Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Reaches South Carolina, Alarming Agriculture Experts

Clemson University has confirmed the first detection of the invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) in South Carolina. The Department of Plant Industry identified the pest in both Greenville and Seneca.

The insect, native to Asia, poses a serious threat to agricultural and forestry industries. It feeds on grapes, fruit trees, and hardwoods, and has already spread to at least 18 other states, including North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Although the spotted lanternfly does not harm humans or animals directly, it can cause major damage to crops and native vegetation. Officials stress that early detection is key to limiting economic and environmental impacts.

The lanternfly was first identified in the U.S. in 2014 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Since then, it has steadily expanded its range across the eastern states.

Clemson researchers noted that while the invasive insect may seem less alarming than more notorious invasive species, its ability to spread rapidly across new environments makes it a significant concern.

Clemson officials are working with state and federal agencies to monitor and manage the infestation. The effort may include accessing private property for inspections and treatment.

Residents are urged to help by looking for signs of the pest and reporting sightings here.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles Announces Bid Re-Election

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles will officially file for re-election on Wednesday, July 16 at noon, according to an announcement released Monday.

Lyles, first elected in 2017, is seeking a fifth term in office. During her tenure, Lyles has primarily focused on ongoing initiatives related to housing, infrastructure, and economic development.

“Charlotte is a city of opportunity, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made,” said Mayor Lyles in a press statement. “From expanding affordable housing to improving public safety and investing in our infrastructure, we are delivering real results. But there is still work to do—and I’m ready to keep doing it.”

The filing will take place at the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections, located at 741 Kenilworth Avenue in Charlotte.

Lake Norman Enters New Era After Historic Split from Marine Commission

Lincoln County commissioners have voted to withdraw from the Lake Norman Marine Commission (LNMC), citing frustration with how the agency handled safety and regulatory matters. The decision takes effect June 30 and ends the joint agreement authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1969.

Commissioner Bud Cesna confirmed that a new nine-member panel will replace the current commission. The revised structure includes two representatives each from Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Iredell, and Catawba counties, along with one at-large representative.

Lincoln County leaders voiced concerns over the LNMC’s management, including its enforcement of boating safety. LNMC currently oversees lake-wide responsibilities such as navigational aids, channel markers, and law enforcement coordination. Executive Director David Scott warned that eliminating these services could compromise safety across Lake Norman.

In recent years, the LNMC implemented new rules for charter and rental boats, requiring safety inspections and licensed captains. Despite some opposition, officials credit the regulations with reducing boat-related fatalities. Only one death occurred last summer—a decline attributed to the commission’s enforcement efforts.

The transition leaves each county responsible for its own boating safety and enforcement unless new shared agreements are adopted.

All Eyes on Carolina: Key Reasons the Panthers Could Surprise This Season

The Carolina Panthers have had a rough stretch in recent years, but 2025 might finally flip the script. With a new season on the horizon, the buzz around Charlotte is getting louder and for good reason.

A favorable schedule, coaching stability, and promising young talent have sparked cautious optimism. Some fans are even pointing to quirky history as a sign: in both 2003 and 2015, the Panthers started the season with a win over the Jaguars and made it all the way to the Super Bowl. Guess who they’re playing in Week 1 this year? Jacksonville.

While history isn’t destiny, there are concrete reasons this year’s Panthers could be different. Here’s a closer look at the team’s upside and the matchups that could make this a season to remember.

Coaching Stability Signals Progress

After years of coaching turnover, Carolina heads into 2025 with something rare: consistency. Dave Canales returns for his second season as head coach, and this stability matters.

Known for his offensive schemes and quarterback development, Canales now has a full offseason to install his system. His presence gives the offense a foundation it has lacked in years past. This continuity also builds trust throughout the roster.

Bryce Young enters his third year with the same playbook and voice in his ear. That’s a big deal for a quarterback looking to make a leap. That kind of continuity is already drawing attention, not just from fans, but across early NFL betting insights. Analysts are watching how coaching stability could drive performance in 2025.

New Weapons on Offense

Carolina’s offense looks far more dynamic heading into 2025. Bryce Young will benefit from better protection and two intriguing pass catchers: rookie Tetairoa McMillan and second-year standout Xavier Legette.

McMillan, the team’s No. 8 overall pick, brings size and precision to the passing game. His red-zone ability could be the difference-maker this unit has lacked.

The offensive line, which saw multiple centers take snaps last year, returns a group that has now played together. That cohesion could make a big difference for both the run game and pass protection. In a league where chemistry matters, that’s a major plus.

