Charlotte Observer Moving Out Of 360,000 SqFt Headquarters – Downsizing Into Small Section Of NASCAR Building

observer moving to nascar buildingThe Chiquita headquarters vacated 6 floors of the NASCAR Hall of Fame building toward the end of last year, and now they found a tenant to sub-lease half of the 138,000 sqft space – the Charlotte Observer.

The Observer just announced that they will be moving out of their original 360,000 sqft building, a space they’ve occupied for 44 years, to move into 3 floors of the NASCAR building.

Local developer Lincoln Harris is now under contract to buy the old Observer building, which will soon be one of the largest developable tracts in Uptown Charlotte (9.4 acres – about 2 city blocks). They haven’t released plans yet as to what will be built on the site.

This Concord Chinese Restaurant Was Caught Bringing Roadkill Into The Kitchen

Sunny Chen, the owner of Concord’s ‘China Fun’ restaurant has apologized for what he called a mistake, after being caught dragging a dead dear into the back of his restaurant;

A woman who had previously had food delivered from the restaurant noticed the same care on the side of the road loading up a dead dear that appeared to be roadkill. The Chinese restaurant’s Nissan Versa then transported the deer to the back parking lot of China Fun over the weekend.

china_fun_concordThe woman immediately called the Cabarrus County Health Department began investigating the incident.

The owner, Sunny Chen, told a WSOC reporter that he stopped to pick up the deer on the side of the road because he had never tried it before, and that he didn’t intend on serving it to guests.

According to WSOC, the health department confirmed that the deer had been cut up in the restaurant’s parking lot and brought inside to the sink.

York County Council Just Froze All New Housing Development

fort mill suspending all residential buildingAs growth in Fort Mill and the Lake Wylie area has become increasingly problematic, the York County Counsel just made a drastic decision to attempt to control the region.

They just passed a new ordinance that will prohibit any new residential rezonings in the Fort Mill area, including any new plans for single- or multi-family housing until 2017.

It bans all new housing construction between the Catawba River, North Carolina and Indian Land, excluding land inside the municipal limits of Fort Mill and Tega Cay.

The counsel hopes that by the time the freeze ends, the Rock Hill-Fort Mill Area Transportation Study Committee will complete its collector study on traffic capacity in the area. They’re also hoping that the county will adopt a a new infrastructure ordinance that might block approval of new subdivisions if they create more traffic on roads that can’t sustain it.

After several companies musicians and acts have expressed outrage at North Carolina’s new HB2 law, some have decided to not even come to the state, including legendary rock group U2, and Cirque du Soleil. Others are sticking to their commitments, especially after the governor’s recent executive order, which repealed sections of the new law.

jimmy buffet charlotte concertSome of the year’s most significant events have announced that even though they may not agree with HB2, they are still excited to come to Charlotte. The NBA’s All-Star game presented the most vocal opposition to the new law, but recently confirmed that they will still host the games in Charlotte.

2 of this year’s biggest concerts, Jimmy Buffet on April 23rd, and The Dave Matthews Band on May 27th have also announced that they have no intentions of changing their plans. Jimmy Buffet released a statement specifically addressed to his fans, “North Carolina was there for me as a performer in the early days and I have always felt a loyalty to fans there that goes deep…We will be playing in Raleigh and Charlotte next week.”

Evangelist Franklin Graham recently spoke out against PayPal’s decision to cancel their contract, calling the California tech company hypocritical. Graham, CEO of the locally based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, joins a slew of prominent figures and companies who have expressed strong opinions on the new state law passed last month.

In his post, which includes the hashtags #NCprivacyandsafety and #StoptheBullying, Graham referenced a comment made by U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.) that PayPal does “business in 25 countries where homosexual behavior is illegal.”

Governor McCrory Explains HB2 on NBC’s Meet the Press

Over the past week, NC Governor Pat McCrory signed a new executive order that repeals parts of HB2 and expands equal opportunity protection for LGBT employees of the state.

Yesterday, he appeared on NBC’s Meet The Press to discuss why the bill was passed in the first place, and why he still stands behind some parts of it;

The governor said multiple times that the main reason behind HB2 was to block what he considered to be “government overreach” in the city of Charlotte.

