Charlotte is About To Host Its First Annual AfroFuturism Festival

0

Charlotte is stepping into the future with its inaugural AfroFuturism Festival (AFF2021) over 3 days at 3 venues next week (August 12-14).

The festival will be packed with a full array of curated activities designed to fire the imaginations of Charlotteans and inspire people of all ages to create and experience a vibrant new world full of possibilities. The idea for this annual event came about when Henry Rock, Founder and Executive Director of City Startup Labs and Rashaan Peek, Director of BlackTechCLT/BlackTech Interactive, thought about how to craft a special break-out convening that would be unique, festive and allow for the cross-pollination of techies, entrepreneurs, makers, creatives, designers, thinkers, scientists and community folks. They wanted to wrap the concept of a new direction for BlackTech Interactive around the idea of Afrofuturism and plant that flag here in Charlotte.

So, what is Afrofuturism? One of the more potent recent examples was the 2018 movie, Black Panther and the fictional country of Wakanda. In the book, Afrofuturuism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture, by Afrofuturists Ytasha Womack and Ingrid LaFleur explains, Afrofuturism is an intersection of imagination, technology, the future, and liberation… it is a way of imagining possible futures through a Black cultural lens”. Womack will be the Festival’s keynote speaker on Saturday (8/14 – 10AM-2PM), which takes place at the Central Piedmont Community College’s Main Campus.

In addition to Womack, AFF2021 will include an (un)Conference with an ideation session facilitated by Brandon Crooms, where the attendees will imagine solutions to challenges facing African American communities in Charlotte through new uses of technology. Also the (un)Conference will include an African Tech Co.Lab panel with TED Fellow, Juliana Rotich (Kenya), Gameli Adzaho (Ghana), and Babasile Daniel Oladele-Emmanuel (Nigeria), moderated by Sherrell Dorsey founder of the PLUG (coming back to her origins at BlackTechCLT). Activities for young folks will include a LED Maker’s Space created by Charla Fields, a comic book work/playshop with the artist Marcus Kiser. An Afrofuturist Art Exhibit curated by Joanne Rogers, co-owner of 9189 Studio Gallery will be on display, along with a Job Fair with PettyGigs.com, and assorted vendors and food trucks.

Speaking of food trucks, AFF2021 is commandeering the Black Businesses Owners Corp. (BBOC) Black Food Truck Friday on Friday (8/13 – 6PM) in the Historic West End. In addition to some fantastic dishes, the Black Classics Outdoor Cinema is showing a series of fascinating Black Sci-Fi shorts. A DJ and other vendors will round out the event.

AFF2021 kicks-off Thursday (8/12 – 6PM) at Dupp & Swat at Camp North End with Libations & Liberation There, Washington, DC nonprofit exec, technologist and entrepreneur, Sudi West will be joined by former Charlotte City Council Rep, Lawana Mayfield for a fireside chat about how Afrofuturism can mend the world. Also, Tamu Curtis of Liberate Your Palate and The Cocktailary will provide a libations tasting.

The festivities wrap up with the AfroPOP Party at Roy’s Kitchen & Patio (8/14 – 8PM).

Workplace Accidents: What Happens When You Crash on Your Commute?

0

The coming-and-going rule largely makes commuting employees ineligible for workers’ comp. In simple terms, employees injured in an accident while on their way to or from work are liable for their injuries, not the employer. Workers’ comp also doesn’t cover workers who are running personal errands.

Situations When Commuting Employees May Be Covered

Traveling Employees

The coming-and-going rule exempts employees who are always on the road. These employees don’t have a fixed workplace because their job involves a lot of traveling. Medical practitioners, plumbers, and salespersons are examples of traveling employees.

On-Call Employees

On-call employees are eligible for workers’ compensation from the time they were called into work. The cover applies even if these employees get injured at home while on call.

Driving a Company Vehicle

If an employee gets injured while driving a company vehicle, he or she may qualify for workers’ comp. He or she must, however, have been on official duty when the accident happened for the coverage to apply.

