate at which the infection is spreading has had an impact on all areas and aspects of society, and this includes a huge hit to the education system. Leaders are now looking for ways to implement social distancing, and this has resulted in many schools and colleges across the United States – and in other parts of the world – being closed. This is to minimize the risk of spreading the infection by having students packed into confined spaces.

What Can Students Do?

Naturally, this is a move that will have a huge impact on students, and many will be extremely worried about the impact on their education. A lot of students will be confined to their homes, with more than 135 colleges and universities in the United States now cancelling all in-person classes and advising students to turn to digital technology at home to continue their studies for the time being.

Fortunately, there are digital solutions available to students to help avoid falling behind, and this includes resources and tools such as OneClass or Studocu where students can access class notes and stay up to date with their subjects. Access to these tools and resources can go some way toward helping students to stay on track and will alleviate concerns for those who are nervous about falling behind and flunking their exams as a result of this. It also makes it more convenient for students to continue with their studies.

Of course, the closure of many schools, colleges and universities has been a long time coming, as many suspected this would happen when the disease first began its rampage. However, there will still be many students panicking as well as many parents wondering how they will manage childcare for their kids when they have to go to work. This will then put additional pressure on businesses, who are likely to suffer severe staff shortages.

For college students, the closures will have to cut the risk of infection, and many will be able to continue studying from the safety of their own homes. While around 135 closures are in place at the moment, many more are likely to follow suit as the pandemic continues to wreak havoc. So far, a number of Ivy League colleges including Yale have closed, and also many colleges and universities in Washington State, in the South, and in the West and Midwest.

Taking Drastic Measures

While these closures may feel like drastic measures, they have to be taken because of the nature and rapid spread of the virus. All students can do is to try and minimize the impact on their education by continuing their studies at home and using online resources to minimize contact with others.

North and South Carolina Closing All Schools Due To Coronavirus ‘Community Spread’

As of this morning, we now have a total of 32 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus COVID-19 in North Carolina (4 in Mecklenburg County) and 28 confirmed cases in South Carolina.

Due to what is now considered to be ‘community spread’ of the virus, the governors of both North and South Carolina have issued orders to close all K-12 schools for the rest of the month.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster additionally ordered the closure of all universities and colleges, in addition to K-12 schools.

Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza announced that it will be opening a new location in Gastonia, North Carolina. The build-your-own pizza concept, known for its chef-driven recipes and casually hip restaurants, will be opening on Thursday, March 19 in the Gaston Mall shopping center at 401 Cox Road.

Along with its 11-inch individual sized pizzas, the Gastonia restaurant will also offer Blaze’s new, larger 14-inch sharable pizzas for delivery and carryout, available exclusively by ordering online. The new large pizzas are similar to the chain’s original 11-inch personal size pizzas, but their larger 14-inch size, cut into 8 slices, make them perfect for sharing.

Pizza fans with specific dietary needs can also enjoy gluten-free and keto crusts, vegan cheese and plant-based spicy chorizo. Blaze pizzas are available for carryout or delivery in Gastonia through the Blaze website (www.blazepizza.com), the Blaze Pizza app, or the DoorDash and Postmates delivery platforms.

In Spite of COVID-19 Social Gathering Bans, Charlotteans Continue To Gather in Crowds

The Governor has declared a state of emergency, the President has declared a national emergency, and the CDC “recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States”.

In spite of all of this, however, many Charlotteans continue to live their lives without any seeming changes, especially when it comes to eating and drinking out.

Last night Amos’ SouthEnd featured the 80s tribute band Kix with well over 100 old school rockers showing virtually no “social distancing” (many of whom were in the ‘high risk’ category);

Additionally, many of the restaurants and bars around Uptown Charlotte were packed over the weekend with thousands of Charlotteans celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in spite of all of the quarantine recommendations.

In an attempt to force a change in behavior, NC Governor Roy Cooper has just issued an emergency executive order that now officially “bans mass gatherings” of over 100 people. Violating the new order will result in a class 2 misdemeanor.

Federal Government Approves New $273 Million Casino 35 Miles From Charlotte

The federal government has approved a massive new $273 million casino 35 miles Southwest of Charlotte that would create over 3,000 jobs.

This would be the first official casino for the South Carolina-based Catawba Indian Nation after petitioning the federal government for decades to build one.

Yesterday, the tribe held a press conference where they unveiled detailed plans and renderings of the casino planned to be built in Kings Mountain, just off I-85.

“The Nation is very thankful for the department’s decision to take this land into trust, enabling us to achieve the promise of self-determination through economic development,” said Catawba Chief William Harris in a statement. “The land is close in proximity to our current land holdings and is our ancestral land in an area that the Catawba people have used and occupied since time immemorial.”

Harris noted that the 195,000 square-foot casino would be paid for by unidentified investors and would be run by Delaware North, which manages sports and entertainment venues in addition to casinos.