“The city of Charlotte passed a bathroom ordinance mandate on every private sector employer in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the largest, 15th, 16th-largest cities in the United States of America. And I think that’s government overreach. It’s not government’s business to tell the private sector what their bathroom, locker room, or shower practices should be,” McCrory commented.

“This is a national debate that has literally come on in the last three months,” he also commented. “No one talked about it until Houston,” where the city overturned similar legislation to what was passed in Charlotte.

She Flew the Coop follows four women who left something secure or stable to travel abroad and pursue a dream.

The journey starts with Sarah Batista, a single mom and former TV news reporter who left behind a decade-long career in 2013 to follow her “gut” and launch her own video/film production company, Stories to Inspire.

Sarah has always dreamed of becoming a documentary film director and after much hard work and perseverance her dream is becoming a reality!

In the full documentary, Sarah documents her own restlessness, fears and life-changing decision to downsize her life, sell her home and most of her belongings in Charlotte, NC to travel and interview three other women who “Flew the Coop” at one time or another.

It focuses on the question of “what would you sacrifice to pursue your dreams?” and delves deep into the fear and issues that keep women from going for it!

New $10 Million Development Coming To Concord Mills

concord mills developmentInTown Suites has some major plans for the Concord Mills area. They are now building one of their first ‘UpTown Suites’ branded hotel complexes for a cool $10 million.

The new hotel will be located right next to the Great Wolf Lodge and Embassy Suites.

InTown Suites has 189 locations in 22 states and is now adding the UpTown Suites brand to its mix.

“This product will be more upscale than InTown properties and appeal to a broad mix of business travelers, contract workers, families in transition and vacationers, I am pleased to say that our first UpTown location will be built in Concord!” commented Collier Daily, VP of sales and marketing, at the recent groundbreaking ceremony.

The Concord location is the multi-billion dollar company’s first location for their new brand – they hope to have about 30 locations started within the next year.

The decision to build their first ‘Uptown Suites’ between Concord Mills and the Speedway seems like a true no-brainer, since Concord Mills is one of the biggest tourist attractions in NC, and given that the Charlotte Motor Speedway holds over 300 days worth of events with over 1.1 million visitors pouring in on an annual basis.

DSC00056Local Tega Cay resident Angie Heidel is now training to take on one of the world’s deadliest diseases in on of the world’s most famous races.

She will be running in the Boston Marathon this coming week on April 18th for the Melanoma Foundation – a foundation that is currently working to spread awareness and find a cure for the deadliest type of skin cancer.

Angie lost a close friend a couple years ago to melanoma cancer and is now more passionate than ever to help others.

The Melanoma Foundation reports that one person dies every hour from melanoma skin cancer, as it’s not only the most widely spread type of cancer, but also the fastest growing.

The show’s artistic director, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, plans on spending the entire $1 million on physical elements of this show, including; new unmatched costumes, hyper-realistic background elements, and a ‘magical’ growing tree that could become the new centerpiece of the play.

The Charlotte Ballet now hopes to outdo New York City and Chicago for the best Nutcracker performance in America;

Rock Hill Is About To Build A New $60 Million Bridge Across The Catawba River

rock-hill-bridge1The city of Rock Hill is about to start a massive new $60 million bridge project across the Catawba river. It will join Mount Gallant Road with Sutton Road, giving thousands of daily drivers from western York County an alternate route to reach i77.

Although most local officials see the new bridge as a necessity, it is facing considerable opposition from South Carolina State and Fort Mill city leaders. State Rep. Ralph Norman in particular strongly opposes the bridge project, saying that it would spend too much of the body’s transportation funding on one project in too small an area.

While Rock Hill worries about traffic congestion on one of its main roads, Fort Mill leaders fear that a new Catawba bridge would send more traffic problems their way.

Those in support of the new bridge are focusing on the fact that city planners are now estimating that by 2035 that the current Celanese Road bridge would increase to 57,700 a day, and with the new bridge, that number is only estimated to be about 40,000 per day.

Opponents of the bridge argued its cost, at an estimated $60 million, would eat up the remainder of the area’s road budget for the next 20 years. Only $116 million has been allocated and there has already been $62 million committed to other projects, including $15 million for improving the I-77 interchange on Celanese.
