The Carolina Panthers suffered one of the worst season openers in NFL history, losing 37-3 to the New Orleans Saints. The team, which made significant offseason improvements under new head coach Dave Canales, had high hopes after a dismal 2-15 record last season. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed quickly.

Quarterback Bryce Young, the first overall pick, struggled from the start. His first pass of the season was intercepted, setting the tone for the game. Young threw another interception to open the second half, missing a wide-open Adam Thielen.

The Saints capitalized on both turnovers, scoring touchdowns and widening their lead to 37-3.

The Panthers’ defense had no answers, allowing the Saints to score on all six of their first-half possessions. The Saints quarterback, Derek Carr, threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns, facing little pressure from Carolina’s defense. The Panthers didn’t cross midfield until the final minute of the second quarter, settling for a field goal just before halftime.

Despite some second-half improvements, including Young’s first career rushing touchdown, the Panthers’ offensive woes continued. Young finished 13-of-30 for 161 yards, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 32.8, his career-low. Backup Andy Dalton took over in the final two minutes.

The defense was equally ineffective, allowing the Saints to rack up 180 rushing yards and scoring on nine of their possessions. Panthers defenders, including rookie linebacker Trevin Wallace, were flagged for penalties that negated rare moments of offensive promise.

Even special teams faltered, with a blocked punt late in the fourth quarter adding further insult to injury. Rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders’ holding penalty nullified a key play, further highlighting the team’s numerous mistakes. The 37-point loss ranks among the fourth-worst defeats in Panthers history, trailing only blowouts in 2000, 2002, and 2019.

This crushing loss leaves the Panthers searching for answers as they prepare for the remainder of the season.

Northlake Mall in Charlotte is expected to be listed for sale soon, as Wells Fargo and Spinoso Real Estate Group work to bring the property to market, according to the Charlotte Business Journal.

The mall’s receiver, Starwood Capital Group, took over the loan in 2012 after the $646.6 million loan was defaulted on. Since then, Northlake Mall has faced challenges retaining tenants, with major stores like Apple, Michael Kors, and American Eagle leaving. The mall, currently 85% occupied, has seen a slight improvement in occupancy from 74% earlier this year.

Additionally, the Northlake mall recently introduced Spirit Halloween, a temporary retailer typically seen in declining retail centers.

The 1.06 million-square-foot property, located at 6801 Northlake Mall Drive, remains under bankruptcy proceedings as the potential sale approaches.

UNC Charlotte has enrolled 31,091 students for the fall 2024 semester, surpassing the University’s previous record enrollment of 30,488 in the fall 2021 semester. Charlotte’s enrollment was boosted by a record number of undergraduate and first-time college students and a high volume of returning students.

Charlotte’s undergraduate student population set numerous highwater marks. The University welcomed 24,868 undergraduate students this fall, a 3.7% increase over last year’s enrollment. Charlotte also saw a record number of first-time college students (4,658, a 3.5% increase). The incoming class entered UNC Charlotte with an average weighted GPA of 3.93. Of those students, 527 entered with sophomore standing and 349 joined the University with enough credits to classify as juniors.

“It’s great to see more and more students and their parents seeing the benefits of the strong academics and student success programs available only at Charlotte,” said Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber. “These record-breaking numbers reflect the outstanding work of our faculty and staff and our commitment to the success of all students, through rising retention and graduation rates.”

Charlotte’s growing student population comes from 98 of 100 North Carolina counties, 49 states and 99 countries. Nearly 42% of the overall student body identifies as Black (5,558), Hispanic (4,312), Asian American, Native American or Pacific Islander (3,073). Additionally, with 15.6% of the undergraduate student population identifying as Hispanic, the University becomes an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (eHSI), as recognized by Excelencia in Higher Education.

Of Charlotte’s 4,574 graduate students, 1,649 are from countries other than the United States. Additionally, 32.8% of fall 2024 degree-seeking undergraduates are first-generation college students.

The University also saw a 9.4% increase in transfer students (2,569 students) from last year, welcoming students from 51 different community colleges. New transfer enrollment this fall was bolstered by an increase of 140 students enrolled in fully online undergraduate programs.

Charlotte also enrolled 6,223 graduate students this semester, including an increase in in-state graduate student enrollment. Since 2014, graduate student enrollment has increased by 23.9%.

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) has introduced the ‘Free to Focus SC‘ initiative, a statewide effort aimed at reducing digital distractions in classrooms. This follows the recent approval of a model cell phone policy by the State Board of Education.

Set for statewide implementation in January 2025, the policy seeks to limit smartphone use in schools, fostering an environment free from constant digital interruptions. Local school districts will begin finalizing the rollout of the policy this fall.

Mecklenburg County is advancing plans for a 114-acre “adventure park” in Huntersville. Eastfield Park, located off Eastfield Road, will focus on nature preservation, featuring wildlife viewing areas and protected spaces.

Set to be the county’s first adventure park, it will include a Beech Valley canopy walk, children’s adventure course, dog park, community hub, and 3.75 miles of trails. With abundant canopy trees, streams, and rolling terrain, the park is designed to offer diverse outdoor experiences.

The county purchased the property in 2000, and the first phase of development was identified in the 2008 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The park’s final design was shaped by community input, prioritizing access, education, and recreation.