Crashes that Happen While an Employee is still at the Workplace

Walkways, grassy areas, parking lots, and driveways are part of the workplace. If a worker is injured while getting in or out of such areas, he or she could be eligible for compensation.

Running a Work-Related Errand

An employee who gets injured running a job-related errand while heading home from work may qualify for compensation. Likewise, an employee who is hurt while running a job-related errand during personal time may be compensated.

Business Travel

A worker who gets hurt during business travel may obtain compensation, even if he or she wasn’t working when the accident happened. Courts are usually open to determining qualification for workers’ comp in work-related travel accidents, even in cases where the injurious event wouldn’t be categorized as work-related. Several potential situations may arise in the event of a work-related travel accident. They include:

  • The employee caused the accident, and the cost is within his or her insurance. In such a scenario, the employee will be legally responsible for the accident and his or her insurance will cover the costs.
  • The employee is at fault, and the cost exceeds his or her insurance. In this scenario, the employee would still be liable, and he or she may be in most cases required to cover all the damages. The employer may, however, cover some of the damages in some cases.
  • Another person caused the accident. In this case, the injured employee can file a claim against the liable person for the damages and seek workplace injury compensation to help him or her cover the lost salary or wages.

The Course of Action After A Work-Related Accident

Taking the right steps after a work-related car accident can increase the chance of an injured worker securing reasonable compensation. These steps include gathering information about the accident, seeking immediate medical attention, following the doctor’s advice, and notifying the employer about the accident.

Seeking workplace injury compensation on time and working closely with an attorney in case of a potential personal injury claim is also a wise idea. The attorney can use various strategies, including negotiating a single-payment settlement and filing a lawsuit, to ensure the injured employee will secure reasonable compensation.

The Most Effective Ways to Learn Casino Games

0

Gambling has been a favourite pastime globally for millennia. Casinos are social hubs to meet new people, have drinks or food and, of course, have fun gambling.

Alternatively, online casinos are a cheaper way of enjoying many of the same benefits as land-based casinos from the comfort of home. Betting sites now offer amazing deals on slots, blackjack, poker and roulette online.

However, for those new to the scene, it can be difficult to know where to start. Some casino games are straightforward enough not to need explanation, others seem complex at first glance.

When faced with such a varied selection of different games, each with its own rules, learning these is crucial to bringing success. This list details the easiest and most accessible ways to learn any casino game, including guidance that may even help experienced players.

Before you start

Prior to learning the specifics of individual games, there are some important ground rules that any player should know.

Whether the spin of a wheel or the role of a dice, luck is the most decisive factor in determining outcome. Always be aware that luck is fickle and a hot streak can quickly turn into consecutive losses.

Whilst winning is common, casino games are developed so that the house always has a slight advantage. It’s crucial to only gamble an expendable amount that won’t affect your overall financial situation.

Gambling can be frustrating. Don’t chase your losses and try to keep a cool, level head at all times.

Especially online, there are great deals to be found when gambling. Utilise these as much as possible to maximise profit.

Playing online means that users can generally play casino games at much reduced stakes compared to their land-based counterparts. This is ideal for newer players.

Video poker is a great way for new players to learn poker hands without having more experienced players take their money.

How to Learn Casino Games

Luckily for anyone new to the casino scene, there is an abundance of resources to help newer players.

Ask Someone Familiar.

Firstly, and most simply, ask an experienced player or friend that is knowledgeable of the rules. As opposed to some of the options on this list, this method allows the benefit of being able to ask specific questions and seek clarification.

They can also offer you tips and tricks they have learned along the way and will know which games will most suit you.

Utilise Free Games

With newer players in mind, some online casino sites offer free versions of the most popular casino games. These offer a chance for players to familiarise themselves with how to play without the risk of losing real money.

Video Tutorials

YouTube is home to an extensive collection of tutorials and those related to casino gambling are no exception. There will be multiple informative videos relating to all casino games, making this one of the most effective ways to learn.

The visual aspect ensures that maximum clarity is maintained throughout and such tutorials typically include a voice over to aid explanation. Furthermore, it is common for professionals to create tutorials which guarantees that advice is given by those with exceptional credentials.

