ABC’s Shark Tank Is Coming To Charlotte

shark-tank-is-coming-to-charlotteABC’s hit show “Shark Tank” is about to come to Charlotte in search of new businesses for its ninth season.

According to a press release from ABC, the open casting call will be held at CPCC’s Central Campus (Elizabeth) in their Small Business Center (on Charlottetowne Ave.) starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 29.

If you’re a business owner or inventor you can download their application here – Shark Tank Open Casting Call In Charlotte.

Business owners will have the opportunity to present their best one-minute pitch to a member of the casting team, just like on the show (only way shorter). You may have to get creative with your props, as ABC is not guaranteeing any access to power, internet, or audio/video equipment.

This will be a public casting call – anyone can present their idea, as long as you’re able to get there before all the wristbands are gone (we’d recommend arriving at least an hour early).

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery Just Announced It’s Expanding To A Massive New Facility In Cornelius

The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, Charlotte’s biggest craft beer maker, has just announced that it is about to open a massive new brewing facility in Cornelius.

The brewery’s new 51,000 square-foot facility will be located at 20401 Zion Ave., in Cornelius, NC, the location of the old MacLean Curtis facility, which moved up to Mooresville last year.

On their Facebook post they noted, “It’s true – We’re coming for you Cornelius! OMB is extremely excited to develop our newly acquired 24-acre property into a spectacular Brauhaus & Biergarten. We believe that this location will allow more Charlotteans to experience OMB and our beers first-hand…”

Their post also noted that in order to use even half of their new facility, the current North Carolina limits on craft breweries will need to be lifted. At this point, any craft breweries that make more than 25,000 barrels of beer a year are required to sign a contract with a distributor, who serves as a middleman handling delivery and sales – this basically limits the freedom of local breweries to offer affordable prices to local bars, bottle shops, and events.

Last year, OMB brewed 21,000 barrels, pushing it closer to the 25,000-barrel cap, which means that if the law isn’t changed at this point, they will only be able to use a fraction of their new Cornelius facility.

The company said that if the cap is lifted, they will be able to hire at least 100 new employees in Cornelius. They are asking everyone to sign their petition at http://craftfreedom.org/petition/ to help lift the cap.

White Supremacist In South Carolina Arrested For Attempted Shooting “in the spirit of Dylann Roof”

south-carolina-white-supremist-shootingAn undercover FBI agent has just arrested 29 year old Benjamin Thomas Samual McDowell for an attempted mass shooting “in the spirit of Dylann Roof”.

Benjamin was arrested last Wednesday after he purchased a .40 caliber Glock handgun and some ammo from an undercover FBI agent. According to the FBI agent’s report, he built several connections with other known white supremacists while recently serving time in prison.

He reportedly sent a Facebook message to an undercover FBI agent claiming to be a member of the Aryan Nations, asking for “iron” (slang for a gun).

When Benjamin met the undercover agent at a Myrtle Beach, he supposedly told the agent that “screaming ‘white power’” would not be enough to accomplish his goals.

“I got the heart to do that s***, but I don’t have the good training,” he said.

Benjamin said Dylann Roof inspired him to take up arms.

His intentions to commit the mass shooting was not only reflected from his conversations with the undercover agent, but also on social media, where he regularly ranted about his hatred for Jews, and his desire to ‘take them down’.

myrtle-beach-synagogueThis past December, he posted a link and picture to Myrtle Beach’s Temple Emanu-El Conservative Synagogue and wrote, “I love love to act what u think.”

Federal agents also cited several other social media postings laced with profanity and anti-Semitic sentiments that McDowell made over the past several months, many of them talked about and praised Charleston’s mass killer Dylann Roof.

With several reports of the KKK actively recruiting in the Carolinas, it seems that activity from white supremacists hate groups and individuals are continuing to rise.

Concord’s Alevo Plant Talking About Massive $251 Million Expansion – Creating Over 200 New Jobs

alevo-expansion-concord-ncAlevo’s massive 3.5 million square feet manufacturing facility has been open for less than 3 years, but they’re already talking about a major expansion to meet the ever growing demand of battery containers overseas.

They’re now considering investing over $251 million to expand their production capacity, creating 202 jobs in the process.

Concord’s City Council is now offering some very attractive incentives to try to push them toward the expansion.

The incentives are basically sectioned off in 2 phases over a 10 year period of time.

The phase 1 grant would require Alevo to pay $1.9 million in taxes, with $1.5 million reimbursed back to them, essentially netting the City of Concord $390,096 in revenue over the next 5 years from a property with a tax value of $77 million

The phase 2 grant would begin once the first major upgrades to the plant were made. It would would only require Alevo to pay in $3.6 million worth of taxes, and be reimbursed $2.8 million on $149 million property worth of property, netting the city $750,708 over 5 years.

Concord’s City Counsel feels that the lost revenue will be worth it if the additional 202 high-paying jobs are created in the city.

Alevo has not yet made a final decision about their new Concord expansion.

Runner’s Foot Impaled By Intentionally Placed Nail – 40 More Were Found On North Carolina Trail

North Carolina’s 1,100-acre Pinnacle Park is now closed after a runner stepped on an intentionally placed nail on the trail leading up to the Black Rock Summit. in Jackson County remains closed after a runner’s foot was impaled by a nail purposely placed on a popular trail that leads to the Black Rock Summit.

NC Department of Transportation, Sylva police officers, town maintenance workers, and several other volunteers scoured the trail yesterday using leaf blowers and metal detectors, looking for more nails.

According to the Sylva Police Department, 40 additional nails have already been discovered hammered into tree roots and logs along the ‘Assault on Black Rock’ trail.

