Bike Charlotte Returning This Friday

After two years of “virtual rides,” Bike Charlotte, a citywide celebration of all things cycling, kicks off April 22 with its traditional breakfast ride along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

Government center activities include breakfast, informative speakers about Charlotte’s bike and pedestrian infrastructure and a trail bike demonstration by “Trail Boss” Jeff Lenosky, three-time national trail bike champion and world record holder for the “bunny hop.”

Bike Charlotte events continue through May 8 and include organized rides, skills clinics, mountain bike rides, bike bingo, and more, with an emphasis on fun and making cycling approachable for all. See the schedule on the Bike Charlotte calendar of events.

“The past few years, we talked virtually about the best places to ride, where to ride safely and how to ride,” says Will Washam, bicycle program coordinator for the City of Charlotte. “Now we can all ride together!”

Bike Charlotte promotes the everyday use of bicycles for transportation, recreation, and discovery and has been instrumental in improving Charlotte’s bicycle infrastructure and in planning for a better biking future. Highlights include:

  • The Queen City now has more than 120 miles of paved, on-road bike lanes, with another 43 miles expected during the next five years.
  • An uptown “cycle track” of protected bike lanes will open in mid-April, connecting Little Sugar Creek in Midtown to Irwin Creek in West End.
  • The 6th Street Cycle Track will connect cyclists directly to more than 40 miles of greenways and bike lanes.
  • Mecklenburg County’s greenway system now stretches 62 miles, with another 12 miles to be finished this year.

“A lot of people have taken up biking during the pandemic and want to do more,” says Washam. “Bike Charlotte is the perfect opportunity for new riders to ride alongside more experienced riders and find out about all the great riding spots in Charlotte.”

The North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (NCRLA), the voice of North Carolina’s restaurant, foodservice and lodging industry, hosted its annual 2022 Stars of the Industry awards ceremony last night.

The award recipients were recognized during a ceremony at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club in Durham.

At a time when restaurants, hotels and bars are doing their best to respond to labor shortages, supply chain issues and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stars of the Industry awards afforded North Carolina’s hospitality community a chance to reflect and honor the selfless contributions and stories of inspiration from within the industry. Award recipients were selected based on their exemplary service, leadership, innovation and dedication to the restaurant and lodging industries.

A total of 5 Charlotte hospitality leaders received statewide recognition last night at the 2022 Stars of the Industry Awards, hosted by the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (NCRLA).

  • Vinay Patel, from SREE Hotels, won the Griff and June Glover Award for Distinguished Service for his dedication to the industry as both NCRLA Board Chair and Chair of the Government Affairs Committee. Vinay led the charge on lobbying for NCRLA’s Blueprint leading to PPP deductibility and $500 million in direct grants to hospitality businesses.

  • Tim Goss, from Firehouse Subs, won the Ken Conrad Award for Service for his efforts to help economically distressed areas of Mecklenburg County during the summer of 2021. He partnered with Mecklenburg County Public Health, the Charlotte Police Department, the local YMCA and neighborhood organizations to host several vaccine clinics.

  • Lodging Employee of the Year – Vera Cobbs, Charlotte Marriott SouthPark

It is never too early to start your festival prep. The first and most obvious thing you are going to want to do months out is to purchase your tickets. Some of the more popular festivals can sell out as soon as the lineup is announced, so if there is one that you are dying to attend, make sure you and your crew secure your tickets well in advance. This also goes for accommodations and transportation needs. If you will be flying out of your home state to attend, make sure you secure your plane tickets as soon as you have your festival tickets in hand. The further in advance you purchase plane tickets, the more likely you are to score a great deal. The pro tip here is to check for tickets on a Tuesday afternoon. Charlotte Approves Plans For New 250 Foot Tower – Soon To Be Tallest in SouthPark

The Charlotte City Council has just given the final approval t o Lincoln Harris to build the largest tower in SouthPark.

The new 250 foot tall complex will be built directly on top of the Regal Cinema movie theater, to include roughly 250,000 square feet of office space and 20,000 square feet of retail space.

The initial proposal was for a maximum building height of 275 feet, but due to concerns from community leaders, they reduced the maximum building height to 250 feet in the final and now-approved proposal. As part of the deal, Lincoln Harris also committed to building a “SouthPark Loop” all around Phillips Place.

In spite of the reduction of height, the new building will still become a major focal point for anyone walking or driving through the SouthPark area.

NC Governor Declares This Week as National Volunteer Week

The governor of our state has just declared this week to be ‘National Volunteer Week’, asking all residents to consider volunteering in some form or fashion over the next few days.

“When we work together, we build a stronger state for all,” said Governor Cooper. “I am grateful for all the volunteers across our state and encourage North Carolinians to spend time volunteering. Whether you’re donating to a local food bank, assisting with disaster recovery, giving blood or helping seniors, there are many ways to help out your community.”

A new agency within NC’s Office of The Governor will be helping with this effort – VolunteerNC.

The agency helps those looking to plug into their local communities with volunteering opportunities onsite, outdoors, from home or virtually. Volunteer needs vary across the state from working at a local food bank to helping rebuild homes damaged by severe weather.

Last year, there were over 2.8 million North Carolina volunteers who contributed over 265 million hours of service, meaning 35% of North Carolinians volunteered last year. More than 30% of North Carolinians participated in local groups or organizations and over 50% of North Carolinians donated over $25 to charities.

To determine the most business-friendly small markets in the US, they compared more than 1,300 cities with fewer than 100,000 residents across 18 key metrics. The data set ranges from small business growth rates and accessibility of financing to investor access and labor costs.

After over 1,300 small cities ranked, these were determined to be the top 100 in the nation, including; Morrisville, NC at #11, Greenville, SC at #18, Asheville, NC at #47, Wake Forest, NC at #59, Holly Springs, NC at #61, Salisbury, NC at #71, Apex, NC at #78, Garner, NC at #88, and Fuquay-Varina, NC at #96.
