A 3-Alarm Fire Erupted and A Bystander Was Shot On College Street in Uptown Charlotte

This afternoon a 3-alarm fire and a shooting took place on College Street in Uptown Charlotte.

The fire on College Street started at roughly 2:30pm in the kitchen of Roosters Restaurant and quickly spread into the duct work;

The shooting occurred about 1 block south of the fire in the Epicenter. According to police, a fight broke out between 2 individuals and one of the individuals pulled out a gun and shot at the other. An innocent bystander was hit by the shot and was then rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

A suspect was arrested at about 6pm this evening;

After 65 Charlotte firefighters battled the Roosters fire for several hours, they were finally able to get it under control.

The fire and the shooting do not appear to be related.

With Oct. 1 being World Vegetarian Day and Nov. 1 being World Vegan Day and research showing that skipping meat can save the average person at least $750 per year, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2019’s Best Cities for Vegans & Vegetarians.

To determine the best and cheapest places for following a plant-based diet, the site compared the 100 largest cities across 17 key indicators of vegan- and vegetarian-friendliness. The data set ranges from the share of restaurants serving meatless options to the cost of groceries for vegetarians to salad shops per capita.

Charlotte ranked just behind Pittsburgh and Houston, coming in at #20 on the top 100 list;

McCaffrey and Allen Enter The Record Books After Panthers’ Acrobatic Victory Over The Texans

Yesterday Christian McCaffrey, Kyle Allen, and the Carolina Defense led the Panthers to their second win of the season against the Texans.

Our defense was unrelenting against against a normally explosive offense, holding the Texans to just 264 total yards, star QB Deshaun Watson to just 160 passing yards, and WR DeAndre Hopkins to just 5 catches for 41 yards.

In spite of several sacks and fumbles, the offense still managed to score 4 times (1 touchdown and 3 field goals).

Perhaps two of the most impressive plays of the game on offense were Allen’s ninja duck against JJ Watt…

and McCaffrey’s juggle-catch on 3rd and 6 to just barely give the Panthers a needed 1st down;

Yesterday’s game also put both McCaffrey and Allen in the record books;

Oprah Winfrey Just Donated Over $1.15 Million To Charlotte Students

This past weekend, Oprah Winfrey shocked a Charlotte crowd when she announced a $1.15 million donation toward local scholarships in the United Negro College Fund.

The OWN network owner made the surprise announcement Saturday afternoon during her speech at Charlotte’s 17th annual Maya Angelou Women Who Lead Luncheon.

While she was speaking the running tally of the fundraiser was hovering just over $1.15 million. She suddenly made the shocking announcement that she would be matching the total of everything that was raised that day.

United Negro College Fund officials in Charlotte were hoping the event would raise at least $500,000 for local scholarships – with the surprise matching gift, that goal was more than quadrupled.

Oprah will be returning to Charlotte this coming January for a massive public event at the Spectrum Center.

Planning for your own funeral is never an easy decision. However, as is with most things in life, one must be practical and have the right measures in place. Today, we’re going to go over some of the different finance options you have when it comes to paying for your funeral. We will go over different policies, insurances, and trusts that you can opt for to ensure that all expenses for your funeral are covered.

Regardless of what path you choose, you should know that experts discourage the usage of the payment methods given under this article. We’ll be discussing the reasons for this negative opinion as well!

REVOCABLE TRUST

Under a revocable trust, you are under a legal obligation, by way of contract, to pay for your funeral’s projected cost in installments. A funeral director will have to be appointed as a trustee of the trust and will be responsible for making deposits of your installments into an interest-bearing account. Upon your death, the funds are withdrawn by the funeral director and are used to pay for your funeral.

WHOLE-LIFE POLICY

Just like any other policy, the subscriber will be paying regular periodic premiums. A beneficiary is named under the policy who shall receive the payout from the policy. The beneficiary is restricted to use the funds in accordance with the policy and solely for funeral expenses. Depending on the policy, the remaining amount could either transfer over to the estate and or be kept by the beneficiary. Depending on the state you live in, you may just have to nominate a funeral home director as the beneficiary rather than a family member or friend.

BURIAL INSURANCE

Under this policy, all costs of your funeral are covered and the beneficiary is allowed to use the death benefit however they choose. The restrictions that are found in whole-life policies are not found under burial insurance policies.

