Governor Cooper Announced Reopening Of Event Venues at 7% Capacity

Governor Roy Cooper has just announced another step in our state’s reopening plan – essentially becoming ‘phase 2.75’.

The new step would include allowing large outdoor venues (capacity over 10,000) to host public events with no more than 7% of their maximum capacity.

“We will continue analyzing our data as we determine how to move forward safely in other areas that may be included in the new order on October 2nd,” Cooper said during a press briefing yesterday. “In it, we hope to ease some other restrictions, while keeping in place safety protocols like masks and social distancing.”

The Panthers said they will be allowing roughly 5,300 fans to watch the game in person during their next home game on October 4th in what they are calling ‘ticket pods’, consisting of seats in groups of 2-5 with 2 empty seats between each pod and every other row blocked off.

Massive “Tune In” Art Installation Opens at the Mint Museum Uptown this Friday

Local Charlotte artist Rick Lazes, in collaboration with the Mint Museum Uptown, will unveil his latest installation, titled Tune In, on Friday September 25, 2020, in front of the museum located at 500 S. Tryon St. as part of Tune In’s national tour of museums across the country.

The installation, a 12-foot tall diorama fashioned like a very large television, will sit in the plaza in front of the Mint Museum for the next two weeks and is designed to let people view the art in a responsible and socially distanced manner. Six vintage televisions inside the diorama showcase a multi-media collage that Lazes and local filmmaker Seth Koch created that examines television shows from the 1960’s.

Simultaneous with the re-opening of the Mint Museum, Tune In seeks to focus a spotlight on our most valuable cultural assets; our artists and museums which have been devastatingly impacted by the 2020 Pandemic. Lazes notes that “the underlying theme of the installation is to reflect on the past through iconic TV shows from the 60’s.” The video content includes clips from I Love Lucy, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Sons and Mr. Rogers combined with speeches from influential leaders from that era including John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

The installation is designed to be thought-provoking as well as entertaining and includes video clips from James Brown, The Supremes and John Lennon. Lazes seeks to start a conversation with viewers to reflect on the influence of electronic media on our society. During the 60’s it was primarily through broadcast television, which brought families together. Does the advent of smartphones, social media and the internet cause isolation and distance amongst families and friends?

The program begins at 6:00pm Friday, Sept. 25 and will include a jazz quintet from Jazz Arts Charlotte and a pay-bar on the second level of the museum. The installation will remain on view until Oct. 4 with a special performance on Saturday Sept. 26 at noon. Organizers encourage participants to socially distance during the event and bring a mask for when distancing is not possible.

NC Launches New System To Track and Notify Residents of COVID-19 Exposure Via App

North Carolina has just launched a comprehensive COVID-19 tracing and notification app.

According to a press release by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the new app is called ‘SlowCOVIDNC’, and it uses your phone’s tracking and notification systems to alert you if have been in close contact with a positive COVID-19 carrier.

“The SlowCOVIDNC app builds on our ongoing efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 across the state. By proactively notifying app users of potential exposure to the virus, people can act quickly to protect themselves, their loved ones and their communities,” said Sam Gibbs, NCDHHS Deputy Secretary of Technology and Operations.

To use the app:

  1. Download the free SlowCOVIDNC Exposure Notification app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and enable Bluetooth and Exposure Notifications. Bluetooth must be on for the app to work.
  2. After opting-in to receive notifications, the app will generate an anonymous token for the device. A token is a string of random letters which changes every 10-20 minutes and is never linked to identity or location. This protects app user privacy and security.
  3. Through Bluetooth, phones with the SlowCOVIDNC app work in the background (minimizing battery) to exchange these anonymous tokens every few minutes. Phones record how long they are near each other and the Bluetooth signal strength of their exchanges in order to estimate distance.
  4. If an app user tests positive for COVID-19, the individual may obtain a unique PIN to submit in the app. This voluntary and anonymous reporting notifies others who have downloaded the app that they may have been in close contact with someone in the last 14 days who has tested positive.
  5. PINs will be provided to app users who receive a positive COVID-19 test result by contacting the Community Care of North Carolina (CCNC) call center, through a web-based portal, or by contacting their Local Health Department (LHD).
  6. SlowCOVIDNC periodically downloads tokens from the server from the devices of users who have anonymously reported a positive test. Phones then use records of the signal strength and duration of exposures with those tokens to calculate risk and determine if an app user has met a threshold to receive an Exposure Notification

Panthers’ Star Christian McCaffrey Will Miss Games Due To The First Injury Of His Career

Carolina Panthers star running back, receiver, and one-man-offense Christian McCaffrey is about to miss the first game of his career, according to an official press release from the team.

Yesterday, head coach Matt Rhule announced that McCaffrey will likely be out multiple games due to a high ankle sprain, an injury he suffered during his second touchdown of this past weekend’s game against the bucks.

“I hate it for him. No one wants to be out there and play more than Christian does, but everything happens for a reason,” Rhule said. “I’m sure he’ll rehab. I’m sure he’s rehabbing right now. I talked to him earlier today and he’ll get back as soon as he can.”

Yesterday McCaffrey spoke to the media about the first major injury of his career:

This past Sunday was McCaffrey’s 50th game of his career. Mike Davis will likely replace McCaffrey until he is able to return.
