A Group From West Virginia Drove To Charlotte To Give Sleeping Bags To The Homeless

Fred Kinder, a sales employee with Ramey Ford in West Virginia, started a sleeping bag giveaway a few years ago in partnership with Charlotte-based non-profit Hope Uprising. The Princeton, WV man noted that when he saw the homeless people in Charlotte, his heart melted and he knew he had to do something.

Kinder, along with family members, friends, and fellow employees made the trek down to the Queen City this past weekend with a truck full of sleeping bags, and several cars full of warm hearts. A total of 35 people traveled down to the Queen City (including 20 high school students), along with several volunteers from Charlotte’s Vision Church, to love on those who were freezing on our streets.

The group passed out over 400 sleeping bags, plus dozens of hats, gloves, and socks;

The Warm A Heart Give A Bed organization has been passing out sleeping bags for several years now – they first came down to Charlotte about two years ago.

We recorded this video of their first trip to the Queen City;

“We really want to help people with the very basic need of staying warm, many of the people we helped last year would have frozen to death without somewhere warm to sleep.” Kinder commented.

Kinder’s new non-profit, Warm a Heart, Give a Bed now delivers thousands of free sleeping bags each year to various towns and cities around West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

He’s hoping to spread even more warmth and love next year throughout the southeast.

Charlotte’s Healthy Home Markets Liquidating Everything In Their Stores

Charlotte’s two Healthy Home Markets are now liquidating everything on their shelves in a massive going-out-of-business sale.

In a press release, the store noted that their hardship started when they were forced to move their South Blvd location in 2014. Their problems only continued with the closing of their Independence store due to the road widening project in 2015, and the recent failure of their Lenoir store.

“Our wonderful staff and loyal customers have always been the heart of the stores. We feel our employees are like members of our family. We are devastated to make this decision and sincerely apologize for the effects on our employees, customers, landlords and vendors. We thank the community for their support over the last 40 years.”

This past August the store put itself up for sale, but since they were not able to find a buyer as of this past Wednesday, they had to make the hard decision to shut down their 2 remaining stores in Plaza Midwood (1330 Central Ave.) and Matthews (1816 Galleria Blvd.).

Their liquidation sale started yesterday at 25% off everything in the store.

I spoke with the cashier and she told me that they expect to completely sell out by this coming Thursday and that the discounts may increase on Monday.

Charlotte Hornets Announce Major Celebration For Their 30th Anniversary

The Charlotte Hornets have just announced that they will be going all out next season to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their inaugural 1988-89 season.

They want to remind fans of what the team was like when it first started, and many of ways the team has changed the city and contributed to our culture.

“We are excited to begin preparing to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the inaugural Hornets season with our fans,” said Hornets President & COO Fred Whitfield. “When the Hornets took the court in 1988, the city of Charlotte and the Carolinas were changed forever, and it is important that we acknowledge that beginning and those who have been a part of Charlotte’s 30-year love affair with the NBA.”

The anniversary season will include;

  • Appearances by legendary former Hornets players.
  • ’80s and ’90s-themed nights during home games.
  • 30th anniversary logo
  • 30th anniversary merchandise in the team store.
  • “Classic Edition” uniforms, which will be worn during select games.

The Hornets played their very first game on November 4, 1988, becoming the first major professional sports franchise in the Carolinas. They led the NBA in attendance seven seasons and recorded a total of 364 consecutive sellouts between Dec. 23, 1988 and Nov. 21, 1997.

To cap off the historic 30th anniversary season, the Hornets home arena will host the 2019 NBA All-Star Game on the 56th birthday of owner Michael Jordan.

New Petition Started To Keep The Panthers in Uptown Charlotte

This past Tuesday, we reported that key leaders are now considering building a new Panthers stadium near Carowinds, on the border of North and South Carolina.

Most of the comments we received were negative, with the majority of our readers wanting the stadium to remain in the heart of our city.

One Panthers fan has now taken action to try to stop the move with an online petition.

In the petition, Inezmarie Graci talks about how the central location of the Panthers stadium is crucial for the energy, excitement, and loyalty of fans. “When I attended my first game at Bank of America Stadium I was amazed at how easily accessible it was for fans to get to, and the amazing spirit of all of those fans lining the streets of the city they loved celebrating and getting ready to cheer their team on,” Graci notes.

