US Department of Labor Fines 12 McDonalds in North Carolina For Violating Child Labor Laws

0

After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), Mt. Airy Partners Inc. – a Summerfield, North Carolina-based enterprise operating 12 McDonald’s restaurants in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad Region – has paid a civil money penalty of $17,586 for violating child labor requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The WHD investigation determined Mt. Airy Partners employed 35 employees, ages 14- and 15-years-old, across its 12 locations. The employer violated child labor requirements by allowing minors to work outside of the hours allowed for that age group, when the law limits their hours to working no more than three hours on a school day and between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the period of Labor Day through June 1. The employer also violated FLSA recordkeeping requirements when it failed to maintain proof of age for most of its minor employees.

“Child labor laws exist to strike a balance between providing a meaningful work experience for young people and keeping them safe on the job so that the work does not jeopardize their health and well-being or educational opportunities. Employers must not allow 14 and 15-year-olds to work beyond legally permitted hours,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock, in Raleigh, North Carolina. “We encourage all employers to review their employment obligations and to contact the Wage and Hour Division with any questions they may have.”

The Department offers numerous resources to ensure employers have the tools they need to understand their responsibilities and to comply with federal law, such as online videos and confidential calls to local WHD offices.

For more information about the FLSA, child labor and other laws enforced by the Wage and Hour Division, contact the toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243). Information is also available at https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd, including a search tool for workers who may be owed back wages collected by WHD.

“The mission of Wahine Classic is to empower girls of all ages, build their self-confidence and self-esteem, and promote physical, mental, and emotional wellness,” said Jo Pickett, event organizer. “The atmosphere is friendly and enjoyable, where many girls get their start and their first taste of surfing competition. Everybody’s happy and laughing.”
“Competing with all girls creates a fun atmosphere where we can be competitive but become even better friends,” said Callie Hertz of Wilmington, winner of three Wahine Classic titles in 2019 (Junior Women Shortboard, Girls Under 16 Shortboard, and Junior Women Longboard). “If it hadn’t been for the Wahine Classic, I am not sure I would have gotten into competitive surfing.”
“2017 was my first year to compete in the Wahine Classic,” added Hertz. “That was my first surf contest ever. I’m really excited to compete again this year. I know there will be even more girls, which is always a good thing. The encouraging vibes at the Wahine Classic helped me gain the confidence to compete in other surf contests.”
“It is promising to see surfing and more watersports opportunities for ladies and girls,” said Mary Baggett, co-owner of host hotel Blockade Runner Beach Resort. “With surfing now an Olympic sport, one day, we hope to see our North Carolina Wahine Classic girls on the podium wearing gold, silver, or bronze.”
“The health and safety of our participants and spectators are of paramount importance,” said Pickett. “All athletes will be provided face masks and required to comply with local and state safety regulations to combat the spread of COVID19.”
Participants required to wear face masks and to practice social distancing

“At 16, I am figuring out my long-term goals,” said Hertz. “Whatever I do, I hope that surfing will be a big part of it.”

Charlotte’s First Indoor Mini Golf Cocktail Lounge Officially Reopening After Covid-19 Shutdown

0

Putt-Putt fans rejoice – Charlotte’s biggest, first, and only indoor miniature golf and cocktail lounge just announced they are reopening after being shut down for nearly 4 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stroke Charlotte combines a high-tech nine-hole miniature golf mini-golf course with a 1970s-inspired cocktail lounge in the heart of Plaza Midwood.

The unique concept was the brainchild of Scott and Ashleigh Gadd, who sold Charlotte’s popular ‘Axe Club of America’ back in October and decided to create something a little less dangerous and a little more unique.

“From our decor, to our course, to the drinks at our lounge, everything is meant to surprise you, keep you interested, and to have fun,” Stroke’s CEO Ashleigh Gadd told me. “We may throw you for a couple loops, but that’s the intention.”

The unique course starts at hole #1 by the front door, then snakes around plans, unique seating arrangements, countless drink holders, and some truly unique surprises along the way. Once you’ve played the course and had a few drinks, Strokes also offers a free-to-play arcade putting games to satisfy even the most ardent indoor putt-putt fanatic.

In addition to a truly unique game of mini-golf, Stroke also offers some of the most creative cocktails in the Queen City, featuring 9 signature drinks that change seasonlly, including the popular ‘New South Sour’ with strawberry wine and the Bermuda Thousand with 1000 Piers Gin from NC’s Hackney Distillery.

After you’ve worked up an appetite dominating the greens, Stroke also features a 9-item small bites menu with clubhouse inspired dishes.

Stroke Charlotte is located at 1318 Pecan Ave in Plaza Midwood.

You can find out more about Stroke, as well as what changes they have made to help keep people as safe as possible during COVID-19 on their website here.

Panthers Owner Creates New Scholarship at Johnson C. Smith University

0

David and Nicole Tepper will contribute $250,000 to aid deserving Johnson C. Smith University students as they overcome financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students and their families have been negatively impacted by the loss of jobs during this unprecedented time and many would not have the financial resources to return to school were it not for this generous gift. All of the funds will be used to help students return for the 2020-2021 academic year.

JCSU President Clarence D. Armbrister said the gift will allow students to continue pursuing their dreams of earning a college education while also helping JCSU prevent a decrease in enrollment as the University navigates the operational challenges in higher education at this time. “We are elated the Teppers chose to invest in the students at Johnson C. Smith University,” Armbrister said.

