Do Dogs Really Help You Deal with Mental Health Issues?

0

Have you been scrolling through hundreds of cute dog reels and cannot stop swiping further? Well, the overloaded cuteness makes it tough to stop. This is why many people adopted dogs during the COVID-19 lockdown, as they had tons of time at home and needed a way to deal with stress. If you have been thinking the same, think again.

How do I know about this subject? I did not adopt a dog but bought one from  shar pei puppies for sale. I got a dog during the pandemic, too; hence, who better tell you it’s reality other than me?

It was super exciting to bring home a cute little puppy. All those reels I saw would come true, and I had a faithful companion who would help me fight mental illness during the lockdown.

It took me a day and a half before I realized what I had done? Was it really as easy as everybody made it seem? Why was I not having those super cute moments with the dog? Maybe it was because I was busy cleaning my house so that it did not smell like dog pee or stopping the dog from chewing on my expensive furniture pieces.

This was not something alien happening to me as I realized most dog owners go through this phase, but I was just not prepared for it. After all, those dog videos did not really show me this side of the reality of raising a dog. So what is the truth behind getting a dog for mental health aid? Well, I have decoded that below.

You Need to Put in Work to Get the Benefits:

If you love how dogs bond with their owners and want the same, you must first work towards it. Bringing home a dog does not guarantee that. You have to create that bond with the dog by training it, walking it, and feeding it. It takes time to build a certain bond with the dog. Usually, it is not a long period, but you have to keep interacting with the animal. You cannot just hire a dog walker or someone to care for the dog and assume you will get all the affection and attention. You have to work for it. As you tend to the animal, they understand that you care for them; hence they will reciprocate the same feeling in their own way. Any time you spend with them can be a bonding time. Train them daily, which will make them easily manageable and also increase your bonding time with the dog. Some dogs are better suited to this role than others; you want a sociable dog, like a border collie or a lab, that’ll be eager to spend time with you. These dogs are also known for their patience and are easier to train than others, making them the ideal support companion.

Know What an Emotional Support Dog Is:

Many people assume that any dog can be used as an emotional support dog. Most dogs can do that, but you have to spend time training the dog first. If you get a puppy, then you have to be patient for the puppy to learn and grow. If you have issues like extreme anxiety, then a puppy is not a good idea, as they can sometimes really get on your nerves. Better get an adult dog that is already trained so that you do not have to deal with the stress of initial training and only focus on forming a bond with the dog.

Understand What Works for You:

One situation may work for someone else but not you. You have to decide what works best for you. If you are allergic, you have to get a hypoallergenic dog breed. If you are a senior citizen, opt for smaller dog breeds that do not need much physical activity. If you are busy, get a breed that does not suffer much from separation anxiety. You have to analyze your situation and deduce what works best for you. Also, dogs with double coats shed, which means you have to put in extra cleaning time. If that is something you do not wish to do, get low shedding dog breeds like Poodles or designer Doodles which makes it easier to keep the home cleaner.

Do They Really Help to Improve Your Mental Health?

Yes, dogs can definitely make you feel less anxious and extremely loved. Having said that, you have to take care of the dog and train it. Feeding and walking them is a part that can be stressful to many. Especially if you get a highly energetic dog and cannot give it much time, then their destructive nature will actually get on your nerves and stress you more. You need to understand that getting just any dog will not do the trick. Get a dog that you can really manage and fits into your lifestyle. Only then the dog will blend into your daily routine, and just taking care of the dog itself does not stress you out.

Having said that, a trained dog actually, over time, becomes the greatest gift ever. The bond a dog shares with you is unique and irreplaceable. Just holding your dog will help release happy hormones and reduce hormones, which are great for anyone who suffers from anxiety. There are specific breeds that are more popular as emotional support animals, like Labrador Retrievers. These are affectionate dogs that sense your mood and offer you relief immediately by showing affection. They stay closer to you always and lick your face and ears when you seem upset. If you are a dog lover, you will understand how adorable that is.

The Bottom Line:

I am not discouraging anyone from getting a dog, as a dog person will always love to have one around, but if you are just getting one because they are cute, you have to reconsider your options. If you are willing to put in the work and care for the animal as much as you expect it to care for you, then maybe you are ready. There will be good days and there will be bad days; learn to take it with a pinch of salt. Getting a dog is an excellent idea if you decide to keep one for the right reasons.

