Black Bear Spotted Roaming The Streets of Waxhaw and Rummaging Through Garbage Cans

A full-grown black bear is now being spotted by several residents around the streets and neighborhoods of Waxhaw, NC.

The bear was first spotted by several drivers on Marvin Road:

and was later seen near Airport Rd.

Waxhaw resident Stacy Watkins caught this footage of the black bear trying to take one of her garbage bags on her outdoor Nest Camera:

Waxhaw Police are now warning people to stay away from the bear and to call 911 if you spot it. Black bears typically do their best to avoid people, unless they feel threatened.

Verizon Wireless Taking Over Old K-Mart in Charlotte – Adding Up To 300 New Jobs

Verizon Wireless has just signed a lease on an old big-box retail store (formerly a K-Mart) to expand their call center in Charlotte.

They will be leasing about 90,000 sqft in the newly renovated strip mall at 2401 Sardis Road North.

In a recent statement Verizon Wireless said they are outgrowing their current 40,000 sqft space on Sardis Crossing Drive, just north of Matthews. Their new facility will allow them to add between 100 and 300 new jobs over the next several years.

Many of the old vacant big box stores around Charlotte’s old retail areas are being converted into a variety of alternative uses, including several churches on Independance Blvd., and a new public charter school on Freedom Drive.

CNN Released A Viral Video With An Update On CMPD’s Officer Purdy and a Local Autistic Teen

Last year a potentially dangerous situation was defused by a compassionate and quick-thinking CMPD officer.

Officer Tim Purdy from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was dispatched to help the unnamed teen who left school and may have been suicidal, according to reports. The teen had a history of violent behavior due to a neuro-development disorder.

When the officer arrived, he noticed other officers struggling to get the teen to cooperate and he sensed that the situation might soon turn violent. He immidiately stepped in and began to talk softly to the teen and eventually was able to get him to sit down, at which time, the officer sat down with him and continue to counsel him.

CNN recently stopped by Charlotte to reunite the officer and Charlotte resident…and to show his mom the now famous picture for the first time.

Norma Burns, owner of the Bluebird Hill Farm in Bennett, NC, has decided to give away her organic farm to the winning couple who submits her favorite essay.

According to the terms of the essay contest, “The winning entrant will receive Certificate of title, free and clear, the Bluebird Hill Farm, a USDA Certified Organic Farm near Raleigh, NC.  The farm has been estimated at $450,000.00 US”

Norma has decided that after managing the farm for 18 years, it’s simply too much responsibility for her at this time, and would prefer to retire in relaxation in Raleigh.

According to the website, the contest will have a fairly regimented judging process to ensure fairness: ”

“On June 5, 2017 the Contest Clerk (a person designated by the Judging Panel who is not the Contest Sponsor) will open the entry envelopes. The Clerk will assign a number to each entry, examine the entry form for completeness, enter the entrants’ names and contract information in a register, and use one of the included envelopes to send the entrants confirmation that their entry has been received on time and is complete. The Clerk will remove the entry form, then deliver the essays and resumes (identified only by entry number) to the Contest Sponsor. The Contest Sponsor will read every submission, and select 20 submissions for further consideration. The selected 20 submissions will be delivered to a Panel of Judges consisting of one Attorney, one Conservationist, and one Agricultural Professional. The Panel will choose the winner and two runners-up.”

Any couples who want to compete are asked to pay a $300 entry fee along with their essay. A panel of judges will decide who gets the 12.88 acre organic farm, valued at $450,000.

Charlotte Rallies Behind The Gomez Family As They Fight To Save Their Daughter’s Life

cancer-treatment-for-edilia-mendez-gomezOne Charlotte family is now in an unimaginable battle as they fight to save the life of their twin daughter.

4-year-old Edilia Mendez-Gomez was diagnosed earlier this year with a severe case of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After the diagnosis, she was put through a full round of chemo, but unfortunately, the cancer came back. She is currently in a second round of chemo, but due to technical issues with their insurance, they are unable to pay for the treatment.