CRITICISM

There are many reasons why experts are skeptical and sometimes outright against such payment plans. The first reason is that the funeral home nominated under these policies and trusts could go out of business, effectively rendering these plans useless. Another reason is that the funeral home may lose its reputation over the years and, upon your death, your family may want to arrange your funeral at a more respectful place. However, they would be stuck as the terms of the policy or trust will have to be followed.

Economists have also stated that the pay-out from these trusts and policies are not significant when compared against the amount of premium one pays. Also, sometimes a certain time period has to lapse before the entitlement to the fund triggers. You could die a year after subscribing to a policy only to find out that you would be eligible for a payout after the five-year mark.

Also, if you happen to not make your family aware of any such arrangement, they could just end up paying out of pocket at another funeral home without knowing that there is money stored away for that very purpose.

North Carolina is a proud sporting state that boasts several major and minor league sports teams, and hosts some of the biggest sporting events on the calendar. From now and over the next 12 months, one major event and two of the state’s major league teams have a shot at bringing some memorable occasions home.

Following a season of fun, success, and sticking it to the doubters, the Carolina Hurricanes – sorry, the “Bunch of Jerks” – have a shot at building on their breakout season and bringing the Stanley Cup Playoffs back to Raleigh. At the end of September, the first elimination round of the 2019 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series playoffs comes to Charlotte, which is bound to bring an adrenaline rush to those attending. Then, there’s also the Carolina Panthers who, despite early season struggles, could sneak through and steal the NFC South.

Canes for the playoffs again?

One of the single greatest storylines of last season was the Carolina Hurricanes embracing Don Cherry’s label of them as a “Bunch of Jerks” and turning it into inspiration to bind the team and the fans. From the mighty defensive efforts to the Storm Surge, last year was a great year to be a Canes fan. The team has seen its share of turn around this offseason, with surprise hero Curtis McElhinney, as well as Calvin de Haan, Gregg McKegg, and Micheal Ferland leaving the team.

However, the Canes have brought in Erik Haula, Ryan Dzingel, James Reimer, Gustav Forsling, and Brian Gibbons to bolster the lines, and the team has a plethora of talent to bring into the NHL with the Charlotte Checkers claiming the Calder Cup last season. Last season, the team rode their momentum to the Conference Finals after qualifying through a wild card place. As noted by NHL betting tips experts Ghost Insights, if the young team continues to build, they could claim a place in the divisional places. After all, they were only one point off of the fading Pittsburgh Penguins last season.

Here comes NASCAR!

The 2019 Bank of America Roval 400 at Charlotte is one of the most exciting events on the motorsports calendar this year. Kicking off NASCAR’s playoff elimination rounds, this is the second-ever Monster Energy Cup Series race at the Roval layout.

Last season, an epic collision during the very last lap proved to be decisive with the leaders being taken out to shake up the order. This year, Martin Truex Jr. is favored to take the weekend having come so close to winning the inaugural Charlotte Roval race. He also leads in the points and wins column, boasting six victories through 2019 already.

Panthers might just pull it off

The Carolina Panthers have endured a tough start to the 2019 NFL season. Cam Newton has clearly been injured under center, finally succumbing to his foot injury, and the defense hasn’t been as sharp as it could have been at times. Their saving grace? Run CMC. Christian McCaffery looks primed to have another grand season, and given the Arizona Cardinals didn’t follow in the footsteps of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by snuffing out the talented back, it’s safe to say that some defenses will give him the inch needed to burn them down.

Until Newton returns, it’ll be up to the likes of McCaffrey, Luke Kuechly, D.J. Moore, Greg Olsen, and Eric Reid to flex their star power and add to their first win of the season in Week 3. The iron is hot, so now is the time to strike, as the NFC South is in flux. The New Orleans Saints are without Drew Brees until around mid-season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are as inconsistent as ever, and the Atlanta Falcons’ seemingly scary offense can’t get going. Divisional rivals will continue to slip up, so if they can kick on from their first win, the Panthers might just slip into a playoff place.

There’s a lot to be excited about as North Carolinan sports fans, with NASCAR coming to Charlotte, the Hurricanes looking to break into the upper-echelons of the NHL, and Panthers in for a very exciting campaign.

Guerilla Poets Empowering Charlotte Communities Through The Arts

EncoreEvery fourth Saturday, Guerilla Poets host their monthly Encore: Open Mic series at The Last Word bookstore in north Charlotte. While open mics are common around Charlotte, Encore uses the arts to empower people to unite for change.

This diverse open-mic encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and express themselves. Performers can share an international potluck of cultural dishes before show time, and free painting supplies are provided so everyone can get creative.

Encore is one of many free events organized by Guerilla Poets. Founded in December 2012, Guerilla Poets is a collection of artists dedicated to helping the community. The group offers free art programs across North Carolina, and even operates a United Kingdom branch.

Guerilla Poets founder Shane Manier said besides Encore, the group host two other open-mics. Free the Mic in South Charlotte gives poetry workshops before performances, and One Mic Stand in Kannapolis accepts donations for local charities.

Although only Encore is considered family friendly, Manier says performers strive to be considerate.

“If there’s any kids at any of our open mics we try to watch our language and things like that,” she said. “But, we do encourage strong themes, because the whole idea is to give people a platform to get free.”

Manier said events like open mics are usually where they recruit members. It was one open mic at a Lincolnton, NC café, which inspired her to create the group.

While reading her poem, “Sitting beside the fence with death and a pack of cigarettes,” an old man coming in for food noticed her. After she finished, the man threw his arms around Manier and tearfully thanked her for saving his life.

“He was like, ‘I was going to go home and kill myself, and I didn’t know you guys were doing this,’” she said. “‘I came in here and heard that, and I just want you to know that it really touched me, and I’m not going to now.’”

Seeing how poetry could affect people, Manier said she wanted to help others through the arts. After calling out on Facebook, she formed Guerilla Poets with four members. Like all members, she took a code name which reflected her work. She chose the alias Riot.

Originally a flash poetry mob, the group gradually shifted to community volunteering. Last year, they became a 501c art charity, and now have partnerships with organizations like Charlotte Art League and Arts & Science Council.

Most Guerilla Poets services revolve around youth outreach. Manier said one of their biggest projects is Vibrations, a monthly art exhibit at Charlotte Art League. It features artwork from at-risk teens in their workshops with the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Program, TYM, Inc., Time Out Youth and Crisis Assistance Ministries. All art sale proceeds go directly to artists.

Guerilla Poets

She says the event shows teens what they’re going through is temporary, and the city is willing to support them. Working with teenagers is something Manier wanted to do ever since her own rough teen years.

Due to her father’s work, she was raised traveling. Growing up on the road exposed her to things most kids couldn’t relate to. She saw how corrupt the world was, and began to struggle after her fathers’ sudden death. Unfortunately, she never received the right kind of help.

From an early age, she used writing and drawing to talk about her experiences. However; she didn’t truly become involved until realizing how the arts could touch people.

Guerilla Poets members often share their talents with youths. This summer, they gave free art workshops at West Boulevard Library, through Arts & Science Council’s Culture Blocks program. These all-ages classes took place the first Saturday of the month, and will resume in November.

Tarik Kiley says his workshop, History of Hip-Hop Thought, covers hip-hop’s development from the early ‘70s to mid-2000s. From Gil Scott-Heron to Migos. Kiley, who goes by Mixed Thoughts, has been involved since the beginning, and has a long musical history.

Originally from Baltimore, he learned Afro-Cuban music in high school, and began producing beats for friends. At 18, he moved to Charlotte. Unable to start a band, he started writing his own raps. He met Manier and another original member while freestyling at open mics.

“I went to an event in NoDa were she and he were performing. I was so impressed,” said Kiley. “Shane was so humble, she was so open to other people’s ideas that I asked her if I could join.”

The group was a perfect place for Kiley, who has years of volunteer experience working with charities like Hands on Charlotte. His community networking connected them to Culture Blocks.

Kiley wants to expand their music outreach and teach more. He created his workshop after substitute teaching at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and seeing rapping students ignorant of its history. By better understanding hip-hop, he hopes students will improve their craft.

Darwan Pursoo says he’s learned a lot from the students in Kiley’s workshop. Teaching is new to Pursoo, who said before Guerilla Poets, all he focused on was promoting his music.

A life-long rapper, he first got hooked listening to mid ‘90s acts like Bone Thugs and Harmony and Tupac. He started rapping during middle school in Huntington, West Virginia, and began releasing music once he came to Charlotte three years ago.

New to Charlotte, and looking for friends with similar interest, he attended a Guerilla Poets open mic. That’s where he met Manier. The two bonded, and she told him about the group. Within a few months, he ended up joining.

Pursoo, aka Nitewing, said Guerilla Poets made him perform with the mentality of giving back. He’s taught at juvenile teens workshops, and read poetry to the elderly. He says volunteering taught him about different cultures throughout Charlotte.

“There’s a huge difference, I’d say, between knowing about stuff like LBGT community, and then going to a session where you actually hear them do poetry, and you hear their issues directly from them,” he said.

Other members say being in the group has changed them. Daniel Gurley said helping children, and seeing their innocence and potential reminded him of his own humanity.

Gurley, or Versifier, learned about the group through Manier. When not volunteering, he plays guitar and m.c.’s at open mics. He wasn’t always comfortable sharing his skills. At first, he felt anxious about interacting with the community, but learned to use his strengths to help others.

He hopes they will help more with homeless supportive housing, and start a garden program. As a country boy raised to garden by his father, Gurley says he knows it would benefit city kids.

“I mean, the city’s like concrete, and hard. Metallic,” he said. “I think if a lot of, especially youth, if the youth can see nature more often they would be able to reconnect, or connect with something bigger than themselves.”

Currently, the group is in the process of restarting Save the Humans, a self-sustainable farmland project. Manier says they try to tailor programs where the need is, and believes two problems with the arts, and community should be addressed.

She says there is a staleness in the arts and a renaissance must occur. Artist must thrive together creatively, instead of competing against each other.

In neighborhoods like west Charlotte, she said people must see the need for groups like Guerilla Poets. She says all the negativity in the world and in the media makes people feel unable to change things. Through art, she wants to inspire them to think differently.

“If you show somebody that they’re not powerless then that goes away,” she said. “Everyone really, deep down, they do care. It’s just, they’re frustrated, and they feel powerless. And once you show them that they’re not, their entire life starts to change.”

She said Guerilla Poet has been amazing, and is surprised with its growth. One reason for that, she says, is its passionate members. The UK branch started when a famous punk band associated with ex-member Joshua Bartley, codename Agent Orange, shouted them out in a podcast. British poets soon began contacting the group, asking how they could do something similar.

Having Guerilla Poets in her life showed Manier that people from different ages, different cultures and different beliefs can come together to do good.

“Everybody does incredible work together, create such incredible things together,” she said. “It really makes me believe in the whole, people can co-exist. As long as you strip off this other manipulation and these other things, and it’s really beautiful.”

NC Senate Wants High Schools to Make Personal Finance Classes Mandatory

States across the country are pushing to have personal finance added to the mandatory curriculum for high school students. Pennsylvania lawmakers have made the push this week, but North Carolina lawmakers made the push in mid-summer.

The NC state Senate voted 42-3 on a bill that would require high school students across the state to complete a personal finance class to be able to graduate.

The class would cover the true cost of credit, car loans, mortgages, credit scores and college loans. Lawmakers across the country want to better prepare students for their financial future by helping students better manage their money. 

“Individuals often cause significant damages to their financial lives in their younger years. The damage can be extensive,” explains Scott Langdon of Money Task Force.

Mandatory personal finance would help students avoid the personal loan trap that 35% of millennials mark as their biggest financial milestone. Student loan debt has soared, and many of these students will end their college education with over $40,000 in debt to repay. 

Senator Jay Chaudhuri championed the finance class and pushed for it to be a standalone class. The amendment was rejected by backers.

Teachers have come out against the bill, with social studies teachers lodging the most complaints. Social studies teachers claim that personal finance is already taught in civics class and claim that the issue is deeper than understanding finances. One teacher claims that systematic issues, such as lack of living wages and benefits, are the real issue and not lack of personal finance knowledge.

Nationwide, nineteen states have pushed for financial literacy in schools, up from 13 in 2011. These schools require that their students pass a personal finance class to obtain their high school diploma.

NC teachers are concerned that the addition of a personal finance class will push out classes on U.S. history to make room for a new personal finance class. Students are required to pass four social studies classes to graduate: Civics and Economics, World History, American History 1 and American History 2.

The personal finance requirement would prevent the State Board of Education from requiring more than four classes to be required for social studies. The two required courses under the law would be civics and personal finance, meaning that either American History 2 or World History would be removed from the curriculum.

North Carolina is only one of two states in the country which has multiple American History classes.