Stuck in a Business Rut? Learn How to Shake Things Up

0

When partners in a relationship continually go to the same restaurants and weekend drives that they always do, things can become completely predictable and boring.

The same can be said for a business that gets stuck in its ways and feels like it is sputtering forward on autopilot, with opportunities for innovation seemingly passing it by at the speed of light.

The first step that may come to mind is to introduce a brand new product

send a blast of creativity into your organization to get employees thinking outside of the box again, and introduce some refreshing advertising campaigns and sales opportunities.

Maybe the entire look and feel of the company is sound asleep and needs a total rehaul.

Is it time for rebranding in order to make the company relatable to younger consumers or to recapture the magic that pulled in your original day-one supporters?

If there have been rumblings of negative feedback from employees that your brand is floating along, dead in the water, a strategic rebrand can put the staff back on board with a feeling of job security that the company is growing and has its pulse on the present tense and the future.

But what about the less obvious ways in which you can shake things up at your company in a good way and get some creative stimulation brewing to move things ahead?

Launch Customer Focus Groups

Instead of simply relying on what has always worked, get some ideas from the outside and conduct a focus group with customers to get their feedback.

Formal focus groups can involve bringing a market research company on board to be in charge of the process, or you can run an informal focus group that can do something as simple as picking a customer’s brain the next time you run into them.

Renew Life at the Office

Our thought processes have a lot to do with the environment that we spend the most time in.

Does the office at work feel like a high-anxiety dungeon and not an epicenter of innovative ideas?

It is quite possible that the time has come to redecorate the space with brighter colors and provide onsite areas for staff to unwind and brainstorm together.

Get any messy rooms reorganized and make work a place that people want to be in and not the location that they staff right out of at 5:01 on a Friday evening.

Reportedly, two-thirds of managers claim that employees who work from home increase their productivity, and 86% of employees feel most productive when left to their own devices and free of distractions from office noise, internal gossip, and meetings that aren’t applicable to their responsibilities.

Maybe you have employees that feel beaten down by their lengthy commute and could be just as effective working from home, if not more so. Give them the opportunity if possible.

Update Your Technology

When was the last time you did a technology overhaul and not only updated the computers that your staff is working off of but also looked into more economical software and online platform options that can streamline workflows?

Expand Your Network

Maybe the way for your business to run away from a rut that it is stuck in is to widen your circle of business connections and meet up with someone new from a different field of business to trade notes.

Is it time to bring new partners or employees onboard or even create a new department or branch within the company?

Become part of a networking organization that holds meetings that you have never had the pleasure to attend before.

Kevin Miller, the award-winning Co-Founder and CEO of the ever-expanding digital marketing firm GR0 explained to BillionSuccess.com how he has been able to manage his busy schedule and still keep energy surging through him to stretch the digital marketing horizons of content creation and GR0’s Performance PR services:

“I consistently dedicate time to going to the gym, working out outdoors, and bike riding. Getting your natural endorphins flowing does a world of good for minimizing stress and allows me to clear my mind and put my problems into perspective. Between putting out fires all day and managing a widespread team digitally, it’s easy to burn out and hold my stress in my body. All the build-up and the tension tends to hinder my focus and productivity so working out keeps my body healthy as well as my mind.”

Review Your Company’s Finances

Finally, don’t become like numerous business owners who ignore the fluctuation of cash flow that can become the detriment of the business, whether that financial neglect forces the company to live check-to-check or have to suddenly close before it grows.

Don’t stay stuck in a rut with a redundant response of, “Let’s just wait and see,” and become proactive with money management by reviewing the corporate cash flow no less than on a monthly basis. If you want to know more about starting a business, you can find relevant information at  kuwaiti.lawyer.

Pay close attention to your sales and financial projections and make sure they’re on track, particularly if there are vendors that you may have to increase shipments from or upgrades that may need financing in the near future.

Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte Hosting Teen Discussion on Speaking Out

0

At a time when Holocaust education is debated across the country – most notably the recent controversy surrounding a Tennessee school board’s decision to ban the graphic novel “Maus” – the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte is hosting author Liza Wiemer for a discussion with Jewish teens and their parents about standing up against injustice and hate.

Wiemer is the author of “The Assignment,” a novel based on a real-life incident where two students took a stand against an English teacher’s assignment to imagine being a Nazi and to argue for or against the Final Solution.

“Alienation, bullying, and feeling different are strong barriers to speaking up against injustice and hate, especially when peer pressure is strong to remain silent” said Federation Chief Impact Officer Tair Giudice. “This presentation will empower Jewish teens with the tools to find the courage to speak up against intolerance and antisemitism.”

Wiemer’s presentation is part of the Federation’s inaugural Jewish Book Festival, celebrating Jewish authors, books, and ideas. As a part of the Festival, Wiemer will also be visiting the Community School of Davidson, Davidson K-8, Oakwood Middle School, and Harper Middle College to speak with students about the impact of antisemitism and how to be an ally and upstander.

Easy Things to Keep You Entertained Whilst Travelling with Your Pet

0

Whether you’re traveling for work or pleasure, it’s always nice to have your furry friend by your side. But what can you do when you’re on the go and your pet needs some stimulation? Here are a few easy ideas to keep you and your pet entertained while traveling.

Play fetch with them

If you have a tennis ball, bring it along and play with your pet as much as you can before and after the trip. Just make sure your dog doesn’t leave any calling cards in the car!

Be careful about what food and toys you give them before and during travel time – some foods may affect their digestive system, and some toys can be dangerous if your pet swallows any pieces.

Bring some toys with you

When it’s time to leave, bring some of your pet’s old clothes, boxes with holes cut out for them to peek through, or even a favorite toy. Make sure you have enough toys to last the trip so they don’t get bored.

Account for changes in the environment

If you’re leaving home and taking your pet with you, you have to remember that their day-to-day routine has probably been turned upside down. Make sure you account for these changes with a walk before and after traveling, a bathroom break immediately after landing, and regular feedings.

Make sure you get some me time!

Let’s be honest, you’ll probably want some me-time at some point during your travels. Make sure you take enough time for yourself during the trip to keep your sanity. Of course, you need to make sure your pet is happy and healthy. However, once they’re calm or sleeping, it’s important you make a little bit of time that’s just for you.

It doesn’t really matter what you do whilst your pet is sleeping. You could read a book, watch a film, or play online slots at websites like SlotsLV. What matters is that you make a point to do something for yourself every now and again.

Make sure they stay hydrated

Be sure you read all the necessary information and have enough water or food packed along for your pet during the trip. If they’re going for more than a day without food, be sure to have enough water.

Talk to your pet

You don’t have to be an animal whisperer, but you should try and keep them calm and happy by talking to them throughout your trip. Let your pet know everything is going to be okay and things will get back to normal soon.

Pet-proofing the car

If you’re traveling with animals, it’s also important that you pet-proof your car. No matter how well behaved they seem, you never know what could spook them during the trip. Keep a trash bag and other supplies in your trunk just in case and be sure all of their food and toys are secure enough that they won’t slip into the passenger area while you’re driving.

Take rest stops

Give your pet a few bathroom breaks throughout the trip, and make sure they get to stretch their legs.

If you have other pets, bring them along too!

Bringing other pets might be just the thing to keep your pet from getting bored on the trip. They can watch each other and play together while you look after them both. It might be a good idea to have your pet wear a harness or carry pack just in case, as it will be easier to keep track of them.

Pack a first aid kit

Just in case things do go wrong, you should pack a first-aid kit with all of the essentials when traveling with your pet to ensure their safety. This includes antihistamines for bug bites and allergic reactions, hydrogen peroxide for cuts and abrasions, cotton swabs, and bandages.

Have a safe trip

You should be mindful of your pet while you’re driving and keep them in a carrier or on a leash to avoid distractions. Make sure the carrier is large enough that they can lie down comfortably and not get in your way.

When you’re done traveling, remember the stress that a trip can have on a pet. They probably won’t want to go through it again any time soon! Remember to reward them with lots of treats and affection when they get back home, and make sure they get plenty of attention after getting settled in.

