NCDMV Just Announced It Will Stop Issuing License Plates Featuring The Confederate Flag

The North Carolina DMV has officially announced that they will no longer offer specialty license plates featuring the Confederate Battle Flag.

The decision came after an increasing number of complaints came in to the department regarding the pain and anger the symbol was inflicting on many NC residents.

The decision was made quietly before the start of the new year, and they have just now released a public statement about it:

“Effective January 1, 2021, the Division of Motor Vehicles will no longer issue or renew specialty license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag or any variation of that flag. The Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has determined that license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag have the potential to offend those who view them. We have therefore concluded that display of the Confederate battle flag is inappropriate for display on specialty license plates, which remain property of the state.”

The confederate flag design was originally created at the request of the “Sons of Confederate Veterans” (SCV). According to the NCDMV, there are currently 2,527 active NC Licence Plates that feature the confederate flag emblem.

Today the North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans commander R. Kevin Stone released a public statement about the DMV’s decision, saying:

“While our organization is misunderstood by some, we still have rights, and our members, North Carolina citizens, deserve equal treatment under North Carolina law. The NC-DMV has claimed that our civic group’s legally registered logo may be offensive and is inappropriate for display. Make no mistake about this, we are a hereditary civic organization that takes great pride in our ancestry, our deep roots, our ethnic heritage, and our ancestor’s sacrifices to the Southern States including North Carolina. This blatant discrimination by our government is being driven from ignorance of our State’s true history by some and a deep hatred for native Southerners by others…”

North Carolinians Asked About Their Internet Service – Here’s Where We Stand

North Carolina residents can now view results from the ongoing North Carolina Broadband Survey that gauges broadband availability, adoption and quality across the state, thanks to newly-released dashboards.

“We’re excited to launch these dashboards, and we hope that they will help encourage survey participation by highlighting the importance and impact of this data,” said Thomas Parrish, acting N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) Secretary and State Chief Information Officer. “The survey is ongoing, and as we continue to navigate the pandemic and respond to the more critical need for high-speed internet service, it is more important than ever to help get a more accurate picture of broadband in North Carolina.”

The dashboards, created collaboratively by the NCDIT Broadband Infrastructure Office (BIO), the N.C. Center for Geographic Information and Analysis and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at NC State University, are updated daily with new data gathered from the responses of households and businesses across the state.

This resource includes: a map with location-based results, a dashboard for visualizing survey results, information on methodology and field descriptions. Data is organized at the county-level and does not contain specific address points. It can also be viewed in a mapped format showing speeds and service availability at the address level on Broadband Survey Citizen Response Map on the NC OneMap – Broadband dashboard.

The five-minute survey, also created in collaboration with the Friday Institute at NC State University, can be taken online for users with internet access and by phone for users without service, and it is available in both English and Spanish.

“We are urging each household in North Carolina—in areas with and without adequate service—to take the survey,” Jeff Sural, BIO Director, said. “Broadband availability is a major issue, and this data will help us provide much-needed context to the stories we hear every day from residents struggling to work, learn and interact online. With better context, we can advocate more effectively for our unserved and underserved communities in desperate need for expanded availability and more affordable access to high-speed internet service.”

Information gathered using the survey will be used to create a more comprehensive view of broadband access, guiding funding opportunities through North Carolina’s Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (GREAT) grant program, informing research and policy recommendations, and supporting strategic targeting of additional funding channels.

This project is an extension of NCDIT’s Speed Reporting Tool, which allowed people to report whether they have internet access at their home or business and determine the speeds received at their address. The survey includes a speed test at the end to gauge respondents’ speeds.

To access the online survey, visit: ncbroadband.gov/survey. Residents without internet service, but with phones capable of text messaging, can text “internet” to 919-750-0553. Standard text messaging rates will apply.

Residents with land lines or cellphones that do not have texting capability, may call 919-750-0553. The interactive voice response system will guide them through a series of short questions to obtain their address and register it in the database as having no internet capability.

Marketing materials from the state’s Broadband Infrastructure Office are available online for communities to launch their own campaigns to encourage residents to complete the survey.

BBB Charlotte Warning Residents Not To Wear Mystery Masks Sent From China

The Charlotte Better Business Bureau is now warning Charlotte residents to be wary of mystery packages that are being left on doorsteps around our city.

BBB President Tom Bartholomy told Fox Charlotte that several packages have been turned into the agency from Charlotte residents who said they did not order them and they didn’t know who sent them.

Inside each of the packages was 1 single face mask.

Bartholomy said residents who receive the mask should not wear them and should either throw them away or turn them in to the BBB.

He said the packages are likely part of a “brushing scam”, whereby companies find names and addresses, send them an inexpensive product, then leave a positive review of the product on Amazon or Alibaba on behalf of that person.

Persimmon Hill Hops Farm York CountyWith the city of Charlotte now ranked among the top 10 beer cities in America, it’s no surprise that local breweries are looking for locally sourced ingredients. 

One farmer in York County now plans on meeting that demand with the help of over hop 1,200 plants planted at ‘Persimmon Hill Hops Farm’.

Larry Feller was initially inspired by the massive hop farms around Seattle and Portland, where he used to work as a chemical manufacturer for agrochemical company Syngenta. After moving to York County, he spent the past couple years converting some raw pasture land into a thriving city of hop plants. His first year yielded him about 90 pounds, and this year he’s expecting significantly larger yields as many of his vines continue to grow toward maturity.