Online Articles

Plain and simple, the internet offers an almost endless supply of online articles that detail how to play casino games. With such a broad selection, each will undoubtedly include its own piece of helpful advice, useful for both beginners and experienced players.

Podcasts

Perhaps an alternative that isn’t as obvious as others on this list, but effective nonetheless.

Podcasts are particularly helpful for those with little free time, as they require less attention. They are great for when driving to work or getting the house in order.

Although some casino related podcasts are available on Spotify, the majority are accessed through the casino sites themselves. Weekly releases ensure that all information and advice remains contemporary, even as the casino landscape may be changing.

Forums

Dedicated online casino forums are another very effective means of learning casino games. These offer an informal environment where everyday players can share various tips and tricks.

There is usually a wide range of topics discussed and as many are casual players, their advice is particularly relevant to newer players.

Furthermore, these forums are usually home to a strong, welcoming community making it a great way to meet new people.

Conclusion

One of the biggest appeals of casinos is the selection of different games that can be played. A range of choice means that there is plenty of fun to be had and the perfect casino game exists for everyone.

The internet offers a range of informative resources that can help any new players quickly familiarise themselves with any casino game. Turning a profit gambling is challenging, but taking advantage of the above tips can have you winning in no time.

How to Know If Forex Trading Is Right for You

0

If you’ve been looking for strategic ways to grow your money by investing it wisely, you have likely come across quite a bit of talk about forex trading. But is the forex market right for you? Is this the best path for you when it comes to investing your money and watching it grow, or would you be better off taking a different route? Keep reading to access some helpful information you can use to assess whether or not forex is right for you.

You Don’t Mind Taking on Risk

Whenever you get into trading, whether you are trading currency pairs in the forex market or stocks in the stock market, there is a level of risk that you will need to take on. If you are not comfortable with that risk, forex is not right for you.

It is important to keep in mind that the forex market can be volatile, so one of the ways to figure out if forex is right for you is by thinking about how much money you want to invest and risk losing. If you don’t have a lot of money that you are willing to risk for the chance to watch it grow, you might be much better off investing in a safer and less risky way.

You Are Willing to Spend Time Learning

Forex trading can be easy to learn, but even if you have a lot of experience in trading and investments, it will take some time to get used to the ins and outs of the forex market. Therefore, if you don’t mind putting in the time to do the homework, forex might be right for you.

This includes learning about how to reduce risk and increase your odds of getting high returns, but it also requires spending time searching for the right forex broker and platform that will work for you.

A popular option is the MetaTrader platform because it is easy to learn how to navigate it, and it provides you with a lot of helpful tools that you can use to make smarter trades. Plus, when you are ready, you can easily download MT4 for your PC to get started.

You Don’t Mind That Forex Trades by Day and Night

The forex market is open 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. This means that things can happen while you are sleeping or while you are busy doing other things during the day. If this bothers you, it might be better to go with a market that opens and closes during specific hours every day to make it easier to keep track of what’s going on.

On the other hand, if you are the type of person who likes the fact that you could be trading in forex in the middle of the night, forex is certainly worth considering.

Carefully Consider Whether Forex Is Right for You!

Forex trading has its pros and cons that are worth considering if you are thinking about diving in and giving it a try. You will certainly want to do your research before getting started so you will know what to expect.

Remember, there is a risk of losing money, so learning the ropes before trading with real money is recommended. And if you find that forex isn’t right for you, don’t worry, as there are other ways to grow your money.

Ford hides the Bronco prototype under Raptor-related camo, what to expect

0

The Ford Bronco was one of the first off-road capable models launched by the company in the 1960s. Intended to compete in the popular off-road market, the Bronco went against popular rivals like the Jeep CJ-5 and Toyota land Cruiser, employing a similar design and drivetrain.

The Bronco sold well, and later in 1978, the second generation was launched with a chassis derived from the F-Series pickup truck. This generation also became a lot bigger, pushing the Bronco into the full-size SUV segment. After decades in production and several generations, Ford discontinued the Bronco in 1996 due to declining sales and it was later replaced by the Ford Expedition in 1997.

