Over 33,000 Carolinians Without Power This Morning After Weekend’s Ice Storm

Over 30,000 Duke Energy customers in the Carolinas woke up without power early Monday after this weekend’s sprawling winter storm. Duke’s outage map showed the hardest-hit areas were in the mountains and foothills of North Carolina and South Carolina.

By 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, Duke Energy outages stood at about 33,000. Charlotte largely avoided mass outages, with only a few thousand customers affected, mainly in areas southwest of Uptown.

Ice remained the main concern because it can drop limbs onto lines and damage equipment. Meanwhile, wintry precipitation ended overnight, but lingering cold could slow melting and keep slick spots around.

Duke Energy also points customers to outage maps for other utilities across the Carolinas through its outage resources page.

Grand Jury Indicts Charlotte Man After University City Chase During ‘Operation Charlotte’s Web’

0

A Charlotte resident and legal US citizen is now facing up to 8 years in federal prison after fleeing from ICE officials and border patrol agents during ‘Operation Charlotte’s Web‘ in November.

According to the Department of Justice, 24-year-old Miguel Angel Garcia Martinez is being accused of leading federal immigration agents on a chase in University City, driving aggressively, and crashing into a vehicle carrying four officers. A federal grand jury returned the indictment Thursday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Western North Carolina.

Prosecutors say immigration officers tried to contact Garcia Martinez on Nov. 16 after spotting his Dodge Sprinter van near enforcement activity. Authorities say Garcia Martinez fled as agents approached. After traveling down University City Boulevard and swerved through traffic, prosecutors say the van struck a vehicle occupied by four federal officers. He was then arrested and taken into custody by federal agents.

Dash-camera footage from the pursuit captured federal agents saying, “I don’t wanna damage up my F***ing car dude,” and “He’s gonna get shot, that’s what’s gonna happen,” during the pursuit.

The indictment charges Garcia Martinez with assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, and interfering with federal officers performing official duties. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison, prosecutors said.

Garcia Martinez’s attorney, John Park Davis, told WFAE that agents “assaulted” his client for recording them in public. He also called the agents’ conduct “unconstitutional aggression” that put lives at risk.

Federal officials said ICE, Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI assisted the case. Garcia Martinez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

CMS Preemptively Cancels Classes Amid Historic Ice Storm

0

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will close all schools and offices on Monday, Jan. 26, as wintry weather moves across the region. The closure also cancels all school activities and programs, including Before-School Enrichment Programs and After-School Enrichment Programs.

CMS said it will not use a designated make-up instructional day from the 2025–26 calendar because Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill has waived the requirement for that instructional day. The district said it made the decision after monitoring conditions and coordinating with local and state officials.

CMS added that it will keep tracking National Weather Service updates and will notify families if any additional schedule changes become necessary.

What to Know Before Planning a Long-Distance Island Move

0

Planning a long-distance move is challenging, and relocating to an island adds extra layers of complexity. From transportation logistics to limited access routes, every step requires careful preparation. Understanding the unique challenges of an island move ahead of time can make the entire process smoother and far less stressful.

Research the Destination Thoroughly

If you want to move to Hawaii or any other island, it’s important to know that islands have different characteristics; their cultures, weather, and venues are not uniform. Research into the local environment, customs, and services tells a realistic story about life on a day-to-day basis. Future residents prepare for the change by learning about healthcare, education, and transportation options. Forums or social media groups where residents gather can also provide a valuable perspective.

Understand Transportation and Shipping Logistics

Getting to an island is usually not as easy as a drive-up. Transporting people and possessions also brings in ferries, flights, or cargo ships. On some islands, routes are limited or infrequent, and that can impact timing and cost. To avoid unnecessary stress, do not forget to plan some extra time for possible weather delays or customs checks.

Save More for Rent and Moving Costs

Sustaining life on an island will sometimes mean more expensive groceries, utilities, and services. Including your living expenses (rent, food, etc) in your detailed budget prevents surprises, like shipping all your stuff, paying for temporary housing, or unforeseen costs. Wise financial decisions are made when one can compare prices for different services while moving.