The family recently started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for her treatment, and so far the city of Charlotte has rallied behind them to raise over $9,000 out of their $15,000 goal.

Edilia’s mom Melody Gomez posted this update on the campaign:

“I can not personally thank you all enough for all your kindness and Prayers. This definitely has been a tough journey for our family and to see all the people that have came together and not only give money but reach out with words of encouragement, and Prayers has been a true Testament to our Faith to never give up and to continue fighting! Thanks so much to everyone. You all are so appreciate.”

The family has said they’re still paying $1,000 a month for Dilia’s weekly chemo treatments, even after insurance.

The Charlotte-based Bojangles franchise is about to open their first redesigned ‘millennial-focused’ restaurant concept in the Queen City at 1401 W. Trade St., just outside Uptown Charlotte.

The first change includes old graphics that celebrate the brand’s heritage: “Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits” and “Made from Scratch Since 1977.” They’ll be softening their lighting and landscaped planters alongside the building and in the drive-thru lane give the restaurant a warmer, more welcoming feel.

They’ll also be changing up their interior, including a new “Biscuit Theater” where guests  can witness biscuits being made fresh every 20 minutes by a Bojangles’ ‘Master Biscuit Maker’.

The new restaurants will also features Wi-Fi, multi-device charging stations, unique high-top community tables, and a variety of interesting seating options to accommodate different-sized groups. New uniforms for all Bojangles’ team members will complete the updated look.

According to a Bojangles’ press release, the first 100 customers in line at the new Trade street location will receive a $100 Bojangles’ gift card (the store will open on June 1st at 5 a.m.).

They will also be giving away other freebies throughout the day, including a free Bo-Berry Biscuit from 8-11 a.m., a free iced tea from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., a free kids’ meal from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. and a coupon for a free biscuit from 5 p.m.-10 p.m.

Three cars burst into flames last night in a Huntersville plaza.

The vehicles were in the parking lot of the Northcross Shopping Center, just outside of Marshalls.

The cars were parked in front of Marshalls in the Northcross Shopping Center on Sam Furr Road.

By the time that Huntersville firefighters arrived on the scene, the cars were already engulfed in flames

Nobody was injured in the fires. Police and firefighters are still searching for clues as to who started the fires, or why they were started.

Lake Norman Was Ranked As Having The Biggest Lake-Front Housing Market In The South East

The Lake Norman real estate market is now valued at over $840 million, making it the #1 biggest lake-front market in the South East.

The Lake Market Report was conducted by the Alabama-based Lake Homes Realty Company. They collected data from 46 MLSs spanning 9 South Eastern states stretching from Texas to Virginia.

Out of all the lakes in the nine states, Lake Norman was found to have the biggest overall market, with Austin Texas’ Lake Travis coming in second at $787 million, and Atlanta’s Lake Lanier coming in third at $567 million.

One of the biggest reason the Lake Norman real estate market is so large is that it attracts a substantially high number of out-of-state and international buyers looking for a vacation homes, due to it’s temperate climate, distance to an international airport, and distance to the mountains and beaches.

The Lake Homes Report also indicated that a whopping 42% of all of North Carolina’s lakefront real estate is found on Lake Norman. Metro Charlotte’s other lake, Lake Wylie,, by comparison, only comprised about 6.7% of North Carolina’s lakefront real estate.

FBI Is Now Offering A $15,000 Reward To Help Find Missing Charlotte Teen

Hailey Burns missing in charlotteThe FBI has just announced a $15,000 reward for any information that would lead to the recovery of Hailey Elizabeth Burns. The Myer’s Park High School student has now been missing for over a year.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Hailey Burns (now 17 years old) was last seen at her home on Baldwin Hall Drive, in Charlotte’s Ballantyne area around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, May 23rd, 2016.

Hailey is a white female, 5’5″ tall, and weighs around 130 pounds, with hazel eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black long sleeve t-shirt with Marilyn Monroe on it and Converse tennis-shoes.
