Citigroup has just announced plans to launch a major expansion here in Charlotte, creating 510 new jobs and investing $16.1 million in a new facility.

The expansion will grow the company’s local presence in areas including personal banking, finance, and marketing.

“Citi’s decision makes clear once again that Charlotte is one of the nation’s top financial centers,” said Governor Josh Stein in a press release. “North Carolina offers a specialized and highly skilled workforce along with a friendly business climate. Our state will continue to invest in the education and workforce programs that keep North Carolina one of the best places to do business.”  

The average salary for the new positions is expected to be $131,832—well above Mecklenburg County’s average wage of $86,830. The added roles are projected to generate an annual payroll impact of more than $65 million for the region.

To support the project, the North Carolina Economic Investment Committee approved a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) for Citigroup Technology, Inc. The 10-year grant could reimburse the company up to $8.9 million, contingent on job creation and investment milestones.

State officials estimate the project will contribute more than $2.7 billion to North Carolina’s economy during the grant period.

Travelers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport no longer need to remove their shoes during TSA screening, federal officials announced this week. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has just eliminated the long-standing rule in an effort to simplify the checkpoint process and reduce wait times.

TSA Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the change, noting it will improve traveler experience without compromising security. Passengers will still be required to complete identity verification, Secure Flight vetting, and other existing screening procedures.

“Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest effort DHS is implementing to modernize and enhance traveler experience across our nation’s airports,” said Noem in a press release. “We expect this change will drastically decrease passenger wait times at our TSA checkpoints, leading to a more pleasant and efficient passenger experience. As always, security remains our top priority. Thanks to our cutting-edge technological advancements and multi-layered security approach, we are confident we can implement this change while maintaining the highest security standards. This initiative is just one of many the Trump administration is pursuing to usher in the President’s vision for a new Golden Age of American travel.”

The update is part of TSA’s broader “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” initiative, which also offers benefits to military families, including TSA PreCheck discounts and expedited screening access.

This policy change follows the recent rollout of REAL ID enforcement at airport checkpoints, which has achieved a 94% compliance rate nationwide. TSA officials say both measures support a more efficient and secure air travel system.

Residents across the Charlotte region may hear nuclear sirens today as part of a routine emergency alert system test. Duke Energy and county emergency officials will conduct quarterly testing near two nuclear plants between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9.

The test will involve 156 outdoor sirens. Specifically, 89 sirens near the Catawba Nuclear Station in York, South Carolina, and 67 near the McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville, North Carolina, will sound for 5 to 30 seconds each.

To prepare for potential emergencies, Carolina residents can download the Emergency Manager app and use the “Know Your Zone” tool to identify their emergency zone based on location.

During an actual emergency, officials may advise residents to shelter in place. Key steps include closing windows and doors, turning off HVAC systems, staying in interior rooms, and conserving phone battery.

Authorities remind the public to stay calm, follow official guidance, and monitor reliable news sources during any emergency.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will renumber its three existing runways between May and September 2026 to prepare for a new 10,000-foot Fourth Parallel Runway opening in fall 2027. The changes are required to meet FAA safety standards and to avoid confusion as CLT becomes one of the few airports with more than three same-direction runways.

Currently, CLT uses Runways 18R-36L, 18C-36C, and 18L-36R. With the addition of the new runway, renumbering will adjust magnetic headings and designations. The updated layout will include:

• 18R-36L → 1L-19R

• 18C-36C → 1R-19L

• 18L-36R → 18-36

• New Runway → 1C-19C

Crews will repaint massive runway numbers and replace over 120 markings and signs. The updates must align with aviation charts, which are revised every 56 days.

Runway numbers reflect compass headings and are essential for pilot navigation, especially during low visibility. “It is a requirement for precision runways at commercial airports like CLT and assists pilots during poor weather and limited visibility,” said Airport Planning Project Coordinator Trent Sellers in a press release.

A 5th runway is currently drawn on the current Airport Layout Plan, to be constructed on land east of the Sullenberger Aviation Museum, but it’s unclear when construction might start on it, according to airport officials.
