Charlotte’s First 4-Year Medical School Receives $25 Million Gift To Start Signature Building

Charlotte’s first ever fully-accredited 4-year medical school may start classes soon than expected thanks to a massive surprise Christmas present from the Atrium Health Foundation.

The $25 million gift to Atrium Health will give Levine the naming rights on the new signature “Howard R. Levine Center for Education” building that will become the foundation of the sprawling new Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte campus in Midtown.

According to a press release from Atrium Health, the new center will house the school of medicine, the Wake Forest University School of Business, the Wake Forest School for Professional Studies, and the Carolinas College of Health Sciences.

“We couldn’t be more appreciative for this extraordinarily generous and meaningful gift from Howard Levine,” said Atrium Health president Eugene A. Woods. “The Howard R. Levine Center for Education will literally change the trajectory of young people’s lives for decades to come. Specifically, it will enable us to equip future health clinicians with the curriculum, tools and facilities to create an educational experience that is constantly on the cutting edge of the latest science. As importantly, it will enable us to expand career pathways to underserved populations through targeted pipeline programs in coordination with the other educational institutions in this region.”

The $25 million donation is the first major gift in Atrium Health Foundation’s Giving Hope Campaign, which has set a goal of $500 million in donations towards support of the school of medicine and other key Atrium Health programs and initiatives.

Atrium Health is now expected to break ground on Wake Forest University School of Medicine – Charlotte in early 2022, with their first classes now scheduled to begin in mid-2024.

North Carolina Hires State’s First Ever “Chief Privacy Officer” To Fight Cyberattacks

In an effort to tighten privacy practices and further protect data from cyberattacks and accidental exposure, the NC Department of Information Technology has appointed Cherie Givens as our state’s first ever “Chief Privacy Officer” (CPO).

As the inaugural CPO, Givens will be tasked with managing risk related to information privacy laws and compliance regulations.  The role was created to allow for stronger authority for making privacy decisions and protecting the interests of North Carolina residents, businesses, and visitors.

“Security is critical, and everything we do has to be built on the foundation of cybersecurity and privacy,” said North Carolina State Chief Information Officer Jim Weaver.  “We have a tremendous responsibility to ensure that we are keeping identities and data secure and private.”

Givens will build a strategic and comprehensive statewide privacy program through leadership, development of clear objectives, policy development, and building relationships with stakeholders and business partners.  The privacy program will be tailored to the state of North Carolina that defines, develops, maintains and implements policies and processes that enable consistent and effective information privacy practices.

Givens is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) and an attorney with more than 20 years of experience.  She is joining NCDIT after more than a decade spent supporting federal privacy programs and brings expertise in creating, assessing and maturing privacy programs.  Givens has supported privacy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Government Publishing Office and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Givens has taught graduate level privacy and information science courses at San Jose State University, University of Alberta and the University of Maryland.  She also is the author of Information Privacy Fundamentals for Librarians and Information Professionals as well as several book chapters on the topics of information privacy, cybersecurity and information governance.

Free, Environmentally-Friendly Transportation Rolls into Charlotte

This winter, Queen City residents and visitors will be able to travel for free in between the entertainment-focused Center City; First, Second, Third, and Fourth Wards; and the South End in electric GEST golf carts. GEST Carts – which stands for Green Easy Safe Transportation, is debuting its Charlotte service on Friday, December 17, with the company offering free rides throughout uptown and South End. 

The on-demand, free GEST Carts operate similar to car transportation services like Uber or Lyft. Charlotte riders can “call” a cart through a mobile app – downloadable through the Apple Store and Google Play Store – that tracks driver locations and estimated arrival times. The vehicles are able to drive on main roads, keeping with the flow of traffic – but in a much more sustainable and enjoyable way than traditional transportation.  

The company currently has locations in Chicago, Cincinatti, Detroit, Denver and Las Vegas, but the Charlotte launch is particularly meaningful for GEST Carts co-founder Patrick Dye and Charlotte franchise owner Corey Johnson who are both natives of the Queen City. 

“Bringing GEST Carts to Charlotte is a dream come true because Charlotte will always be home to me,” Dye explained. “Our carts provide an easy, free, and environmentally-friendly way to get around. Our presence in Charlotte made great buisness sense because there’s so much to do in Uptown and the surrounding entertainment areas.” 

Dye  graduated from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and Johnson attended North Carolina State University and University Of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After spending 20 years at Procter & Gamble in a variety of manufacturing, engineering, business planning, and scaled operations roles, Johnson decided to invest in Charlotte by opening the only GEST Carts franchise in the state.

Grizzly Bear Named Ronan Has New Home in North Carolina

The North Carolina Zoo announces the arrival of its newest resident – a 740-pound male grizzly bear named Ronan.

Staff relocated the 9-year-old grizzly from the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona, based on a recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Ronan is settling into his new habitat in the North America continent area of the Zoo.

Since this past summer, the grizzly bear habitat has remained empty. That followed the death of Tommo, a beloved grizzly bear who lived at the Zoo for 26 years.

Ronan and his twin sister Finley were rescued in 2003 and relocated to the Reid Park Zoo when they were just barely one year old. That decision was made after wildlife officials in Yellowstone deemed their mother a “nuisance” bear.

Nuisance bears have lost their fear of humans because they start to associate people as suppliers of food. Because of this, they pose a significant threat to humans (raiding campsites and hiking trails), and many bears, such as the mother, must be put down.

Since arriving at the Reid Park Zoo, Ronan and Finley have shared a habitat. But like their counterparts in the wild, grizzlies need to live separately as they get older because they are solitary animals.

The Zoo works with the AZA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, and the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to offer homes for nuisance and orphaned bears.

“We are so excited to welcome Ronan to the Zoo,” said the Zoo’s Curator of Mammals Jay Stutz. “He is settling in well and already building meaningful relationships with his keepers. We all look forward to the experiences that he will share with our guests and staff.”

Zookeepers at the Reid Park Zoo describe Ronan as a mellow bear. Stephanie Norton, Animal Welfare Specialist, describes him: “Ronan has always been a calm and easygoing bear who quickly became a favorite with all of the keepers who worked with him. He has grown into an adult bear at Reid Park Zoo and will definitely be missed, but everyone here is so excited for his chance to continue to grow and experience new things at his new home.”

Male grizzlies in the wild live about 22 years and weigh 400-700 pounds. They can also reach speeds of 30 mph for short distances.

Once prevalent throughout western North America, there are currently about 55,000 wild grizzly bears in North America, most of which live in Alaska. Approximately 1,500 grizzlies inhabit the lower 48 states of the U.S.

Charlotte-Based SPX Flow Is Being Purchased For $3.8 Billion

Charlotte-based SPX Flow Inc has just announced that they will be bought out for $3.8 billion in cash by private equity firm Lone Star Funds. The deal will essentially take the publicly traded corporation private, paying shareholders $86.50 per share.

According to a press release from the company, the sale was “unanimously approved by the SPX FLOW Board of Directors and is expected to close in H1 2022”. It will now be suspending all payment of its quarterly dividend, effective immediately.

“This acquisition is consistent with Lone Star’s strategy to invest in businesses with substantial runway for growth. We have great respect for SPX FLOW’s talented employees and their commitment to innovation and serving customers. We look forward to working with Marc and the entire team to help advance SPX FLOW’s strategy and capture the opportunities ahead,” said Donald Quintin, President of Lone Star Opportunity Funds.

Lone Star plans on keeping SPX’s headquarters in Ballantyne, where the company currently employs 130 workers.
