Cam Newton’s Moving Video For His Son’s First Birthday Now Going Viral

Cam Newton released a tribute video for his son Chosen’s first birthday yesterday morning, and in less than 24 hours, it’s already received over 78,000 retweets and 135,000 likes.

In his letter, Newton promises his son that he “will always be there when you need me,” and says he wrote it “to show you how much I love you, and what a real man is supposed to be.”

The video has already received over 700 replies, but our favorite has to be from the City of Charlotte:

Newton urged his son Chosen: “Don’t be like me, son. Be better than me,” adding, “At times, son, I am not proud of the man that I am. Some of my decisions are far from perfect.”

Charlotte Health Officials Are Now Banning Dogs From Local Breweries

There’s now a debate raging between dog owners, breweries, and health officials in North Carolina.

Since the brewery craze started in Charlotte in the early 2000s, people have been bringing their pups with them without a second thought, but this was never actually legal, according to health officials.

This past Friday, Three Spirits Brewery posted some sad news to their patrons:

“Some not-so-great news for our dog owning friends at Three Spirits Brewery…effective immediately, we will not be able to allow dogs in the taproom of our brewery. … We still love your dogs, but from now on, they will have to stay on the patio when you come to visit us at Three Spirits,” their post states.

Although most breweries in Charlotte have regularly welcomed dogs, health officials are now speaking up and reminding everyone that taprooms are bound by the same food service codes as restaurants, meaning no dogs are allowed.

In a recent statement, the Mecklenburg County Health Department confirmed that even though breweries may use food trucks, they still wash, rinse and sanitize glassware, and are therefore bound by the same codes as restaurants.

According to Section 6-501.115 on page 178 of the North Carolina Food Code Manual, dogs “may not be allowed on the premises of a food establishment…” unless:

  • they are police or security officer patrol dogs
  • they are service dogs
  • they are physically restrained in outdoor dining areas

Several Charlotte residents have now started a Change.org petition to request health officials to allow dogs in Charlotte taprooms:

“This unfitting regulation hurts non-food-serving breweries and taprooms. Breweries have filled a void in the lives of individuals across generations, social class, gender, and race serving as a place of gathering, a place of relaxation and recreation, and a place of friendship.

This petition simply asks to lift the regulation barring animals inside the premises of non-food-serving taprooms, and to be enforced at the discretion of taproom management.”

Beautiful Tribute Video Made For Steve Smith’s Last NFL Game

steve smith tribute videoThis past weekend, legendary receiver Steve Smith played the final game of his career.

He originally joined the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Virtually his entire career was spent with the Panthers until signing with the Ravens in March 2014. He’s currently the Panthers’ all-time leader in total touchdowns (67), receptions (836), and receiving yards (12,197).

Sadly, he won’t be playing his final game as a Panther, but the Ravens did put together a rather touching tribute video of his last game:

Smith, a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro, emerged as one of the NFL’s most productive wide receivers of the 21st century, leading the league in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 2005. In 2011, he became the 35th player in NFL history to amass 10,000 receiving yards. In 2016, Smith became the 14th player in NFL history to amass 1,000 career receptions.

He will now be returning to his hometown of Charlotte, NC where his wife and kids currently live.

Northlake Mall Is Hosting Free Fitness Classes All Month

northlake-2Without a doubt, the biggest New Year’s resolution is to loose weight and get in shape, and the Northlake Mall has decided to take advantage of the trend.

They’ll be hosting a month-long series of free fitness classes to help motivate and encourage anyone who wants to get in shape or loose a few pounds.

The classes take place every Saturday at 10 a.m. on the mall’s upper level near entry four, with the following classes offered this month:

▪ Jan. 7: Heather Fried from McCrorey Family YMCA will lead MixxedFit, a dance fitness program that is a mix of dancing and boot camp toning

▪ Jan. 14: The “Get Fit with Kristen” class will focus on building lean muscle and burning fat

▪ Jan. 21: The Country Heat Live class is a high-energy, low-impact, country dance-inspired workout led by Nomad Fitness

▪ Jan. 28: Heather Fried returns for MixxedFit

The mall also hosts a Walkers Program on the first Wednesday of every month – you can sign up for their alerts here.

