How to leave a lasting impression on someone and be unforgettable

Rents in Charlotte Down 0.3% Over Past Month – January 2023 Rental Report

Nationwide rent prices sank another 0.3% in January, according to the latest data from Apartment List.

This marks the fifth consecutive month of negative rent growth, and we are nearing the end of a particularly-slow winter season in which rent prices sank faster than previous years.

For the latest data, see the January Rent Report here. Some highlights include:

  • Rents in Charlotte decreased 0.3% month-over-month in January, compared to a 0.3% decrease nationally.
  • Year-over-year rent growth in Charlotte currently stands at 5.4%, compared to 0.4% at this time last year. Year-over-year growth in Charlotte ranks #20 fastest among the nation’s 100 largest cities. Rents in Charlotte are up by 23.6% since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.
  • Median rents in Charlotte currently stand at $1315 for a 1-bedroom apartment and $1441 for a two-bedroom.

Trio of Friends Brings First Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop Location to Charlotte

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, known for its award-winning, hand-crafted cheese steaks, turkey subs and more, has just opened in Charlotte at 2040 Freeman Park Dr. Capriotti’s brings the Charlotte community its 47-year tradition of slow-roasting whole, all-natural turkeys in-house and hand-pulling them every morning along with other favorites all made with fresh ingredients.

The restaurantserves three sandwiches made from American Wagyu that include the American Wagyu Slaw Be Jo, American Wagyu Cheese Steak and American Wagyu Roast Beef. The Charlotte Capriotti’s will offer a convenient order-ahead option, in addition to third-party delivery services. The new shop will bring 30 new jobs to the Charlotte community.

David Froman was a frequent Capriotti’s diner when he would visit his family in Las Vegas before his move to Charlotte where there were no Capriotti’s locations. That led him to call his friend, Todd Guear, and the duo decided to invest and they opened their first location in Fort Mill, S.C. Now, Froman and Guear are ready to open their second location and first in the Charlotte community. The store will be run by Guear’s childhood friend and local resident Jon Tavernier who will serve as the area manager. As the trio prepares for their Charlotte store, they have plans to bring more locations throughout the city in the coming future.

“We are excited to bring a fun and inviting restaurant to Charlotte where friends and families can come together to enjoy a meal,” said Froman. “There is a true difference in the homemade, premium products that Capriotti’s offers its guests.”

Charlotte Capriotti’s fans can download the CAPAddicts Rewards app on iOS and Android to earn and redeem rewards and score free food. The Charlotte Capriotti’s will offer a convenient order-ahead option, online ordering, and third-party delivery services. Several Charlotte Demonstrations Held Over The Weekend After Death of Tyre Nichols

Yesterday afternoon and evening, 3 separate demonstrations were held to call for justice reform after the body cam footage was released of the beating of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police.

2 of the demonstrations started in Marshall Park in Uptown Charlotte and a 3rd candlelight vigil was held at the Urban League of the Central Carolinas.

In all three Charlotte events, demonstrators continued to call for change in both policing and our justice system.

UNC Charlotte Ranks 4th In The Nation for Online Bachelor’s Degrees

UNC Charlotte has strengthened its reputation as one of the nation’s top providers of online education, rising to No. 4 (tie) on U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 Best Online Bachelor’s Degrees ranking, which was released Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Best Online Bachelor's.jpgThis is the second consecutive year that UNC Charlotte has ranked in the top 10 nationally for its online bachelor’s degree programs, and the University has risen 30 spots over the past three years as its online portfolio supporting working professionals has grown. Charlotte is ranked first in North Carolina, the only university in the state to rank in the top 15.

U.S. News’ metrics for the online undergraduate rankings — which include student engagement, support given to students, and instructor training and credentials — were developed to identify degree completion programs for students who already have some college credit.

U.S. News also recognized three UNC Charlotte master’s disciplines in its Best Online Master’s Degree rankings, which also were released on Jan. 24:

  • Best Online Master’s in Education: No. 23 (tie)
  • Best Online Master’s in Nursing: No. 37 (tie)
  • Best Online Master’s in Engineering: No. 62

The Cato College of Education also was recognized for its master’s specialty in curriculum and instruction, which ranked No. 17 (tie) based on a survey of peer institutions across the country.

“We are pleased to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a national leader in the development of high-quality, affordable online programs for working professionals,” said Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “This further illustrates the work our award-winning faculty and staff have done to streamline and develop online programs since we launched the School of Professional Studies in 2021.”

Charlotte Online, through the School of Professional Studies, provides access to more than 50 online degree programs. All programs are geared toward working adults.

The Belk College of Business began offering a fully online MBA program in August, and two new online degree programs debuted this month, a Master of Science in Mathematics, Math Education concentration and a bachelor’s in professional studies.

U.S. News evaluated more than 1,800 online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for the rankings, the most ever.

According to the publication, while the methodologies are different for each discipline, they all incorporate metrics specific to online learning. Only degree-granting programs that are offered primarily online by regionally accredited institutions are eligible.