Check Legal and Administrative Requirements

Now, relocating to an island — particularly if it has other government regulations — could require some documentation. That could entail visas, residency permits, or customs paperwork if you’re transporting personal goods. Confirm a pet policy, rules on vehicles in your area, and restricted items to avoid hiccups before moving day. It is always best to refer to official government resources to remain compliant with local laws.

Healthcare and Emergency Services (HSC ) Planning

Island health care services could be a lot different than those you are used to in a major city. Knowing who your available healthcare providers are and how long it takes for them to get you emergency help gives peace of mind. Another critical step is to have health insurance

Climate and Weather – Be Prepared

Depending on the island you’re moving to, you may experience unique weather conditions such as hurricanes, tropical storms, or heavy rainfall. These factors should guide how you pack and prepare for the move. Being ready for potential power outages or temporary supply shortages helps ensure safety and comfort. Packing appropriate clothing and emergency supplies allows you to adapt more quickly to changing conditions.

Secure Suitable Housing in Advance

Acquiring a home on an island may be tough to obtain where stocks are lower, or demand is high. You have more options and less stress when you start the search early. You might need to find temporary accommodation while you find somewhere you plan to stay long-term. Information about neighborhoods, DR Building availability, and rental costs helps to make informed decisions.

Simplify and Downsize Belongings

It saves time and money to downsize before the move. Dispose of everything that is not necessary by selling, donating, or storing the misfit items. Focusing on the basics will help keep things organized, ensuring the new property stays in shape.

Local Utilities & Services — Get To Know

There are outages, and no service is available in certain areas. By contacting providers early, services can be established before your arrival. This helps you avoid any surprises down the road when you move in because you know about bill cycles and payment methods.

Conclusion

Moving to an island away from home can be quite the thrill and a whole new experience. This process is doable if you plan for it, give yourself the time to research, and provide flexibility. Focusing on transportation, legal issues, and community connections helps set up new residents for success. Proper preparation turns the adventure into a pleasurable and fulfilling chapter.

Police Arrest Charlotte Man With 63 Bricks of Cocaine Immediately After Being Released From Prison

0

A Charlotte man was arrested for trafficking over 63 kilos of cocaine immediately after being released from prison.

Back in 2012, 28-year-old Matthew Gerard Hendy was convicted of conspiring to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute more than 50 kilograms of marijuana, money laundering by concealment, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime – he was sentenced to 138 months of prison.

As soon as he was released from prison, the 42-year-old Hendy set up delivery for 63 “bricks” of pure cocaine. Law enforcement intercepted the load on Dec. 9 when a tractor-trailer arrived at a meeting location. When Hendy saw officers on scene, authorities say he tried to flee. He later admitted he ordered the 63 kilograms, according to the US Justice Department.

Hendy now faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years because of the prior conviction, and a maximum sentence of life in prison. The court has not yet set a sentencing date.

Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced the case alongside the ATF Charlotte Field Division and the Union County Sheriff’s Office. He also credited the U.S. Probation Office for assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alfredo De La Rosa is prosecuting the case.

New Data: 52.9% of Charlotte Renters Searching with “Low Urgency”

0

Amid a backdrop of falling rents, increasing vacancies, and plentiful new inventory, renters have increasingly become less urgent in their search for a new home. But recent data suggests that may be beginning to change.

In a new report by Apartment List, they explored trends in a metric they named “renter urgency.” They found that the share of renters searching with low urgency peaked last September, but then turned a corner to close out the year.

According to the report:

  • 52.9% of renters looking for a new home in the Charlotte metro were searching with low urgency as of December 2025, compared to a national average of 53.8%. That ranks #33 among the nation’s 25 largest metros.
  • The share of low urgency searches in Charlotte was down from 53.2 in December 2024, and has fallen slightly from the 2025 peak.
  • With the multifamily construction boom now past its peak, the recent increase in urgency could be an early indicator that market conditions are starting to shift.