New Gourmet French Restaurant About To Open Near The Northlake Mall

A new French restaurant concept is coming to the Northlake area in the old Mimi’s Cafe location right next to the Northlake Mall (Mimi’s shut down after a fire last spring).

La Madeleine will feature casual French food with a modern American twist, and will include omelettes, quiche, crêpes, French pastries, as well as sandwiches and dinner entrees.

They will be opening their new Northlake location this coming November, at 10224 Perimeter Pkwy., on the other side of Harris Blvd. from the mall; which is directly across from the mall. It’s currently being gutted and renovated, Hakim added.

In one of the most star-studded weddings of 2016, NASCAR’s most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., married long-time sweetheart Amy Reimann during an epic New Year Eve celebration.

The ceremony was held at the Childress Vineyards in Lexington, NC, a large winery and event center owned by NASCAR team owner Richard Childress.

Earnhardt initially started dating Reimann in 2009 and proposed to her while they were visiting Germany in June 2015.

First Charlotte Homicide of 2017 Has Just Been Reported

CMPD is now investigating a homicide on the East Side of Charlotte. 

At Approximately 12:05 am this morning, a call came in about a shooting on the fourth floor of an apartment complex on Monroe Road. The shooter ran away on foot and the man who was shot was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

CMPD officers spend several hours this morning interviewing residents of the apartment complex in an attempt to find the shooter. They asked residents of the apartment complex and several locals who walked near the scene if they had heard or seen anything out of place last night.

Members of the CMPD Homicide Unit now think that this was not a random murder, but rather the victim knew the suspect and suspect there may have been some premeditated intent. 

Police are asking the public to call Crime Stoppers if they have any information regarding the case, or if they heard or saw anything out of the ordinary last night on Monroe Rd.

After The Baltimore Ravens 27-10 loss to the Bengals yesterday, Steve Smith said his final goodbye to a CBS reporter.

He was clearly choked up by admitting that this was going to be his last game.

“This morning my wife sent me a text, and they weren’t here. My family wasn’t here because if they were here, I would have lost it,” the legendary receiver commented.

“I enjoyed it, but you know it’s over, it’s done,” he said. “I know it’s my time. Some people say, ‘Can I play another year?’ I probably could, but what I lose, I’m not willing to risk.”

When asked how he felt, Smith said, “A little bit of relief. You know playing this game and expectations that are expected from you. The pressure that I’ll have now is getting the kids to school on time, do I eat a pint of ice cream or a gallon of ice cream? You know, do I want to workout on the treadmill or stairmaster?”

Police Arrest Concord Man For Possession of Weapon of Mass Destruction

paul-edward-dukes-concord-arrestEdward Dukes, Jr., 27, has just been arrested in Concord for possessing a “weapon of mass destruction” and unlawful possession of an assault rifle. Police were following up on a report of some guns found by juveniles that led police to his door.

According to the CPD report, soon after police arrived at 3170 Patrick Henry Drive they discovered the weapons and interviewed the family, who all stated Dukes had found the weapons and put them in his closet.

Police found an AR-15 and a silver Remington 870 Express with a barrel that was sawed-off to be about 12 inches in length and had its wooden stock sawn into the shape of a pistol grip.

sawed-off-remingtonAccording to North Carolina G.S. 14-288 The term “weapon of mass death and destruction” includes: any shotgun with a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches.

After Duke was arrested, he confessed to buying the rifle from the 9-year-old in his neighborhood for $20, and that he found the saw-off shotgun in Greensboro a few weeks ago. He told police that he was planning on turning the weapons in is on probation and isn’t allowed to possess firearms.

The officer placed both weapons, along with a box of 12 gauge shells, into police evidence.

Dukes is now being held at the Cabarrus County Jail with a $10,000 bond.