“The donation to the University affirms their commitment to minority students in the Charlotte community and beyond. The continued success of historically Black universities like JCSU is at a critical point,” said Armbrister. “Partnerships like this are essential to sustaining HBCUs which are educating the next generation of leaders in the workplace and in the community. With COVID-19’s significantly disproportionate impact on people of color, these scholarship funds could not have been donated at a better time for our students.”

Scholarship funds will benefit as many as 70 returning students who demonstrate financial need. Establishing the David and Nicole Tepper Scholarship at JCSU demonstrates the Teppers’ belief that providing deserving minority students with access to a high quality, affordable college education is integral to closing the inequality gap.

“Nicole and I have visited Johnson C. Smith and have gotten to know President Armbrister and some of the leaders at the school,” David Tepper said. “This pandemic has put a lot of people in a tough spot, particularly students who are trying to complete their education and earn their degrees. Hopefully, this contribution can help. This institution means a lot to this community and we look forward to building on our relationship in the future.”

The Teppers’ charitable efforts focus on the core beliefs that everyone deserves an education and access to healthcare resources, and that no one should go to bed hungry. David Tepper is the founder and president of Appaloosa Management, L.P. and owner of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and Charlotte’s Major League Soccer team.

Great Ways to Connect with Friends while Being at Home

0

COVID-19 hasn’t just kept us home—it has denied us in-person contact, leaving entire communities feeling lonely and anxious. Here are six creative ways to catch up with family and friends during a time of social distancing.

Setup Online Dates

Hearing the voices of friends and family over the phone is good, but it’s even more powerful and fulfilling when you see each other’s faces. Just like you would plan to have a coffee date with friends or co-workers on the weekend, you can still meet up online.

Send a Zoom invite or a Google Hangout link that people can open on their smartphones, tablets, or laptops. Everyone can drink whatever they have on hand, and you can all spend time together virtually, safe but connected.

Start A Book Club

Choose a book that you all enjoy reading and meet up to discuss it. A book club not only gives you a reason to meet up online, but it encourages reading to fill up your alone time. If you do not have a particular title, you can always buy it online or borrow it virtually from a digital library.

Use Social Media For Good

During a pandemic, we find ourselves spending more time online. Take the opportunity to communicate with friends and family through social media. Share experiences of your daily life and encourage others to stay safe by prioritising their health.

Social Distance Workouts

Self-quarantine shouldn’t be a justification to ignore your wellbeing. A workout routine can improve your immune system, but solitary exercise can be a lonely affair, and it is often difficult to stay motivated. Thankfully, video chatting and social media make it easier to engage in connected workouts.

You can set up a common workout time with a friend or loved one. The workout could be anything from yoga or weightlifting to cardio and martial arts drills. The most important thing is to do it together with a friend, or five. You can all motivate each other in real-time and hold each other accountable to push harder in those home-based workouts.

Multiplayer Gaming

Online gaming provides a fantastic way to stay connected with friends while you relax. The choice of play-offs is vast enough to keep you going for months (even years), from chilled games, like Minecraft, to cooperative strategy games, like Jackbox.

Online casinos are responding to COVID-19 and self-isolation by offering your favourite sports virtually, like horse racing. You can play with friends and other enthusiasts from across the globe as if you were together in the same room.

Casino online games also offer a great way to pocket some change while stuck at home.

Learn a New Skill

While social distancing and staying healthy are the priorities, you also have a fantastic opportunity to increase your skill set across any digital platform. Consider learning something new, like cooking, sewing, graphic design, or creating music with a loved one or a group.

There are millions of free tutorials on YouTube and other online platforms to keep you interested and connected to friends and family whenever you are stuck at home.

Simple Solutions to Romancing Your Partner

0

Everyone loves to have a little romance in their life, and when couples first get together, there is usually a lot of romance. However, as time goes on and you settle into your daily life, the romance can end up taking a back seat. This is often because of other commitments that take over such as looking after a home, raising a family, and focusing on your career.

While all of these things are important, it is vital that you still make the effort to be romantic with your partner. There are lots of ways in which you can do this, and many of these methods will not break the bank. When it comes to your physical relationship, you can often spice things up with products like adult toys such as anal toys. However, when it comes to the romantic side of your relationship, you need to think from the heart.

In this article, we will explore a few simple ways to add more romance to your relationship.

What You Can Do

There are various ways in which you can be more romantic in your relationship, and it is well worth doing this in order to help keep the magic alive. Some of the things you can plan are:

A Romantic Picnic

One very simple and wonderful romantic gesture is to plan a romantic picnic for your partner. You can whisk them off to a local place of natural beauty where you can both relax, enjoy good food and great company, spend quality time together, and watch the world go by. This gives you a chance to escape together and enjoy nature, sit and unwind, and enjoy one another’s company. It is also a very affordable way to be romantic.

A Lovely Meal at Home

Another thing you can do in order to be romantic is to surprise your partner with a wonderful home-cooked meal. Even if you are not very experienced when it comes to cooking, you can look up romantic recipes online that are easy to follow. You can create the perfect setting and atmosphere, and you will be able to choose from indoor or garden dining depending on the weather. Make sure you add the finishing touches with soft lights and romantic music, or fairy lights if you dine outside.

A Weekend Away

If you have a little more time and a slightly bigger budget, you could arrange a surprise weekend away. You do not have to go over the top when it comes to splashing out – a romantic camping break is affordable and means you can enjoy adventure, excitement, nature, and some quality time away together. You can also look at other options such as a city break, some time at the beach, or a few days at a lakeside cabin among other things.

These are just some of the ways in which you can be more romantic with your partner, and this can then help to add some magic back into your relationship.