Defensive Reinforcements in Key Spots

The Panthers didn’t ignore defense this offseason. After parting ways with Brian Burns and getting limited production from Jadeveon Clowney and D.J. Wonnum, they needed help.

Carolina addressed this by drafting two high-upside edge rushers: Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen. Both players bring burst and depth, and both are expected to see significant snaps early.

In the secondary, Jaycee Horn remains the anchor. The team also added safety Tre’von Moehrig to bolster coverage downfield, though depth at the position is still a concern. The defensive unit doesn’t need to be elite, but moving into the league’s top 20 could be enough to keep the team competitive week to week.

Navigating the Panthers’ 2025 Schedule

The Carolina Panthers’ 2025 schedule presents both challenges and opportunities that could shape their season from the very first week.

A Favorable Early Schedule Can Build Momentum

One of the most encouraging parts of the 2025 season is the early schedule. In the first six weeks, the Panthers face the Jaguars, Cardinals, Falcons, and Patriots. These teams struggled in 2024. Winning three or even four of those games is realistic, and a strong start could shift the tone for the entire year.

A key matchup in Week 2 against Arizona will offer an early litmus test. The Cardinals’ Marvin Harrison Jr. has emerged as one of the NFL’s most dynamic young receivers. How Carolina’s secondary handles him could reveal a lot about the defense’s growth.

Weeks 5 and 6 bring more difficult opponents: the Dolphins and Cowboys. Still, if the Panthers can hit the midpoint of the season at .500 or better, they’ll be in the playoff conversation.

Tougher Midseason Stretch Will Test Grit

Things get more complicated in the middle of the schedule. The Panthers face the Jets, Bills, Packers, Saints, Falcons, and 49ers in a six-week gauntlet that could make or break their season. Buffalo and San Francisco are clear Super Bowl contenders. Both have the kind of defenses that can disrupt rhythm.

Still, this part of the schedule offers valuable measuring-stick games. Can Carolina slow down Christian McCaffrey on Monday Night Football? Can they compete in the cold against Green Bay in late October? These are the kinds of questions that will tell fans and analysts whether this team is ready to take the next step.

Late-Season Schedule Could Keep Them in Contention

The Panthers close the year with matchups against the Saints, Rams, Buccaneers (twice), and Seahawks. The Rams, now led by Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, will be a real challenge. That said, the rest of that group offers winnable games.

If Carolina can split with Tampa Bay and take care of business against the Saints and Seahawks, a .500 finish isn’t out of the question. In the wide-open NFC South, that might be enough to fight for a playoff spot.

What Sports Analysts Are Saying

According to NFL betting predictions and preseason NFL betting insights, Carolina is still an underdog in the broader NFC picture. That said, some experts are taking notice. The team’s offseason continuity, especially on offence, should not be underestimated.

The wide receiver group has improved, the offensive line has settled in, and the coaching staff has had time to develop relationships. For fans tracking NFL betting news, this kind of context matters. Even though the Panthers aren’t a favorite in most futures markets, the foundation is there.

For those interested in monitoring matchups, trends, and stats throughout the season, FanDuel Sportsbook offers real-time insights and odds on every NFL game, including Panthers matchups. While betting should always be approached responsibly, it’s a helpful way to engage more deeply with each week’s action.

Carolina Might Surprise in 2025

The Carolina Panthers enter the 2025 season with a favorable early schedule, facing seven consecutive games against teams that missed the 2024 playoffs. Coaching stability also plays a key role this year, as Dave Canales returns for his second season. Rookies like Tetairoa McMillan bring fresh talent and energy to the roster.

The Panthers are coming into this season motivated by their underdog status. Having not reached a .500 record in years, there is a real hunger throughout the team to turn that trend around.

This isn’t the 2015 Panthers. No one should expect a 15-1 season, but for a team that’s struggled with identity, consistency, and performance, 2025 offers a rare blend of opportunity and upside.

North Carolina Was Just Named CNBC’s #1 State in America for Business

For the third time in four years, North Carolina has been named America’s #1 State for Business by CNBC. The rankings evaluated all 50 states across ten categories of competitiveness. North Carolina earned 1,614 out of a possible 2,500 points, outperforming all other states.

The state ranked especially high in the Economy, Workforce, and Business Friendliness categories. CNBC’s evaluation system assigns category weights based on how often states promote them as advantages for attracting business.

“Our people, state’s business climate, top research universities and excellent community college system, infrastructure, and high quality of life help both companies and workers thrive,” said Governor Stein in a press release.