After a 25 year absence, Ford finally launched the all-new Bronco in 2021. Development for the new model started earlier in 2016, and it was unveiled at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. Soon after, the Ford Bronco reservations were started in several U.S states, Ontario, and nearby Canadian territories.

This time around, Ford is releasing two distinct models under the Bronco name, a regular off-road-focused mid-size SUV, and the Ford Bronco Sport which is more compact and gets a crossover design. The regular model will compete with the Jeep Wrangler, and can be bought with a 2-door or 4-door configuration. The new Bronco lapped up around 200,000 reservations after its debut, with more than 60% of those going through with the purchase.

The new Bronco is based on the Ford Ranger, using a body-on-frame construction and similar powertrains, giving it excellent off-road capability like the first-generation model. Although the Bronco was set to be revealed in early 2020, it was pushed to July because of the Pandemic. The very first model was auctioned off for more than a million dollars, following which, in June this year, units started to reach showrooms.

In contrast, the new Bronco Sport gets the same retro styling and design with compact dimensions. It also uses a regular unibody construction based on the Ford C2 platform, classifying it as a crossover.

Just recently, a more rugged version of the Bronco prototype was spotted testing with unique camouflaging. Although it looks confusing from a distance, a closer look reveals some intricate details. A similar design was used on Raptor prototypes, suggesting the possible release of a Bronco Raptor.

Closer inspection of the camo reveals several little images including nature and animal decals. Among them is a bucking bronco, which could suggest this is actually a Ford Bronco and not an F-150 Raptor. Ford initially toyed with the ‘Warthog’ nameplate for the high-performance Bronco, but all recent reports point towards the Raptor nameplate. The lightning decal was also seen among the images, possibly suggesting a hybrid or all-electric version to be launched soon, similar to the new F-150 lightning.

The Ford Raptor’s nameplate is usually bestowed upon the high-performance pickup trucks by the company. So far, both the Ford F-150 and Ford Ranger received the Raptor name. Like the Bronco, the Raptor models are designed specifically for off-road use with standard all-wheel-drive, mid-travel suspension, and grippy all-terrain tires. They also get high-performance engines as standard along with several rugged design elements like flared wheel arches, and a unique grille. From the spy shots, we can see the silhouette of the new Bronco with all-terrain tires and higher ground clearance, all signs that point to a high-performance Raptor trim.

So far, several reports have suggested that the Bronco Raptor and Warthog are the same. It is still unclear which nameplate Ford will choose, but long story short, we can expect a high-performance Bronco launch shortly.

Hardware improvements

Like the Ford F-150 Raptor, the prototypes get a more aggressive design with massive fenders and a higher ride height. A sneak peek at the suspension also reveals heavy-duty Fox Racing dampers, given away by their unique orange casings. Most of these upgrades will likely be lifted from the F-150 Raptor. Another recent spy shot also revealed the 37-inch BF Goodrich tires on the prototype, similar again to the F-150 Raptor, designed for off-roading and high-speed dune running.

Like the Raptors on sale today, we can also expect the unique FORD grille at the front along with a higher front bumper for a better approach angle, wider track, upgraded chassis with improved rigidity, and protective skid plates. The Raptor is also expected to get beefier driveline components like the differential and transfer case to handle all the extra performance and abuse.

Engine options

As of now, the standard model is available with two EcoBoost engine options. Base models get a 2.0L unit producing 300hp, while the 2.7L unit on the higher trims bumps it up to 330 hp. However, the upcoming high-performance model is expected to get the new 3.0L EcoBoost V-6 engine lifted from the Ford Explorer ST and Lincoln Navigator. Without any hybrid tech, the engine produces 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid model is also expected which raises the output to 494 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque. The Bronco Raptor is expected to get the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the standard models.

Expected Pricing

As with most of the Raptor models, expect to pay a lot more than the standard models. Because of the several performance improvements and design elements, the Bronco Raptor is expected to start at $65,000, making it more expensive than the range-topping First Edition which retails for $58,410. As of now, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, which is the Bronco Raptor’s closest competitor, retails for $73,500, making the Bronco a bargain in comparison.