There is now a $1,000 reward for any information that might lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for intentionally placing the nails.

madison-gilliland-missingPolice in Burke County have just released a statement asking for the public’s help in finding a runaway 14-year-old girl from Burke County, NC.

Madison Gilliland is about 5’3″ tall and weighs about 115 lbs, with green eyes and brown hair.

Her parents told police that the last time they saw her, she was wearing a camo-jacket, blue jeans, and brown boots.

Police say that she is most likely in the McDowell County/Buncombe County region:

Local Teen Battling Cancer Gets The Surprise Of His Life With 100 Exotic Cars In His Front Yard

This past weekend, a 19-year-old from Monroe, NC had his wish come true with a surprise car show.

RJ Swinney’s VIP car show was organized by Will Yarborough, the father of one of RJ’s good friends. Will told his car club’s Facebook group about RJ’s battle, and that he had always wanted to go to a car show, but was never able to, people then began spreading the word like crazy, and before long, an entire car show was organized on RJ’s front lawn…

On the day of the event, over 100 upgraded and exotic cars from all across North Carolina arrived in front of RJ’s front porch…

RJ even got to ride in some of his favorites:

Although the car show was for RJ, the organizers may have been blessed the most. After the show, Will Yarborough posted this on Facebook:

“Today was a really heartfelt day. A total of 320 cars lined up, to go to a sick boys house, that none of us had ever even met, so he could see show cars one last time before he left this earth. We were notified that he had a blood transfusion yesterday, and that he would have a boost of energy for a little bit. He personally walked around acres of land looking at every single car. Admiring them. When he got over to me he said ” I’ve never ridden in a Ferrari before” I said ” well then let’s go!” His eyes lit up and a huge smile came across his face. He asked if he could bring his go-pro camera so he could record it and remember it. To see such innocence and minuscule wants from a boy who knows that he only has a couple days to live was truly touching. He jumped in and we took off! He loved it! When we got back he said ” will you come ride with me in my car” and of course I did. We talked and admired all the cars. Then he asked if he could sit in the drivers seat and take a picture. And that’s exactly what we did.

I really think today meant more to me than it did him. I learned a valuable lesson today. That feeling I got from seeing the smile on his face, and knowing that I was lucky enough to be a part of making his last days happy, is a treasure in itself. The lord has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. And to be able to use those blessings to help bless others, is what this life is all about. Today is a day that I will definitely remember. God bless you RJ.”

AJ may still be battling cancer, but now he knows he’s not alone, and that he’s truly loved.

UNCC 49ers’ Starting Quarterback and Young Brother of Greg Olsen Was Arrested On Rape Charges

University of North Carolina at Charlotte quarterback, and youngest brother of Carolina Panther’s Greg Olsen, was just arrested for rape yesterday, according to the CMPD.

Kevin Olsen was arrested yesterday for second-degree forcible rape, cyberstalking, assault on a female and second-degree forced sex.

Kevin became the UNCC 49ers’ starting quarterback last spring.

The University of North Carolina Charlotte just released the following statement:
“The University administration has been in close communication with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department regarding its arrest of student-athlete Kevin Olsen Sunday afternoon.The allegations in this incident took place off campus. This incident occurred a week after a separate, unrelated case of alleged on-campus sexual assault involving acquaintances. Olsen has been suspended from Charlotte Athletics, and the University is reviewing the case consistent with its disciplinary procedures. Due to the ongoing CMPD investigation and federal protections on student information, the University will have no further comment on the investigation at this time.”
The date of his trial is still pending, we will update this article as we receive new information.

A new restaurant has been announced next to The Common Market’s new South End location.

The Zeppelin will offer Seasonal Small Plates, Craft Cocktails, Fine Wines, Local Charcuterie & Cheeses (think Dean & DeLuca meets Roosters). It will be set in a ‘Steampunk-themed’ interior that will attempt to highlight South End’s rich history.

zepplin-restaurant-south-end“Zeppelin is excited to provide a much needed upscale casual dinner & craft cocktail lounge in the Southend Community.  We are a proud addition to the West Tremont Avenue corridor which will grow into the central hub of Charlotte’s fastest growing neighborhood,” commented Zeppelin’s co-owner Jonathan Swope. “Zeppelin scouted locations for over a year until we found a building that preserves Charlotte’s, and specifically Southend’s, rich history which keeps getting torn down brick-by-brick.”

The new restaurant and bar will include about 80 seats in a 2,300 sq ft interior space with another 30 seats on a 750 sq ft outdoor patio.

The food and drinks will be created by a trained chef from Johnson & Wales (Jonathan said he didn’t want the chef’s name to be released yet).

Lowes Announced They’re About To Hire 600 New Full-Time Workers In North Carolina

lowes-hiring-new-workers-copyLowe’s corporate just announced that they are planning to hire at least 600 new full-time employees at their support facility about 90 miles northwest of Charlotte in Wilkesboro.

Most of the jobs will be focused on customer care, including scheduling maintenance, installations, and repairs, as well as production coordinators, field project specialists, supervisors and store managers.

Lowe’s wants to expand their do-it-yourself support as well as online buying decisions. In their recent press release, Jennifer Weber noted, “We want to be there every step of the way as customers move this work forward, whether it’s answering questions for (do-it-yourself) customers or coordinating the work for them through installation services.”

This new expansion comes on the heals of Lowe’s recent announcement of hiring over 1,000 new seasonal workers in our state.

The leading home improvement supplier currently employs about 4,000 workers at its corporate offices in Mooresville, and about 2,000 at its support facility in Wilkesboro.
