Huntersville’s Ensemble Health Partners Just Announced New Location And Addition of 120 New Jobs

Huntersville’s new 674-acre development off Gilead Road is about to get its biggest tenant to date. Ensemble Health Partners is about to move into a 30,870-square-foot space in the park’s Alexander Building next month and will be hiring an additional 120 full time employees in the process.

The health care consulting company was originally founded in Huntersville in 2014 with just 4 employees – by July of this year, they will have over 500.

“We are excited about the announcement of continued growth of Ensemble Health Partners. We wish the company further success and look forward to their continued prosperity in the town,” said Ryan McDaniels, Executive Director of Lake Norman Economic Development in a recent interview. “We are delighted that Ensemble Health Partners will continue to expand in Huntersville.”

The Goodyear Arts Program Is About To Move Into A New Uptown Building

The Goodyear Arts Program, which has given local artists one month each to do whatever they wanted to the old Goodyear building at the edge of Uptown, is about expand and change locations.

They’ll be moving across center city to the old Comedy Zone building at 516 N. College Street;

The artist residencies will also change to two months, instead of 1 month, and it will now be accepting writers, filmmakers, and photographers in addition to their current options of visual artists, dancers, thespians, and musicians as residents.

The project’s original video shows just how successful the project has already been in expanding the creative atmosphere of our city;

The new and improved Goodyear Arts Program at 516 N. College St. will kick off on July 1 and and run until the end of 2016…for now.

A midsummer preview party, and other arts events, are also planned for the space, you can check out more info and event info on their website here.

Charlotte’s homegrown GoodMortgage.com was just acquired by Virginia-based First Guarantee Mortgage Corporation, but this is actually good news for the Queen City.

FGMC will be keeping the GoodMortgage.com brand in tact, leaving the headquarters in Charlotte, and expanding their reach from 18 states to as many as 40 states.

The newly acquired and better resourced company will also be hiring at least 200 new employees in Charlotte over the next 12 to 18 months – they currently employ about 75 in their 3325 S. Tryon St. offices.

FGMC’s press release indicates why they were initially attracted to the company, “goodmortgage.com is one of the early pioneers in the build out and development of the “online” mortgage-lending platform. McDonald’s Employee Arrested After Her Pie Fight Went Viral (Video)

A 25-year-old woman in Chester County was just arrested for attacking a coworker after a dispute over pies in a McDonalds just south of Charlotte.

Joslyn Cecile Steed and her McDonald’s coworker were arguing over how to handle the remaining apple pies when Steed suddenly struck her coworker in the face and started to brawl at the McDonald’s on the J A Cochran Bypass in Chester County.

The whole fight was captured on a phone camera that police are now using as evidence to prosecute Steed.

The video of the fight already has over 173,000 views;

The Festival of Food Trucks Is About To Fill The Streets of Downtown Mooresville

The monthly Festival of Food Trucks is returning to downtown Mooresville tomorrow, offering some of the region’s most popular food vendors, including; Bebo’s American Bistro, The Big Woodie, FireGrill, KOfoodtruck, Lobster Dogs-Food Truck, OooWee BBQ, Papi Queso Food Truck, Sal’s Roadside Eatery, Smokey J’s BBQ, Sophie’s Soul Food, and Lake Norman Brewing Company will be set up to provide plenty of local craft beer.

There will also be live music, tons of games, and plenty of other local vendors and activities set up all along main street tomorrow evening from 5-8 p.m. Main Street from Moore Ave to Iredell Ave will be closed for the event so bring a chair.

#4 Annual Meck Dec Day commemoration

Friday, May 20th, 2016: At 12 p.m., at the square (Trade and Tryon) Politicians and some celebrities will be giving addresses and there will be a reading of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence followed by traditional toasts with muskets and cannon fire. There will be a dedication of a new marker in Settler’s Cemetery in memory of Revolutionary War patriot Ephraim Brevard. Interpreters will mingle with the crowd and hand out Meck Dec copies while the soldiers play music and march up and down. Free.

#5 Charlotte Museum of History annual celebration

Saturday, May 21st, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive. Celebrate the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence and Resolves! There will be crafts for the kids, a free tour of the Hezekiah Alexander Home Site, and several city officials on hand – and there will be plenty of free cake and lemonade. Free.