Expected launch

Because of the pandemic, the Bronco launch was delayed by several months. We can expect a similar delay with the upcoming Raptor model, and it should arrive for the 2023 model year. The standard models started rolling off the production line just recently in June 2021, and the effects of the pandemic are still in effect, like microchip shortages and other production constraints, causing a delay in production and the eventual delay of the Bronco Raptor. So a realistic launch timeline will be late 2022.

With its launch, the new Bronco Raptor is expected to be the best off-road capable model by the manufacturer, staying true to its roots.

Fall at the Fair? Here’s What to Do

0

After an injury fall at a fair, the fall victim should see a doctor immediately before engaging in any other activity and safely keep the medical records. The victim should document the scene of the fall accident and notify the fair event organizer or premise owner of the accident. He or she should also gather information about any eyewitness at the scene.

The fall victim is entitled to compensation if he or she is injured due to another party’s negligence. He or she can sue the fair event organizer or premise owner. Fall accidents at the fair can result in a variety of injuries, ranging from minor bruises to severe injuries like spinal cord injuries.

Taking the Right Steps After a Fall at the Fair

Seeking Urgent Medical Attention

The victim should see a doctor for a full medical examination immediately after a slip and fall. The victim should describe to the doctor precisely when, where, and how he or she was injured. Establishing a link between the injuries sustained and the fall is important.

Keeping Proper Medical Records

The fall victim should obtain and safely keep medical records. Doing this will make the work easier for the injury attorney.

Informing the Premises Owner or Event Organizer About the Accident

The fall victim should avoid making excuses for his or her fall, or dusting himself or herself, and limping away. Instead, he or she should immediately report the accident to the premise owner and/or event organizer.

Documenting the Accident Scene and Collecting Witness Information

This step involves taking time-stamped pictures of the contributing hazards at the accident scene. It also involves collecting contact details and the physical addresses of witnesses.

Causes of Fall Accidents at Fairs

Slip-and-fall accidents are majorly caused by substances on the floor, such as water, ice, and litter, which reduce frictional properties between shoes and floor surfaces. Since fair events mainly involve huge crowds, obstacles on the walkways can lead to trips and falls. Deviations or elevations on the walking floors can also cause falls, as the clearance distance between feet and the floor surface is so small during normal gait.

Bumping or getting pushed by another person or an object can result in loss of balance and may lead to fatal falls. Fall accidents at fair events may interrupt crowd flow, resulting in multiple trips and falls and severe injuries to fall victims.

Liability Determination

Fair organizers are legally responsible for the safety of legal fair attendees. Slip-and-fall victims that suffer injuries in a fair accident must demonstrate the fair organizer’s negligence. The injured victim must prove that the fair organizer knew or should have known about hazardous conditions and resolved them in advance. The victim must also prove that fair organizers or their employees directly contributed to the hazardous conditions that caused the fall accident.

Getting Legal Support

Liability is usually contested in slip-and-fall claims. A slip-and-fall victim can improve the chances of obtaining a favorable outcome in a personal injury claim with the help of an injury attorney. The attorney can obtain evidence that the victim can’t obtain on his or her own, including compelling businesses to provide surveillance footage or copies of accident reports using subpoenas.

Can a Creditor Seize My Stimulus Check?

0

Third-stimulus-check beneficiaries can have their payments seized by creditors or private debt collectors to cover past-due debts, such as credit cards debt and private student loans. The funds can’t be garnished to service unpaid government debts, such as owed child support, federal student loans, and delinquent taxes. Debt collectors, who seize stimulus payments using unfair collection practices can be charged and ordered to return the garnished payments.

Why Third Stimulus Payments Aren’t Insulated from All Garnishments

Unlike a typical bill, the American Rescue Plan was enforced through a budget reconciliation process. Congressional Democrats applied this legislative strategy to hasten the passage of the COVID-19 relief bill, which contained the third stimulus payments. The third stimulus package isn’t insulated from all garnishments because legislators were unable to include protections similar to the second stimulus payments. For this reason, stimulus funds are exposed to debt collectors. In simple terms, private debt collectors can seize a stimulus payment.

