The spending plan was allocated from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, or ARPA.

NC DMVA Honors 108-year-old NC World War II Veteran

Walter E. Gaskin, Lt. General, USMC Ret., Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NCDMVA) paid tribute to an original Montford Point Marine and World War II Veteran, Cosmas D. Eaglin, Sr, of Fayetteville, NC, with a certificate of appreciation and the Department’s challenge coin. Mr. Eaglin’s family was present for the intimate congratulatory gathering where the 108-year-old veteran was delighted to receive the recognition of his service.

Born January 12, 1915, Eaglin joined the United States Marine Corps when he was 27. He completed training at Camp Montford Point, in Jacksonville, NC, and was one of the first 300 black recruits to break the Marine color barrier after President Franklin Roosevelt issued an Executive Order establishing the Fair Employment Practices Commission in 1941. Eaglin served two years in the Solomon Islands campaign during the Pacific War of World War II. After WWII, Eaglin left the Marine Corps but returned to active-duty service and earned his paratrooper wings once joining the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. He was assigned to Fort Bragg, NC in 1951. He also served two tours in the Vietnam War in the 1960’s.

“When I learned of Mr. Eaglin and his service to our country, I found it truly admirable and an inspiration,” said Gaskin, “As an original Montford Point Marine, he endured unimaginable obstacles in the segregated Marine Corps. Because he was a Marine, I am able to be a Marine. His contributions to the nation and the Marine Corps will be remembered and his legacy will live on for generations to come.”

Eaglin has 6 children, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He and his family have been part of the St. Ann Catholic Church community in Fayetteville for 72 years. NC DMVA Secretary Walter Gaskin, and Eaglin’s beloved family, gathered in the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Fayetteville to honor this man who has never stopped giving to his family, community, and country. We admire his strength, resilience, and honor his service to our country with appreciation for the inspiration he instills in all of us.

Char-Meck Library Giving Away 20,000 Free Laptops Starting Today

This week, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is beginning their MeckTech program by giving away 20,000 refurbished laptops to eligible adults in Mecklenburg County. The program is designed to close the digital divide, making sure everyone has the necessary computer access to meet their educational and informational needs. The laptops come with preloaded applications and hardware and are WiFi enabled, though internet service is not included.

In order to be eligible for the free laptop, applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of Mecklenburg County, have an active email address, have a photo ID with an identification number, and provide proof of a Mecklenburg County address. After all these requirements are met, applicants must also sign a statement confirming they would not have the technology to meet their educational and informational needs otherwise.

Applications to the MeckTech program are available on the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library website starting this morning.

CMPD Asking For Public’s Help In Finding ‘Stabbing Bandits’

Officials with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department are now asking for the public’s help in identifying ‘stabbing bandit’ suspects.

According to an official statement from CMPD, the suspects in question entered the DTLR shoe store on Milton Road yesterday afternoon just after 1pm. After attempting to steal clothing, the suspects were approached by an employee, who was then stabbed.

“( )    On any controlled access roadway having two or more lanes allowing movement in the same direction, a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed. This subsection does not apply to a driver operating a vehicle that is overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or when a driver of a tractor-trailer commercial motor vehicle combination is unable to move into the right lane safely due to other vehicles overtaking or passing his vehicle on the right, or when a driver of a vehicle requiring a commercial drivers license is unable to move into the right lane safely due to a highway grade or other vehicles overtaking or passing his vehicle on the right.

( )        A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be punished by a fine of two hundred dollars or by imprisonment for not more than thirty days, and assessed two points against his motor vehicle operating record as provided in Section 56-1-720, except that a driver of a vehicle requiring a commercial drivers license may not be fined more than fifty dollars and no points may be assessed against his driving record for failing to comply with this section.

SC lawmakers did approve what many call the “slowpoke” bill back in 2021, but that bill only fined violators $25 per offense.

Officials are hoping the new bill, that would significantly increase the financial penalty, and add 2 points to licenses, will have a much greater impact on ‘slowpoke’ drivers across the state.
