The gambling scene has changed irrevocably in the US in recent years, with the ruling from the Supreme Court paving the way for states to legalize sports betting. 

With the ability to make their own legislation, tens of states around the US have opted to legalize sports betting. Surrounded by Virginia and Tennessee, who have both brought in sports betting, the appetite for North Carolina to do the same is high. 

But how will Carolina respond, and what changes will they make? Here’s a closer look. 

Conservative Approach

As a southern state in the US, North Carolina has a history of being somewhat conservative in its approach towards gambling. However, with around 11 million people living in the state and an estimated 2 million already taking part in online betting, there is an appetite for sports betting and the potential for substantial revenue to be raised through taxes. 

As a result, the state has begun to move slowly towards introducing sports betting, much to the surprise of many. 

Senators Jim Perry and Paul Lowe are two of the new bill’s sponsors, which is being pushed through. Despite being in very different parts of the state, rural and urban, respectively, both have the same views on the introduction of betting. 

Perry pointed to the need to raise revenue and said that introducing betting would mean the farmers in the district would be spared additional tax squeezes. Although Lowe’s area has fewer farmers, the need to raise necessary funds is the same, and he is in agreement with sports betting being a far preferable option. Lowe also pointed out that it would be possible to ensure that players would be safe and protected rather than pushing them towards illegal sites by legalizing betting. 

Introduction of Legislation

Although other states in the US have been very quick to introduce new betting laws, Carolina is taking a slow and steady approach. 

It’s already possible to enjoy sports betting at three tribal casinos in the west of Carolina. Two are owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and the third by the Catawba Indian Nation. 

The sports betting in tribal casinos was made possible by laws introduced in Carolina in 2019, and the spokesperson for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Breanna Sneed, said it had been “successful beyond our expectations.”

Therefore, this has paved the way for sports betting in the state to be expanded, and Senate Bill 688 is being sponsored by Perry and Lowe. This legislation would allow online casinos already in the market, like PartyCasino to acquire a licence to operate in the state, providing both online and physical venues for sports betting. 

Electronic, collegiate and professional games would all be legalised under the bill, but horse racing and high school sports would be excluded.

The Commerce Committee has already passed the bill 12-4, moving it past the first hurdle. It will need to move past two more committees and the full house, but the indications are that it will succeed. 

The next stop will be the House Judiciary Committee which could consider the bill any time from May 2022 onwards. If it proceeds quickly, it’s possible that SB 688 could be passed by the autumn, but realistically it’s more likely to become active in 2023.

Levine Museum Sells For $10.75 Million To Make Way For New Luxury Apartment Tower

Uptown’s Levine Museum of the New South has just been sold to New York-based Vela Uptown, which plans on demolishing the historic 1946 building to construct a luxury high-rise apartment high-rise in its place.

The museum put the site up for sale last year, telling it’s members they were planning on finding “new ways to create and deliver content in the digital age”.

The 42,000 square foot building at 200 E. Seventh Street sold to Vela for $10.75 million, roughly $3 million over its last appraised value, according to Mecklenburg County tax records.

The museum will remain open until May 15th, after which, they will transition to a temporary home at the Visual and Performing Arts Center on North Tryon Street.

According to a press release from the museum, they’re selling their building in order to, “capitalize on its value and help fund our ongoing transition from a traditional, facility-focused museum to one that builds community through programming delivered digitally, in-person and in non-traditional spaces — as well as from a new home that better fits our mission.”

The specific details surrounding Vela Uptown’s new luxury apartment development has not yet been released.

Richard Sneed, Principal Chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, said the opening of a sports book in the Tar Heel State affords residents a chance to participate in safe and legal sports betting for the first time.

“We are excited to offer legal sports betting at The Book, and just in time for March Madness,” said Sneed. “We would like to thank our partners at William Hill and Harrah’s Cherokee Casinos, as well as state leaders, for making this opening possible.”

Brooks Robinson, Regional Senior Vice President & General Manager of Harrah’s Cherokee Casinos, echoed Principal Chief Sneed’s remarks regarding the opening of The Book.

“We are grateful for our relationship and partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and are ready for sports fans to join us at The Book at Harrah’s Cherokee Casinos,” said Robinson. “We are proud to house North Carolina’s first sports betting venues and are confident that it will be an amenity our guests will enjoy.”

The Book at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort offers plush reclining chairs for viewing games, highlights, and score tickers on the 90-foot ultra-high definition screen. Guest will have the option to place bets at one of the seven ticket-writer windows or from one of the ten self-service betting kiosks available. For a more private group viewing experience, guests of The Book can reserve one of the Fan Caves or seating in the Upper Deck. Full beverage service is also provided.

As more and more people flock to the online dating scene, companies continue to come up with new ways to match people.

Most sites use common traits, hobbies, and interests, but one company recently decided to it would be better to match people based on what they mutually hate. The new dating app is called ‘Hater‘.

After 6 months of connecting people based on what they hate, the company just released a map of the most hated things in each state based on their user data…with some very interesting results.

The responses range from media outlets (South Dakota hates The New York Times) to Hollywood (Delaware has a pronounced distaste for Casey Affleck), the universal (hey, Vermont, everyone hates waiting in line) to the downright crazy (what wrong with tuna salad, Georgia?).