North Carolina’s strong performance follows a year of economic expansion. Since January, the state has announced business projects expected to generate nearly $17 billion in new capital investment. These developments are projected to create more than 20,000 new jobs across the state.

A key sector driving growth is clean energy. More than 100,000 residents now work in the clean energy economy, making North Carolina a national leader in the field.

In March, a new executive order created the Council on Workforce and Apprenticeships, a bipartisan body tasked with improving workforce development. The council’s first report outlined 11 goals to help more residents access good jobs and build strong careers.

Lawmakers also passed Senate Bill 124 this year, reducing the number of state jobs that require a four-year college degree. The change is expected to widen access to public employment opportunities.

Beyond business and workforce development, the state launched the “Rediscover the Unforgettable” tourism initiative in partnership with Visit NC. The campaign encourages travelers to explore western North Carolina.

Additionally, the $55 million Western North Carolina Small Business Initiative, backed by the Dogwood Health Trust and the Duke Endowment, provided grants to more than 2,000 local businesses.

With continued investment in jobs, education, and innovation, North Carolina remains positioned as a national leader in economic competitiveness.

Charlotte’s New $50.7 Million Gateway Bridge Project Begins With I-85 Lane Closures

via Charlotte

Charlotte DOT crews are about to begin construction on a major new $50.7 million bridge project in Charlotte’s University City area. The new signature entrance into our city will feature “CHARLOTTE” in blazen letters and and Queen Charlotte crown emblems on both ends, according to a press release from city officials.

The bridge will connect Research Drive and J.W. Clay Boulevard – the bridge will connect directly to the LYNX Blue Line’s J.W. Clay station and two planned greenways: Doby Creek and Barton Creek.

Crews from Mooresville-based Dane Construction will begin by installing protective concrete barriers, requiring overnight closures along I-85 between Mallard Creek Church Road and Harris Boulevard:

  • Monday, July 14 (9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Tuesday): I-85 South left lane closed

  • Tuesday, July 15 (9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Wednesday): I-85 North left lane closed

  • Wednesday, July 16 (9 p.m. – 6 a.m. Thursday): Additional closures in both directions

After barrier installation, crews will work around the clock for two months to construct the interior bridge support, known as the “bent.” Once complete, they’ll build the bridge superstructure, including girders, beams, deck, and railing.

Planning for the bridge began in 2017, but the timeline extended due to utility relocation delays. The city expects the bridge to open in 2028.

First Measles Case Since 2024 Confirmed in South Carolina

Health officials have confirmed South Carolina’s first measles case since September 2024. The case involves an unvaccinated Upstate resident who was exposed during international travel.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH), the individual had no prior immunity and is currently isolating at home. Officials said the person was not contagious during travel and poses no ongoing public threat.

DPH confirmed the case after receiving positive test results from its state-certified public health lab. A contact investigation is underway, and individuals who may have been exposed are being notified.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or breathes. It can remain in the air for up to two hours and can lead to serious complications, including hospitalization or death.

Initial symptoms include fever, cough, and runny nose, followed by a rash that usually lasts five to six days. People with measles should stay home from work or school for four days after the rash appears.

Health officials stress that vaccination remains the most effective prevention. The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective and is typically given in two doses—first at 12–15 months, and again at 4–6 years of age.

“It is proven that the best way to prevent measles is by vaccination. I strongly encourage everyone to review their immunization records to make sure they are up to date on all vaccinations and to talk with their health care provider about the benefits and risks of getting vaccinated,” said SC State Epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell in a press release.

Those traveling internationally, especially with infants or young children, should consult a health care provider about early or updated MMR vaccination. DPH advises that certain individuals, such as pregnant people or those with compromised immune systems, may need specific guidance before receiving the vaccine.

Charlotte Café Becomes First in America To Use Watermelon Seed Milk

0

Charlotte’s own Wildroots Coffee (the 70s-themed coffee shops on Morehead and Church Sts), just created the first ever “watermelon seed milk”. They will now also be the first coffee shop in the country to use “MILKish” in their lattes and other coffee drinks.

Founded by Jasmine Koch, Wildroots is now offering the watermelon-seed-based milk option at both of their Charlotte locations.

According to Wildroots, “MILKish is smooth, creamy, and surprisingly similar to almond milk in flavor, minus the water waste (watermelon seeds require 99% less water to grow.) It’s available in Original and unsweetened Vanilla, both with 0g sugar.”

Do you think “plant-based milks” are going a little too far?