Historic Ice Storm Risk Rising: Why Officials Are Sounding the Alarm in Charlotte

0

A potentially historic winter storm could bring some of the most damaging ice the Charlotte region has ever seen this weekend.

North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein has already declared a State of Emergency and NCDOT crews are already pre-treating roads, bridges, and overpasses with brine. They have also restocked salt and prepared equipment for quick response.

Forecasters expect sustained subfreezing temperatures into next week. Ice remains the biggest concern, with forecasts predicting prolonged freezing rain. The winter storm watch outlines ice totals that could reach damaging levels in parts of the region in excess of 1 inch. Road conditions could deteriorate significantly as early as Saturday afternoon and could remain hazardous for days.

Attorney General Jeff Jackson has activated North Carolina’s price gouging law during the emergency. Residents can report suspected gouging at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or through the state’s online system here.

The setup is reviving memories of the December 2002 ice storm. That storm brought major power outages, significant damage, and more than 200 carbon monoxide-related hospitalizations tied to improper heating. An estimated 24 deaths and over 1.8 million people lost power due to the storm.

If this weekend verifies on the high end, ice could snap trees, drop power lines, and lock roads under a hard glaze. Officials urge residents to prepare now and avoid travel once freezing rain begins.

North Carolina Emergency Management officials remind all residents to:

The outstanding wildcard security for websites

0

It may seem complicated to run a site with numerous sub domains. Every section requires security and confidence. Security should not retard growth and increase expenditure. A good number of site owners seek easy-to-use tools that take care of all that at a given time. This paper will describe the functionality of wildcard security, why it is suitable to scale sites, and how it helps to save time without losing customers and data security. It also will help in the future expansion without creating stress and technical confusion.

Knowledge about Wildcard Security.

Wildcard certificate is used to secure a primary domain and all the subdomains. A single set up secures numerous addresses. It comes in handy with a blog, stores and portals, which share the same name. Owners do not have to work with a lot of files but with one. This eliminates mistakes and wastage. Sites become well organized as they expand.

It also prevents the need to plan future projects and experiments. Teams will frequently develop test folders, preview and temporary pages. All of them still require protection to prevent sanctions. Wildcard coverage eliminates set up delays. One does not have to seek permission every time. This keeps momentum high. It is also compatible with automation tools in the contemporary hosting systems. Sites can be deployed within a short period of time and in a safe manner by scripts. There are uniform security regulations across the board.

This will ease new employees. Training becomes easier. Paper work remains shorter. The general management is more relaxed. The site architecture is not rigid but still gives up no safety or control.

It is applicable in a lot of industries including education and media platforms. Owners gain peace of mind. Users get flawless access. Growth happens naturally. This is because security remains intact without the need of additional measures and expenditure even as services evolve and audiences grow with time.

The Reason Cost is Important to Expanding Sites.

Limited groups are budget conscious. It may soon get costly to purchase numerous certificates. There is one solution that can reduce costs. It is due to this that numerous individuals go out in search of cheap wildcard ssl certificate when security planning. It is comprehensive in nature and does not need extensive expenditure. The outcome is affordability in terms of safety.

Time Saving and Work Reduction.

Time is precious to the developers and owners. Renewal management of every subdomain is a waste of hours. Updates are easier when there is one certificate. The less steps taken the fewer errors. Teams are able to specialize in content and features. A lot of them adopt a low priced wildcard ssl certificate to make work light and yet remain secure.

Long Term Benefits

Wildcard protection favors development. This is possible even without new security measures. This is flexibility which assists testing and expansion. Tourists are observing a safe relationship all over. There is the same degree of trust throughout the site. Early adoption of a cheap wildcard ssl certificate is a preparation that would enable a site to scale well.

Expansion of the web site must be an exhilarating and not a hazardous one. Less effort is required to provide extensive protection by wildcard security. It maintains the security of the users and the ease of the teams. Security is easy and cheap with the correct methodology. Making a plan would facilitate growth of the site without any fear but retaining trust and good performance.
