Charlotte’s First Acai Bowl Craze

Just minutes from the Panther’s Stadium, tucked in a parking lot on South College is a small food truck that packs a punch. Rico’s Acai pronounced “ah-sah-ee” serves Acai bowls all day every day in the queen city!

Acai is a super fruit mostly native to Brazil and Trinidad, grows like a slender palm tree, and tastes like a dark berry that collided with chocolate.

Proven to contain over 10 times more antioxidant’s than red grapes, the trendy new super food is also low in sugar.

Rico’s Acai has two locations now; one off of South College which is the food truck spot and the other at 7th Street Public Market.

My personal favorite has been the Rainbow Bowl – it’s turned into a constant craving!

The Rainbow Bowl has Granola, Banana, Blueberries, Pineapple, Strawberries and Raspberries all on top of the Acai base. Skip out on the burger and try an Acai bowl for lunch. You can even add Nutella and coconut to make it seem as if you had a legit dessert at the same time. The small is quite filling while the large is perfect for sharing.

Cooler temp’s right around the corner will definitely not deter me from swiping my debit card for a bowl that my body gives a high five.

If you haven’t been to Rico’s yet, get there!

Governor Pat McCrory Officially Concedes The Election To Roy Cooper (Video)

0

After several weeks of recounts and voter fraud accusations, the McCrory campaign has just conceded the 2016 NC Governor’s Election to attorney general Roy Cooper.

In a video uploaded to Twitter and Youtube, the current governor states, “despite continued questions that should be answered regarding the voting process, I personally believe that the majority of our citizens have spoken, and we now should everything we can to support the 75th governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper.”

According to the most recent NC Governor election results, Roy Cooper received 2,309,190 votes (49.02%), Pat McCrory received 2,298,927 votes (48.80%), and Lon Cecil received 102,986 votes (2.19%). In Mecklenburg county, the results were 297,129 for Cooper (63.27%), 160,501 for McCrory (34.18%), and 11,975 for Cecil (2.55%).

Roy Cooper, a Democrat, will now control the top position in our state, while Republicans will maintain super majorities in both NC legislative chambers.

McCrory is the only North Carolina governor to lose their first re-election bid. He lost much of his support after signing and continuing to support, the i77 toll road contract and HB2.

How do you feel about Roy Cooper becoming our next Governor?

Concord and Kannapolis Spending $44 Million to Build 3 New City Buildings

0

concord-building-new-city-hallThe local governments of Concord and Kannapolis are giving themselves a $44 million face lift, showing incredible optimism in a steadily growing economy.

The city of Concord is building their new City Hall, spending about $16 million, while Kannapolis is constructing a new municipal building and police station for a total of $28 million.

The new 75,000 square foot Concord city hall building is currently being constructed at the corner of Cabarrus Avenue and Market Street. The facility will consolidate most of Concord’s administrative services, most of which currently function out of three Downtown buildings.

Municipal-Center-police-station-kannapolisThe current Concord municipal building at 26 Union Street has been in use since 1986 and the structure dates to 1950. City departments are also in the 1957 City Hall at 66 Union Street (now known as City Hall Annex) and the 1974 former police headquarters at 30 Market Street.

Kannapolis City Council will soon break ground on a new 100,000 square foot municipal center and police headquarters (pictured right). The building will be located at 401 Laureate Way on approximately 6.6 acres of land donated by North Carolina Research Campus founder David H. Murdock. The site faces the David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building on the N.C. Research Campus. A number of administrative departments will be consolidated under one roof. The Police Department will occupy about 40% of the facility.

Christmas Joyland Is Selling Over 2,000 New Toys At 75% Off To Help Needy Families

0

Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, NC is about to host its 4th annual “Christmas Joyland”, a community initiative that not only helps families afford Christmas presents, but also helps fight human trafficking.

The Christmas Joyland Toy Store helps hundreds of families around the Charlotte region who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford presents for their children.

Here’s the video I made of last year’s Christmas Joyland:

The Christmas Joyland event flyer states that, “Rather than simply coming to the church to pick up a donated item, families now receive the dignity and joy of selecting and purchasing items priced at deeply discounted rates.”

All of the new toys, electronics, and gift cards are donated by community members, then all proceeds from the sale are donated to local organizations that fight human trafficking.

The event will begin on December 10th, for more information you can check out their flyer here.

His site also notes that when his now wowing crowds, Chris can be found in the classroom, teaching private school students Latin (hence the nickname ‘teach’).

Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts Just Announced She’ll Be Running For Re-Election in November

0

mayor-roberts-reelectionIn an Email sent out to all of her supporters this week, Mayor Jennifer Roberts announced that she will be running for reelection next November.

“This week marks the one year anniversary of when I was sworn in as mayor, and I have loved every minute of serving Charlotte. Our city has faced challenges this year, but through continued hard work and by sticking together we will emerge stronger than ever,” Robert’s email noted.

Roberts initially took office in December 2015 after defeating Republican Edwin Peacock. The results were fairly close, with Roberts getting 41,749 votes and Peacock getting 38,019 votes.

Next November’s mayor race will likely focus on two major issues; Charlotte’s Ordinance 7056 (which caused NC Republicans to pass HB2, resulting in massive economic losses for our state), and how city leaders handled the Keith Scott shooting and the protests.

How do you feel about Mayor Robert’s job so far?

What would you like to see done differently in our city?