According to a Tax Foundation policy analyst, protections are in place to insulate third stimulus payments from child support and tax debt. There are, however, no protections to insulate those payments from private debts like debts accumulated because of a civil judgment.

Debts Insulated from Garnishment

Child Support Debt

Child support debt falls under the federal debt category. The 2021 rescue package legislation prohibits the seizure of stimulus payments to service unpaid state or federal debts and other federal taxes.

Unpaid Federal Student Loans

Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act temporarily halted debt collection actions against individuals with past-due federal student loans. The moratorium is still in effect up to September 30, 2021, following an extension by President Biden.

Debts That Might Be Seized From Third Stimulus Checks

Credit Card Arrears and Unpaid Private Student Loans

Individuals with credit card arrears and outstanding private student loans can have their third stimulus check garnished but only after creditors or debt collectors obtaining a court order. The creditors are, however, still limited in seizing the stimulus payments until after they put a lien or attachment on a defaulter’s bank account.

Can IRS Tax Stimulus Checks?

IRS classifies stimulus checks as non-taxable income. Consequently, stimulus checks beneficiaries are not obliged to pay income taxes or report the funds when filing federal tax returns. Taxpayers with delinquent taxes are still eligible for a stimulus payment, as they aren’t garnished by IRS.

Eligible taxpayers, including Property Tax/Rental Rebate Program claimants, can claim a recovery rebate credit if they fail to get stimulus checks or get less than the full amount. They must, however, first file tax returns to claim the credit. Claiming the rebate credit can result in increased tax refunds or lower tax debts.

Seizing of Stimulus Checks by Rogue Debt Collectors

Stimulus beneficiaries can sometimes have their checks unfairly seized by debt collectors or creditors who break the law while trying to recover their money. A consumer protection attorney can review the beneficiary’s situation and advise him or her on the available legal options. If the creditors broke the law, the attorney can help in getting the garnished payments back. The creditors can be also be sued and may be ordered to pay for damages alongside the accrued legal fees.

Immigrants: What Happens When Your Sponsor Dies?

0

Before 2009, pending petitions couldn’t be approved if the petitioner died before review, but provision INA 204(l) made it possible to approve petitions even if the sponsor died. However, there are conditions that petitions and applicants must meet to have petitions approved in the event of the sponsor’s death.

Conditions for Approving Petitions if a Sponsor Dies

Officers may be able to approve adjustment applications, petitions, and other applications if the applicant resided in the U.S. when his or her sponsor died and if the applicant continues to live in the U.S. on the date of the decision on the pending application. Additionally, the applicant must be a beneficiary of an approved or pending immediate relative immigrant visa petition, a beneficiary of an approved or pending family-based immigrant visa petition, a derivative beneficiary of an approved or pending work visa petition, or a beneficiary of an approved or pending refugee/asylee relative petition. The applicant may also be a person admitted as a derivative U or T nonimmigrant or a derivative asylee.

Meeting the Requirements of a Qualifying Relative

The deceased sponsor involved in a pending petition or application needs to meet the definition of a qualifying relative before officers can consider noncitizens eligible for immigration benefits through that sponsor. To help gauge whether the sponsor is a qualifying relative when immigrating as a family, Congress provided a list of people who may continue to seek citizenship via the relative.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the qualifying relative is:

  • A petitioner of an immediate relative immigrant visa petition or beneficiary of a family-sponsored immigrant visa petition
  • The primary beneficiary of either a widow(er)’s self-petition or an employment-based immigrant visa petition
  • A petitioner of a refugee/asylee relative petition
  • A VAWA self-petitioner
  • The primary recipient of a T nonimmigrant visa
  • The primary asylee approved for asylum

If the deceased sponsor was part of the applicant’s immediate family, couple, or same-sex couple, he or she will be considered a qualifying relative.

Meeting the Residency Requirement

Applicants must also have lived in the U.S. at the time their sponsor died, and they must continue to reside in the country to adjust immigrant status through the deceased sponsor.

