Four Charlotte-area ZIP codes rank among the 1,000 highest-income communities in America, including one deep inside the national top 100.

Charlotte’s 28207 ZIP code, covering Myers Park and Eastover, ranks No. 66 nationwide. Taxpayers there reported an average adjusted gross income of about $651,000 per return.

That puts 28207 first in North Carolina and second across the Carolinas. Only Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, ranked higher regionally at No. 48.

The ranking comes from Hussh, which analyzed IRS Statistics of Income data by ZIP code. It divided total adjusted gross income by the number of tax returns and excluded ZIP codes with fewer than 200 returns.

Charlotte-Area ZIP Codes In The National Top 1,000

Using the federal Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro definition, four local ZIP codes made the national top 1,000. The metro includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan and Union counties, along with York, Lancaster and Chester counties in South Carolina.

  • No. 66 — 28207, Charlotte: $651,000 average income per tax return
  • No. 341 — 28211, Charlotte: $313,000
  • No. 878 — 28226, Charlotte: $200,000
  • No. 923 — 28036, Davidson: $196,000

The results put two Charlotte ZIP codes within the national top 350, with 28207 ranking especially high.

It also means the Charlotte region accounts for four of North Carolina’s nine ZIP codes appearing in the national top 1,000.

South Carolina’s entries are heavily concentrated along the coast. Sullivan’s Island leads both states, while Charleston, Isle of Palms, Hilton Head and Daufuskie Island also appear.

North Carolina’s list is more spread out, but Charlotte has the strongest single showing. 28207 ranks nearly 150 spots ahead of the next North Carolina ZIP, Wrightsville Beach at No. 213.

Why This Ranking Looks Different

The list does not measure median household income. Instead, it measures average adjusted gross income reported per federal tax return.

That can push small communities with extremely wealthy taxpayers higher than larger neighborhoods with consistently high household incomes. Sheldon’s 29941, for example, has only a few hundred residents but ranks No. 242 nationally.

The national top 1,000 ends at about $189,000 in average income per return. Davidson barely clears that threshold at No. 923, while several other affluent Charlotte ZIP codes fall outside the first 1,000.

Still, one local result stands far above the rest.

With an average of roughly $651,000 in income reported per tax return, Myers Park and Eastover’s 28207 ranks among the top 7% of communities on the entire 1,024-ZIP national list.