#6 Sesame Street Live

From May 20th through May 22nd, your favorite puppets will be in the Queen City.

NC House About To Vote To Cancel The i77 Toll Roads With Overwhelming Support

North Carolina HB-954 is about to be voted on in the NC House, a new bill that would essentially cancel the i77 Toll Road contract. Section 1 of the bill starts off by saying;

“In a manner consistent with the terms of the 7 Comprehensive Agreement, the Department of Transportation shall terminate the Comprehensive 8 Agreement for the I-77 HOT Lanes project in Mecklenburg and Iredell Counties…”

The Cornelius Town Board has just shown their support for HB-954 by voting 5-0 in support of it at their recent meeting. Anti-toll advocates are now saying that the bill now stands a very good chance of passing its initial vote in Raleigh.

“The word we are hearing is that HB-954 has a 5:1 majority in the House GOP caucus. That alone should get the bill out of committee and through the House…” commented Kurt Naas of the group ‘Widen I77‘.

Charlotte Stories recently created a petition in support of HB-954 that received over 2,000 signatures from Charlotte area residents, we sent the entire petition to every representative in the NC House and Senate – here are screenshots of the pages that they received;

Another very active anti-toll road group also created a petition on Change.org that has received over 1,300 signatures. You can follow all of their updates on their Facebook page here.

There are now over 22 direct sponsors of the bill, and an estimated 51 supporters – it only needs 61 votes to pass the NC house, so they will need some more bi-partisan support to get through the House.

The NC House is expected to vote on HB-954 sometime within the next 2 weeks. If it passes, it will move on to the Senate, then to the Governor’s desk.

Fort Mill Schools Keeping Current Bathroom Policy In Spite Of Obama Administration’s New Directives

Fort Mill schools Superintendent Chuck Epps has stated that their schools will not change their current bathroom policy of working on an individual basis with students who have identified themselves as transgender and their parents.

According to the superintendent, transgender students have been able to use an alternate restroom, such as a nurse’s restroom or a faculty restroom, as long as the schools also offer this option to their non-transgender peers.

Fort Mill’s two high schools currently have ‘a few’ students who identify as transgender, and the school district’s leaders have been told that their current policy of offering alternative bathrooms is still legal.

The Obama administration’s letter stipulates that schools “may not require transgender students to use facilities inconsistent with their gender identity or to use individual-user facilities when other students are not required to do so.”

Fort Mill school district leaders now view the letter as guidance, and not necessarily a forced mandate, although schools that do not abide by the letter could face a loss of federal aid, according to federal officials.

Charlotte About To Re-Develop Massive 17-Acre Section of Uptown

Mecklenburg County is now planning to re-develop the former African-American neighborhood of Brooklyn Village in Uptown Charlotte’s Second Ward.

The city is now in talks with 3 major development companies to see who can come up with the best proposal.

Second Ward’s historically African-American Brooklyn Village was demolished in the 1960s in a wave of “urban renewal,” and is now largely dominated by the city’s government quarter, sterile municipal buildings, empty plazas, and the largely unused Marshall Park.

Now Conformity Corporation, CitiSculpt, and Crescent Communities are competing to who can secure the deal with the city in one of the largest re-development projects in decades.

The city will be meeting with the 3 companies to listen to their formal proposal at a special meeting on May 19th.

Plan #1 – Conformity Corp.

The Conformity Corp’s plan includes taller buildings and more overall open space. It’s more focused on superior design features and simple and inviting pedestrian crossings.

1,187,000 square feet of residential (51%)

680,700 square feet of office (29%)

185,500 square feet of hotels (8%)

3,700 square feet of cultural (0.16%)

1.77+ acres open space

2,312 parking spaces

Plan #2 – CitiSculpt

The Citisculpt plan has a much lower profile with more overall square feet of development and much more residential.

560,000 square feet of office

222,000 square feet of hotels

93,000 square feet of retail

Plan #3 – Crescent Communities

Crescent Communities’ vision is to create a more mixed-income development including 650 market-rate apartments, 200,000 square feet of office space, 160 affordable rental units and 65 mixed-income, as well as for-sale townhouses. They were not as specific in terms of actual square footage or each sector.