Lake Norman Real Estate Agents Found A New Cost-Effective Way To Sell Their Homes Online

0

As the Lake Norman real estate market continues to rely more heavily on the internet for buying and selling homes, local real estate agents are finding creative ways to stay ahead of the curve.

One of the most effective ways is to partner with local news outlets and community influencers to highlight their listings.

After being approached by several local agents, we recently opened up our Lake Norman Facebook profile (currently with over 6,000 very active friends and followers) to top local agents in what we are calling the ‘Featured Home of The Day’.

One of our test posts received a surprising amount of engagement from our Charlotte Facebook page:

We are now looking agents and homeowners who might be interested in marketing their listing or home on Facebook. Since we only want to post 1 home per day, we will only be able to partner with a limited number of agents and homeowners.

New Youth Basketball Program’s Motto is “No parents or adults allowed”

0

yes-i-can-basketball“No parents or adults allowed” declares the sign outside the south Charlotte gym at Jay M Robinson Middle School. But on this fall Monday evening there is an army of boys in the gym playing basketball – without adults – just by themselves.

Yes I Can Basketball, a Charlotte youth basketball program has rented the gym for 7 Monday evenings to allow boys in their program to come and simply play – for free. But what is unique about the program is the insistence that parents or adults are not allowed in the gym.

Marcus McGovern, one of the directors of Yes I Can Basketball said “This idea was born for several reasons. The first is because it’s almost impossible for boys this age to find quality gym time to play. Older boys or men dominate the limited gym time at local YMCA’s or recreation centers. Young boys are pushed to the side and that discourages them to the point they eventually will stop making the effort. “

Also, and no disrespect intended, but boys sometimes need a relief from those “helicopter parents” that hover over them in youth athletics. They can play a game without the critical eye or voice of a dad in the stands.”

“And finally, in today’s climate, boys rarely participate in any kind of activity unless a parent plans it and directs it.” Added McGovern “We want boys to experience what it feels like to organize themselves: without depending on adults. Our staff is there simply to supervise but that’s it. We purposely stay out of their way and insist they organize themselves. We want the boys to learn how to organize, lead and direct on their own.”

Two separate sessions are offered with 10-11 year old boys reporting at 6pm and 12-14 year old boys arriving at 7:15. The first 40 boys to arrive and sign in are accepted. No fee is charged, it’s free to any boys enrolled in the Yes I Can Basketball program.

“My husband and I have tried not to fall into the trap of overscheduling our children.” said Mrs. Stacy Leach. “It is easy to fall into a routine, monotonous schedule that is perfectly predictable and hectic. We were so excited when the NO PARENTS ALLOWED gym sessions were offered! Finally, something unpredictable for our son where he could learn the important skill of adapting to the unexpected and just have fun with no pressure from adults, parents, and coaches.”

Mrs. Kim Diaz, whose two sons Nick and Noah attend each Monday evening said, “I love this parent free gym time. It helps the boys to develop leadership skills. After the first session I was ecstatic to hear that my ten year old son was involved in taking the initiative to suggest the group split into teams by designating captains and then coordinating the games.”

Kim’s ten year old Nick Diaz said “ I like going to open gym because it helps me to get better without coaches teaching me. I really like having the opportunity to play 5 on 5 full court games because I rarely get to do that outside of my organized league games!”

Mike Behrman added “ The sandlot has become a nostalgic idea amidst all the structure imposed on today’s kids.” The open gym is an absolute breath of fresh air and provides my son Daniel the opportunity to organize teammates and to play freely and joyously. His big smile is all I need to see to know the positive effect of this weekly pick up game.

“This has been such a big hit with our Yes I Can Basketball families that we’ll plan on offering this again.” said McGovern “And yes – parents will continue to be turned away.”

North Carolina Man Catches Rare 112-lb Giant Catfish

0

One North Carolina man just caught one of the biggest Catfish in history (just 5 pounds less than the all-time record). Riahn Brewington went fishing in a nearby lake the day before Thanksgiving in New Hanover County, NC.

He was using a small fishing pole, with relatively light line when the monster grabbed his hook. He said that his line was completely taken out twice as he fought for over a half hour to reel the giant fish in.

What’s the biggest fish you’ve ever caught?

A new boutique bakery is coming to Fort Mill’s Main St. next year.

Southern Sugar Café will be a locally-sourced bakery, an espresso bar, and wine bar.

southern-sugar-logo-1Their breakfast will consist of in house baked goods, including but not limited to pop tarts, scones, and muffins. Breakfast boards, biscuits with homemade jelly flights, and various fruits will also be available for more breakfast options. Offerings around 4pm will feature heavy bite options ranging from charcuterie boards with locally sourced vegetables, fruits, honey, to a deconstructed strawberry shortcake. Southern Sugar will be purchasing most of their inventory from local sources, such as Fort mill strawberries.

Southern Sugar is owned by Courtney Thompson and Chris Thompson. Chris is a Fort Mill native, Chris was born and raised in Fort Mill. While looking for the perfect location, Courtney and Chris decided to pick Main St. as their location for their new café because of the great spot on Main St. in the historic Old Centre Theatre.

“This is my home, I was born and raised in Fort Mill. Courtney and I are thrilled to be a part of this community of people and couldn’t think of a better place to bring this concept. Most of what we will serve is all locally grown. Our deconstructed strawberry shortcake will be made with Fort Mill strawberries…of course! We are looking forward to being a part of people’s lives and giving back to the town that I grew up in.” commented Chris Thompson in a statement.
