clown-arrest-indian-trailA man was just arrested in Indian Trail for carrying a hatchet around while dressed as a clown.

Union County police were called to the Wilco convenience store on Chamber Drive this past Sunday evening at around 5pm.

The man was described wearing dark clothing and clown paint on his face. He was gone when police arrived, but a few hour later, they found 20 year old Travis Pressley down the street matching the description. When they searched him, they found marijuana, a pipe, and a hatchet in his backpack.

Officers charged Travis for second-degree trespassing, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

With all the strange clown incidents happening around the country, it’s more important than ever to be on the lookout for anything that might appear strange.

Charlotte Gun Sales Spike Amidst Political Uncertainty and Recent Violence

0

the-range-at-lake-normanOver the past month, Charlotte witnessed some of the worst rioting in the city’s history, and South Carolina saw yet another school shooting. With perceived threats of violence at all-time highs (largely due to the media), and citizens worried about possible new regulations and restrictions, gun sales are now at an all time high.

We spoke with Brian Sisson, the owner of The Range at Lake Norman and The Range at Ballantyne to find out what trends he is noticing.

“We’ve seen a 38% increase in concealed carry class sign-ups as well as a 21% percent increase in Gun Sales over the past 6 months alone.” He likes to talk to new customers to find out why they want more training and new tools – this year, he’s noticed Charlotte residents are looking for an increased level of self defense. “Protection is the main factor for most people”.

The trainers at The Range have a much more hands-on approach when compared to other gun ranges. “We concentrate on the new shooter. We teach them how to shoot a firearm, but we go much farther. We teach them how to own, store, carry, and use that firearm if confronted with a threat or in a self-defense situation. We value new shooters to the shooting sports, to ensure they learn proper rules and techniques.”

Both The Range at Lake Norman and The Range at Ballantyne are currently offering their concealed carry class for $150, which also includes a 30 day range membership after taking the class.

Charlotte’s Jails Have Seen a 39% Reduction in Inmates Since 2008

Charlotte Jail

In a surprisingly positive trend, Charlotte’s inmate population has dropped by 39% since 2008 (the average daily population went from 2,734 down to 1,661), while over the same period of time, the city’s population increased by about 12.6%.

This inmate reduction is mostly due to the reduction in crime we’ve seen over the past several years. Since 2008, the city has seen an overall reduction in crime by about 25%, including both violent crime, and property crime. Some of the biggest factors that have influenced the reduction include; hiring 125 new officers, recruiting veteran officers from other districts, and the implementation of new initiatives.

The most successful of these initiative has been the Gang Alternative Principles Program, which over seven years, has provided anger management and life-skills and leadership training to almost 700 youth. The program is managed by the nonprofit Charlotte Community Services Association and is housed out of Charlotte’s First Baptist Church-West.

3 Dead and Countless Injured After Hurricane Matthew Wreaked Havoc On North Carolina

As Hurricane Matthew swept higher and more inland than previously anticipated, it’s punishing effects were felt along most of North Carolina’s coast.

So far, three people are dead and countless more injured as hundreds of water rescues continue throughout our state’s eastern most counties.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory told the press this afternoon that one person died in Sampson County after their vehicle hydroplaned in heavy rain. Two others were killed in Bladen County when their vehicle became submerged.

“This is a very, very serious and deadly storm,” McCrory remarked.

“I cannot stress how serious an issue this hurricane could cause to North Carolina, not only in damaging structures but also risking human life,” Hurricane Matthew “did downgrade in the wind, but it upgraded into the volume of water,” McCrory commented. “And water can kill, along with continued high winds. … We still have serious concerns on the beaches. But most of our concerns right now are inland, where we’re going to have surges on the major rivers coming into North Carolina, which could cause some serious, serious damage.”

McRory noted that “it’s storms like these that have caused the most damage and loss of life. This (storm) has the potential for North Carolina to see the worst flooding since Hurricane Floyd.”

State officials now say emergency responders have conducted at least 42 water rescues from cars and homes in Fayetteville, according to The News & Observer.

As the hurricane inundates an already saturated state, authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and to stay on top of warnings.

According to North Carolina Public Works, 54 shelters are open, with more than 777 North Carolinians now sheltered.

Over the past 24 hours, Hurricane Matthew has straightened out its trajectory, causing President Obama to issue a national emergency for our state. The storm is now expected to continue to hug the Carolina coast up through much of North Carolina, then swing back out to sea after passing by Wilmington.

FEMA just released this statement:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal emergency aid has been made available to the State of North Carolina to supplement state, tribal, and local response efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Matthew beginning on October 4, 2016, and continuing.

The President’s action authorizes FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts that have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the counties of Alamance, Anson, Beaufort, Bertie, Bladen, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Caswell, Chatham, Chowan, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Dare, Davidson, Davie, Duplin, Durham, Edgecombe, Forsyth, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Greene, Guilford, Halifax, Harnett, Hertford, Hoke, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lee, Lenoir, Martin, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, New Hanover, Northampton, Onslow, Orange, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Person, Pitt, Randolph, Richmond, Robeson, Rockingham, Sampson, Scotland, Stokes, Surry, Tyrrell, Vance, Wake, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wilson, and Yadkin.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to provide emergency protective measures (Category B), limited to direct federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program at 75 percent federal funding. Elizabeth Turner has been named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal response operations in the affected area. Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further evaluation.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory also expanded our state of emergency to include all 100 counties in the Tar Heel State (the initial declaration included 66 counties in eastern and central North Carolina).

Several major attractions are now being shut down ahead of Matthew. Officials at Carowinds said it would not be holding its SCarowinds nighttime Halloween event due to the storm. NASCAR’s Bank of America 500 race in Concord will still run tomorrow afternoon and evening, but race organizers are closely monitoring the storm’s progress to see if the event will have to be canceled.

The US National Hurricane Center is recommending that North Carolina residents have their disaster emergency kits stocked and readily accessible in case of extended flash flooding or downed power lines.

We will be updating this article as we receive new information.

Rock Hill Students Honor Boy That Was Killed in SC Shooting

0

This past afternoon, a funeral for 6-year-old Jacob Hall was took place in Townville, South Carolina.

Finley Road Elementary School in Rock Hill, South Carolina, is over 120 miles away from the school where the shooting occurred, but students and teachers still wanted to give Jacob’s family some special superhero support.

Jacob was shot when police say a teenage student decided to opened fire last week on a playground outside of Townville Elementary School in Anderson County (just southwest of Greenville).

Many participants in today’s sorrowful event wore superhero costumes because his mother wanted people to focus on Jacob and his love for superheroes instead of the tragedy. His mother said Jacob was buried in a Batman costume because that was his favorite superhero.

Finley Road Elementary School took group pictures of their costumes and posted them online using the hashtags #SuperheroesForJacob and #PrayersForJacob.