Hops are one of the main basic ingredients in beer, along with yeast, grain and water (many brewers in Charlotte add additional flavors such as coffee, vanilla, fruit, and even hot peppers). Charlotte’s numerous craft breweries also demand a higher amount of hops since they tend to lean toward darker beers and pale ales (which both have more bitter ‘hoppy’ tastes).

The farm now sells Cascade hops and Nugget hops to both consumers (for home brewing) and to local breweries throughout the Charlotte region.

A Journey Into Firearms – A Charlotte Woman’s Perspective

Everyone has a story, a fear to overcome and a mountain to climb. Mine just so happens involves firearms. I never imagined that I would hold a gun, much less fire one. I grew up in New York and didn’t live in the best of neighborhoods. I would frequently hear gunshots in the night, followed by police sirens. Some nights, it would be my home alarm going off. For me, firearms were associated with negative experiences and memories.

I moved to South Carolina when I was 15.  Things were different to say the least. Kids in SC grow up around guns for hunting and self-defense. I was offered numerous opportunities to go hunting and to learn to shoot. I declined.

Shots Fired

I shot my first gun in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.   I fired five rounds that day. I was 22 years old. Even all those years later, I was uncomfortable holding an object that once scared me so much as a child.  I could not bear to fire more than five rounds.

A couple of months later, my boyfriend took me shooting and taught me as much as he knew. I wanted to learn, I wanted to conquer this fear and start my relationship with guns all over. It wasn’t easy. The second time he took me shooting, I ended up crying the whole way home. His family grew up around guns.  His father, and two brothers were amazing shooters. I was continually getting frustrated with my inability to hit the target. Tips, pointer, and instructions were coming at me from all angles.  It was confusing and my skills were not developing. The noise was overwhelming.

The last gun I shot for the day was a .30-06 rifle. This was my first experience with a rifle scope.  I soon realized I was right handed but left eye dominant.  That posed a whole new challenge.  I pulled the trigger, and the flood gates opened. I placed the rifle gently on the table and stepped back, trying to not seem like a hot mess in front of my boyfriend’s whole family. I told myself “you can’t be a baby around firearms.”

I left that experience feeling like shooting just wasn’t for me.  My mind kept taking me back to my childhood…the noise was unsettling…. I was frustrated….it just wasn’t for me.  I concluded I would never hit the target, never overcome the association of shots, crime, and sirens, never fit in with the shooting “crowd”.

Expanding Comfort Zones

So… How did I end up at Blackstone? Long story short, I wanted to tackle life and expand my comfort zone. I wanted to conquer my fears, and replace my last firearms encounter with something that made me feel more successful. I believe fear often comes from a lack of understanding. What better place to proactively conquer fear and gain understanding than a gun range!

I found out Blackstone was hiring, so I put in an application. A few days later I received a Facebook message from my sorority advisor from college. She told me she was the office manager at Blackstone and asked if I could come in for an interview.

At this time, I was working as a receptionist at a yoga studio and as a dance teacher. I worked some magic with my schedule and got myself to that interview. My journey began.

Knowledge without Condescension

The firearms industry can be very intimidating. There’s a lot to know, a social protocol that is set, safety issues and much more. Often times gun ranges aren’t the most welcoming places for new shooters, females, or just anyone in general who doesn’t look like the traditional gun enthusiast.  I am proud to say Blackstone is different in this regard- very different. Of course, I was intimidated my first few days on the job. I wasn’t sure what to expect from all the guys or how I would be treated by customers. It took me awhile to get comfortable holding a gun in my hand.

One of our core values is “Knowledge without Condescension” and I take it to heart. The team takes it to heart. I was, and honestly still am, a new shooter. My team members brought me up to speed without making me feel small, out of place, or incompetent.

Gunpowder Atmosphere

I’d be kidding if I told you that I didn’t face certain challenges with being a part of the firearms industry. There are scenarios where the extent of my knowledge is still developing and times that my skills fall short still.  I simply don’t hesitate to say “I apologize, but I don’t have the answer to that. But, luckily for you I know someone who does!” and continue helping our guests. I am not the most skilled shooter, either. It can be a harsh industry, this gunpower atmosphere…

I am proud to be a part of it because I know how women feel walking into ranges, being intimidated. I take it as my personal mission to make them feel as comfortable and welcome. We welcome everyone to come and spend time with us.

Let me say it boldly and loudly… shooting isn’t just for the boys.

I have determined that I want to be that friendly face that makes other ladies feel that they can be badass shooters as well… even if it’s their first time shooting a gun.  I want them to know that is where I was just a very short time ago.

In Conclusion

When I think of where I came from, I am proud of where I am now. I never imagined that I would be as knowledgeable about the sport as I now am. Yes, I have a long way to go… but it’s a long way from where I was. I get excited when new female shooters come to the range, unsure of themselves and nervous. Just like me, they want to tackle this challenge.

I give them a selection of guns that I first shot. I give them some simple pointers, which mostly include grip, finger off the trigger until time to shoot, and breathing. I still anticipate my shots, so breathing plays a big role for me. It warms my heart when they come off the range, smiling and thrilled with what they have accomplished. I feel as if I played a big part in creating a significant experience for them.

Another woman who conquered a fear. Another woman who can begin her journey with confidence around a firearm, another woman who could ultimately, defend herself.  My name is Corey B.
