Second Shake Shack Location Confirmed For Charlotte

While the Carolina’s first Shake Shack location is planning for their grand opening in the Park Rd. Shopping Center, we have just confirmed that a second Charlotte location is now in the works.

This means that Charlotte will soon have 2 Shake Shacks before any other city in the Carolinas even gets 1.

The new location is expected to open toward the end of summer/beginning of fall 2018 in the Blakeney Village;

The grand opening of the first location in the Carolinas is now set for Thursday, April 26 at 11 a.m. in the Park Road Shopping Center.

Charlotte was chosen over Charleston for Shake Shack’s first Carolinas store, their next closest locations are in Atlanta, Lexington, and the Washington DC area:

Parents Holding A Rally in Uptown Charlotte Today As Part Of ‘Sex Ed Sit Out’

A new grassroots movement is asking parents to keep their kids home from school today in protest of what they say is “graphic and promiscuity-promoting sex education”.

According to their website, “this protest was initiated by a few moms on social media who were troubled by the graphic nature of current sex education resources in schools. It has since grown into a global movement with protests being planned in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.”

Parents in the following cities will be participating in today’s protest;

Here in Charlotte, there will also be a rally outside of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center in Uptown.

Several parents, teachers and community members are scheduled to speak at 5PM. Elizabeth Johnston, a national conservative blogger, known as the “Activist Mommy,” will join Tami Fitzgerald, the Executive Director of NC Values Coalition, on the platform this evening at 5pm.

Fitzgerald thinks the current sex-ed policies are inappropriate for young children and believes that certain sex-ed topics should be handled by parents.

“It is deceitful and harmful that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools—the very institution to which parents entrust their children for their education—should use their place of trust to indoctrinate children as young as Kindergarten with gender ideologies like sexual orientation and transgender behavior,” Fitzgerald commented. “Presenting these harmful behaviors and idealizing early sexual activity is not the place of schools. Parents should be the ones to determine when and how these topics are presented to their children.”

Elizabeth Finley, a spokeswoman for Sexual Health Initiatives for Teens NC (SHIFT NC), disagrees with the sit out, as she believes that all families in North Carolina have the ability to opt out of sex ed classes.

“We’re always big proponents of parental engagement, but we think this is a really strange way to protest this topic,” Finley said. “They’re going to miss a whole day of classes, including reading and math, on a day when nobody knows if sex ed will be taught.”

Each school district in North Carolina is required to pick their own materials to teach students about abstinence, protection against STDs, contraceptives, and sexual assault/abuse risk prevention.

The N.C. Values Coalition is specifically protesting three fairly new policies used by some school districts in our state;

▪ The ‘Get Real’ sex education program from Planned Parenthood

▪ The ‘Welcoming Schools’ program from the Human Rights Campaign (used in CMS elementary schools).

▪  NC’s partnership with ‘SHIFT NC’ to provide certain districts optional training in how to support LGBQT students.

The Carolina’s Biggest Steeplechase With $150,000 in Prizes Is Coming To The Charlotte Region

queens cup charlotteIn just a few days, one of the biggest horse racing events in the southeast is coming to the Charlotte region.

Every year, thousands of people come out to see some of the most athletic thoroughbred horses race each other at speeds of over 30 miles per hour. The jockeys, dressed in bright colored silks, push their sleek steeds to clear four and a half foot jumps over a two and a quarter to as much as three miles rolling turf course.

This year’s purse is a record for the Queen’s Cup – the winner will now receive $150,000 in cash, as well as the opportunity to bask in the glory of the winner’s circle is what it’s all about from the horse’s connections.

The Queen’s Cup attracts a true mix of horse enthusiasts, race fans, and networking elite looking to solidify their latest business deal.

There will be plenty of space all around the rolling hills to set up a spacious picnic or tailgate with some of your neighbors.

Police have just issued a statewide silver alert for a missing teenager.

16-year-old Skyler Dawn McDowell was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, jeans, black high-top converse shoes and carrying a large black pocketbook.

Her last known location was at the Glenn High School, 1600 Union Cross Rd, Winston-Salem NC 27107;

Skyler is described as being a White female, 5’5″ tall, weighing 180lbs, with long blonde hair and brown eyes.

A Northeastern University student, attending Charlotte’s Uptown campus, was escorted out of Starbucks by the building’s security guards after being asked to leave by the shift manager.

“Why are you asking me to leave Starbucks, a public place?” asked Cook in his cell phone video he recorded.

Cook said he made a purchase earlier in the day and then returned a few hours later to finish up some studying when he was approached by a security guard, telling him to leave, because he didn’t make a new purchase on his second visit.

Cook is hoping that by sharing his video and his story, it will give another reason and way that Starbucks can work to change their culture. He hopes that store employees can learn better ways to deal with people instead of just asking them to leave the property.

“Stop. Stop the racial profiling, the racial discrimination that’s happening within your organization, within your company,” said Cook.

Starbucks has been taking heat after a video of two black men being arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks store started going viral.

The CEO of Starbucks has now decided to close 8,000 stores across the country this month to retrain their employees about racism and race bias.

CDC Expands Lettuce Recall – Now Saying Romaine In All 50 States Could Contain E. Coli

The CDC has just expanded their romaine lettuce recall to now cover all 50 states. They are now warning all US citizens not to eat romaine lettuce, or any products containing romaine lettuce at restaurants and at home.

