The Charlotte area is about to get 3 brand new sporting good stores…kind of.

NC Museum Unveils First Oviraptorosaur Eggs Ever Discovered In America

0

This past week, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences just unveiled the first Oviraptorosaur eggs ever discovered in America.

The eggs come from a feathered dinosaur that looked like a cross between a giant chicken and a velociraptor and stood about as tall as a house. The creatures grew long feathers, beaks, and walked on two long legs with massive talons at the end of each foot.

They were unveiled to a room full of children by Lindsay Zanno, the museum’s head paleontologist;

The animal that laid the nest of eggs now on display at Raleigh’s museum represents a brand new North American species of Oviraptorosaur, which has yet to be given an official name.

Scientists at the museum will spend the next year slowly uncovering what they believe to be many as 10 more eggs inside of the petrified cluster.

The entire exhibit is now on display at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, 11 West Jones St., Raleigh, NC

They now have an additional 9 locations in the works for North Carolina, Arkansas, and Texas – 5 of which are in the Charlotte area (including the new Concord Mills location).

Charlotte Leaders Just Submitted Bid To Host The 2020 Republican National Convention

0

The City of Charlotte has just submitted an official bid to host the 2020 Republican National Convention.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support and assistance of our many City of Charlotte partners, hotels, venues and others who helped to craft this thorough response on behalf of our region,” commented CRVA CEO Tom Murray.

Murray didn’t disclose the specifics of the bid, but many leaders think that Charlotte may have a high likelihood of winning, considering our current political atmosphere and recent growth.

President Trump won North Carolina by only 3.7% back in 2016 and many think the margins will be even closer for the 2020 election. Both major political parties usually hold their conventions in swing states like North Carolina in order to sure up their base and attempt to drum up new excitement. Two years ago the Republicans held their convention in Cleveland, OH, and 4 years before that they held it in Tamps, FL – both major swing states.

Charlotte has also recently seen massive growth in hotels around Center City, meaning more Republican delegates wouldn’t have to travel as far as they did in Cleveland to attend the convention sessions.

The convention would be a huge economic boost for our city, considering that the Democratic National Convention that we hosted in 2012 had an estimated economic impact of over $163 million.

The last RNC took place in Cleveland, OH back in 2016 where nominees Donald Trump and Mike Pence made their first appearance.

What are your thoughts on Charlotte hosting the RNC?

10 Worst Charlotte Restaurant Health Scores in March

0

Even though Charlotte’s restaurant selection continues to grow, so does our population, and some restaurants are taking advantage of this growing customer base by letting their health standards slide.

Some of the most common reasons for low scores were food handlers not washing their hands properly, contaminated food containers, and improper food temperatures (many restaurants are starting to use infrared thermometers to avoid this). You can see exactly what the inspectors look for on this blank copy of an inspection report.

These are the top 10 worst currently standing inspection scores in Mecklenburg County (some restaurants scored lower in March but were reinspected with higher scores before April 2nd):

Charlotte’s Third Annual Sandwich Festival Is Coming Up This Month

0

The sandwich transcends geographic lines. Two slices of bread or a wrap with something in between – seasoned pork, melted cheese or spicy veggies –pleases people across all cultures. For the third consecutive spring, Aldersgate will celebrate its diverse eastside neighborhood and the diversity of the omnipresent sandwich at a multicultural, multigenerational festival.

In 2016, Aldersgate exalted the culinary world’s workhorse – and the ultimate convenience food – at the first International Sandwich Festival (ISF). The event has now grown into an annual happening. On Saturday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the senior living community hosts the Third Annual ISF, a community celebration of the sandwich – and of a neighborhood that’s home to a rich diversity of residents and global restaurants.

“Nearly every culture has a sandwich that’s sort of the national favorite,” said Suzanne Pugh, Aldersgate CEO. “In Vietnam, it’s the banh mi. South America has the arepa, and Cuba has its own version of a grilled meat-and-cheese. Our annual festival allows us to celebrate the diversity of cultures we have right here in our own neighborhood – and the diversity of cuisines those cultures have given us.”

“Aldersgate rejects the old concept of ‘retirement home,’ Pugh continued. “We’re creating a place where seniors live, play and learn – but this is also a place where people of all ages want to spend time. The intergenerational aspect of this festival represents who we are.”

ISF admission and parking are free, and CATS Bus #23 takes guests directly to the festival. Food and drinks may be purchased. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and spend the afternoon.

The free festival celebrates the cultural diversity of east Charlotte, bringing international flavor and family-friendly activities to the front lawn of Aldersgate at 3800 Shamrock Drive. Sammies from around the world – and a rich blend of entertainment curated in part by UNC Charlotte – are part of a celebration that features food from restaurants and food trucks including A Piece of Havana,ArepadasChaupaati Casual Indian Kitchen , Yummi Banh Mi  and Hiya Food Truck.

Hardin Minor is the master of ceremonies. All-day entertainment will include salsa, merengue, soul and dance performances. Back by popular demand as the festival’s finale is Persona Bell and her R&B band. They’ll perform from 5 to 6 p.m. Bell, a singer/songwriter, pianist and entertainer, has performed all over the world, including at the White House, Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall and in Norway for the Queen.

This year’s ISF offers plenty of children’s entertainment – face painting, a make-your-own sandwich station, henna tattoos and a balloon artist.

“Our wooded campus is 231 acres,” said Erin Barbee, Aldersgate’s director of mission advancement and chair of this year’s festival. “But you may have passed us hundreds of times without knowing we’re tucked back here. We love inviting people of all ages to see what a gorgeous property we have. It’s an honor to host everyone – and especially our eastside neighbors. We want Aldersgate to be a cultural resource for the entire community.”

“Cultural understanding has become more necessary than ever,” she added.

Currently scheduled performances, which continue to be added, include:
