With online businesses, start-ups, and gig-based careers at an all-time high, co-working spaces are becoming more prevalent than ever before.

There are currently over 30 co-working spaces around the Queen City. Based on online reviews, social media comments, and members’ feedback, the following list contains what we believe to be the top 7 coworking companies in Charlotte;

#7 Advent Coworking

Advent is a comprehensive coworking space just East of of Uptown in the Belmont neighborhood with tons of events, an art gallery, podcast room, outside patio, and free coffee and wifi.

Some online reviews said parking wasn’t the greatest for a space outside of Uptown, and that the meeting rooms can get crowded at times, but if a buzz of creative types inspires you, this might be your place.

#6 WeWork

By far the biggest coworking company in Charlotte, WeWork is a global powerhouse that is working to connect entrepreneurs across the globe. They currently have over 400,000 members with 400 locations in 99 cities across 26 different countries. Here in Charlotte, they just opened their 3rd massive facility in South End’s new RailYard development.

In addition to wifi, coffee, and scheduled events, many consider their most unique and alluring benefit to be the ability for members to book rooms at other locations.

Their different locations charge between $320-$350 per month for regular membership, $470-$550 for your own desk, and $620 – $18,400 for your own office.

#5 Packard Place

One of Charlotte’s first Uptown coworking spaces, Packard Place has helped to launch many of Charlotte’s most successful startups, with members raising over $1 billion in total venture capitol since Packard Place first launched in 2010.

The founders of the space focus much of their attention on building community, offering a monthly breakfast and over 350 annual events for members, in addition to free coffee, wifi, and all the other standard perks.

They charge $99 per month for regular membership and $500-$1,000 for your own office.

This unique space was built into the side of the historic Atherton Mill building in South End, just steps from Not Just Coffee, Luna’s Living Kitchen, Big Ben British Restaurant & Irish Pub, Vin Master, O-Ku Sushi, and Atherton Market.

Members of The Mill enjoy private community events, Enderly Coffee brewed fresh daily, free parking, WiFi, and printing, conference rooms, and plenty of inspiration and collaboration.

The Launch Factory is designed to be Charlotte’s first upscale co-working space, located just 1 mile west of Uptown on Wilkinson, they feature competitive pricing for brand-new startups, all they way up to established companies with multiple employees.

The facility offers full access to free coffee from local roasters, private booths for phone calls or brainstorming sessions, conference rooms, AV equipment, a large presentation screen, SONOS sound system, and gigabit Wi-Fi w/ SecurEdge.

Perhaps the most laid-back co-working space in Charlotte, located just .5 miles west of Uptown in FreeMoreWest (walking distance to the 3rd Legion brewery location), Blanq Canvass offers ample parking, free beer (if the fridge isn’t stocked with what you want, you can pick up your favorite brand and get reimbursed), coffee, wifi, putt-putt golf, ping-pong, and epic views of Charlotte’s skyline.

All of their memberships are month-to-month and offer unlimited 24/7 access to the space.

#1 Hygge Coworking (pronounced hoo-ga)

Hygge the biggest local coworking company in Charlotte and they offer the most facilities and amenities out of all the companies here in the Queen City.

They feature a total of 5 locations in West Charlotte, North Charlotte, and Uptown, as well as a fully equipped podcast studio and separate photo studio.

They charge $149 per month for regular membership, $269 for your own desk, and $650+ for your own office. Their podcast studio is $15 an hour and their photo studio is $40 an hour for members.

A new public elementary school developed and operated by education experts at UNC Charlotte will open at the former Amay James Pre-K Center starting in August 2020.

Niner University Elementary at Amay James (NUE) is the sixth school across the state created in response to the North Carolina General Assembly’s UNC Laboratory School Initiative, a program created to provide enhanced educational programming to students in low-performing schools.

NUE will strive to create lifelong learners and responsible, caring citizens through an authentic and meaningful curriculum.

“We’ve spent the last year refining an already strong academic program and plan of support for our students and families,” said Pamela Broome, principal of NUE. “We are thrilled to open Niner University Elementary at Amay James and look forward to working with and in this historic Charlotte community.”

In its first year of operation, NUE will serve 150 students in grades K-2, adding an additional grade level each year through 2024. At capacity, the school will serve 300 students in grades K-5. NUE will be operated by UNC Charlotte but will receive support services from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, including transportation and meals for students.

Dozens of UNC Charlotte faculty and staff from across campus contributed to the school’s development.

“We have a few important priorities including training the teachers of tomorrow and serving our community,” said Teresa Petty, interim dean of the Cato College of Education. “We don’t just study theory, we bring it to life through practice and Niner University Elementary is a great example of this model in action.”

NUE’s rich learning environment will incorporate literacy across all subject areas. Teachers will engage classes creatively, including question and project-based instruction, and students will work together to explore complex, real-world tasks. Early curriculum will include a focus on helping students read proficiently by third grade, a crucial benchmark for future academic success.

In addition to academic rigor, the school will have a “whole child” focus and support achievement by engaging students outside the classroom. A committee of UNC Charlotte’s Cato College of Education faculty has identified a social emotional learning curriculum that focuses on creating a supportive community and teaches skills in areas like self-awareness and responsible decision making.

NUE is developing a school-based mental health program, too, and plans to offer resources, including play therapy. The school will staff a licensed counselor, as well as other health care professionals who will work in coordination with University faculty and interns to support total wellness for students.

Additionally, NUE will provide the Cato College of Education the opportunity to train and support the growth of teachers, counselors and school leaders. Teacher preparation and development at NUE will be centered on embedded, multi-semester clinicals for teachers in training. Selected candidates from the Cato College of Education will spend their junior year at the school, which will offer extensive opportunities to observe and practice what they have learned.