Conclusion

It’s important to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible during a trip. This includes making time to take care of themselves and being mindful of their health and well-being. Most importantly, have fun! Make the most out of your pay day with this wonderful guide for your next trip with your furry friend.

How Testing Promotes Effective Learning: Research

0

The founder of Khan Academy, Mr. Sal Khan, told about the effectiveness of tests in his TED talk. Today, tests are mostly used to assess knowledge, but Sal suggests using them for learning. Indeed, there are many arguments in favor of this decision, which are proved by numerous researches. In this article, we will share some brief extracts from scientific papers, proving the effectiveness of testing.

Testing and memory

In 2006, Henry L. Rodiger, a researcher in human learning and memory at the University of Washington, and Jeffrey D. Carpick, a professor of psychological science at Purdue University, conducted an experiment. They divided the students into three groups. Each of them read texts rich in facts: for example, one of the topics was otters:

  • The first group read the text once and then passed the tests three times;
  • The second group read the passage three times but passed the tests only once;
  • The third group simply reread the material four times.

It is crucial to note that the testing was not limited to answering the questions. For example, students had to recall as much as possible: the number of “main ideas” from the text they mentioned was assessed. That’s why using the Storyboard that tool to create a matching worksheet is really promising.

The result was determined by final testing. It was held twice – five minutes after the training session and one week later. Five minutes after the experiment, the third group showed the best results, and the worst was the first group. One week later, the students were tested again. This time the results were exactly the opposite: the best were students from the first group, and the worst were those who reread the material four times. So they concluded that testing immediately after processing the material slowed down the process of forgetting in the long run.

Assessing personal progress

After the training sessions, students were interviewed. They had to assess their own strengths and predict the result of testing in a week. Students who only reread the texts were more confident in their knowledge than those who passed the tests – rereading created the illusion of competence. However, this illusion disappeared a week after the final test.

But students who took the test immediately after processing the material assessed their knowledge more realistically – the tests contributed to the correct assessment of their own strengths. Accordingly, such students devoted more time to repeating the material and did much better. Thus, passing the tests contributes to better organization of knowledge and the ability to apply them in practice.

Frequent testing also teaches students to study regularly. Experiments show that students who take regular tests (for example, at the end of each lesson) show better results than those who do not face the tests anywhere but exams. This is also in line with the educational trend of microlearning – learning in small portions with mandatory testing afterward.

3 Christmas Decorations You Can Buy Now to Save Money Later

0

When it comes to purchasing Christmas decorations, it pays to plan in advance. Buying your holiday decorations and ornaments earlier enables you to save money and avoid last-minute markups. You also have a higher chance of getting what you want rather than having to settle for what’s left in the store.

The demand for Christmas decorations usually goes up when the festive season rolls in. And thus, many retailers mark up their prices to make the most out of the extra demand. If you had bought your decorations earlier, you don’t have to worry about the hike in prices.

Let’s explore 3 Christmas decorations you can buy now to save money when the holiday season arrives.

Nativity Set and Figures

Perhaps there is no better way to capture the true meaning of Christmas than with a vintage nativity set. This holiday decoration is an excellent reminder of why we celebrate Christmas. It allows you to reflect on the birth of Jesus in a manger and appreciate him for being in your life. Nativity sets are also great for teaching your kids about the time Jesus was born and the people who were there to witness it.

Consider buying your nativity set earlier on to save on last-minute costs. You can always store this Christmas decoration safely in your collection of festivities as you wait patiently for the holiday season.

Wreaths and Garlands

Wreaths and garlands have, for a long time, been a part of the Christmas tradition. These two decorations are great for adding the Christmas feel and spirit to your home. Be sure to expect the price of the two to soar when the festive season draws nearer. You may want to buy artificial wreaths and garlands now to avoid the hustle and bustle of searching for them after thanksgiving.

You don’t have to hang the wreath at your front door or the garland at the stairway now. Just keep these decorations safely and wait. The holiday season is not as far as one may think.

Christmas Lights

The festive season would barely be the same without Christmas lights adorning the streets and lighting up our homes and trees. Who doesn’t love seeing Christmas lights during the holiday season?