According to INA 204(l), an applicant’s residence is their “principal, actual dwelling place in fact, without regard to intent.” This means that if the applicant’s place of residence is within the U.S., they will meet the residency requirement.

If an applicant traveled abroad at the time of the qualifying relative’s death, the applicant won’t need to prove that he or she still resides in the U.S. He or she also won’t need to prove that his or her presence in the country is lawful. On the other hand, a removal order and its execution will prevent noncitizens from residing in the U.S.

Generally, noncitizens seeking citizenship in the U.S. will be able to successfully apply for a visa even if their sponsor dies. Under certain conditions, they may also be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit if the sponsor died as a result of negligence. As long as sponsors meet qualifying relative requirements and applicants meet residency requirements, they will have the chance to adjust their status.

Understanding the Impact of Workers’ Compensation on Child Support

0

If a worker sustains an injury on the job and receives workers’ compensation, this could affect child support obligations in a number of ways. Specifically, parents may discover that funds recovered from workers’ comp impact the division of assets and child support calculations in divorce proceedings.

How Workers’ Comp Works

Workers’ compensation is money that a worker receives as compensation for injuries sustained on the job. To qualify for workers’ compensation, workers need to have endured injuries connected to their employment. Some instances of workers’ compensation could include when a worker is injured by unsecured equipment when performing duties, or if he or she winds up in an accident while performing a delivery in a company vehicle.

If a worker receives workers’ comp, the payment will typically function as a replacement for a personal injury claim that workers might otherwise file against employers or employers’ insurance companies.

Workers’ Compensation and Shared or Separate Property

Generally, marital property will include all funds from any source that an individual acquires while married. These income sources could include work, pension, retirement accounts, rentals, and appreciation of assets. When filing for divorce, individuals will need to divide marital assets with their spouses, and the total value of assets will help determine which parent will need to pay child support and the amount of support.

Separate property, meanwhile, is the property that a person earns or acquires before marriage or after a divorce, meaning it won’t be subject to division throughout divorce proceedings. Whether workers’ comp falls under separate or marital property will depend on how and when the worker received the awards. In most cases, if a worker sustained a work-related injury and received workers’ compensation awards while married, these funds will be considered shared. However, if workers received the funds before or after their marriage, they will be separate.

Bearing this in mind, it’s important to know that in most states, even if a workers’ comp award is considered separate property, it’s still considered income that factors into child support calculations. Consulting with a family law attorney could help determine whether workers’ comp awards are marital or separate property.

Workers’ Comp’s Impact on Divorce and Child Support

Depending on the nature of workers’ compensation awards and the state where the recipient is getting divorced, workers’ comp could have an effect on divorce proceedings.

For instance, if a recipient lives in a state where workers’ comp is considered a personal injury award, the courts may treat them as marital or separate property. Specifically, the parts of a workers’ comp award that cover medical bills and lost wages while the recipient was married will be considered marital property. Meanwhile, parts of the award that cover expenses before or after marriage will be separate property.

When it comes to child support, most states will take workers’ comp awards into consideration when calculating child support payments. On the other hand, if a parent is making less income after receiving workers’ comp awards, the parent may be able to request a reduction in child support payments. Speaking with a divorce attorney can help gauge how workers’ comp earnings will impact child support.

North Carolina Ranked As Having The 2nd Most Equitable School Districts in America

0

While the US is among the most educated countries in the world, it doesn’t always provide the same quality of schooling to all students. Often more affluent school districts receive a significantly greater amount of funding per student than poorer districts.

These discrepancies have been significantly exacerbated over the past year due to Covid. Low-income students have suffered the greatest “learning loss” due to partial or total remote learning, given they are less likely to have the technological resources they need.

Today the financial website WalletHub released a report ranking the States with the Most & Least Equitable School Districts. To rank each state, they scored the equitability of each school district in each state based on two metrics: average household income and expenditures for public elementary and secondary schools per pupil.

North Carolina was found to be the 2nd most equitable state in America.

The site also ranked each school district in our state as follows:

Most & Least Equitable School Districts in North Carolina