53 people have now been confirmed to be infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7 from 16 states, according to their report. “Ill people range in age from 10 to 85 years, with a median age of 34. Seventy percent of ill people are female. Thirty-one ill people have been hospitalized, including five people who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. ”

The CDC is now instructing everyone to “Throw away all chopped romaine lettuce, including salad mixes containing romaine, and any other foods stored with it or touching it…”

They also noted that the infected lettuce is coming out of Yuma, Az;

Air Force One Bringing VP Mike Pence To Charlotte Today

Vice President Mike Pence will be flying to the Queen City today for an event that will focus on taxes and the mid-term elections.

The event was planned and promoted by America First Policies, a nonprofit focused on promoting President Trump’s campaign.

Today’s Charlotte stop is just one of many Mike Pence will be making as he crosses the country on his new tour called the “Tax Cuts to Put America First”.

Several other Republicans will be joining the Vice President on stage today, including U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, 9th District U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger and Lt. Governor Dan Forest. They’ll all speak together in a panel discussion on tax cuts and local businesses.

The event will start at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon at The Park Expo and Conference Center.

Carolina Panthers Playoffs 2016The 2018 Carolina Panthers schedule has just been released!

We’ll be kicking off the season at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 9th at 4:25pm. The new schedule includes 2 prime-time games – Thursday Night Football against the Steelers in Phili on Nov. 8th, and Monday Night Football against the Saints at home on Dec. 17th.

“Our coaching staff has already been hard at work preparing for our opponents, but it is always intriguing to find out when we’re playing the games. It will certainly be a challenge for us, and I’m looking forward to it,” commented coach Ron Rivera.

Adidas Just Created Iconic Sneakers To Represent Each State – Here Are The Carolinas

Adidas has just announced the release of one of their most unique collections of sneakers in the company’s history – 50 hand-designed Ultraboost X sneakers, 1 for each state in the nation.

The company hired 12 female artists to create each state’s sneaker, with the help of Refinery29 (an online media company focused on young women). Each artist used a variety of mediums and colors to recreate iconic, state-inspired concepts on the sneakers.

“As a brand that walks the line between sport and creativity, we saw the triple white silhouette as a blank canvas full of possibilities to collaborate with powerful and expressive women in a way that would celebrate differences and highlight the unique characteristics that unite us,” commented Alexa Andersen, U.S. category director for women’s running at Adidas.

Here are the designs for the Carolinas;

North Carolina – Artist: Jenny K.

“The Venus flytrap is North Carolina’s most famous natural legacy found in the subtropical wetlands.”

 

South Carolina – Artist: Lizzie Darden

“Using food as a uniting factor and symbol of community, I created this sneaker with South Carolina’s most famous cuisine in mind: shrimp and grits.”

The sneakers will be sold in an online auction from July 4 through July 11, with all proceeds going to Women Win, a charity devoted to advancing women’s leadership.

Non-customized Adidas UltraBOOST X range in price from $120 – $180 online and come in six different colors including triple white, mystery blue, trace pink, core black, clear grey and glow orange.

Charlotte Race Fans Gearing Up For Pirelli World Challenge

Next week the Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) will be coming to our region for the second straight, welcoming back thrilling multi-class racing with top drivers in the hottest production-based cars, such as Porsches, McLarens, Bentleys and more.

The race will take place at the VIRginia International Raceway, about one and a half hours North East of Charlotte, it was recently named one of the top six road courses in North America by Car and Driver Magazine.

Ryan Eversley, who will be racing Nissan’s new NSX GT3, noted that the race will draw a huge number of fans from the Charlotte region, given our unique car culture. “Charlotte has one of the strongest sportscar cultures among major cities. With massive commmuter community and a motorsports degree at UNCC, a sprawling metropolis, and a rich history of NASCAR and racing culture, Charlotte’s racing fanbase is huge.”

PWC is North America’s top GT production car-based championship and will feature seven separate classes of competition. Weekend highlights at VIR include two 60-minute SprintX races featuring mandatory driver and tire changes, with the first race taking place Saturday, April 28 and the second Sunday, April 29. Reaching speeds of 130+ miles per hour, these drivers will take on VIR’s 3.27-mile historic full course, which has 17 turns and 130 feet of elevation changes that includes the “Climbing Esses,” a section of the course considered by many drivers as one of the most challenging and intimidating in North America.

“We are thrilled to have the excitement and adrenaline-pumping competition that PWC brings back at the track this year,” said Connie Nyholm, VIR owner and CEO. “It’s an incredible series that we’re honored to host for VIR fans, and we look forward to creating unforgettable memories for racers and spectators alike. The electrifying action of PWC is the first of our headlining events in 2018, and we couldn’t think of a better way to officially kick off VIR’s racing season with everyone this April.”

In addition to PWC racing, the weekend will feature support series, including Radical Cup North America and the F4 U.S. Championship season-opener. Also new this year, fans have the opportunity to experience the rush of these type of high-speed, open-cockpit racecars themselves. Formula Experiences is offering ride-alongs at speeds up to 140 miles per hour in real 2018 formula and prototype racecars, something previously only available in Europe, on all three days.

Advanced discount tickets for PWC weekend are $20 for Friday-only, $30 for Saturday-only, $40 for Sunday-only, $50 for a two-day Saturday and Sunday ticket, and $60 for a three-day ticket. All tickets will be an additional $10 if purchased at the gate. Children 16 and under are admitted free of charge with a paying adult and parking is also free. Active military are admitted free of charge and veterans receive a 50 percent discount with valid military ID.