Buying this Christmas decoration earlier will allow you to exploit the many choices available, from LED Christmas lights to icicle lights to battery-operated lights. As with the other decorations and ornaments, simply put the lights away in your box of festivities. Be careful, however, not to break them as some of them are made of glass and thus are fragile.

Final Remarks

Who said you have to wait until December to get your Christmas gifts and decorations? You can buy them now to save money later. The money you save per ornament or decoration may not seem like much. But if you sum it as a whole, you’ll be surprised at how much you got to save.

Half of North Carolina students are planning a sober Spring Break this year, survey finds

0

Contrary to widely held assumptions about the bad behavior of party-loving ‘spring breakers,’ a survey of 3,145 college students by RecoveryFirst.org has found that almost half (47%) who are currently on, or planning to go on spring break this year will NOT be drinking any alcohol. College students from North Carolina are more likely to stay sober this spring break – 52% say they will be practicing sobriety.

Complaints in recent years by locals in spring break hot spots have certainly not been unwarranted. Last year, spring breakers and tourists alike gathered along Miami’s Ocean Drive, enticed by its comparatively looser COVID restrictions as compared to other holiday destinations. At times, however, the situation got out of hand with some breaking into public fights, destroying restaurant property and causing danger to those around them. After the Miami Beach Police brought in SWAT teams to disperse crowds, the city decided to order an emergency 8:00 p.m. curfew at the time.

Despite these incidents, it appears there is a significant percentage of students who will have a sober spring break this year. This could be due to personal reasons, like having different interests outside of alcohol and/or drugs or testing out one of the popular social media sobriety trends, like #SoberCurious.

Along with other alcohol-free lifestyle trends, the idea of a sober lifestyle appears to be increasing in popularity among young people today; research has shown that Generation Z is drinking less than their parents’ generation did when they were young. One of the suggested reasons is a growing health and wellness movement, which means young people may be more concerned about their bodies, and how alcohol may negatively affect them. Interestingly, Marshall University in West Virginia will host a series of “Safer Spring Break” activities this year, which are focused on harm reduction and ensuring students’ well-being and health.

According to the survey, spring breakers from Delaware and Arkansas are the most likely to stay sober this year with two thirds declaring sobriety. Comparatively, only 15% of students from New Hampshire plan on staying sober.

Infographic showing sober spring breakers in each state

Authorities in some spring break hot spots are implementing measures that encourage sobriety. Miami Beach, for example, will be providing music, wellness and food experiences.

Despite Miami Beach’s efforts to ban sales of alcohol past 2:00 a.m., which was recently struck down allowing sales to continue until 5:00 a.m., the survey found that more than half (56%) of respondents said they think alcohol sales should indeed be restricted after 2:00 a.m. in popular spring break holiday destinations.

Another 25% of those who had been on spring break in the past said they felt pressure to drink alcohol during this time. Perhaps introducing a set of limitations could be helpful in terms of spring breakers’ safety, health and wellness during this time, too.

For those attempting to have a relaxing vacation during spring break, popular student destinations are precisely the locations to avoid because of the noise and rowdiness of constant drinking and partying. In fact, nearly 3 in 4 (73%) people who are planning on vacationing this spring said they will be avoiding any locations popular among students.

The survey also broke down which destinations non-spring breakers will be avoiding this year due to too many students and the results showed:

Miami: 32%

Daytona Beach: 17%

South Padre Island: 14%

Cancún: 14%

Cabo San Lucas: 12%

Panama City Beach: 12%

With a typical Spring Break vacation lasting around six days on average, the survey also discovered that the average drinker said they’re drunk three out of these days while on holiday – so for half the time of the entire duration.

CMPD’s Retail Theft Task Force Takes Down Crime Ring

0

This morning, CMPD held a press conference where they discussed the recent operations of the Retail Theft Task Force.

According to officers, there have already been 25 cases initiated by a robbery in 2022, with many thieves being repeat offenders. One busted retail theft crime ring was discovered to have 82 thousand dollars in cash, along with around 50 thousand dollars worth of new tools and 3 vehicles.

“We deserve better, our community deserves better, and our retail stores deserve better as well,” said CMPD Detective Anthony Finocchio.

What more do you think should be done to stop retail theft here in Charlotte?