If the petition receives at least 500 signatures, it will be delivered to;

  • North Carolina Governor
  • Vi Lyles
  • Bruton Smith
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Brian France
  • Felix Sabates

It reminds city leaders and future owners that, “we are one of very few NFL teams who have their stadium right in the heart of the city.  Moving the stadium down to the North/South Carolina border just so there could be extra parking would ruin the uniqueness that Charlotte is known for.  Fans would not be able to have easy access to attend games, and Charlotte as whole would suffer, not only impacting the fans but also local businesses. Think how much better the city is now that the Charlotte Knights have moved uptown!”

Largest Recall In History Issued After Another Death Confirmed From Faulty Airbags

Ford Motor Company has just confirmed another death in a 2006 Ford Ranger from a defective Takata airbag inflator. They are now urging the owners of a dozen different Ford Models to stop driving the vehicles immediately and bring them to a local Ford Dealership to get replacement parts.

Millions of vehicles are now being recalled to replace faulty Takata airbag inflators, according to Ford’s official recall. “Takata has determined that propellant degradation can rupture the airbag inflator. If the airbag is deployed, a ruptured inflator can send parts toward the vehicle occupants, resulting in injury or death.”

There are currently a total of 21 deaths that are believed to be linked to the Takata inflators that can rupture and send deadly metal fragments, most of which occurred in Honda vehicles.

New $10.2 Million Flyover Bridge Approved For Concord Mills

The busiest mall in North Carolina is about to get a whole lot easier to access thanks to a massive new $10.2 million flyover bridge.

According to the NCDOT, the new two-lane flyover bridge will “connect Interstate 85 at Concord Mils Boulevard to Kings Grant Pavilion, the first main entrance to the mall complex. The bridge will replace the existing left turn lanes at the intersection, improving traffic flow on Concord Mills Boulevard.”

“It’s very important to have traffic management plan that doesn’t affect drivers and visitors in that area,” NCDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Thompson commented.

Concord Mills currently brings in roughly 17 million visitors each year.

Work on the new bridge will start by May 1st, and is planned to be completed by June 15th, 2020.

Concord Firefighters Win Award For Rescuing Cow From Icy Pond

A Compassionate Fire Department Award is on its way from PETA to the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, which sprang into action on Monday afternoon after a local farmer noticed that all the cows in his pasture were staring at the frozen-over pond, where a cow named Julie had fallen through the ice. Mt. Pleasant Engine 1 and Rescue 1 arrived on the scene, where crews used an inflatable rescue boat, a sledgehammer, and a chainsaw to maneuver through at least 10 inches of ice and 12 feet of water, reach Julie’s side, and guide her to safety with ropes.

Deputy Chief Dustin Sneed said of the rescue, “Any time a life’s involved, whether it be an animal or a person, we do anything we [can] to make the best of it.”

“These brave firefighters didn’t hesitate to help this cow escape from her life-threatening predicament,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien.

The Mt. Pleasant Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a letter of congratulations, vegan jerky, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet, a Texas firefighter’s 28-day diet plan for vegan meals.

Charlotte’s Brad Panovich Was Just Named America’s Top Broadcast Meteorologist

Charlotte’s favorite meteorologist, according to Facebook likes, is now America’s top meteorologist, according to the American Meteorologist Society (AMS).

Brad Panovich was just named the country’s top broadcast meteorologist at this week’s 98th Annual AMS Meeting in Austin, Texas.

According to the AMS, Brad won the top award “for passionate devotion to informing his on-air audience and for extensive use of social media to educate the public about meteorology.”

Yesterday Brad posted several pictures from the ceremony along with his new recognition. In the post, he states, “What an amazing honor to be recognized by my fellow meteorologists in the American Meteorological Society. Career highlight for this national honor. #AMS2018 #Blessed.”

Way to go Brad! Keep up the good work!

3 Panthers Players Have Now Been Selected For The 2018 Pro Bowl

A few weeks ago, Luke Kuechly was selected for the 2018 Pro Bowl, meaning he is one of the two best linebackers in the NFL.

Yesterday two more Panther players were also chosen – our kicker Graham Gano and our offensive lineman Trai Turner.

They were originally chosen as alternatives when the initial selections were made, but they have now been moved up to replace LA Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein and Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Zack Martin due to injuries.

Massive Recall Issued For Ice Cream Bars Sold in The Carolinas Due To Listeria

A major recall has just been issued for two kinds of ice cream products sold in BI-LO, BJ’s, Dollar Tree, Fred Meyer, Kroger, and Winn Dixie.

The recall is for Southern Home Orange Cream Bars (UPC Code 6078801142) and Southern Home Arctic Ice Cream Bars (UPC Code 60788001147), with “best by” dates from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.

According to the FDA, “both products are being recalled due to the possibility that they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

All of the ice cream products, regardless of the “best by” date, should be thrown away or returned to the store they were purchased for a full refund.