This is the latest in a growing number of national rankings for UNC Charlotte.

In November, the University ranked No. 18 in the nation on Newsweek’s student-focused “America’s Top Online Colleges for 2023.” Charlotte was awarded five stars out of five in the report, the highest recognition. Charlotte rose eight spots overall in the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report Best College rankings for undergraduate colleges and universities.

Chester Golf Club Turning Heads in 2023

Chester Golf Club opened in 1971, but the “hidden gem” will turn heads after its fresh polish. In the fall of 2022, Rohan Allwood earned the promotion to Head Golf Professional from his previous role as First Assistant at Chester Golf Club. An avid golfer himself, Rohan holds a PGA certification and has previous experience as Head Golf Professional at several other courses in North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas. He offers lessons for beginner through elite golfers and enjoys hosting tournaments and special fitting events with renowned golf brands.

In December, construction began on the course’s bunker renovation project. Chester Golf Club contracted Environmental Landscaping for the job, which provided excellent results from last winter’s bunker project at sister course, Fort Mill Golf Club.

Chester Golf Club is located in rural Chester County, six miles west of I-77 off of exit 62, only minutes from Charlotte or Columbia. The course, which opened in 1971, was designed by Russell Breeden and is known to many as a hidden gem. The club offers memberships but also offers public tee times. Chester Golf Club is owned and operated by Leroy Springs & Company Inc., a 501(c)3 organization that receives no government funding for its ongoing operations and programs. The golf club falls under the Springs Golf portfolio of local courses.

Charlotte Just Racked Up 3 James Beard Award Semifinal Nominations – Most In The Southeast

The prestigious James Beard Foundation just announced the official semifinal list for their 2023 Restaurant and Chef Awards. Out of all the tens of thousands of restaurants around the country, Charlotte racked up a total of 3 semifinalists among the best of the best – more than any other city in the South East.

The official list includes Leah & Louise‘s chef Greg Collier in the Outstanding Chef category, Counter-‘s chef Sam Hart in the Best Chef in the Southeast category, and Salud Cerveceria in the Outstanding Bar category.

“Congratulations to all our 2023 James Beard Award Semifinalists! This is always an exhilarating moment as we kick off the Awards cycle and recognize the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams across the country,” said Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation in a press release. “After a year of fundamental changes, we look forward to building on the progress made, celebrating those paving a better future for us all—through their talent and craft, service to others, and commitment to a better, more sustainable industry. The finalists will be announced on March 29th, and the awards will be given out to the winners  at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago.

LawnStarter ranked 2023’s Cleanest and Dirtiest Cities in America following one of the trashiest times of the year, the winter holiday season.

They compared 150 of the biggest U.S. cities across four categories, including pollution, living conditions, infrastructure, and consumer satisfaction.

Charlotte came in as the 10th cleanest city in America, just behind Greensboro at #7 and Winston Salem at #5.

Thoroughbred Jump Racing

As mentioned, the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase encompasses competing horses with speed and stamina to complete about four jumps in a three-mile race. With over $200,000 of purse money, jockeys and their horses compete with passion and skills to achieve glory on the racetrack. To make the race even more festive to witness, jockeys wear brightly colored silks while on the run on the classy turf course of Brooklandwood. 

Queen’s Cup Hat Contest

Not only can you witness great horse racing, but you can also participate by showing off your best hat design on the event ground. Annually, before the Queen’s Cup takes its place, attendees prepare using their creative juices to create hand-decorated hats, aiming to win big prizes. If you enjoy styling your own hat, this event can be a great one to join in. 

There are four categories in the Queen’s Cup Hat Content: Men, Women, Children, and the new addition, Most Royal. What makes the Most Royal different is you don’t have to decorate the hat on your own as you use store-bought extravagant styled hats to join the contest.

Silver Jubilee Tailgate Contest

If you love competition and creativity, this activity is incredibly a must-try. The tailgate contest allows you to create elegant Silver Jubilee-themed tailgates. All you have to do is prepare varying tailgate ideas with delicious snacks and fun drinks. Whatever you are to create, you are free to use as many decorative pieces as you have, turn your tailgate into an elegant space with a table set up, and wait for the judging to take place around noon.

2. Know the Dos and Don’ts

To ensure safety and fun on race day, the Queen’s Cup prepares guidelines and restrictions you must follow to ensure the utmost experience. These guidelines not only ensure a safe environment but also protect the event’s horses and jockeys.

  • Your vehicle must meet the size requirements for the tailgate area.
  • Have your credential badge and parking pass ready for the checkpoint.
  • Find alternative routes in advance should there be traffic.
  • Utmost respect and courtesy are a must for people around you.

Don’ts

  • Tents and standing umbrellas are not allowed.
  • Loud music and overcrowded tailgate space are prohibited.
  • Don’t touch the horses.
  • The use of flags, drones, balloons, and similar materials is not allowed.
  • Grills, fryers, and smoking under the tents are prohibited.
