CMPD Launches New CrimeMapper Tool to Watch Crime Happen Across Charlotte

Charlotte residents can now track reported crimes around their homes through a new advanced real-world crime mapping system built directly by CMPD.

The department has just launched CMPD CrimeMapper, replacing the national CrimeMapping.com service after CMPD’s contract ended in September.

The new tool plots reported incidents across Charlotte-Mecklenburg and updates data within roughly 24 hours. Users can zoom into neighborhoods, search specific areas and review incidents from the past six months.

Residents can also sign up for automated email alerts when new incidents are reported near their selected area.

CMPD developed CrimeMapper internally, which the department says should improve data accuracy while reducing costs compared with its former third-party service.

The map allows residents to examine recent reported incidents geographically rather than searching through individual police reports.

CrimeMapper displays up to six months of recent data. Anyone looking for older information can use Charlotte’s Open Data Portal, which contains CMPD incident records dating back to 2017.

The new system gives Charlotte residents a more direct way to monitor reported crime around neighborhoods, businesses and other locations across the city.
